Review & Install Video

Hey guys, Stephanie with AmericanMuscle.com, and this is my review of the MMD by Foose Rear Valance Diffuser for 2005 to 2009 GT Mustangs. The MMD by Foose Rear Diffuser is going to be for those older S197 GT owners out there that are looking to change up the looks of the rear of the car but without having to cut away at the rear bumper or go to extreme with things. The MMD by Foose Rear Valance is designed to look like it could be a factory part but it still enhances the looks of the car at the same time. There isn't a whole lot out there right now that doesn't require some drilling or cutting. So first of all, this is an MMD by Foose part so it's actually designed by Chip Foose himself just like the other MMD by Foose items are. With that being said, this rear diffuser takes after the other MMD by Foose parts in the sense that once it's installed, it really just looks like it belongs. The S197 kind of has a plain rear end. I call it a little shapeless and the diffuser just gives the car a sharper look but it's not over the top or too crazy in my opinion. This is the only diffuser that's currently available that works with the stock bumper. There are some other options on the site but they do require replacing your whole bumper cover or a good amount of cutting or drilling. So this is really the only option that works with the stock bumper and just simply adds on. But that also means that if you get tired of it, you can always just pull it off and go back to stock and not have to worry about it. This is made from an ABS plastic which not only makes it look like an OEM part, but it's also intended to offer more durability and a longer lifespan than other materials which is good news for your daily drivers. It does have a factory style grainy texture that you can see right here, and if we flip if over, you'll see that there is 3M tape already pre-installed on the back to help make for an easier install, and there's also some support tabs. And when we do the install we'll show you more about those. From looking at it here and knowing about the construction, specifically that it's an ABS material, my overall impressions of this are that it's exactly what I expected. It is thin plastic at the end of the day, but it does seem like it's going to hold up against the weather and time on the road. Another thing that I like is that it does come with an alcohol prep pad to help get the surface as clean as possible and some adhesion promoter too. So you'll have everything that you need for the install when it comes time. When it comes to the price, this diffuser is going to run you right around the $250 mark. This is less expensive than the other alternatives that are out there, but this is really the only diffuser like I mentioned earlier. The nice thing about this is that it will match any car, it doesn't need to be painted, and it's ready to be installed right out of the box. When it comes to the install, luckily it's pretty straight forward. Like I said before, you don't need to do any drilling or cutting here. You only need one socket to mount the lower tab so you won't need a bunch of tools. So this install's really nothing complicated at all. The balance comes with the alcohol prep pads and the adhesion promoter and the 3M tape is already on the places that it needs to be. The only other thing that you might need is if you want to add some more 3M tape just to be safe, but it's not required. The first thing that you're going to want to do is make sure that the bumper where you're going to be installing the diffuser is as clean as possible. So that's what you use the alcohol prep pads for. After that, you'll put your support tabs on. And they are side-specific, so just note the orientation of them. Next, you'll put the adhesion promoter on, and you'll want the adhesion promoter anywhere that the diffuser tape makes contact with the bumper. But just as a side note, be careful with the adhesion promoter because it will leave a visible residue if you get it anywhere else other than your tape bonding area. After that, you're ready to get this thing on the car, and you want to start by pressing from the center of the bumper outwards. The last step will be mounting the lower tab and pressing the tabs against the diffuser for support. After all, you're probably looking at an hour or two tops and a one out of three wrenches on the scale. All right, so wrapping things up, the MMD by Foose Rear Valance Diffuser is a subtle way to make things a little different from your 'Stang. It doesn't require any cutting our drilling. It's made from a black ABS plastic so it fits in with a factory-like look. So if this is something that you like the looks of, feel free to check it out more online for yourself. I'm Stephanie, and for all things Mustang, keep it right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

I'm wanting this piece to finish off the look of my v6. It says that it would fit 05-09 v6 mustangs with dual exhaust which is what I have but I don't have a GT bumper so with that being said, would this piece still fit and would it set flush against my bumper.

  • I have a v6 mustang that has the stock bumper. I added the dual exhaust a couple of years ago and was glad to see this product come out. I know the difference between the v6 bumper and GT bumper so I knew it was not going to be an exact fit. Everything fits get with exception of both bottom ends 1/2 gap due to the flare on the bottom of the GT bumpers. I had to splice a couple of line around the area of the exhaust tip so I could melt and form the plastic to the bottom of the v6 bumper. Check picture of the yellow stang.

Does anyone have experience painting this part? If I wanted to make it gloss black, would I need to lay down a coat of black or could I just clear coat the plastic itself?

Tom

  • I painted my diffuser glossy black. Used primer first to make sure the glossy would stick. Then painted with engine paint due to heat from exhaust tips. Check out the pic that is the yellow stand.

Planning needed for V6 with dual exhaust

Love all the product I have bought from AM! I bought this product 3 months ago and thought and planned how this would work on a stock V6 bumper with dual exhaust (NOT GT BUMPER!!) This will not work on a stock v6 bumper without dong major modification! I had to cut a slice out of both sides to melt and mold the bottom ends to make it touch the side of the bumper and close the gap on side. (See picture) This took me 2 days to mold and paint the bumper to work on this. I do like how it looks and would buy the product again. But you have to be ready to modify if you plan on putting this on a V6 dual exhaust.

    nice

I really like the look of it, but the fit doesn't make it perfect out of the box. With the right amount of prep, it goes on easily enough, but I wasn't crazy about the gap. I love it now that I ran a small bead of silicon along the seam between car and diffuser.

    Poor fir

This being a Foose product I figured the fit would be excellent it was not. There was a 3mm gap on the left side and it did not matter what I did to correct also if it so important to but the mounting brackets on the correct side they should have part marking. For the money somewhat of a disappointment.

    A Visual Change That Works

The rear deck-lid and bumper on light colored GT models really looks fat and dumpy to my eye. The Foose valance with its black textured finish lends a change to the overall shape, covers up a lot of body color, and reduces the visual mass that bugs me. Some reviewers have had complaints about the fit but I'm satisfied with it. Overall I prefer the appearance of the Foose item over the GT/CS style bumper cover and this is way less expensive when you figure in the painting cost needed to fit the "factory" style part. Installation took less than two hours but I did need to run to the paint shop to get adhesion promoter which was supposed to be included but was absent. I'd give this product 5 stars but for the price. $250 just seems about $75 high considering it's only a piece of plastic.

    Poor Fit

Standing way back from my Stang the diffuser is a nice addition but standing closer there is a clear gap on both sides of the license plate because the diffuser does not sit flush. I don't see any easy way to fix this problem so I may just have it removed.

    Diffuser Does Not Fit Well

So far all of the mods from AM have fit well and have looked professional. I installed my rear valance diffuser yesterday and it ended up looking like several other reviews posted here. It does not fit well at all. There is a significant gap between the diffuser and the bumper so it has a very "amateur" appearance. I am in the process of trying to resolve this issue some way. I believe Foose and MMD need to make some improvements to this item.

Good look but fit to improve

I really like the look which provide some contrast on a rather plain rear bumper of my sreaming yellow Mustang. However the fit was far from perfect. Even if I was very, very careful during the installation I ended with small gaps (2-3 mm) between the bumper and the diffuser in the areas just over the tip of the mufflers. I solve the problem by adding some foam filler to serve as backup to small black silicone finishing beads. The final result is very good but I had to work a lot to compensate the poor fit. So 5 stars for the appearance but only 2 for the fit !

    Looks tough !

Not overly impressed, it really brings the back together, but I couldn't get it to fit tight no matter what I tried, for $249 bucks it should fit like it's factory. The tape stuck very well, but stretched, allowing it to not stay tight. I finally got some black screws and tastefully positioned them, to pull it tight.

    Great looking add on

Great looking add-on to my V6 dual exhaust bumper. Knowing the GT bumper is different than the V6 this made it a little more challenging. You have to do some cutting on the bottom and molding / melting of the bottom area to avoid a 1/2 gap due to the bumper size. After I also painted it glossy black to match my strips. Great fit everywhere else. Check out the yellow stang in the picture section. Alway love AM Parts

    Diffuser Upgrade

The Install was easy enough for one person to do it. Just remember when you are sticking on those L-Brackets onto the diffuser, leave them sticking out a bit so that the tape can stick on to the bumper. I can't believe how light this diffuser is, I'm not too worried about it adding weight to the car! It was a bit pricey but it's worth it. Thanks Chip Foose, and thanks American Muscle for making this mod possible!!

    SLIGHT IMPROVEMENT OVER STOCK

I always liked how the newer mustangs had the black diffuser/valance in the back and really gave the car a more complete, sharp, meaner look. I was trying to emulate that with this. This piece adds a touch of that to the S197 big, shapeless bottom, but only a touch; it doesn't fit as snug as it should to look factory and there are some gaps between it and the bumper. Again, it does give a little more style and completes that otherwise plain rear-end, but it could've been made to fit tighter.

    Mustang loaded with AM mods

Great product, looks good. I was a little concerned about the fit after reading one of the previous reviews. I had planned on installing a little different than the instructions and looking back I wish I had. The two L-brackets with tape are instructed to be attached to the diffuser first. It might be better to align the diffuser on the car, use some masking tape to indicate the top of the diffuser on the bumper and attach the two top L-brackets to the bumper first. I mounted them to the diffuser and I could not get the tape to hold to the bumper. Thus I have a gap along the top on both sides. I'm thinking I might have to drill two holes and use a black plastic fastner to pull the diffuser tighter against the bumper. You have to be very careful to orient those L-brackets correctly. The two screws used beneath the car are just barely long enough to get thru the lower bracket and reattach to the car. I wanted to use a washer but could not. Good luck

    Foose rear diffuser

I bought this product in hopes that it would look good on my Mustang that I was restyling for the second time. I would like to preface this with that fact I have many cars that I've modded myself. I was almost done with the Mustang and I wanted one more piece to finish the exterior. This piece from Foose looked like what I needed. So I bought it, tried to install it and found out the piece doesn't fit properly. It's basically peel and stick, except that it doesn't fit all the contours of the rear facia properly, so that so you have a large gap at the top side edges. The product wanted to peel away from the car, leaving stretched tape exposed at the top, ready to peel off and release itself from my car. It didn't look good. My car is definitely show quality and needless to say the product was taken back off my car with "great" disappointment. The Foose name led me to believe this would fit perfect, it doesn't.

    Looks good, rough install

I bought this knowing others had problems with fitting. I also experienced this. I had to purchase more tape and some emblem glue to get the gaps where they should be. I then needed to run a thin bead of black silicone to some of the spots. Another problem I ran into that I didn't read others having , were my bolts to attach the braces to the rear of the car weren't long enough to go through the bases and start the threads. Thus another trip to town to purchase longer bolts. Looks good after you get it on, but wasn't a easy chore for me. But looks great.

Valance is a good product, looks great

The Valance installed easily , fits well but not perfect. Placement of the tabs that have the tape is critical. I had it as perfect as I could, and yet the thickness of the tape stands it off enough to form an annoying crack. I solved it by squeezing in some black silicon grout and it looks decent now. All in all it looks great on the car, the rear bumper on these models is a bit on the large side in my opinion.
