Prop Rod? Are you still using the outdated factory prop rod Ford installed in your 2010-2014 Mustang? Eliminate that inconvenient and ugly prop rod and upgrade to a modern set of MMD Bolt-On Hood Struts from AmericanMuscle for a clean look and unrestricted view of your Pony's engine.

Style And Strength. Designed to get rid of that old ugly prop rod, this set of two powerful yet sleek MMD gas struts not only makes opening your Pony's hood much easier, but also holds it securely in place. Made from lightweight steel and aluminum, they have a black powercoated finish to give your engine bay a much cleaner appearance.

No Drilling Required. The stamped steel brackets included in this MMD kit are designed to bolt into the existing mounting holes in the hood so there is no drilling required for installation. Struts can be installed on factory hoods as well as aftermarket hoods that use the factory bolt location. If your aftermarket hood is lighter than the factory hood, use caution when opening the hood due to the power of the strut.

Installation. Taking approximately one hour to install, this kit includes two black gas powered struts, mounting brackets, and all the required mounting hardware.

Application. This Modern Muscle Design Hood Strut Kit is specifically designed for use on the 2010 to 2014 Ford Mustangs, including the V6, GT, BOSS and Shelby GT500 models.

Mounting require hood removal? With bolt on install, can you leave hood in place with prop rod & install one side at a time or is this a 2 man job with hood removal? Thanx

Pete13

  • You can do it by yourself, I did, however it would be easier if you had another set of hands. just follow the instructions and do not fully remove the bolts holding the hood, remove the front bolt and then loosen the back bolt. You will have to push the hood away from the factory bracket to get the hood strut bracket sandwiched in between, then tighten the bolt and then then reinstall the front bolt. The one thing that happened on both sides is the bolts on the fender appeared to strip as they could not be tightened fully but they do hold and I have not had a problem with them. Good luck and one of the better mods I made as no prop rod to get in the way.

Strength? Are these strong enough to hold up a fiberglass hood? My hood is heavy and the Drake struts are not able to hold..

Are there replacement struts? After just a couple of years they struts that came with this kit will no longer hold up my hood. Are the struts Vehicle specific?

Jtro

  • Unfortunately there is no warranty on these hood struts so the only way to get a replacement would be to buy another pair, although it never hurts to call in and speak with a customer service representative to see if there is anything they can do. And yes, these struts are specifically designed for 05-14 Mustangs.

I have a Steeda strut mount brace installed on my 2010 GT500. Is there any clearance issues installing these or are the strut mounts further back on the hood and not an issue. Strut mount brace goes straight across between the two struts.

  • These hood struts will fit on your car no problem with the strut tower brace installed.

Is one type of strut better then the others? I've had the struts on my 2014 Mustang for 2-years and they will no longer hold the hood up so I'm back to using the rod.

  • We typically see a longer service life on hood struts than two years, however this can vary based on climate, how many times they are opened/closed and how often/how long they are left open. We typically will see a longer service life with they Redline Tuning hood struts, though the difference is minimal.

I have these struts on my 07 gt and want to put them on my 14 gt i just bought. It looks like the same part number. Will the pair on my 07 fit with just relocating the sound canister to below the fender lip?

  • These MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit fit on all 2005-2014 models. To install these on a 2010-2014, the installation process is a little different and you will need to do some relocated around the fender. I have attached a link to the installation guide for specific details. https://www.americanmuscle.com/chrome-hoodstrut-1012-cust-install.html

    Hood Strut Installation Modification

This is a great product and easy to install but it takes two people to finally pop on the struts, one to hold the hood at the proper hight so the strut will allign with the ball sockets and one to pop the strut onto the ball socket. After I closed the hood and re-opened it to look at my handywork, I noticed that the lower bracket had rotated around the bolt, even so the torque on the bolt was correct. Looking at the dynamics of the whole thing, I decided that the two lower brackets would be prevented from rotating if they were reversed, that is, the D/L marked bracket goes on the passenger side and the P/L marked bracket goes on the drivers side. This switch then places the long side of the bracket in the correct place to prevent rotation while maintaining the same position of the lower bracket ball socket. I have submitted a picture of this modified installation.

Review from MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit - Black (05-14 All)

    Bolt-on hood strut kit

Fairly easy to install; however be careful when popping the strut ends onto the fittings. I had problems with the metal clips inside the strut ends wanting to slide to the side when pushed onto the fittings. I finally put some lithium grease on either end of the fittings to make the installation easier. Once installed, these struts work great; the hood opens a good 6 inches farther than with the prop rod and really completed the look under the hood. I never understood why Ford didn't put these on from the factory (on a $55,000 car) since they put them on the trunk.

    extra work for 2010+ owners

nice product, works as advertised, BUT, 2010+ owners will be changing the location of the sound tube for clearance, not the worst job but be prepared for this extra step. still worth the extra steps to rid yourself of the prop rod. just follow enclosed instructions.

Review from MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit - Black (05-14 All)

Very clean look and easy installation

These are very easy to install, though the pictures in the instructions could be larger. I found that it was easier to loosen the bolt to the hood at the back far enough to slip the upper mount in before removing the forward bolt, this helped to hold the hood in place and make the process easier. Also, don't leave the wiper washer line in place, it must be moved or it will be crushed by the passenger side bracket. Very clean install, I highly recommend these.

Review from MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit - Black (05-14 All)

    Be careful

One thing I have learned from years of assembling items that come with directions is to "follow the directions". I tried to install these struts and the spring clips in the ends of the struts snapped in two and were unusable. I was sent a second kit after contacting American Muscle and made a second attempt at installation. After running into the same problem and calling AM for help I was told the clips were to be removed before installation. The instructions made no note of this. Now maybe I should have been aware the clips had to be removed first but it would have been so easy had the instructions stated as much. Since AM does not have the clips in stock I was advised to try a local hardware store or they would send me an entire kit to take the clips from and return the balance of the kit. AM has been terrific and the struts are excellent based on other installations I have seen but the instructions should have that one additional piece of information.

    Bolt-on Hood Strut Kit

The kit as received from American Muscle was complete and extremely easy to install. To effectively support the weight of the hood from a point so close to the hinge point of the hood requires precise calibration of the force delivered by the gas shocks. The balance of the shocks was perfect. Take it from an engineer, they have it calculated perfectly....

Review from MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit - Black (05-14 All)

    Much improved.

From reading all the comments, I was a little hesitant in ordering this item. But much to my surprise, I was very please with the install and packaging. The packaging is very solid with cutout foam to hold everything together so there are no dings while traveling in the mail. Instructions were very easy to follow. Install only took about 20 minutes. I didn't even need to realign my hood. It closed and fit like a glove. The only complaint I have (the reason for only 4 stars) is that the passenger side upper bracket covers to holes where the windshield washer hose goes. I had to improvise with zip ties... *grumble*. Also touch up paint is recommended for the bolt heads, as they will get ground up a bit.

    RTRFI -- Twice

Great item. Easy to install, but be sure to locate the correct mounting bolt (first one from the cowl). The strut is a bit difficult to connect onto the retaining ball. Looks great and works great and provides more room under the hood (opens higher).

Review from MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit - Black (05-14 All)

    Nice upgrade

Took about 30 mins to install with just a 10mm socket. Helped to have a second pair of hands to lift the hood to the required height when fitting the second gas strut, but you can do it yourself. Installation is simple and the hood, loosened on one side only at a time, is easy to keep in the original position. As noted by another reviewer, the gas strut pushing on the lower bracket on the passenger side puts a counterclockwise torque into the single bolt on the fender, essentially loosening it and allowing the bracket to rotate until it touches the fender; doesn't look right when twisted. The other reviewer swapped the brackets left to right and right to left. I simply put a shim (a washer!) behind the bracket as support at the rear end to maintain the straightness of the bracket and avoid rotation and subsequent loosening of the bolt. The driver side is fine since the bracket tries to rotate clockwise, tightening the bolt, so nothing moves anyway. Gas strut force is good, though the available assist force throughout the travel from closed to fully open is not quite to OEM design standards. The struts will only start to fully support the hood at about the 3/4 travel point. Below that, there is some assistance, but the hood will close. As fully open is approached, the strut will sound "squishy" as the fluid is presumably forced through an orifice. The hood opening is more than with the prop rod - much better showing of the engine bay and improved access/daylight to work on the engine. Got this accessory when it was on sale and at a more appealing price IMHO for what it is and I'm very happy with it. The black finish complements my black and white convertible

    Easy to install...

These were very easy to install once I figured out that they just don't "pop" on. What they left out of instructions that is with the product is that it's easier to get the struts to "pop" on if you use a small screwdriver to pull the clip out just a little as you're pushing the strut onto the bracket. Once I figured that out, yes, it was easy.

    Bolt On Hood Struts

I have these on my 2006 GT and my 2011 Roush, look great on both. Installation is easy and can be done by one person, did my second set in about 15 minutes. They begin to lift on their own after lifting the hood about halfway, and keep the hood open higher than the prop rod. I have left my hood open for 8 hours at a car show with no problems with them holding up. Really gives your engine bay a clean look, and it's nice not to have the prop rod in the way.

    NICE

Just dropped these into my 2011 GT/CS without any issues. THe instructions were spot-on and easy, including the need to move the sound tube. On teh passenger's side I had to re-rout a wire to teh hood, so I drilled two small holes into the upper bracket for the wiring harness clips I had to take out of the hood. Looks factory and holds the hood higher. A must-have.

mmd bolt on Hood strut kit

I originally bought two kits a bout a year ago. Took a little time to get it installed due to cold weather outside. Had no experience with this as it was my first time. Put the kit on and had issues the struts being way to stout .Actually slightly bent my hood which I had repaired at an Ogden Utah paint shop. They couldn't get this first kit to work so it was removed. I recently received a replacement kit from American Muscle and also had the second kit. Between the two I have found some struts that are far less strong and appear to be doing the job. I just happened to get a kit that was terribly defective in the first place. As true to their adds: American Muscle stands behind their products even better than their vendors do. Sorry ,I feel this is the most important part because customer service is what keeps the customers coming back and has with myself . Would I recommend this product! Sure would, but I would see if I could compress the struts first. If you can't compress the struts by pushing them against a solid object, I'd send it back for one that would.

    No More Prop Rod

These hood struts are a great, simple, and an affordable alternative to the prop rod that came standard on all mustangs. These hood struts honestly should have come standard from the factory on all mustangs. They are very durable, lightweight, and the brackets are made of thick metal, I have no doubt that they will last for years to come. Shipping was painless and quick, arrived in 3 business days. Installation was simple, taking only about 15min. The hood actually opens about 5in wider now. I recommend this Product!
