    Review & Install Video

I’m Justin with, and today I have with me 3 different brake pad options, all from Hawk Performance. We’re looking at the ceramic, the HPS, and the HP+, for both front and rear that will offer a broad range of performance that will suit everything from a bone stock daily driver, to an all out race course monster. Any one of these pads will far outperform your stock pads in just about every way, more braking performance, less fade and dust. However it’s very important you select the right pad for your application, so with that in mind, let’s break these 3 options down a little further. First up is the ceramic option from Hawk. These are going to be an ideal OE replacement and be perfectly suited for any daily driver, they’re going to bite strong without needing to be hot, be very quiet, and offer very minimal dust. This is all thanks to that ceramic compounds, which offers a nice balance between performance and everyday streetability. The next pad, the Hawk HPS will be right in the middle between the ceramics and the HP+ and will be for a daily driver or a weekend warrior, whose car does see a little track time and are just looking for a little bit more bite, and less fade. These pads utilize a therocarbon compound which does benefit from a little heat in order to perform their best but still offer great performance when cold. It is worth pointing out that these pads can be a little noisy when cold, and will definitely put off a little bit more dust than the ceramics, but all around, the HPS are a solid performer. Finally, we have the HP+. These are going to be for someone who subjects their Mustang to road courses and auto crossing where repetitive fade and high heat can kill lesser pads. Can you use these pads on the street? Yes, however, these pads feature a high temperature specific compound with a very high friction coefficient, which means these pads need to be hot and stay hot in order to perform at their best, like on a road course or an auto cross track. Once hot, these HP+ pads will bite hard, and offer great performance with very little fade, these pads tend to be very noisy and put off a good amount of dust, however since they’re geared more towards a race car versus a show car, most folks should be fine with that. Installing these pads from Hawk or any brake pads at that matter is a pretty simple task if you’ve never tackled brakes before. Due to the aggressive compounds of these pads, Hawk included a grease, to be used in conjunction with the included shim located on the back of the pad just to keep the noise level down. It’s very important that you use the grease on the back of the pad and not on the front of the pad, just so you don’t mess up your new brakes. Overall, getting the fronts and rears installed should only take you about 2 hours from start to finish. When it comes down to it, brake pads and tires are 2 of the biggest factors when it comes to helping your car stop faster. So try upgrading your Mustang to a quality pad like one of these Hawk options, and discover the difference in your braking performance.

Auto Cross. Hawk Performance's HP Plus brake pads were developed and manufactured especially for sport driving applications such as autocross, Solo II, and "track day" events.

Superior Braking. The HP Plus pads utilizes a unique Ferro-Carbon, high-tech friction material that has an extremely high friction coefficient making the pads "fade resistant" under repetitive, heavy braking conditions for excellent stopping power.

Application. This set of Hawk HP Plus Performance Brake Pads are specifically designed to be used on the front of the 1994 to 2004 SVT Cobra, 2001 Bullitt, and 2003-2004 Mach 1 Mustangs. Set includes driver-side and passenger-side brake pads.

            Insane braking power

Completely insane braking power... I shortened my braking points in marked brake zones by 100ft. Only the slightest perceptible fade, after many laps. Tons of dust, but if you're driving your car like you should be with these pads, brake dust is the least of your worries.

            Just installed

Nice product. Installed it today, along with new rotors, remanufactured calipers, DOT4 fluid and stainless steel lines. Brake pedal feel is great. Stopping power on the street seems the same. Going to a track day in 6 days and that should be fun with these brakes.

            Great Stopping Power

Replaced a new set of "top of the line" local auto part store brand pads with these. There is absolutely no comparison. I auto cross and drive spirited on the road, these take a little bit of heat to reach maximum stopping power, but once they do, they can make my R888's lock up. I also run a set of HAWK HPS pads for street use. Hawk pads are worth every penny I spend on them.

            Streetable track pad.

Excelent pads for track days/auto cross and still easy on rotors. This is all I use on the fox front and rear.

Open Track Day at Road America with Hawk HP Plus Brake Pads

I took my 01 Mustang Cobra to Road American for an open track day with Hawk HP Plus brake pads. They performed very well, no brake fade or loss of braking force throughout the track day. What really suprised me was how well the brakes lasted. I normally go through a full set of pad during an open track event like this. The Hawk HP held up well enough that I can probably get another track day out of the same set of pads.

            Hawk HP Plus

These pads are great. I use them for track days at Road Atlanta. They don't fade and I can get 3 or 4 track days out of them. They are great on the street as well but are very dusty. I usually change over to a ceramic pad on the street. I wish I could get the stopping power of these without the dust.

I have used Hawk HP Plus brake pads on my 1997 Mustang Cobra for about 10 years. During that time, I have tried a few other brands as well, plus some other types of Hawk Brake Pads. The Hawk HP Plus has great initial bite and does not fade too bad during long sessions on the road courses. Rotor wear is not too bad, but brake dust is a bit excessive, so keep your wheels clean! I usually take the wheels off after a weekend and wash them thoroughly on the inside as well as the outside. Brake noise is noticable, but my car is not an everyday driver. I run Brembo slotted rotors and stock Cobra calipers. With aggressive braking, I make up lost time on straights to cars with more power.

            Hawk HP Plus Brake Pads

These pads hold up to hard braking for sessions lasting about 20 minutes and are not too hard on rotors. Hawk has some more aggressive pads, but since the car is not a dedicated track car (yet), I have found the HP Plus is a good compromise for street and track.

            Great Pads for Racing

Bought these pads as a nice upgrade over the stock pads because I race in an autocross format. These pads are a lot more agressive and greatly increase braking power. A little more dust which is to be expected, but great pads!
