    Review & Install Video

Hey guys, Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, here with my quick review of the MMD bolt on hood strut kit, available in your choice of either black or chrome, fitting your 2015 and newer Mustang. So the bolt on kit from MMD should appeal to just about every S550 owner out there for the simple reason of cleaning up the engine bay by removing that factory hood prop. Now it's a simple product that serves a purpose and does so on the cheap, guys, as the black option's coming in under $100. The chrome option's going to be slightly more, but both options are currently the most affordable hood strut option on the site here at AM. So why would you want to ditch that factory prop rod in the first place? Well, like I just talked about, guys, it does make for a much more clean appearance under the hood. So if you're big into the show scene, this would make a great addition to your ride. But even if you're not, even if you're just a casual enthusiast, occasional drag racer, or if you just like wrenching in the first place, the hood strut kit from MMD will make life a lot easier. As far as the construction goes, well, again, as you can see, there's really not a whole lot to talk about here, guys, a couple of stamped steel brackets and the hood struts themselves, making for a pretty simple package overall. Color-wise, here's what you're going to be looking at. Again, the matte black powder coat, going to offer more of that OE look, it's going to cost you a little less when compared to the chrome or nickel-plated option, going to offer a little bit more flash, cost you a little bit more in the process. Now it is worth pointing out here, guys, that you can use the MMD kit with both your factory and after-market hoods, but just use caution when using them on lighter hoods, as these hood struts are pretty powerful and it might come up on you a little quicker than before. As the name suggests, this is a bolt on hood strut kit, meaning there's no drilling or permanent modification needed whatsoever. So, as a result, an easy one out of three wrenches on my difficulty meter. A socket set and about an hour's worth of your time is really all you're going to need here. I will say it wouldn't be a bad idea to have an extra set of hands on hand before getting started as you do have to unbolt one side of the hood at a time to get this thing installed, but nevertheless, it still can be done on your own if need be. All right, so I think we all can agree that Ford really did drop the ball by not installing these things on the newer Mustangs in the factory. With that said, the MMD option here will be an affordable solution to your prop rod problem, and you can grab your set here at AmericanMuscle.com.

A Prop Rod, Really? It is really hard to believe that Ford is still equipping their all new S550 Mustangs with an old style prop rod. But now you can add the modern convenience and clean good looks of hood struts to your late model Pony with a set of Modern Muscle Design Hood Struts available from AmericanMuscle.

Style And Strength. Designed to get rid of that ugly prop rod, this set of two powerful yet sleek MMD gas struts not only makes opening your Pony's hood much easier, but they also hold it securely in place. Made from lightweight steel and aluminum, they feature a durable black powder coated finish to give your engine bay a much cleaner appearance.

No Drilling Required. The stamped steel brackets included in this MMD kit are designed to bolt into the existing mounting holes in the hood so there is no drilling required for installation. Struts can be installed on factory hoods as well as aftermarket hoods that use the factory bolt location. If your aftermarket hood is lighter than the factory hood, use caution when opening the hood due to the power of the strut.

Application. This Modern Muscle Design Hood Strut Kit is specifically designed for use on the 2015 to 2018 Ford Mustangs, including the V6, EcoBoost, and GT models. Does not fit Shelby GT350's.

Technical Note. The MMD Bolt on Hood Strut Kit does not fit European Spec Mustangs.

    • We apologize for the inconvenience you are experiencing. Modern Muscle Design does not have any clips available separately, however, these clips are very common at most hardware stores and are fairly inexpensive. I currently have an MMD hood scoop on my factory GT hood, it makes the good quite a bit heavier than stock. Are the hood struts strong enough to hold the hood open with the added weight of the hood scoop?

    ShaneN

    • The MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit is capable of supporting the weight of the stock hood and the MMD Hood scoop.

G'day, I read on the MMD chrome unit, that it doesn't fit RH drive. Do you know why it wouldn't work on a RH drive vehicle?

    RexE

    • The design of the RHD models sold in Europe and the rest of the world has slightly different mounting points for everything under the hood due to the steering components being on the opposite side. Unfortunately, due to this, the MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit would not be good fits for those cars.

I do not recommend this strut

On my 2015 ECO this strut kit was a disaster. The depth of the flange on the passenger side upper angle bracket cut into my battery box cover. If you buy this, add a piece of door trim, or otherwise cover the sharp edges and corners on the bracket flange before you close your hood. With the hood closed the struts were either bottomed out or there was so much spring force that it pushed the hood up and away from the fenders on both sides. Once the struts were removed the hood went back to the proper shape. A.M. was good about processing a refund but be careful with this product.

      Do s not fit 2018

These fit very poorly on a 2018. They cause the hood to be raised where the hood meets the windshield.

Hood Strut Kit - Easy Install

Being a non-wrencher I was a little concerned about buying the MMD bolt on hood strut kit. But after reading the instructions, it seemed fairly simple so I jumped right into it. After marking the original mount positions with a sharpie I had the new bolt on struts on within 15 min's with the hood completely aligned.

Didn't fit 2018 out of the box

I like these, but I had to modify the fender bracket. I suppose there must be a difference from 15-17 and 18 because they didn't fit the fender. I just cut a notch out of the bracket and repainted it, but never the less it didn't bolt on. They work great, and I really don't understand why Ford didn't do this to begin with.

      Doesn't fit 2018

Product looks well built; however the fender side bracket hole alignment is off. Had to return and purchase a different brand kit.

MMD Bolt on Hood Strut Kit - Black

The Hood struts were installed and are working as expected. It's defenitely better than dealing with the factory hood support rod.

MMD bolt on hood strut kit

This kit didn’t fit well for me. Was a pretty simple install but my hood was raised and had huge gaps on the side. I reinstalled and repositioned them numerous times and ultimately ended up taking them off. Waste of money for me. They were powerful for raising the hood tho.

      Second one installed!

I had installed the kit on my 2010 Mustang, and this was the first accessory I was going to install on my 2017 Pony! It went on easily and quickly, and is even better than the one on the 2010. Fast and silent opening hood now. I recommend it to any "Stang" owner who has to fight the hood support rod! You won't be disappointed!!!!!!!

      Hood Strut Kit

The MMD Bolt-on Hood Strut kit was fairly simple to install and definitely is an improvement over the OEM hood prop rod. However, there is one small, albeit, VERY important factor to be mindful of: The four little retainer clips that assure the telescoping rod stays in the brackets must be inserted properly. They are rather a pain to try to find the "blind" hole to reinsert the pin into after the brackets are installed and the rods are in place. DO NOT DROP THEM as they are rather small and black and very hard to see on a ,say, black asphalt driveway. Once these are properly inserted, however, you will be good to go. Installation time, including looking for two dropped (and found) retainer rings, was about an hour.

      Product design

Great to have that good prop gone for good! Easy to do if you have a 2nd pair of hands. Hood raised the width of the bracket at the hinge and a little off putting. Overall satisfied with install. Car show Must!

      Love it

I first put a set of these on my 04 Stang. Boy did I love the ease of them holding the hood up and not worrying about it slamming down on me. Putting them on my 18 GT was just a tad more difficult as I had to cut away part of the bottom plate to get it to fit correctly. The extra work was well worth it.

      Lacking

Struts work great, but original fender bolts for bottom brace are not long enough , therefore you have to make a trip to your local auto parts store and buy longer bolts

      Love it!

Took about an hour to install with basic hand tools. My ONLY issue is the shocks have a small pin for retention and it a PIA to get it on after the shocks are snapped on. They should be the style with a spring clip so you can snap then on without removing the clip first.

      Better than prop rod

The price speak about the quality of the product. Easy install but needed a 2nd hand to hold the hood. Nicier look than the standard prop rod. Doesn’t have a hole to clip back the wiper hose. I hope the product will last longer.
