Hey I’m Justin with, and I’m here with a very popular product here on the site, and a must have for any SN95. I’m talking about MMD’s bolt on hood strut kit, for all 94-98 Mustangs, available in your choice of either blue, black, or chrome. MMD is an industry leading appearance brand, that has caught the attention of many Mustang owners out there, thanks to their cool and innovative parts for Mustangs of all ages. So what do they do? Well for one thing they completely eliminate the ugly factory prop rod, by using these two gas powered struts to hold the hood open, In addition they also make raising the hood a lot easier as well, which isn’t the biggest deal in the world, but it certainly doesn’t hurt. As I mentioned earlier the kit is available in a black powder coated finish which we have installed on our 98 GT behind me, or a bright chrome finish, like I have here. Included in the package you’ll find both gas powered struts, along with the 4 necessary mounting brackets. This 100% bolt on kit installs easily in about an hour’s time and requires no drilling whatsoever. In fact, both the upper and lower mounting brackets install using the existing factory bolt locations. When you’ve finished up the installation, don’t forget to remove that factory prop rod, since you won’t be needing it anymore. Chances are when you pop the hood it’s either to show off what you’ve done, or to turn a wrench or two, you don’t want the hood prop in the way when you’re doing some work, and you don’t want some ugly piece of metal to be front and center when you’re showing off some new cold air intake. Do yourself and your engine bay a favor, and check out one of these MMD bolt on hood strut kits right here at

Prop Rod? Are you still using that old style factory prop rod that Ford installed in your SN95 Mustang? Well then join the new millennium with a set of Modern Muscle Design Hood Struts from AmericanMuscle for clean modern looks and convenience.

Style And Strength. Designed to get rid of that old ugly prop rod, this set of two powerful yet sleek MMD gas struts not only makes opening your Pony's hood much easier, but also holds it securely in place. Made from lightweight steel and aluminum, they have a black powercoated finish to give your engine bay a much cleaner appearance.

No Drilling Required. The stamped steel brackets included in this MMD kit are designed to bolt into the existing mounting holes in the hood so there is no drilling required for installation. Struts can be installed on factory hoods as well as aftermarket hoods that use the factory bolt location. If your aftermarket hood is lighter than the factory hood, use caution when opening the hood due to the power of the strut.

Application. This Modern Muscle Design Hood Strut Kit is specifically designed for use on the 1994 to 1998 Ford Mustangs, including the V6, GT and SVT Cobra models. The Kit includes two black gas powered struts, mounting brackets, and all the required mounting hardware.

This kit bolts on in about 10 minutes and works very well. Don't listen to comments about bolt-on kits being a poorer design than ones requiring drilling. I should have bought one of these years ago.

These look exactly like the trunk-lid struts. Are they the same? I ask because that would bode well for future availability of replacement struts.

  • Hello! The MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit does not use the same struts as the trunk.

I'd like to get this set for my '96 SVT. I read in the reviews people returning these because they don't clear CC Plates, I have MM one's on mine, can anyone who also has a '94-'98 Cobra with aftermarket CC Plates confirm for a fact that this kit will fit my car and not end up a return? If so, thanks!

  • I do not have a Cobra gut I do have a GT with CC plates and have no issues with the fitment of this product going on two years now. Not a hood rod prompting person anyway. You should be fine...

Carbon Fiber Hood? I see people saying they work great for fiberglass hoods, but I have a Carbon Fiber hood, and it's very very light, will these cause bowing when I go to shut the hood? Are they too strong for normal use? I also got rid of the factory hood latch and rely solely on hood pins to keep my hood down.

  • I also have a carbon fiber hood with only hood pins to secure it. I have had no issue with "bowing" of the hood when closing it. The only problem I had was installing it. The hood I have had wider reinforcement panels that ran paralell with the edge of the hood that interferred with the installation. I had to shim the bolts on the fender to allow clearance for the hood to close. Once installed I have had no problems with the struts, and love not have the prop rod in the way when workibg under the hood.

I have Maximum Motorsports, Caster/Camber plates, will this fit? Just wondering if the bracket will be able to fit with the CC plates i have on my car currently..?

  • Yes, I also have the Maximum Motorsports CC plates on mine and there is plenty of clearance. No concerns.

MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit

Great product, very well designed and instruction were very good. They installed in about 30 minutes and looked great but due to the aftermarket caster/camber plates I had previously installed the bracket would hit on it and not allow the hood to close properly so I had to return them. The return process was excellent. I sent them back via the post office and got a credit notice from American Muscle within 3 days after I put them in the mail. I was very disappointed that I couldn't keep them on my car and had to return them.

    Great idea

looks like a good product and is easy to install but the left side of the hood did not line up with the fender after installation, I do not believe it was the product because the right side lined up good, this was for a 98 cobra convertible, also American Muscle stood behind the product and made it right.

    better than hood prop

the stock hood props are awful. they are not a good look and they make working under the hood a nightmare. these hood struts where an easy install a clean look and make working under the hood a lot easier. i would say if you have a hood prop this is a must have

Easy MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit

I've had a hard time with my hood blowing down during car shows. The factory prop bar never holds. I was always afraid it would crack my hood. Ordered the MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit and received it in two day. Took all of 20 min to install with absolutely no alterations of the kit or my car. Everything bolted up perfectly. Hood opens a closes like a dream. No bar to get into my way. I do want to paint the bolts and nuts to match the kit, the reds stock nuts and bolts stick out and look a bit strange. It's an easy and useful product to add to your Mustang.

    Works Great!

They look and work great but I had a few problems putting them on. First of all, the picture on the instructions is a little confusing. It looks like the finder bolt that you remove is further from the windshield than it is. I took out the wrong one and found out it was the wrong one. Second, when you bolt on the top plate, it looks like it is not going to mount properly. The hood nut really has to pull the plate in to the hood or you will have a gap between the hood and the plate. But I did get it all worked out and installed,

    MMD bolt on strut kit

Easy to install as no drilling into hood Only problem was that one of the brackets was slightly bent --once I straightened bracket it lined up to OEM mounting bolts

    Excellent fit, easy install

This is the second set of MMD hood struts I've installed. The last was on my '11 GT, and although that was a very easy install, it did require a bit of work around the sound induction tube. This set went on my '98 Cobra and I can't believe how easy it was. Literally 5 minutes, perfect install. And they work great! Highly recommend if you spend any time at all under your hood.

No cutting or drilling. It uses the existing bolts and I had it on my 96GT Conv. In about a half an hour. I ordered one for my 09 since.

MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit - Black (94-98 All)

Extremely well made kit! Installation took a grand total of 20 minutes. The quality of the materials of this kit is why I chose it over some of the other cheaper kits. The pieces are all well designed, require ZERO alterations/modifications to the body/hood (fit and finish were excellent) and they are all powder coated to prevent corrosion. Definitely recommend! Looks way better than that ugly prop rod!

    Well worth the price.

Exellent product for the price. I can now literally pop up my hood with one finger. Easy to install, fits great with total clerance between the struts and the body of the car. Really glad I pick this one up!

    Prop Rod - No Mas!!!!

This was a great bolt-on mod. It was easy to install, and puts the hood up just as high as the prop rod. The fit and finish of the parts was excellent and installed in about 20 mins. Plus I no longer feel like Fred Flintstone when I show off the Cobra motor!

    Convinent and good looking mod.

This product from Modular Muscle Design is great, it really helps when you need to open your hood. The hood struts are easy to install. They provide a great convenience when working on my car. Plus, who wants to see a prop rod at a car show?

Don't work with aftermarket fiberglass hood

I ordered the kit for my 96 but won't work with a aftermarket fiberglass Cobra R hood as the brackets don't sit flush not alowing the hood to close. I'm disappointed as now I have an item I can't use sitting on my shelf.

    Didn't fit

I really liked the fact it bolted on and I didn't have to drill anything. It just didn't fit with my steeda caster camber plates. the bracket would hit the end of the plate.

This product will not work with a Cervini Ram Air hood on a 1997 Mustang GT. It does seem to be quality but the only problem is it does not fit my application.
