    Review & Install Video

What's going on, guys? Adam here with AmericanMuscle.com, and today I'm bringing you my review of the Rear Seat Delete Kit in black for all '05 to '14 Mustang Coupes. So if you're the type of S197 Coupe owner looking for a way to drop some weight to get more power to the ground for the track, or if you're just looking for a sporty two-seater look, then a rear seat delete kit might be for you. I do wanna point out, before we jump into details, that this kit here is only gonna be for the S197 Coupe owners. So if you're rocking a soft top convertible, this kit here will not be for you, but I'm sure there are other options out there on the market. Now the guys going to the track often enough to really wanna shed some weight typically aren't taxiing people around in their back seats, which means the rear seats are actually just dead weight. For those S197 Coupe owners out there who are just looking for a two-seater sport styling, this really does, appearance-wise, give you a natural black finish to look like your Mustang came from the factory with just two seats. This way you can stop being the taxi, and you'll have an excuse to get out of being designated driver when you go out responsibly with your friends. As far as the materials go for the Rear Seat Delete Kit, it's made of a quarter-inch thick plywood wrapped in premium black upholstery to ensure that clean, natural look. When it comes to the appearance aspect, it looks really good, blends in with the interior of the car, and will look very natural. When it comes to the quality and build, though, I'll be honest, it does leave a little bit to be desired. Now like I said, it is made of a quarter-inch thick plywood, which in all honesty is pretty flimsy. It doesn't support too much weight, so you wanna be careful when you're getting back there to clean your rear windshield. Now you wanna keep in mind that this was made to reduce weight, so if they made this wood any thicker, you'd just be replacing the seat weight with the same weight in wood, which would kinda defeat the purpose. The only other complaint I have about this kit is that the Rear Seat Delete on the back doesn't necessarily bolt on as easily as the front. Now it does include plastic clips and all the hardware necessary, but some people have said that the plastic clips for the back don't exactly line up with the holes on the vehicle. So it might be a good idea to head out to a hardware store and pick up some longer bolts. Measure the size. You'll be able to figure out which bolts you need, and you'll get it to work properly. And all the installation should go smoothly from there. The price of this kit may seem a little bit high, considering the materials, but it comes in right around the $150 mark. Now off the bat it does seem a little bit pricey, but you do wanna consider that it takes all the hassle of buying the products, materials, measuring, cutting, stapling, all of that has been taken out of your hands and done for you with this kit. One thing I definitely wanna touch on, and I did talk about it a little bit earlier, is that since the materials are pretty thin, they are not meant to hold any weight. It's not a safe seat for anybody, not even a heavy pet. You definitely wanna keep this in mind. So the installation of a Rear Seat Delete Kit is pretty straightforward. It just requires a couple of hand tools including a couple of sockets. You'll start by removing the lower cushions by releasing the clips that are between the cushions and the carpeted cross-member below. Once you do that, they'll lift right up and out. So from here, you wanna fold down the top cushion and remove the bolts next to the U-shaped latches. From there, you can fold the seat back up and remove the four bolts by the lower hinge, and remove the back seats. At this point, you'll have the option of removing the seat belt, which is not entirely necessary. But if you do wanna do it, this would be your chance because once you pass this point you won't be able to take them out. To install the lower portion of the Rear Seat Delete, it's as simple as entering the pins into the holes provided. Now, you may need to remove the plastic clips on the wiring harness underneath just to make this sit flush and tight. The installation of the back portion may give you some trouble, as I mentioned before. Now you wanna make sure, once you get it installed, that the back portion is not wedged behind it but fits on top of the lower end. This install is pretty straightforward. You'll be looking at spending about an hour of your time with some simple hand tools. And I definitely give it a one out of three wrenches on the Difficulty Scale. Just to quickly wrap things up, guys, if you're looking for an easy way to get rid of those rear seats, either to delete some weight for the track or just to get that cool two-seater styling, then this Rear Seat Delete Kit in black may be for you. And you can get yours right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

will this hold a custom speaker box? I was wondering if this seat delete kit would hold a custom speaker box and subs. i dont want to sacrifice trunk space just to have subs in my car so i figured i could get a seat delete kit as a compromise.

    • It would but you would have to customize the seat delete for structural support as the kit is made of 1/4 plywood and not designed to hold the additional weight.

The Video states 1/4 inch plywood, a reviewer states 1/8 inch. Is it quarter or eighth inch thick?

    • This kit will be 1/4" thick.

I have a 2005 GT Convertible, will the rear seat delete fit my car and will the X-Brace fit as well?

why wouldn't this fit a convertible?

    • The rear seat section of a convertible has a different platform and fitment than a coupe so the SpeedForm Rear Seat Delete Kit was engineered to fit with the coupe body style and unfortunately doesn't work with convertibles.

      Perfect product for the price.

Dunno what everyone is talking about the holes not lining up. Mine fit perfectly on my 2012 GT. Only thing you need to do is go to Autozone and buy the GM rear hood seal retainers. The number on the top of the box is 465270. These are for the back piece of the kit as the retainers supplied were slightly too small.

      It works

It did the job. Looks pretty empty in the back. The wood used for the kit is very thin. If any weight is applied to the boards it will probably break.

      Sporty two seater feel

After removing the rear seats and installing the delete kit (by the way the plastic fasteners are ok at best, I used two long bolts with washers to hold the top portion of the kit in) it really changed the feel of the interior. I’d suggest this kit if you want to have a more sporty looking interior and or you just don’t use your back seats any more ;)

NOT WORTH THE MONEY, DO NOT BUY THIS!!!

I received this part as a gift from my family, I was excited to get it and install it as part of a complete renovation on my interior. When I received this kit I was incredibly disappointed. The kit is two extremely flimsy 1/2 inch pieces of plywood, poorly wrapped with automotive carpet. The carpeting is only stapled on the edges, it's not even glued to the plywood. It comes with 4 cheap plastic clips to install the boards, the holes for which aren't even punched through the carpeting. The price for this is exorbitantly high, considering the quality of you receive. I am going to return this part and then make it myself with a little time and far less money.

The kit actually looks really good. I had the red seats but I'm murdering my 06 Ebony so I was looking for an easy alternative. This kit is light, has an easy fitment, and looks great.

      Overpriced Do Not Buy

Hats off to AM for prompt service and delivery. Other than that, the kit is CHEAP, DOES NOT FIT, The Seat Back clips did NOT fasten. The material is WAY TOO FLIMSY... I wouldn’t trust using it for more than a woman’s purse in terms of storage and even that’s questionable. I had to modify it considerably more than I should have for having paid $160. You can make this product for much less than the asking price. I would recommend that rather than wasting your time having to run to the hardware store to fix what’s advertised as a bolt in kit.

Couldn’t be more pleased with Rear Seat Delete Kit

It was just as advertised. I attached the bottom with a piece of Velcro. And the back fits nice and snug without anything. I weighed all items, and according to my scale I saved about 25 lbs. And it looks factory installed. Very pleased.

It's good and bad but it's not ugly.

I used two fiber board cylinders to support the lower panel and now its holds more weight. The back panel I held in place with a center mounted velcro fastener so I can simply push it open for more cargo space. Nice looking kit when it's in place. Looks factory.

      Seat delete

My cage fabricator installed it. While I would expect it to look better if it came from the factory it does exactly what I wanted. Hides the unfinished area behind the back seat and gives my track car a better look than being stripped

      Rear Seat Delete

I've done several mods to my Mustang, but this one is not really one of my favorites. As many have noted in their reviews, the part is kind of cheaply made. Basically plywood wrapped in carpet with a few holes drilled into it. That's it. And they couldn't even get that right. As many people are mentioning, the holes don't even come close to lining up on the top piece. Had to modify the part. Overall it does what it's supposed to do. I'm just not that overly impressed with the appearance. I like the way the seats look better and will be returning to that look. To each their own, but this one I wish I'd done without.
