Review & Install Video

Hey, I'm Justin with AmericanMuscle.com. And I'm checking out a can't miss retro mod for the front end of your 2010 through 2012 GT. Thanks to Modern Billets, upper and lower billet grilles available in your choice of either black or polished. As you might have guessed from the name, Modern Billet is a company that specializes in designing and producing a wide variety of styling and accessories for your Mustang using nothing but 100% aircraft grade billet aluminum. Now this upper grille draws its inspiration from the legendary 1966 Shelby GT 350. Now some people may argue that this car kicked off the billet grille trend that would later find its way onto everything from passenger cars to pickup trucks, is now more popular than ever on today's rides. In addition, that modern billet upper grille also deletes the signature GT fog lights and the factory running pony emblem, making for a real clean look when installed. The lower grille, which we are also featuring in this video, filled the void nicely on the lower portion of the factory bumper, and really makes for a dramatic look when paired with that upper grill. Now even though we do have the upper and lower grille paired up for this video, they are available separately. So for instance, if you just wanted to go with that retro-themed upper grille and leave the lower portion stock, you totally could. However if you dig the look of both grilles working together for you, like we have installed in our GT behind me, then you'll actually save yourself a few bucks in the process if you purchase both at the same time. As for the install, well, the method will differ slightly depending on which grille you're installing. For instance, the lower grille is an overlay, meaning it's designed to install easily over the lower portion of your factory grille. On the other hand, that upper grille will require a little bit more work simply because you have to remove the factory grille first and then install the new billet piece in reverse order. Now even though there is a little bit more work involved, you should be able to get each grille installed in about 30 minutes apiece, from start to finish. Now if you really want to nail that early Shelby look then you should put some of that money you saved from the combo deal towards one of these Tri-Bar pony emblems. Set it off to the side, and you'll have the same look Shelby used back in '65 and '66. So if you want to give your late model S197 a look shared by some of the early Shelby Mustangs, then be sure to check out some of these grille options from Modern Billet, available right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

Retro Upper Grille. Add an aggressive edge to your Mustang with a retro style grille that features 7 horizontal bars. This 7 bar Retro Upper Grille has a very unique design that deletes the factory fog lights. This Upper Grille is a replacement grille that requires removing your factory grille.

Matching Lower Grille. The optional 8 bar Lower Billet Grille is a perfect match to the Upper Grille to complete the appearance of your Mustang. The Lower Grille is an overlay that attaches over the factory lower grille.

Quality Construction. Designed with the original OEM CAD data from Ford to ensure a perfect fit, both the Upper and Lower Grilles are constructed from strong lightweight billet aluminum that is completed in a durable semi-gloss black powdercoated finish for an aggressive appearance and corrosion resistance.

Application. These Modern Billet Black Retro Billet Grilles are designed to fit the 2010-2012 GT Mustang. Does not fit the California Special Edition. The Upper and Lower Grilles are available separately or together as a Combo Kit. Please select from the ordering options above.

I,ve seen lots of people retain the factory gt fog lights with this. Does that require any modifications or just simply leave them mounted and the new grille sits in front of them?

My grille did not include those two long tabs on the bottom nor did it include the extra two acres and speed nuts. Have these been removed or something? The grill surround is very loose and floppy at the bottom .

My grille shipped with printed instructions that have a step to "use a Dremel to remove the pony outline from the factory grille". The instructions linked on the product page are missing that step. Which is true? Is that required? I want to minimize alterations to my factory hardware.

  • I apologize about that mix up. I would recommend giving us a call or sending us an email with a picture of those instructions and we may be able to get you some more clear instructions that should not include any modification.

Does the grille come with the grille surround?

  • Hi. The Modern Billet Black Retro Billet Grille only comes with the grille and the mounting hardware, it doesn't include the grille surround.

Can my fog lights go behind the grille?

KG

  • There is room to put fog lights behind this grille, however the Modern Billet Black Retro Billet Grille will eliminate any mounting points for the Fog lights. To make them work behind this grille you will have to make some modifications.

I just bought and installed this grille and it looks great but I noticed that some people have their fog lights behind the grille. Does anyone know how to do put the fog lights behind the grille or where to go for this?

Danielkg47

  • The Modern Billet Black Retro Billet Grille (10-12 GT) was not made for having the fog lights behind the grille, and neither do we sell one that does. If you were to do the modifications to achieve this look it seems like the biggest obstacle would be actually mounting the fog lights.

overall a decent grill for the pricee

Grill looks great and is a quality made product. The installation os the only problem. My screws like others were about half an inch short, were not even close. Once you get the right screws ots not bad, I suggest taking the screws out first then going to buy those exact screws a bit longer. Overall I am very happy with the product. Gives a mean look to the car with the upper one as well.

    Good bang for the buck

I debated between the Roush grille and the AM grille for a few months. I did thorough research and compared pros and cons of each and decided to try out the AM grille. The grille looked great out of the box without any damage. The paint on the grille is about a 9/10 with it being a little heavy in some places. No big deal for the price. The instructions (even though I didn't read them, the Roush grille instructions are the best) have been revised and are easy to follow. No problems with the hardware either. The grille does not move and fits pretty snugly. After reading a few bad reviews on various Mustang sites, I am glad I took a chance on this grille. So far I have been very pleased with how it turned out and I'm glad I was able to save $70. This thread convinced me to purchase this grille and it has some nice images of the grille during the install. http://forums.themustangsource.com/f802/roush-bumper-install-fog-delete-pic-heavy-496358/

    Get something else

Even for $150, one should expect much better quality than this. The metal tabs in back of the grill need to be aligned for the grill surround, but easy break off if you apply too much pressure. Save your money and the Roush.

The grille is made of very durable billet and shouldn't be breaking like that during installation. Give our customer service a ring. We can get you set up with a replacement shipment and a pre-paid return label for the defective grille.

I don't care what anyone says on these reviews this grill is worth 100 bucks it looks good, increases air flow, helps air to my intake and my heat exchanger, it's awesome! For 100 bucks I'd buy this grill every time. Install is easy took about 30 mins.

Review from Modern Billet Black Pony Delete Billet Grille - Lower (10-12 GT)

    Lower Grill

I bought this lower grill (black) to protect the supercharger radiator on my 2010 Mustang from stone damage. The grill is well made, it fits perfectly into the lower grill opening and it looks great. The method of installation, however, is atrocious. The grill attaches with two long screws that pass through holes in the grill and tread into J-hooks designed to hook onto the 'lips' of the side plastic walls inside the grill opening. I found it impossible to do this. There are two, cheap, spring clips (that will rust) that must be placed over the J-hooks for the long screws to thread into. This is hokey. The screws are not long enough to pass through the grill and start threading into the spring clips on the J-hooks and still catch the plastic edges. I had to duct-tape the J-hooks on the plastic lips and then try to start the screws. It still didn't work since the screws are just too short. I ended up attaching the J-hooks to the plastic edged on the upper side of the grill opening (closer to the front) but this is much less secure. Frankly, I do not trust the attachement screws not to vibrate lose while driving. I intend to remove the grill and modify the installation method. I will weld the J-hooks onto 316-SS threaded stock cut long enough to catch the plastic lip and protrude through the grill. I'll use small stainless Nylock nuts on the front of the grill to tighten the grill into the opening. American Muscle should really redesign the attachment method for this grill.

Review from Modern Billet Black Pony Delete Billet Grille - Lower (10-12 GT)

    This is my second lower

I bought the full set and loved it. Installation is a breeze with the Z hooks and screws and it looks fantastic. I get comments all the time about how great my new nose looks. However, I have a splitter style front fascia that rides low and forward, so I tend to scrape it a lot. After a particularly hard hit, I got about 60 miles down the road and the lower grille popped right out. So this time, I took extra precautions to keep it in place. Probably not a bad idea to keep an eye on it, even if you're not lowered.

    Top and bottom grilles on!

Top grill went in without much fan fair, those outside two clips on the grill are fun to get to. The mounting of the tri-bar stang was stright up, I just added a little epox. resin to the back to hold it straight up and down and not be moved by anything. Now the lower grille... I didn't realize the "J" hook was suppose to attach above the UPPER lip in that opening and I tryed in vain to attach to the side edges that slant toward the front of the car, I replaced the metal 3" long screws with Stainless Steel screws and painted black, I would have made the "J" hook wider and welded a nut on the backside and use a bolt instead of screw, that would have held it in place ALOT better in my humble opinion. But it looks NICE, the wife couldn't be happier!

    Upper/Lower Billet Grille

The grilles look fantastic when installed. As others have noted, the directions could be significantly improved and the installation is much easier if you have someone who can give you an extra hand. If you're installing both the upper and lower grilles, make sure you install the lower grille first, after you've removed the stock upper grille.

Upper and Lower Stacked Racing Grille combo

Overall quality of the grille is good. The hardware is adequate at best and the directions were terrible. Adding a few strips of 3M double-sided tape when attaching the finished grille to the front fascia makes a world of difference for keeping the uper grille in place, since you lose the 9 stock tabs on the underside of the original grille.

Retro look for a modern muscle car

The grille is the perfect look that I wanted for my 'stang. It's simple, sleek, dark, and a little classical. I considered buying the pony tri-bar to go with it, but nowadays I don't think anybody is wondering what kind of car we are driving when we pass them in their Camaro or Challenger. Easy Install in about 45 minutes.

    Finish look

This lower grill really gives the car a finish look. Very easy to install but wish the J hook screws were 1/4 inch longer. I must have fumbled with the J hooks 4 or 5 times and longer screws would have made that easy. I have a black stang it this really sets of the front end. Getting rid of the factory fog lights with the top grill and then the finish with the bottom. When possible I always but the combo kits that AM offers to save a few buck and I suggest that if you are thinking about changing the top grill that you get the combo and finish the look. I did not get the emblem for the front since I am taking off all items that would show it is a Mustang even the 5.0 off the front fenders. I will keep all those Camero guys guessing as I blow past them.

    Excellent Grille

This grille is the perfect upgrade. Fitment is great. The instructions on the site are much better than the ones included in the box but its pretty simple. Be gentle with the 2 tabs on each side by the headlights. I snapped 2 of them they are very easy to break. Other than that, excellent.
