    Review & Install Video

Hey guys, Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, here with my quick review of the MMD bolt on hood strut kit, available in your choice of either black or chrome, fitting your 2015 and newer Mustang. So the bolt on kit from MMD should appeal to just about every S550 owner out there for the simple reason of cleaning up the engine bay by removing that factory hood prop. Now it's a simple product that serves a purpose and does so on the cheap, guys, as the black option's coming in under $100. The chrome option's going to be slightly more, but both options are currently the most affordable hood strut option on the site here at AM. So why would you want to ditch that factory prop rod in the first place? Well, like I just talked about, guys, it does make for a much more clean appearance under the hood. So if you're big into the show scene, this would make a great addition to your ride. But even if you're not, even if you're just a casual enthusiast, occasional drag racer, or if you just like wrenching in the first place, the hood strut kit from MMD will make life a lot easier. As far as the construction goes, well, again, as you can see, there's really not a whole lot to talk about here, guys, a couple of stamped steel brackets and the hood struts themselves, making for a pretty simple package overall. Color-wise, here's what you're going to be looking at. Again, the matte black powder coat, going to offer more of that OE look, it's going to cost you a little less when compared to the chrome or nickel-plated option, going to offer a little bit more flash, cost you a little bit more in the process. Now it is worth pointing out here, guys, that you can use the MMD kit with both your factory and after-market hoods, but just use caution when using them on lighter hoods, as these hood struts are pretty powerful and it might come up on you a little quicker than before. As the name suggests, this is a bolt on hood strut kit, meaning there's no drilling or permanent modification needed whatsoever. So, as a result, an easy one out of three wrenches on my difficulty meter. A socket set and about an hour's worth of your time is really all you're going to need here. I will say it wouldn't be a bad idea to have an extra set of hands on hand before getting started as you do have to unbolt one side of the hood at a time to get this thing installed, but nevertheless, it still can be done on your own if need be. All right, so I think we all can agree that Ford really did drop the ball by not installing these things on the newer Mustangs in the factory. With that said, the MMD option here will be an affordable solution to your prop rod problem, and you can grab your set here at AmericanMuscle.com.

A Prop Rod, Really? It is really hard to believe that Ford is still equipping their all new S550 Mustangs with an old style prop rod. But now you can add the modern convenience and clean good looks of hood struts to your late model Pony with a set of Modern Muscle Design Hood Struts available from AmericanMuscle.

Style And Strength. Designed to get rid of that ugly prop rod, this set of two powerful yet sleek MMD gas struts not only makes opening your Pony's hood much easier, but they also hold it securely in place. Made from lightweight steel and aluminum, they feature a durable black powder coated finish to give your engine bay a much cleaner appearance.

No Drilling Required. The stamped steel brackets included in this MMD kit are designed to bolt into the existing mounting holes in the hood so there is no drilling required for installation. Struts can be installed on factory hoods as well as aftermarket hoods that use the factory bolt location. If your aftermarket hood is lighter than the factory hood, use caution when opening the hood due to the power of the strut.

Application. This Modern Muscle Design Hood Strut Kit is specifically designed for use on the 2015 to 2018 Ford Mustangs, including the V6, EcoBoost, and GT models. Does not fit Shelby GT350's.

Technical Note. The MMD Bolt on Hood Strut Kit does not fit European Spec Mustangs.

I currently have an MMD hood scoop on my factory GT hood, it makes the good quite a bit heavier than stock. Are the hood struts strong enough to hold the hood open with the added weight of the hood scoop?

    ShaneN

    • The MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit is capable of supporting the weight of the stock hood and the MMD Hood scoop.

G'day, I read on the MMD chrome unit, that it doesn't fit RH drive. Do you know why it wouldn't work on a RH drive vehicle?

    RexE

    • The design of the RHD models sold in Europe and the rest of the world has slightly different mounting points for everything under the hood due to the steering components being on the opposite side. Unfortunately, due to this, the MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit would not be good fits for those cars.

    • These hood struts would not be a guaranteed fit on a 1951 Chevrolet skyline.

Has anyone had an issue where the driver side bottom bracket just doesn't line up correctly and wont the bolt go in far enough to catch the threads? I can get mine maybe one thread on and then it backs off and comes loose. If you did what did you do to fix this? Also did this pop anyone else's hood up a couple MM? not a huge deal but it bothers me but I know i'm the only one who can see it but my hood is deffly not flush with the fenders anymore.

Hello, I have a 2017 Right Hand Drive GT and I am looking for a Bolt on Hood Strut Kit for it preferably in Black. I saw that the MMD kit will not fit a RHD Mustang, Do you carry a kit that will fit my car? Thank You, Mike J

    Millepilot907

    • We do apologize however we would not have any hood struts that would work on the RHD drive Mustangs at this time.

      MMD Hood Struts

Awesome product, I did this mod by myself with no problems. Works so much better than the factory hood rod which is in the way and very annoying. Hood springs open and stays open even in gusty wind conditions. Bolts right in place. Awesome mod!!!

      Great product.

The hood struts were a much welcomed addition under the hood. No more prop rod getting in the way while working on my engine bay. Well worth the effort and not hard to install.

      MMD Hood Strut Kit

I purchased this kit because it was the lowest- priced kit on the market. After trying to install in the dark (seems like I always start things at night), I got both sides installed in about 45 minutes. Most of the time hang-ups come from the small retaining clips that come on the struts. I dropped one in my fender several times. However, I was satisfied with the product and the install overall, but once the hood was shut, it was in desperate need for a realignment. The hood slid towards the windshield 1/4” and rose higher than both fenders which is noticeable.

      Poor fitment and functionality

After installing this kit and seeing what poor quality it is, I wish I would have just stuck with the hood rod.. and I absolutely hate the hood rod. Save your money people, buy a nicer kit or just live with the rod. You will be extremely dissatisfied.

Review from MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit - Chrome (15-18 GT, EcoBoost, V6)

      Happy Mustang

I am very happy with my bolt on hood strut. It was very easy to install and it makes it so easy when you open the hood and and not have to put the bar up to hold the hood, and it looks great all chrome. I don't understand why Ford does not have that in their Mustangs. I highly recommend that Kit to all Mustang owners. Thank you very much American Muscle.

Great option to the hood prop.

this is a great option to using a hood prop and easy install. the only caution i have is being careful with the tiny pins used to allow struts to pop on and off mounts, they're tiny and your working above the fender and they are quit a pain to get out of the fender if you just happen to drop one (or both) in the fender.

      Great product!

These Hood Struts are a great addition to any Stang. The factory Hood prop gets so hot after you run the engine that it’s untouchable. This solves that problem as well as adding a little extra!!!

Just stick to your factory rod

The product isn’t bad but getting the hood to align properly is a pain in the butt and takes forever. If you like perfection just keep your factory rod or the misalignment will drive you crazy.

MMD BOLT ON HOOD STRUT KIT

      Excellent for the price

I am sure there are products that are a little better on the market, however for the price O would buy these over and over again. The only reason I say 4 stars instead of 5 is because the other products seem a little better quality, but there price makes them not worth it. All that being said the quality of these seems to be great. Installation was as easy as it gets you just have to be careful with the retaining clips so you don’t lose them. Great product.
