Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey, guys. Adam here with americanmuscle.com. Today, I'm bringing you a quick overview and installation of the MMD Tail Light Trim in a matte black finish available for all 2015 and newer Mustangs, excluding the 50th anniversary edition models. So in this video, of course, we'll be going over the styling and appearance you can expect when adding this tail light trim from MMD. I'll even touch on the materials and construction. I'll top the video off with the install, which I'll let you know upfront, gets a very easy, one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter, simply because this will install using 3M automotive bonding tape. The MMD Tail Light Trim you see here will be for any 2015 or newer Mustang owner who's looking to add a little bit more detail to the rear end of their S550, more specifically, those tri-bar iconic tail lights. And in this case, you're adding a tail light trim that comes in a sleek matte black finish. So I'm sure, most of us can agree that the S550 tail lights is probably one of the most aggressive takes on that tri-bar design, dating all the way back the mid-'60s. Now with that said, some people out there who own the S550 might think that it could use a little bit more detail, just to spice up that appearance. If that's the case, you might be looking into any trim or bezels in the aftermarket world, just to surround that 3D design a little bit more. Now, in this case, in my personal opinion, the matte black finish that MMD has on this particular tail light trim would actually top off that rear-end and give it that little bit of detail that it kind of needs just to make it pop a little bit more. As far as the materials and construction goes, this is pretty straightforward, especially when it comes to these aftermarket trims. You can expect a high quality ABS plastic, something extremely lightweight, extremely durable, something that is somewhat flexible but can take a beating. It's also UV protected, so it's great for the guys out there attending a lot of car shows, using this as a daily driver, something that's parked on the street a lot, is exposed to a lot of sunlight. This thing isn't gonna fade, it's not gonna crack over time. And, you know, MMD is actually pretty known for making quality parts like this for your exterior, so I'm not surprised with this particular construction here. As far as the price goes, if you're interested in picking up the tail light trim from MMD you see here, you can expect to be spending about 150 bucks. Now, in my personal opinion, after holding this, I don't think it's a very bad price at all, especially for the guys out there attending a lot of shows, or even if you're trying to complete an all-out blackout look for your exterior. Now, if you're to get the black paint, the black interior, the black wheels, all you need to do is top off that rear-end to give the tail lights a little bit more black since obviously, they're coming in a red color. Now with that said, 150 bucks and it's yours. My personal opinion, not a bad price at all. And I think with the matte black look, it really adds the detail that the rear-end needs. Now, I'm gonna shift gears over to the install portion of the video. If you're interested in getting this installed on your S550, I want you to know, it installs extremely easily with 3M automotive bonding tape that is provided for you in the kit. Now, 3M automotive bonding tape is a very, very solid adhesive bonding here, so this is something that isn't gonna fall off over time. It'll stay on as long as you want it to, and it's easily removable if you wanna take it off. Now with that said, you're not gonna need any hand tools, any special hand tools at that. The only thing you'll need are the alcohol wipes provided in the kit, just to clean off the area to get a good bonding. Now with that said, you'll be using the alcohol wipes to clean off your factory tail lights, of course, the area all around the tail lights that you'll be applying this to. Once you have that taken care of, you'll use the 3M automotive bonding roll that's included in the kit, you'll cut off little strips, and you'll see on the back here, there are separate spaces here, just to show you exactly where the 3M tape will go. Once you have that stuck in the back of the trim, peel off the backing on that tape, and stick it right into place. Repeat that process for the opposite side, and you're good to go. Overall, I'll say, about 15 to 20 minutes on the install, and a one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter. Now, just to wrap up this overview and install, guys, if you're the owner of a 2015 or newer S550 Mustang, excluding the 50th anniversary edition, you might be looking to get a little bit more detail for your rear-end of your S550, including those tail lights. So if you are, you might wanna check out the MMD Tail Light Trim in the matte black finish, which of course is available right here at americanmuscle.com.

Ask a Question

Hi, I have some questions about this product: - Is it needed to have any kind of complex cuts in the car Bumper or just holes? - I have the roush rounded tip exhaust in my car which are a little bit larger than the factory ones, does the product fits the same? - I saw some comments about some part of the difuser that needs to be "glued" with 3M but in some cases it came out again with the exhaust heat, is that common or is just a kind of intallation mistake? (I live in Dubai where the heat sometimes is extreme) - Do i need to take all the bumper out or just a simple car lift is enought to install the product? Thanks for your kind attention.

Marcio

  • The MMD by FOOSE Rear Valance Diffuser (13-14 GT, V6) does not require any extra cutting or modifications in general, as long as you have the factory bumper installed, the product should retain the same bolt holes as what is already currently attached to the vehicle. The valance itself also can easily fit up to 4.5 inch tips, and even bigger if you get a little creative. As far as the 3M tape, if applied correctly, it will be almost as strong as concrete. However, considering the method of installation involves heating up the glue of the tape to make it malleable, it wouldn't be a bad idea to think of another modification or two, to compensate for the considerable heat of Dubai, just to make sure the valance stays snugly attached. Lastly, while installation may be a little easier with a lift or a jack, it is by no means necessary; you would have zero problems keeping those back wheels on the ground during installation. On top of this, the bumper most certainly can stay attached.

    Great but

Very mean and aggressive! Installation didn't take more than 30 minutes with the drilling. One cone about this rear valance is that the support taps does not fit that well. Other than that go for it straight forward and no cutting.

    Great quality diffuser!

Took about 20 minutes to install with the correct tools and has great fitment. Completely transformed the look of the rear end and still keeps a subtle factory look. Not as involved as the other diffusers out there and looks as good if not better than most others.

    Looks great

Besides my fat fingers messing up centering the panel, this was a great addition to give me the look I was going for. Simple install that took a matter of minutes.

Love the look, could be better

Overall, this product is really nice. Compared to the Boss 302 valance diffuser (my friend has this installed), it stands out a little further and is a lot more noticeable from the side view giving it a more aggressive stance. As far as looks are concerned, completely love this thing. But there is the bad. While it is easy to install (maybe 20 minutes top), the construction of the valance could have been better. As mentioned by another customer, the support tabs are terrible. They sit over the exhaust tips and mine had not only came unattached, but the adhesive applied to them were poorly done, so once I installed completely, they are fairly noticeable (black mustang, black support tab, white 3m tape). Even after going back to add some more adhesive (in hopes that it would), it did not. I just wish the support tabs would have already came assembled with the Valance, and that there was a way to keep the valance on more securely. Maybe on an off day I'll see about trying to modify it to have the support tabs stay attached to the bumper. Other than that, I love it, and it does transform the ride's rear end. I would recommend, with caution on installation.

    improved style

Makes the rear look a million times better! I have the pypes axle back, which use to stick out too much so this diffuser improved on the overall look. Fit is good but not perfect. The hardest part of the install was figuring out how to place the supporting tabs and then lining it up straight. It seems the left tab fit differently than the right. Once on, if you look close enough you can see some of the 3M tape on one side. I wish they designed a better way to install the tabs or even better made it all one piece. Then I would rate this diffuser 10 stars! Like one review said, you have one shot at it. It's a nice looking piece, material looks factory. Price on the high side imo, but definitely transformed the rear-end. I would recommend you purchase this diffuser!

    Looks amazing!!!

I love the look of this really wakes up the rear end of my 2013 race red mustang gt and you don't have to cut your bumper! The only thing I had an issue is when you install it you have one shot to make it perfect I have a tiny gap it was due to when I put the tabs on the valence I guess I didn't put it right it didn't come with any instructions where to place the tabs so I had to look it up but other then that amazing product would deff recommend!!! MUST BUY !

    Fitment

Looks good, but fitment is not the greatest. The little additional tabs you have to put on are terrible. I had to find a way to make it more secure because the tape did not do the job, and yes i prepped the surface. The price is not bad and looks awesome thats why it gets 4 stars.

Adds an aggressive look but caution with the install

I have to mimic what another review said. Product leaves room for improvement for installation. One shot with the 3M tape and adhesive. The support tabs are useless and as stated by another person, should be one piece. Just needs improvement for over exhaust area. Adds a great look though and increases the aggressiveness to the tail end. More so than I had expected. Its a bit darker shade of black than the license plate surround and MMD decklid but perhaps over time in the sun?

Great product, not so great instructions

I bought this rear valance to add some unique style to my Mustang, which it definitely does. The valance itself is light weight but seems durable. I have had mine on through most of this winter and it has held up very well. It gives my V6 the meaner look I was wanting, so mission accomplished there. Where I had issues was when I went to install, the instructions were very vague when it came to where to put the two small tabs. No close up photos or detailed instructions, just two red circles around a far away pic of the rear of the car. Now, I'm not the village idiot and I do all my mods myself, but I really could not figure out exactly where to put them on. I call AM support and they talked to an engineer and their response was that the product was "too new" and they could not help me. I told them they might want to revise the instructions, so hopefully they have. I ended up with slight gaps on the sides, but I think it was because I did not install the tabs correctly. Regardless, it still looks good and am satisfied with my purchase, though a little disappointed in the support.

    You get one shot

This product leaves much to be desired for installation purposes. The item looks great, don't get me wrong, but you get one shot to put it on via the 3M tape. Maybe it was too hot here in FL, but the little "support tabs" are worthless as it should be all one piece. The tabs do not want to stay attached to the rear bumper over the exhaust pipe, both released after 24 hours, I reapplied again and placed a bottle jack and floor jack underneath to let it set overnight, got about 3 days out of that try until the driver side fell. Like I said this product would be a 5/5 all the way down if they could figure out something different over the exhaust pockets.

    Perfect look

This was just what the back of my car needed. I have the Pypes Pype-Bomb axel back exhaust and felt like the exhaust tips stuck out way too far and looked funny. Installing this fixed the problem and looks pretty good if you ask me. I was a little confused on where the two support peices went that come with it as I thought it was not very clear on the directions but I figured it out after about five minutes of starring at it.
