    Review & Install Video

Hey guys, Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, here with my quick review of the MMD bolt on hood strut kit, available in your choice of either black or chrome, fitting your 2015 and newer Mustang. So the bolt on kit from MMD should appeal to just about every S550 owner out there for the simple reason of cleaning up the engine bay by removing that factory hood prop. Now it's a simple product that serves a purpose and does so on the cheap, guys, as the black option's coming in under $100. The chrome option's going to be slightly more, but both options are currently the most affordable hood strut option on the site here at AM. So why would you want to ditch that factory prop rod in the first place? Well, like I just talked about, guys, it does make for a much more clean appearance under the hood. So if you're big into the show scene, this would make a great addition to your ride. But even if you're not, even if you're just a casual enthusiast, occasional drag racer, or if you just like wrenching in the first place, the hood strut kit from MMD will make life a lot easier. As far as the construction goes, well, again, as you can see, there's really not a whole lot to talk about here, guys, a couple of stamped steel brackets and the hood struts themselves, making for a pretty simple package overall. Color-wise, here's what you're going to be looking at. Again, the matte black powder coat, going to offer more of that OE look, it's going to cost you a little less when compared to the chrome or nickel-plated option, going to offer a little bit more flash, cost you a little bit more in the process. Now it is worth pointing out here, guys, that you can use the MMD kit with both your factory and after-market hoods, but just use caution when using them on lighter hoods, as these hood struts are pretty powerful and it might come up on you a little quicker than before. As the name suggests, this is a bolt on hood strut kit, meaning there's no drilling or permanent modification needed whatsoever. So, as a result, an easy one out of three wrenches on my difficulty meter. A socket set and about an hour's worth of your time is really all you're going to need here. I will say it wouldn't be a bad idea to have an extra set of hands on hand before getting started as you do have to unbolt one side of the hood at a time to get this thing installed, but nevertheless, it still can be done on your own if need be. All right, so I think we all can agree that Ford really did drop the ball by not installing these things on the newer Mustangs in the factory. With that said, the MMD option here will be an affordable solution to your prop rod problem, and you can grab your set here at AmericanMuscle.com.

A Prop Rod, Really? It is really hard to believe that Ford is still equipping their all new S550 Mustangs with an old style prop rod. But now you can add the modern convenience and clean good looks of hood struts to your late model Pony with a set of Modern Muscle Design Hood Struts available from AmericanMuscle.

Style And Strength. Designed to get rid of that ugly prop rod, this set of two powerful yet sleek MMD gas struts not only makes opening your Pony's hood much easier, but they also hold it securely in place. Made from lightweight steel and aluminum, they feature a durable black powder coated finish to give your engine bay a much cleaner appearance.

No Drilling Required. The stamped steel brackets included in this MMD kit are designed to bolt into the existing mounting holes in the hood so there is no drilling required for installation. Struts can be installed on factory hoods as well as aftermarket hoods that use the factory bolt location. If your aftermarket hood is lighter than the factory hood, use caution when opening the hood due to the power of the strut.

Application. This Modern Muscle Design Hood Strut Kit is specifically designed for use on the 2015 to 2017 Ford Mustangs, including the V6, EcoBoost, and GT models. Does not fit Shelby GT350's.

Technical Note. The MMD Bolt on Hood Strut Kit does not fit European Spec Mustangs.

I currently have an MMD hood scoop on my factory GT hood, it makes the good quite a bit heavier than stock. Are the hood struts strong enough to hold the hood open with the added weight of the hood scoop?

    • The MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit is capable of supporting the weight of the stock hood and the MMD Hood scoop.

G'day, I read on the MMD chrome unit, that it doesn't fit RH drive. Do you know why it wouldn't work on a RH drive vehicle?

    • The design of the RHD models sold in Europe and the rest of the world has slightly different mounting points for everything under the hood due to the steering components being on the opposite side. Unfortunately, due to this, the MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit would not be good fits for those cars.

I have a Cervini Stalker hood on my 2015 Mustang, will these fit my hood ?

    • These hood struts were tested to fit only the original position of the factory hood and support the weight of the factory hood. Installing these hood struts on a different aftermarket hood such as the Cervini Stalker hood has not yet been confirmed at this point in time.

I installed without any issues. Aligned and worked perfectly at first. After maybe six or less hood lifts, they will not hold up the hood. I cannot trust them now. My question is, did I cause this problem by adding a very small amount of white lithium grease to the ball joints and sliding metal shafts that go into the hydraulic section? I can not think of why this would have a deliterious effect on the function, but I'll accept the consequences if I screwed things up. Thx. 1 answer
Will this hood kit keep a modified hood (MMD by Foose hood scoop) open, with the added weight? 1 answer
After installation, I went to close my hood and it would not close the final ~6 inches. After looking into why for a bit, i found that the bracket that mounts to the hood was hitting the strut, hard stopping it from closing. The hood all seemed to be aligned correctly, and i followed the vague instructions, but i was hitting this problem on both sides. Tried twice until I gave up. Any ideas what is going on? Would this happen if the balls aren't fully into the socket or something? 1 answer

      Not impressed

The brackets that mount to the fender do not fit correctly. Had to modify them to fit. After that, things work ok. I bet I replace these fairly soon.

      MMD HOOD STRUTS

Received parts quickly. Would have been a easy installation based on the instruction. However, the bracket which fits to the car body, required a cutout to fit around the body bracket. Also longer bolts were required to be purchased, since the body bracket is very thick. Once on, works great.

      Why not from the Factory

This is a great product for holding up your hood. Why these are not on from the factory is crazy. I like the way these sit further back instead of forward like the other brand. Makes getting into the back of the motor easier imo. Installation was a breeze and took me only 15 mins and that was re drilling a hole for the line on the passenger side.

Poor design, super cheap struts, makes hood bow up

My first surprise was the little wire clips that hold the struts on the 10 mm ball. Any other Strut snaps on, and only uses the release to remove them. Immediately one of the tips broke off of the strut, so determined, I went to AutoZone for a Strut that fit- for more investment. I really like the fact that it’s gas strut assisted- Naturally that’s why I purchased the product to illuminate the hood bar from the factory. I’m living with a hump on the drivers side hood line, which has the original strut that came with the kit. The directions should make mention of the wire clips in the struts to install them, not mentioned. Also should mention the exact order to install the struts or you can even reach the wire clips to install them after the Strut is on. I think if American Muscle gave this kit to their employees with 2015 mustangs and have them install them, they may drop this product since- they offer a different version on the same page. I know I have a 6 to 7 hours of my time invested in this project over a three day period- Figuring it out so it works, but I am living with a humped up hood, and less American muscle sends me a better struts. I didn’t even want to bother calling them- because they just say send it back, and I got determined to make it work. That included driving and cutting to fit.
