    Review & Installation Video

    Review & Install Video

Hey, guys, Stephanie with here with an overview and install of the Ford BOSS 302 Alcantara Suede Steering Wheel, for the 2010 to 2014 Mustang. In this video, we're going to look at a few different things with this steering wheel, but mostly we'll be talking about the styling and construction of the wheel, talking about the install, and showing you guys what this looks like installed, so you can see the full effect. I'll talk more about the install later, but this is an easy install, so I'm gonna call it a one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter. The Ford BOSS 302 Steering Wheel is something that you're gonna want to check out if you're looking for a steering wheel upgrade that'll still keep the factory controls, with the factory airbag. And that has a factory-like feel, but that still gives you some upgraded looks and comfort over the factory steering wheel. This steering wheel is also a good option for someone that wants to capture some of that race-inspired feel that the 2012 BOSS 302 has, but that doesn't want to go all out with a true race wheel, or a setup that requires changing your hub and ditching that airbag. This steering wheel is original equipment on the BOSS 302. This isn't a replica wheel. This is the exact wheel that the BOSS comes from the factory with. Not only does that mean that it's gonna directly replace your factory steering wheel without the need for a different hub, but it means that you can keep the creature comforts of a factory steering wheel, and still have an upgrade in looks and feel. The sense that race-inspired design since the BOSS 302 is a factory car that's designed for the track. It is a contoured design, to give you a better grip, and that's different than the factory wheel. This gives you a bit more grip. The wheel is covered in this black Alcantara suede, and it's a very comfortable feel in your hand. The stock wheel is comfortable too, but the suede feels great, and I personally don't find it slippery at all. Styling aside, this steering wheel kit is a direct replacement for the factory steering wheel, and it's gonna come with the steering wheel as you see it here. It won't come with an airbag. You'll have to transfer over your airbag from your stock steering wheel. It's gonna come with bezels for your steering wheel controls, but the steering wheel does not come with a sync button, but that can be transferred over from your factory steering wheel. So, you do keep some items from your factory wheel, like your airbag, the sync button if you have it, and your hardware. If you have a 2010 to '12 Mustang, this wheel will fit any '10 to '12 that does not have a navigation system control on the factory steering wheel. Some GT500s have this feature, so just be aware of that. When it comes to price, you can expect to spend about $350 for this steering wheel. This is a touch more expensive than the other aftermarket options that are currently on this site, but this is made by Ford Performance, and it is an OEM part, so I'm not surprised by the price here. Those two factors usually tend to drive the price of parts up. And I don't think the price is crazy here for what you're getting between the quality and the comfort. As far as the install goes, I mentioned this earlier, but you're looking at a one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter, and you can expect to spend an hour, tops. You just need a few basic hand tools, nothing crazy or out of the ordinary. You're gonna want to disconnect your battery, first of all, then remove your airbag from your factory wheel by unbolting it, wiggling it out of place and unplugging the two connections. The steering wheel does come with detailed install instructions that'll walk you through this. You need to disconnect the cruise control before moving the steering wheel, which is only held in by a few bolts. Once the stock wheel is out, you're ready for the BOSS wheel. You can make your electrical connections, which are all plug and play, bolt the wheel down, reattach the airbag module, and finish up your install. Wrapping things up with the Ford BOSS 302 Alcantara Suede Steering Wheel, this is the OE steering wheel that came on the BOSS 302. It has a race-inspired feel with its design and Alcantara suede covering, extra bolstering, and stitching. As always, I suggest you check it out more online for yourself. And for all things Mustang, keep it right here at

Boss 302 Styling. Now you can have the look and feel of the mighty Boss 302 for your very own Pony with an original equipment Ford Boss Steering Wheel. This is the same exact steering wheel found in the limited edition 2012 Boss Mustang.

Get A Grip. This steering wheel features a uniquely contoured race inspired design for improved grip, that is perfect for the performance driving enthusiast. The wheel is completed in a soft alcantara suede with aluminum spokes that looks fantastic with any color interior.

Application. The Ford Motorcraft Boss 302 Style Steering Wheel fits all 2010-2014 Mustangs. Airbag not included. Not compatible with models that have navigational controls in the factory steering wheel.

    Technical Note.

    • This Ford Boss 302 style steering wheel re-uses the stock airbag.

I have the bare bones base model. Will this steering wheel be compatible as a replacement for the plastic/rubber basic steering wheel with only cruise controls? And the bigger question I have is, if I remove the basic wheel and install this, is the wiring in place for the wheel mounted radio controls?

    • The Ford BOSS 302 Alcantara Suede Steering Wheel does not have the "Sync" button, but it can be transferred over from your existing steering wheel and will fit any 10-12 Mustang that does not have a navigation system control in the factory steering wheel as some GT500's may have. The wiring should not be in place, and that would be something that would need to be acquired directly from Ford.

What kind of adapter would I need to purchase to make the radio controls work?

    • In order to have the radio controls function when swapping out the steering wheel, your dealer needs to update the Audio Control Module (ACM). I'd call around to your local dealers to get an idea of what each place would charge as I've heard some may charge high amounts, while some others may not. Hope this helps!

Easy to install and looks amazing!!!

I have spent a lot of time going back and forth between which steering wheel to get to replace my base model rubbermaid wheel. I finally went took the plunge and purchased this wheel. Right out of the box, you can see that the quality of this wheel is by far more Superior than the base and many other after market wheels out there. The grip is very comfortable and feels so right in your hands. The suede is so soft to touch and feels so wonderful. Changes the whole driving experience. The only drawback I find is that the plastic chrome sections get very hot in the South Florida sun, but it is not unbearable (not unlike the retro style satin shift knob I purchased... lol). The cruise controls work perfectly, but the audio control switches need to be wired up with a new radio harness (or so the Ford dealer tells me.) Over all, I am very happy with the wheel and the fact that the audio controls do not work, does not bother me. After all, I knew that would be the case before I spent the money. Don't hesitate. Buy this wheel NOW!

      Awesome Wheel

Terrific steering wheel. Great price from AM, fast shipping as usual, and just a great product overall. I had the el cheapo plastic base model steering wheel, and I tried to make it better with a leather wrap I stitched on myself. That was ok, but this is way better in my opinion than even a real leather wheel. The Alcantara doesn't get hot after sitting in the sun like the plastic or leather, and your hands never get sweaty or sticky holding onto it. Not to mention the awesome functional thumb grips. The wheel will bolt up very easily to any S197 'stang, but the connector for the cruise control/radio buttons is different than the receiver in 05-09's, so custom wiring will be needed to get those to work. I installed mine in an 05 and I have to say, even before I got the cruise control buttons to work, I loved the wheel. Its so good I wouldn't even have cared if the buttons never worked.

Rubbermaid out - Boss quality in

I have been building my car now with 12k into the engine and suspension now, and realized how some of the little differences effect your entire driving experience. Putting a Hurst shifter for example changed the entire driving experience of the car. What you actually touch is so important. I had just done long tubes, cams, and boss intake and was really happy with all of these...and when driving right after all those upgrades I noticed the grip on the OEM steering wheel had come loose underneath the rubber right at the 12 o'clock position. Must have happened during one of the Dynos. I continued to try and ignore this but it basically was ruining my driving experience. I kept looking at my Hurst shifter remembering how much that changed everything (from the floppy Honda Accord like shifting before). I went on American Muscle and looked at steering wheels. I wanted to still have an airbag and also keep the OEM look of my car. I chose the Boss steering wheel. So far everything that I have bought Boss or FRPP has been incredible and well thought through quality equipment. This steering wheel was no different. It goes well with the beige interior of the car. The feel feels incredible and even has some thumb grips the OEM wheel did not have. The 'spokes' of the wheel are also metal (not rubber), and make the interior of the car look much better and more quality. The new Mustang interiors are so much better now that I was amazed that they had used this OEM wheel. It's basically a rubbermaid piece of junk. I think the funnest part of this upgrade was literally throwing the rubbermaid wheel directly in the trash. I was almost embarrassed for my car that it came with this wheel. As far as the installation... I did it myself in less than 15 minutes and I never do my own installs I have the pro shop do everything. I downloaded the instructions and waited for the wheel to arrive ready to attempt my own install. I just had spent so much on my recent engine work that I wanted to save $100+ on an install. It was so much easier than I thought. I unhooked the battery and waited 20 minutes as the instructions said, and then it was so easy it took literally less than 10 minutes (I don't have the sync on my car). The cruise control works fine. The wheel also has more lights that light up (with the sync and cruise control) so it looks even better at night when making turns. I've had several compliments on it. I should have done this wheel and the Hurst shifter the first week I bought the car. American Muscle was awesome also - I called first to ask about the install and airbag etc...

      Like getting a new car.

I was surprised at how much of an aesthetic impact this steering wheel made. I upgraded from a stock v6 plastic loop, and it was like having an entirely new car. Grip is excellent, better than stock, and the looks are great. Cruise control buttons work right away, an adapter and some programming are needed for the stereo buttons.

      With track apps

Got the wheel and transferred the controls. Does not work with the track apps "premium package". Transferred the wiring harness from old wheel, 20min taking time. Boom. No problem. Love the wheel, kind of a learning curve from the cheap sticky original. Noticed it is a bit thinner and recommend it for those who enjoy the feel of driving. One more note, get a solid shift knob you will thank yourself.

This steering wheel is a great replacement for the stock base model wheel. The Alcantra feels and looks great in the car. The install was super easy and only took maybe 30 minutes at most. Only thing is that I wish the stereo controls worked right away. It appears that the car needs a flash from the dealer or something to get the controls working. I have not looked too far into it yet due to an upcoming trip. Great purchase and can't beat the price!!! Thanks AM

      Great Steering Wheel

I wish I had ordered this steering wheel sooner. Going from my stock base rubber steering wheel to this one has greatly improved my enjoyment while driving. If you have a base model rubber wheel that was disintegrating like mine this is miles away better and the install is very straight forward, the longest part is letting the car sit with the battery disconnected.

      Decent Wheel

I purchased the Boss 302 wheel hoping it would provide better grip than the stock steering wheel. I found the Alcantara wheel to be very slippery and it doesn't provide the grip of the stock unit. The fit and finish of the wheel are great and the wheel looks good in the car.

I bought this for my 2008 V6 Mustang because I found out it can be retrofit onto the earlier S197 models. (The wiring harness on the steering wheel is not compatible with the clock spring from the 2005-2009 so rewiring is needed for cruise buttons AND the 2005-2009 don't have audio steering controls so that has to be wired from scratch) The silver trim was yellowing on the edges really bad, and I tried painting it black with ColorBond paint (Advice: Don't use this, it's garbage on plastic parts) but started scratching off eventually on the edges, and it looked like gold specs, that is how bad the yellowing was. Anyhow, I wanted a sporty look but for this car I didn't want the red/gray accent of the Grant wheel. This is perfect. It blends perfectly with the silver trim interior of my 2008 (the aluminum colored vent / gauge trim) and looks a hundred times better than the 2008 wheel. The 2008 wheel seems more like a retro look to me like the old Mustangs, where as this BOSS steering wheel is like more like modern cars. It really gives the finishing touch to my interior. I will post picture later. AND the price! It's $200 less than the Grant wheel, and I have heard bad things about the quality of the grant wheel. This being by Ford Racing you can't go wrong. The alcantera material feels amazing too! Small note by the way, this is NOT suede leather. Alcantara is a cloth material, so you don't have to worry about it getting ruined by water or anything like that. There are many guides on how to clean it and restore it to softness if it gets hard.
