    Review & Install Video

Hey guys, Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, here with my quick review of the MMD bolt on hood strut kit, available in your choice of either black or chrome, fitting your 2015 and newer Mustang. So the bolt on kit from MMD should appeal to just about every S550 owner out there for the simple reason of cleaning up the engine bay by removing that factory hood prop. Now it's a simple product that serves a purpose and does so on the cheap, guys, as the black option's coming in under $100. The chrome option's going to be slightly more, but both options are currently the most affordable hood strut option on the site here at AM. So why would you want to ditch that factory prop rod in the first place? Well, like I just talked about, guys, it does make for a much more clean appearance under the hood. So if you're big into the show scene, this would make a great addition to your ride. But even if you're not, even if you're just a casual enthusiast, occasional drag racer, or if you just like wrenching in the first place, the hood strut kit from MMD will make life a lot easier. As far as the construction goes, well, again, as you can see, there's really not a whole lot to talk about here, guys, a couple of stamped steel brackets and the hood struts themselves, making for a pretty simple package overall. Color-wise, here's what you're going to be looking at. Again, the matte black powder coat, going to offer more of that OE look, it's going to cost you a little less when compared to the chrome or nickel-plated option, going to offer a little bit more flash, cost you a little bit more in the process. Now it is worth pointing out here, guys, that you can use the MMD kit with both your factory and after-market hoods, but just use caution when using them on lighter hoods, as these hood struts are pretty powerful and it might come up on you a little quicker than before. As the name suggests, this is a bolt on hood strut kit, meaning there's no drilling or permanent modification needed whatsoever. So, as a result, an easy one out of three wrenches on my difficulty meter. A socket set and about an hour's worth of your time is really all you're going to need here. I will say it wouldn't be a bad idea to have an extra set of hands on hand before getting started as you do have to unbolt one side of the hood at a time to get this thing installed, but nevertheless, it still can be done on your own if need be. All right, so I think we all can agree that Ford really did drop the ball by not installing these things on the newer Mustangs in the factory. With that said, the MMD option here will be an affordable solution to your prop rod problem, and you can grab your set here at AmericanMuscle.com.

A Prop Rod, Really? It is really hard to believe that Ford is still equipping their all new S550 Mustangs with an old style prop rod. But now you can add the modern convenience and clean good looks of hood struts to your late model Pony with a set of Modern Muscle Design Hood Struts available from AmericanMuscle.

Style And Strength. Designed to get rid of that ugly prop rod, this set of two powerful yet sleek MMD gas struts not only makes opening your Pony's hood much easier, but they also hold it securely in place. Made from lightweight steel and aluminum, they feature a durable black powder coated finish to give your engine bay a much cleaner appearance.

No Drilling Required. The stamped steel brackets included in this MMD kit are designed to bolt into the existing mounting holes in the hood so there is no drilling required for installation. Struts can be installed on factory hoods as well as aftermarket hoods that use the factory bolt location. If your aftermarket hood is lighter than the factory hood, use caution when opening the hood due to the power of the strut.

Application. This Modern Muscle Design Hood Strut Kit is specifically designed for use on the 2015 to 2017 Ford Mustangs, including the V6, EcoBoost, and GT models. Does

    not fit Shelby GT350's.

Technical Note. The MMD Bolt on Hood Strut Kit does

    not fit European Spec Mustangs.

I currently have an MMD hood scoop on my factory GT hood, it makes the good quite a bit heavier than stock. Are the hood struts strong enough to hold the hood open with the added weight of the hood scoop?

        • The MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit is capable of supporting the weight of the stock hood and the MMD Hood scoop.

I have a Cervini Stalker hood on my 2015 Mustang, will these fit my hood ?

        • These hood struts were tested to fit only the original position of the factory hood and support the weight of the factory hood. Installing these hood struts on a different aftermarket hood such as the Cervini Stalker hood has not yet been confirmed at this point in time.

G'day, I read on the MMD chrome unit, that it doesn't fit RH drive. Do you know why it wouldn't work on a RH drive vehicle?

        • The design of the RHD models sold in Europe and the rest of the world has slightly different mounting points for everything under the hood due to the steering components being on the opposite side. Unfortunately, due to this, the MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit would not be good fits for those cars.

I installed without any issues. Aligned and worked perfectly at first. After maybe six or less hood lifts, they will not hold up the hood. I cannot trust them now. My question is, did I cause this problem by adding a very small amount of white lithium grease to the ball joints and sliding metal shafts that go into the hydraulic section? I can not think of why this would have a deliterious effect on the function, but I'll accept the consequences if I screwed things up. Thx. 1 answer

Great quality and a great price

Make sure to mark your hood at the top, bottom and sides before loosing any bolts. It will make alignment so much easier after you add the struts.

Easy install with two people, works perfectly, just make sure to keep a hand on the hood and not let it bounce once lifted, the shocks are strong.

            Cheap

They were on sale, I bought them for my s550, and it didn’t actually fit properly. I had to modify the bracket buy cutting it.. it’s also a little strong for the stock hood, and shutting it makes it difficult also as it tried to lift from the very bottom. Looks good while one though.

            Hood strut kit

Was able to get this on sale, and very glad I did. This is super easy to install and works great. Took about 10-15 minutes and no more prop rod hood issues. Will recommend marking your hood hinge location before unbolting to install. Makes much easier to reinstall and align the hood hinges to there is no miss alignment or re adjustment. Definitely would recommend to any and all.

            Works great

Works as advertised. Instructions are easy to follow. Two people will make the install easier, but you can do it by yourself. You just need something (towel or rag) at the back corner of the hood to hold it in place when you loosen the bolts. Less than an hour to install.

            Must Have for your Mustang

These struts were so easy to put on and I LOVE them! Every time I open the hood, it glides up and stays there - wide open. The are sooooo much better than the factory "stick" to hold up the hood. If you work on your car, even a little bit, Get These!! You won't regret it!

Lower fender mount didn't fit. Had to drill hole to line up with fender bolt. Struts are crazy stiff. Lower ball stud strut mount broke off second time I tried to close the hood. Poor design and low quality materials.

            Strut Kit

The upper brackets fit perfect. However the lower fender brackets don't line up properly the hole that is pre drilled needs to be over more so it aligns better. I got it to work but seriously who measured the lower brackets and said this was alright. Also the directions that come with the item forgets to mention that the clips have to be removed before putting them on the brackets. Had to go back and watch the video like usual with so many products from american muscle.

2017 Mustang GT premium MMD bolt on hood strut kit

This was a fairly simple install a little tedious but well worth it. The fitment is good and it definitely launches the hood up a little too hard, but if you Guide it up it’s perfect. Holds the hood while open does what it says it’s suppose to do. Very simple but very beneficial. I would recommend.

            OKAY

The quality of the kit is ok. Lots of reviews of passenger side lower mount screw hole being off was a problem for me also ( causes a skew on the hood placement ) I wish there was a hole in passenger upper plate to reattach washer line. I'll have about an hour extra of trying to get the hood lines equal. if you have the option of another person to assist with install this extra step can be avoided. Now just to figure out how to adjust hood position. Good ole utube failed to have any videos on this procedure :(

            It almost fit

I am overall pleased with the product, but it wasn't a direct bolt in. The drivers side fender mount was perfect, but the passenger side wasn't. The tab that the mount was to bolt into was just a little bit off and I couldn't thread the bolt into the fender. I just trimmed some material off of the bracket, splashed some paint on it and it was good to go. Also, it is helpful to have some assistance when bolting on the hood brackets. I would have been very difficult to attempt this on my own.
