Review & Install Video

Hey this is Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and today we’re going to be breaking down the Tokico HP Series shocks and struts, available for all 99-04 Mustangs. Tokico made its presence known in the aftermarket suspension world over 50 years ago and then solidified their name by basically inventing the modern twin tube shock absorber back in the 70s. The HP Series is a great entry level aftermarket shock and strut and continues to be a popular choice with many car owners, and is still a top rated customer item here on the site. These shocks are going to be perfect for someone who’s either planning on lowering their car soon, or has already done so, or just needs to replace a worn out of blown factory shock. When you put aftermarket lowering springs on your factory suspension, it will put a ton of added stress on those factory units, oftentimes leading to a bouncy ride, which can often lead to blown shocks or struts. Besides being able to handle the added stresses of a lowered car with ease, these aftermarket shocks and struts will also greatly improve your cars performance as well, they’re going to eliminate body roll in corners, they’re actually going to prevent dive in while breaking, and squat during acceleration, helping you eliminate that annoying wheel hop. Installing a new set of shocks and struts is probably something which sounds a little harder than it actually is, however if you have a good set of hand tools, basic floor jack, and jack stands, and some confidence, you should be able to tackle each corner in about 30 minutes. If you’re purchasing a set of aftermarket lowering springs along with these Tokicos, then I would strongly recommend getting your car realigned when you get the install all wrapped up. Depending on how low you go, you might want to invest in a set of Camber plates as well, just so you can properly dial in your alignment without chewing up your tires. While the HP series may not offer a dampening adjustment like some more costly options, there’s no doubt they are a great entry level aftermarket shock and strut, that can handle pretty much anything you throw at them, and will help your Mustang ride like new again.

Ideal Replacement. If your Mustang is bottoming out on the smallest speed bumps, consider replacing your worn out shocks with Tokico HP Series Struts.

Daily Driver Friendly. Tokico HP Series Shocks offer superior performance and traction without taking away from the comfort of your ride. Even rough roads or potholes won't be a problem with the Tokico HP Series Shocks.

Improved Handling. Shocks are a critical part of your suspension and help provide traction when you're accelerating or cornering. Tokico HP Series Shocks are specially designed to help keep your tires planted under all conditions while keeping your ride comfortable.

Superior Quality. Tokico products have been the choice of OE manufacturers for decades for their superior quality, durability, and performance. Tokico's precision manufacturing process and dedication to producing premium quality parts make them a perfect choice for your Mustang.

Application. This Tokico HP Series Shock is designed for 1994-2004 Mustangs. Does not fit 1999-2004 Cobras with IRS.

Technical Note. Installation may require professional shop assistance.

What is the advantage of this shock over the KYB GR2? I want to replace my shocks, just don't want to pay extra if there is no real difference between the two shocks.

  • The question back to you is: what is the goal? Track car, daily driver, auto cross? If this is your daily driver and you don't take it to the track but rarely, the Tokico HP's are for you. If you autocross, you may want adjustabliity so the KYB are your best choice, or Tokico D-Spec. If this is a track car, coil overs are what you need. So if you're on the fence based on price, go with the Tokico HP's for your daily driver. You won't have noticed the difference between them over the KYB's.

Do you have to get new struts, to put the new Tokico shocks? do you need new struts or none at all to put in the new rear shocks?

  • It's not required to install new struts at the same time as new shocks. That said, I'd recommend doing them at the same time. You will feel the handling improvement much more by doing all 4 corners. Hope this helps!

Do you have to buy two or is this a pair?

  • These shocks are sold individually so you would need to order (2) for a complete rear set.

    Stuck like Glue

I installed these bad-boys with a buddy last night. Both sides took about 60 mins max to install. Instant change in the way it corners, and handles winding roads....had to take it on a 2 hour test drive once completed :)

    Great Buy!

I ordered a set(2) of Hp Series Shocks for my 2002 GT. What a difference in ride control vs. the old worn out stock shocks. Super easy to install. I can't comment on the life of them yet cause they have only been in the car for a couple of weeks.

    Great Product

Bought a set of Tokico HP shocks and struts. The shipping only took a couple of days from PA to NH. Install was a breeze. Even before putting in the C springs in my 01 V6 I noticed a huge difference in ride quality. There was no more bouncing after hitting a bump. Rock solid! Combined with the C springs it rides like a completely different (and much better) car.

    Big Difference

I and some of my friends installed these struts in a short time, and they were a big improvement over the aging stocks. Ride quality is great, and the car doesn't bounce after speed bumps anymore!

    Huge improvement over stock

I installed these shocks (front and rear) along with a set of Mach I springs on my 1996 Mustang GT and I noticed a huge improvement in ride quality and handling. I was literally "shocked" at how much better it it was. It feels like a totally different car. I highly recommend these shocks.

    Awesome Shocks!!!

These Tokicos are perfect for replacing your stock worn out shocks, especially after lowering your car. I bought the Ford Racing B springs which dropped the car only about 1.25" in the front and 1" in the rear. The ride was bouncy and hard to control with my stock shocks, to the point that I thought my alignment was way off but it wasn't. As soon as I dropped these shocks in on all four corners, I had all the control and road feel back that I was missing. I didn't realize how important shocks are as a component of the suspension system but I do now! What a difference. If you do mostly on road driving and very little track days, this is perfect for you.

    2000 gt convertible

I installed eibach lowering springs about a week before buying these and the ride was pretty rough and I would scrape EVERYWHERE! Bought shocks and struts and after about 2 hours of install for all four corners my car handles soooo much better,I rarely scrape anymore and cornering speeds also increased, I even noticed butter acceleration and less wheel spin, I would recommend these shocks and struts to anyone looking to increase ride quality at a reasonable price

    Best bang for your buck

great product. Looks great as well, matched with H&R super sport springs. Very easy to install. Once you have the trunk lining removed, it only takes about 20 minutes per side if that. Would recommend using Loctite or a locking washer for the lower bolt. The bolts that were included didnt stay very tight.
