Review & Installation Video

Hey, Stephanie with AmericanMuscle.com here with the Rally Stripe six speed shift knob for 2015 and up GTs, EcoBoosts and V6 Mustangs. The Rally Stripe shift knob is a nice shift knob for the MT82 equipped S550s that are looking for a nice round type of shift knob to make a statement with. Now this obviously isn't a plain shift knob, and it's going to stand out for sure in the interior. A lot of people take advantage of the individualism that a shift knob can bring to the interior of a car. And while minor, the shift knob is one of the connecting pieces between the car and driver, so it needs to be comfortable. Now this particular Rally Stripe shift knob is black with a running pony on both sides here. But there are a few slightly different styles of the Rally Stripe shift knob. They're all going to have the race inspired Rally Stripes and six speed shift pattern, of course, but there's also a plain black version that's doesn't have a pony, and a plain black on white version as well if this one doesn't suit your taste. While they all are styled differently, they all have inlay engravings. And the engravings have been polished smooth, which is nice, because then you don't have to worry about fading. So there are a ton of different types of material to chose from when looking for a shift knob. The material and finish are definitely something to consider because different types of material have a different feel. Then you also have to consider how the material will react to temperature changes like the heat of summertime or the cold of wintertime. The Rally Stripe shift knobs are all made from a resin compound for strength and durability and none of them are sensitive to heat or cold like other materials can be. The shift knobs also have a two-and-one-eighth diameter, so they are a little bit larger than the factory shift knob. So these shift knobs are made for the S550, so they are reverse lockout compatible. They're specifically designed keeping in mind keeping up the pull up style reverse lockout mechanism, but they don't leave a large gap between the bottom of the knob and the top of the factory boot either. As far as price, these shift knobs are right in between $50 and $100, which is in line with most of the other options that are out there for this type of knob. There are some more expensive billet aluminum knobs that are also available if you prefer the look and feel of those. So the install here is really pretty easy. The shift knob doesn't come with any loctite and you're probably going to want some. So I'd suggest just picking some up before the install. The shift knob's obviously very easy to access and you're going to want to start the install by putting the car in reverse. This will help you get the height of the shift knob without any trouble. The factory shift knob just comes off easily by using the normal righty-tighty lefty-loosey rule and then it's just a matter of putting some loctite on the threads of the shifter handle so your new shift knob doesn't back out when you start grabbing gears. Then you take your new shift knob and thread it down into place until it gets tight, but then just do one rotation backwards to make sure you're giving enough room for the reverse lockout. You don't want to install the knob and then not be able to get the car in reverse. Just make sure that the knob is straight, so it doesn't look goofy later on. And then let it sit so that the loctite can set. It probably needs about an hour or two to be safe or an afternoon if you really want to be safe. Overall, this is a one wrench install on our scale here and should take just about five minutes to complete as long as we don't take the loctite set time. Wrapping things up there, the Rally Stripe shift knob is a classic eight ball style shift knob with a six speed shift pattern for the MT82 equipped S550 Mustang. It's reverse lockout compatible. There are a few different designs. They're all made from a resin compound and very easy to install. You can check these out more online along with all of your other shift knob options and for all things Mustang, keep it right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

Have you got this shift knob in black/Grey(horse, numbers...) too? I hope i need no distance (jam nut).... Wich shift knob are for the ecoboost 2015-2017 without a jam nut?

  • We do not carry the Rally Stripe 6-Speed Shift Knob w/ Running Pony Logo in black and grey color combo. Most after market shift knobs do require a jam nut to ensure the proper facing of the knob. Feel free to call or chat in so we can help you find the perfect shift knob for your Ecoboost.

Running Pony shift knob. I would just like to take a minute to maybe help with some useful info. Put your car in reverse to loosen the factory knob, but then put the shifter in first gear and then before you put the Loctite on run the new knob on for a test fit down until it bottoms out to see and then back it out 1 turn. Put your Loctite on and you will know just how far to go with the new shifter knob. Loctite comes in different types, I used threadlocker 243 blue because some day you may need to remove the shift knob. All in all LOOKS GREAT. NICE ADDITION !

    Great Looking Shift Knob

This is one great looking shift knob. It sets off the interior nicely and feels better to me than the stock knob. The knob appears to be very solid quality wise as well. Keep in mind, this is not just a screw off the old knob and screw on the new one job. If you try to screw the new one all the way down, you wont be able to put the car in reverse. There is nothing that comes with the knob to set the height or clocking or lock the knob in place. You will need to purchase some loctite as others have said. It just takes playing with it a few minutes to get the height and clocking set. What I did was unscrew the old knob and then I pulled up the reverse collar as if the car were in reverse. I screwed the new one on until it made light contact and tested to see if reverse would work fine. It did. So then I took the new knob back off, put the loctite on and repeated the process to set the height and clocking. It has set up solid with no problems. An easier way would probably be to just put the car in reverse and install the new knob that way rather than holding the collar up but I didnt think of that till later. In any event, its a simple install.

    Broke it on the install

So, you would think this would be a no brainer install but it wasn't at least for me. Put the car in reverse and was able to remove the OEM knob no problem. Put the car back in neutral (which is what I think my mistake was) started to unscrew it to put thread lock on. It got stuck and then with a little pressure the center of the know completely popped off. Ended up gluing it back together but it looks meh now. Not sure why it failed, probably just a fluke but I guess I am stuck with it now. Put the car back in reverse add the thread lock to the shifter knob screwed it down and left it sit for 24 hours all is good, except I can see a line around the knob now.

Very 1st modification to my 2016 GT with 22 miles

At the dealership first time I opened the door to my ordered 2016 GT with 22 miles on her and unscrewed the stock knob and installed the new one. Completely changed the look of the dash area. My wife even commented that it looked awesome, and she thought it was silly to bring with me to do at the dealership. The finish is first class the feel is prefect (I have large hands). You do not need the lockout nut but you will need to use lock tight and let dry over night.

    Handsome Shift Knob

Shift knob looks good. Keep in mind that there's nothing that locks the clocking or sets the height. You'll have to use something to lock this. Nothing comes included to do this. I used loctite and it works just fine.

    Great texture and perfect size

I have rather large hands yet, I find the shift ball to fit nicely in my hand. In addition, it had a nice smooth texture yet, i don't find it slippery in my hand. The only gotcha is that you'll need some sort adhesement compound to keep in place but, that's actually in the instructions.

    Wonderful Upgrade

Let me start by saying the factory shift knob is great, I've had no issues with it, however, this knob from AM was such an immediate upgrade for me. It sits a little higher (not much, only because of the reverse lock out feature on the shifter itself). This knob is slightly bigger too, it fits PERFECT in the palm of my hand, making me feel like I have more control. It is absolutely badass looking as well. I couldn't be happier. One other note, the factory shifter is HARD to unscrew, and you will definitely need to use licktite blue on the new knob to lock it in place.

    Poor fit.

The ball does not have a groove so the top edge of the reverse lever can slide up into the ball. The ball must be floated above the lever leaving a gap between the bottom of the ball and the top edge of the reverse lever.

    Shift Knob

This is a great mod for your Mustang. Installation is simple and it looks awesome. If you use loctite to keep knob from loosening, put shifter in reverse to make sure collar will lift up far enough before loctite dries. The only thing that may be a drawback is the cost. A little pricey, but it looks awesome !!
