Review & Install Video

Hey, guys, Stephanie with AmericanMuscle.com here with the Modern Billet Retro Style 6-Speed Shift Knob for 2011 to 2014 GT and V6 Mustangs. The rally stripe shift knob is a nice shift knob for the MT82 equipped S197s that are looking for a nice round type of shift knob to make a statement with. This obviously isn't a plain shift knob and it's gonna stand out for sure in the interior. A lot of people take advantage of the individualism that a stock shift knob can bring to the interior of a car, and while minor, this shift knob is one of the connecting pieces between the car and the driver so it needs to be comfortable. Now this particular shift knob is black, with a running pony on both sides here that actually has the color of stripes. But there are a few slightly different styles of this particular shift knob. They're all gonna have the six-speed shift pattern, of course, and the running pony on both sides, but there's also a white and chrome version of this as well if this one doesn't suit your taste. While they're all styled differently, they're all inlaid engravings. And the engravings have been polished smooth, which is nice because then you don't have to worry about fading. So there are a ton of different types of material to choose from when you're looking for a shift knob, and material and finish are definitely something to consider because different types of materials have a different type of feel. And you also have to consider how the material will react to temperature changes like the heat of summertime or the cool of wintertime. This group of shift knobs are all made from a resin compound for strength and durability, and they're not as sensitive to heat or cold as other materials. The only outlier is the chrome option since that one is billet aluminum and not resin. The shift knobs also have a one and three-fourths diameter so they're a smaller shift knob. As far as price you can expect to spend right about $50 for one of these. The chrome option does cost a little bit more since it's not a resin compound but billet aluminum instead. There are a handful of different shift knob options that are available on the site if this one isn't doing it for you, and there are different colors, materials, and price points. So the install here is really pretty easy. The new knob will come with a retainer for the shift boot so you don't have to worry about that. If we want to get technical here, the shift knob is very easy to access. So you access your shift knob and remove it. The factory shift knob just comes off easily by using that normal righty, tighty, lefty, loosey rule. You'll want to install your retainer first, so thread that on there until it's touching the shift boot, and then it's just a matter of taking your shift knob and threading it down into place until it gets tight. Now it's probably not going to be sitting straight, so what I would do is turn it backwards about and eighth of a turn. Thread the retainer upwards and then turn the retainer end knob until they're tight. The retainer will act as a jam nut here so the knob won't move, but you can always Loctite it if you want to. Overall this is a one wrench install on our scale here and should take just about five minutes to complete. Wrapping things up here, the Modern Billet Retro Style Shift Knob is a classic cue ball style shift knob with a six-speed shift pattern for the MT82 equipped Mustang. There are a few different designs, they're made from a resin compound, and they're very easy to install. You can check these out more online along with all of the other shift knob options. And for all things Mustang, keep it right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

Does it simply unscrew for the 2011 GT/CS? HI! My GT/CS uses a different throw then the "regular" GT, does it simply unscrew as well or would I have to do some other modifications since it uses a different manual box. Thanks!

  • Yes just simply unscrew your old stock shift knob off and screw the new knob on, it's just like changing a light bulb.

Is this shift knob made out of metal or plastic?

Andrew

  • This Modern Billet Retro Style 6-Speed Shift Knob is made from a plastic resin compound. There is a metal sleeve inside the shift knob to accept the threaded shifter.

Mine came with the car and it came unscrewed the other day. When I screwed it back in, its upside down. How do I get it back right side up?

  • Hi, You'll want to turn the knob to the left until it's aligned the way you want it then do the same with the shift boot retainer until it's tight.

Does this have a high gloss finish or is it the same gloss/finish of an "8 ball" from pool?

My first thoughts of the knob when I opened the packaging was, this thing is small, but man does it look good. The product was packaged very well and was flawless. Installation took maybe 10 min. The ball fits perfectly in your hand. After taking the car for a spin around the block, this was a great upgrade. It feels like you have more control of your stick compared to the bulky factory knob. This item Looks sharp, feels great and is a must need for all 6spd mustangs. As always shipping was fast, my package actually arrived early so I was really happy about that.

Review from Modern Billet Retro Style 6-Speed Shift Knob w/ Tri-Bar Pony Logo - White (11-14 GT, V6)

Good knob, but after extensive use...

First off I want to say that I am using this knob on a Barton Short shifter in my '12 V6 and it fits flawlessly and doesn't sit too low (for me). I replaced my stock knob that broke (most likely from the force to shift into reverse, etc of the short shifter). It looks amazing for the first few months! I purchased this when it first came out. I'm now noticing that the paint in the emblem is starting to "gum" up and rub off. Also take into consideration I live in Tennessee and it's not uncommon to hit 100-110 degrees on a summer day, so that may have something to do with it. But from the use I've gotten out of it. It was worth 50 bucks to me!

    Could be heavier.

Looks great. Takes less than 5 minutes to install. Wish it had a little but more weight to it. Other than that it's a great shifter knob, feels great it your hand driving down the road.

    Great product!....

This is a great looking addition to your interior but be careful not to have dry hands! Mine has scratched quite a bit(guess I have rough hands,,,,) Overall a nice touch and have received lots of compliments, Feels much better than the stock knob and coupled with the Barton two-piece bracket makes a stock shifter feel like an expensive aftermarket one! Install was a breeze - 3 minutes at best! Perhaps the satin finished one wouldn't scratch as easily...................?

    Love it!

Feels way better in my hand then the stock shift knob ever did. Piece of cake to install too, like 5 minutes is all. Really dressed up the interior as well. My Mustang is a 14 GT/CS, so it fits package 402a perfectly.

    Great looking knob, but small.

The fit and finish of this shift knob is excellent. Install is simple and can be done in about 5 minutes by simply unscrewing the old knob, and screwing on the new one. The one downside is that the knob is smaller than I expected ... even my wife thought it was small. If you like smaller shift knobs, or have small hands, this is a great knob. But if you have large hands, or are looking for a beefier sized shift knob, you might want to look elsewhere.

    Having a Ball

Bought this shift nob after my friend talked me out of getting satin finish without the logo on the side. I am glad that he did. This thing looks gorgeous and feels just right. Everyone that has seen it has said the same. Would recommend this product to anyone.

    Great, matches my black Mustang

Looks great, especially since my car is black on black. Of course it was very easy to install. At first I was a bit disappointed that it wasn't made out of some sort of metal. However, I have changed my mind because the resin compound stays relatively cool in the heat. Watch out for the boot retainer/adapter though! If your Mustang sat outside all day in the sun that piece of metal will be hot as a frying pan, while the knob itself is relatively cool. This product goes a long way to change the appearance of the interior.

    Make shifting great again

It's a little smaller than I imagined, maybe slightly larger than a golf ball. However, it looks great and (more importantly) feels great when going through the gears. Shifting feels much smoother, especially from 1st to 2nd gear. It's a major improvement over the bulky factory shift knob. Took about 20 minutes to align/center it perfectly..but maybe I'm just a perfectionist. Overall, I recommend this to everyone as a cheap but worthwhile mod.

    Great shifter

Like the other reviews say, it's small. It's noticeably smaller and lighter than the factory shifter, but that's exactly what I like about it. The factory shift knob was fairly bulky to me, it was hard to get a good grip on it. This shift knob feels nice in your hand and is easy to grab for banging through gears. It's definitely overpriced, but honestly I'm still glad I spent $50 on it because I really like it.

    A more enjoyable ride

This knob is so much more comfortable than stock. Installation was quick with good grip gloves. Other sites have slightly larger ones ( 2.12 inches) I think but for me this size is perfect. Much more expensive for a Canadian like me but I don't regret it!

    Simply great!

It had all the parts, took 2 minutes to screw off the old one and put on the new. Works and looks great! Fits my hand better since it's a tad smaller than the factory silver shift knob. Handles the weather perfectly than a metal one.

Fits your hand tighter then the bulky stock shifter knob it don't feel as loose either You defiantly feel more of the cars power when shifting with this shift knob I love it! Thanks AM!
