Justin from AmericanMuscle.com, we're here with Chris Thompson from Airaid. He stopped by the shop to tell us a little more about these great Airaid products. We're very familiar with Airaid; we use them on our project cars with great success. Chris, what can you tell us about Airaid that makes it so unique? "Everything we do is digitally designed. It's engineered to fit, it's engineered to work, it's engineered to work without any special tuning. Now, tuning is much, much better. You guys offer a lot of great choices in aftermarket tuning. It'll only enhance the performance of the Mustang. We design our intakes so there's no special gluing required, there's no cutting or hacking of the engine required. If somebody decided to put a stock intake back on, they don't have to go back to Ford to buy another part to put the piece back on. Every intake we do is digitally designed. It's all about the design of the airflow and the linear charge to the throttle body. We use the rotational molding not so much for the heat soaking, but for the shape of the tube we can come up with. By using the rotational molding, it allows us to really give the right shape and form to make sure the product works well." We're very excited—we've got our 2013 Mustang here, probably not even 10 miles on this thing yet, and we already have an Airaid intake on it. Tell us a little more about that. "This is awesome. We're really excited to be here today. This is the first Airaid intake on a 2013 Mustang. We're really excited to be here with you guys. As you can see it fits. We know for sure it fits. We believe we have a hit. We'll do a little bit more testing on it before we release it to the public, but that should happen anytime now." Now, you were telling me earlier, you're working with some legends in the Mustang world. "Well, we're excited about working with Parnelli Jones and his son PJ. Parnelli's been instrumental in helping us come along with the Boss 302 intakes we're trying to develop. Nobody knows the heritage of the Boss 302 better than Parnelli Jones. We worked with PJ on the side by side utility vehicles (Razors, Rhinos, and TRX's). We also sponsored him in the past on his endeavors in the American Le Mans Series, which he ran last year." Chris, thank you so much for educating us on your great Airaid products. And as always, you can find those great Airaid products right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

Increase Horsepower and Torque. Airaid Cold Air Intake Systems are computer designed to give your 5.0 Coyote engine maximum air flow, which translates to more horsepower, torque and better fuel efficiency. This Airaid CAI kit completely replaces your 2011-2014 GT Mustangs restrictive factory air box and paper filter element with a high flow Airaid filter assembly for an increase of 11 more horsepower and 11 more torque at the rear wheels.

No Tune Required. Unlike other Cold Air Intakes on the market for the 2011-2014 GT Mustangs, the Airaid CAI does not require a computer re-tune when installed with the included "Modular Venturi Tube". The Modular Venturi Tube (MVT) can be removed for off-road use when combined with a custom tune. By utilizing state of the art computer-aided designs, Airaid Intake Systems offer unmatched fit, finish, and power!

Superior Filtration. Each cold air intake provides superior air filtration, since it includes an Airaid Premium Filter with SynthaMax® technology. SynthaMax® is a synthetic nano-fiber material that traps the smallest dirt particles that ordinary cotton-gauze "performance" filters just can't capture. Airaid Premium Filters, with SynthaMax® can capture particulates down to 2 microns in size. And best of all Premium Filters are washable and re-usable saving you money.

Application. This Airaid Cold Air Intake System with SynthaMax filter is specifically designed to fit the 2011-2014 5.0L GT Mustangs and does not require re-tuning the vehicles computer when installed with the included "Modular Venturi Tube". The SynthaMax filter is available in Blue, Black, or Red. Please choose filter color from the drop down option above.

I am looking in the specs, but do not see the answer. I am also looking at purchasing a 90mm throttle body for the car. Does the tube go over the body or will there be a restriction? What is the tube diameter? It is probably in plain site but cannot see it. Thank you.

Will this CAI work an a 2012 Boss 302 even though it advertises for a 11-14 GT?

JeremyS

  • This will only work with the 11-14 GT model Mustangs as the Boss 302 intake manifold is different and will not accept this cold air intake without modification.

How can I keep this filter from getting soaked with water and not working?

Mike24

  • I purchased a foam insert from JLT's website for about $10 and inserted it into the heat extractor on that side and it complete solve the problem. If you contact Airaid they will send you a water shield for free, but it covers the filter completely and in my opinion didn't look very good and is way more work that the piece from JLT.

What is the difference/advantages of this one with the Dryer filter against using the one with the oiled filter? This intake states that it uses a Synthamax dry filter. What are the differences in using this intake versus the Synthaflow oiled filter?

Sloop

  • Firstly a lot of people think that the oiled filters don't filter as well until they get dirty, also they could contaminate the MAF with excess oil and cause faulty readings possibly causing damage... I agree with the filter ability when clean, but having a MAF contaminated is not something that really happens unless you way over oil your filter when you recharge it. I bought the dry filter because it would take less maintenance over it's life, I don't have to buy a recharge kit when it gets too dirty, just wash and dry it, and I think it will filter better than the standard oiled filter while still increasing airflow over stock. Also I wanted the black filter. I hope that answers your question.

Everything performance wise was great with this intake. The only thing was the vents in the hood let water into the cai box even with the weatherstrip on and that left me unable to drive my car in the rain so i had to put the stock airbox back on. I even bought the foam piece JLT sells to block the bottom of the vent so water doesn't get in but it will only hold so much water. Disappointed that the product cost so much money and i cant even drive my car in the rain because of it.

    Nice CAI!

Very well engineered piece.Easy installation and the blue filter goes well with the color of my 2014 GT/CS.Another plus is it now comes with the rain shield, although I haven't installed it due to the fact ive never had any issues with rain. But its nice to know I have that option if there ever is a problem.

Great!!!! Wish I would have gotten it sooner. Helped my low end response, also running the 93race ghost cam tune!!! (Awesome tune btw) I also have a 1inch helix cut TB spacer so with that and the CAI, when the TB opens a little you hear it suck hard followed with a whistle... Pulls really hard...

    Dry filter

Water got into my air box in the car washer. I bought the JLT water shields for the heat extractor vents on my 2014 hood. They seemed to help a lot. Other than that it's a pretty good cold air. I liked the idea of the dry filter.

Great in Dry weather but not in heavy rain.

Bought this for my 14 GT (using with SCT wireless BAMA tunes). The combination has been phenomenal (until today). Left work after a typical heavy amount of rain. When I started the car, it died. With the 14 GT's, the rain made it's way through the heat extractor onto the filter. After several attempts, I was able to get it running and drive 45 miles home with the check engine light and rough idle. I was able to clear the code at home. I ordered the pre-filter to hopefully avoid this situation again. I am guessing that is why the 15's have a clear sealed cover.

    No issues so far

I bought this on black Friday for a good price, shipping time was as expected, and the install was very quick and easy with minimal tools. The look under the hood is again as expected, and I haven't taken it to a dyno to see any performance differences, and I did leave in the insert because I don't have a tune yet. It did come with the sound tube removal and that was easy to take out. I have a 2014 GT with the hood scoops and I wanted the filter protector so I called Airaid and they sent the drip shield for free. There is also a cover available for $40 from them as well that pre-filters down to 4 microns. Overall I like the product and the dry filter and I would buy it again.

    Best Intake

I'll make this sweet and simple. The intake is way better looking and bigger than the stock intake. I get nothing but compliments all the time. It utilizes the factory air inlet so it actually looks like it was supposed to be part of the car. It uses a dry filter which is good because oiled filters mess up your MAF. It makes an awesome whistle noise at low RPM's but a low deep tone at the higher RPM's. Goes AWESOME with a tune. NO you do not need a tune to have this intake as long as you install it with the modular venturi tube which is included along with all the other hardware you will need. Overall I couldn't be happier with this intake. It took me a long time before I pulled the trigger on this and I am kicking myself every day. Don't waste any more time pondering which intake to get. Whip out that credit card and purchase the best intake you will ever have. THIS INTAKE IS WORTH IT!!!!!!

    Great product

This is the second time I’ve bought this product. I traded my first GT and instantly regretted it. After a year I was able to get another GT and this was the first ting I bought. Install is pretty simple and fits well. Airaid now included a shield for the filter so water doesn’t drip into the intake through the hood vents.

    Easy Install

This was a very easy install as stated in many other reviews. I did not notice any power gains with the addition. I did notice that on my 2012 GT premium with a Roush axle back mod the tone is much deeper. I did notice that I have a 1-2 mpg increase on the high way and about a 1-2 mile decrease around town, due the the fact that I love the low grumble and continue to keep stepping on the gas at every light... Seems a little pricey for the fact that it is just plastic. But overall good mod. Dave

    Air aid intake

I chosed the air aid because I wanted to run it without a tune. That's right no tune required for this beast. Install took 45 minutes and I felt the performance gains immediately. I was looking for a oil-less (dry) filter and this suites my needs. Easy to clean with no recharge kit needed. If I could do it over again I would of bought this months ago. I've struggled between this and the JLT. No regrets this was the intake for my 2013 gt. I've noticed harder pulls above 3500rpm and it puts that smile back on my face. I live in Houston where it can ran on a dimes notice. Haven't had any issue yet with water getting into my hood vents and bogging me down. (Knock on wood)

    Great addition

Was very easy to install. Straight forward instructions. I was pleased that I had the street addition since the tuner did not arrive with the CAI. I do not hear any sucking of air like others have reported. I have noticed that the CAI does keep the intake air at or near outside air temps which the old intake would be 10 to 15 degrees higher which translated into higher head temps. I do not know if the CAI alone gave me the fuel boost, but when the car was all stock I was getting 17 to 18 MPH on the highways and now my last trip I got 20 to 21 on the highway going between 70 to 80 mph with cruise control and not hitting the gas.
