difference betwwn Shift Kit and Valve Body? What is the difference between Performance Automatic Street/Strip Shift Kit (96-00 GT, V6) and Performance Automatic Street/Strip Valve Body - Auto (96-00 GT, V6)?

    Osama

    • The shift kit is the valve body gaskets and springs and the valve body kit is the valve body itself for your trans.

I already have a bama custom tune installed. If I purchase and install this shift kit, will I have to get another custom tune sent? Or will it not effect it?

    Carl91

    • The Performance Automatic Street/Strip Shift Kit does not require a tune, however you may want to have your tuner adjust the shift pressures to avoid shifts that may be too hard for daily driving comfort with the tune's trans program and the shift kit combined.

So for this to work you have to buy all 3 parts shown in the picture?

    RandyV

    • The Performance Automatic Street/Strip Shift Kit will include the 3 valve body plates and 7 springs pictured, so you will just need to buy this kit for it to work.

Is this the equivalent to the J-mod without having to drill out the gasket yourself?

    98whitepony

    • The Performance Automatic Street/Strip Shift Kit is giving you the same benefits as the J-Mod. I personally prefer the J-Mod myself but this will be a good upgrade if you did not want to alter your factory transmission parts yourself. I will put a link below to an article written up by one of our Mustang experts about the J-Mod. http://www.americanmuscle.com/what-is-a-j-mod.html

Should I buy this if I'm getting a tuner? Would they pair better together?

    rodr

    • Not if you aren't really experienced with transmissions. if you're gonna do anything buy a pre-assembled valve body.

      Recommend for an Automatic

If you have an Automatic mustang than you know what a pig these cars are stock and how sloppy the shifts are. After leaving my friends at Transmission King in Plantation, Fl I took it for a spin and light on the throttle you couldn't tell any modification was done to the car. However, you can feel an improvement in the shifts. From a dead stop when I floored the gas pedal this thing burned the back tires real nice and will nicely snap your neck from first to second !!! Now all my car needs is a good converter and trans cooler which I'll upgrade with the mishimoto cooler w/ fan that AM sells. A nice overhaul would benefit the transmission as well, upgrading things that are known to be weak such as the forward drums, the overdrive band, extra clutches/frictions and the tailshaft lubrication mod to help put the power to the ground with some good old 4.10s in the back followed by a lighter aluminum driveshaft to reduce weight on the rotational mass :-) with some weight reduction, drag radicals, suspension upgrade and some 04" cobra front brakes for stopping power with basic bolt one such as Intake, mass air-flow meter, throttle-plenum, steeda UDPs, and a good exhaust combination on a custom tune with adjusted shift points this car is capable of being a daily driver on pump gas with the possibility of having a tune for 87 octane and one for premium unleaded running high 12s/low 13s all motor!

      chirping stang

Everything in the kit made a difference towards my auto tranny. Shifts hard and chirps the tires from 1st-2nd gear. Instructions could be more specific but after finishing you could help anyone with no problem. Also I notice that it takes more wear off of tranny and runs smoothly and the acceleration was a little faster. This is what should be on all transmissions. Highly recommend this.

PERFORMANCE AUTOMATIC STREET/STRIP SHIFT KIT (96-00 GT, V6)

I work at a small used car store and we have a full time tech. With some interruptions it took him 2.5 -3.0 hours. He had done other kits before but never on a Mustang. He had no problems with the installation. The performance difference is amazing. The kit is paired with a 3.73 gear. The shifts are firm even at "normal" acceleration and when I get on it the tires will chirp in 3rd gear. My "Stang" also sports a 78 mm throttle body and plenum, under pulleys, and a cold air intake. This latest upgrade really woke up my pony. Thanks AmericanMuscle for another quality upgrade..

      97 v6 jmod install

My 97 install went pretty smoothly. Keeping track of all the screws was the worst. On my v6 I don't get ant tire chirping but man those shifts do get firm and quick. Not to mention you are cleaning your tranny out doing this improving its life. Aft er I get a pretty swap on this 97 I bet those tires will break loose.

      Simply amazing!

Before the shift kit It would lag or hesitate a little when going from 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd but after this kit there is no hesitation what so ever! I recommend this shift kit to everyone now. My car shift so smooth and so fast now! I paired this with ford racings 4.10 gears and it will get the car loose in 2nd

The car shifts like it should now....1 to 2 shift is really firm...and 2 to 3 when u step on it really shifts firm also!... The shop put new fluid in and it took about 1/2 the day for the install...but I really love this product...I would recommend this product to all automatic mustang owners to make ur mustang a mobb stang!

      shift kit

My GT now chirps the tires when shifting from 1st to 2nd, and even goes sideways a little bit depending on how much gas i have my foot on. I had a guy put this in for me and he works at a racing shop so i cant tell you how hard or easy to install it. he only charged me 75 dollars so it might not be that bad. im loving the no hesitation between shifts, this is a must buy for the sloppy shifting factory transmission.

      big bang!!

Paired this kit with the 4.10 gears and 93 octane, and all I can say is "who in the hecks car is this?" The car no longer sluggishly searches for gears and shifts, its always a right away catch. 1st gear and 2nd gear at wot, breaks my tires aloose everytime and my car is on 20" rims. Be warned that if you mistakenly take out the overdrive piston like I did, you have to reseat the od band, if not then you won't have overdrive, the car will just go into neutral instead, I used a cai clamp bent folksy up on the overdrive band while I pushed the piston back in with a jack. Other than that everything went smooth, also you can drop the valve body by just taking out all of the 8mm bolts and leaving the 10mm in place, will make things a lot easier. But overall for the price, this is the second best mod to be done on a v6.

the shift kit works great and made my car a lot more fun to drive.that being said the instruction sheet could have been a little more clear. I got it together but had to get help from a transmission guy.

      SOLID SHIFTS

for now I've decided to stick the my auto tranny for my build and to throw in this kit just to see what it could do.... the slipping factory shifts were really irritating and with this kit there was nothing but solid hard shifts. will for sure buy this kit when I upgrade but for all the stock trannys its a must as well thanks AM!!!1

Well before this install my mustang wouldnt shift right. when shifting from 2nd to 3rd it wouldnt keep reving untill i would let go off the gas then it would shift hard. so i heard that it might be the valve body gaskets so i ordered this installed it and... oh man does shift way firmer now. no lag it shifts how it suppose to. FYI it took me bout 9 quarts of mercon V oil to fill
