Hey, guys. Adam here with americanmuscle.com and today we're taking a closer look at, installing and of course dyno testing the Bama X4 SF4 Power Flash Tuner by SCT with two custom tunes available for the '15 to '17 EcoBoost Mustang. Before we jump into things, guys, let's go straight into dyno numbers. We strapped down our EcoBoost S550 to the dyno completely bone stock with the exception of 93 octane in the tank to establish a baseline run. We ran it and walked away with 258 horsepower, 277 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels. We then of course ran it under the same conditions with our 93 race tune from Bama uploaded, 93 octane in the tank. Walked away with 283 horsepower, 342 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels. Good for peak gains of 25 horsepower and 65 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels. Those numbers alone are very impressive but the curve gains get even better. We're looking at curve gains of up to 44 horsepower and 60 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels. Now, guys, that is power that you're going to feel. We have really good torque gains at the low end here, good horsepower gains at the top end of the RPM band. All around really gonna make for a huge difference in driving experience out in the road. And these numbers are exactly what we expect from an EcoBoost, right. They tune so well. With just a simple 93 tune you can pick up really great numbers as we just saw.Now jumping right into the X4 device here from SCT it comes with two custom tunes from Bama. Now tune number one will be an 87 octane tune. Great for the daily driver, even the weekend warrior just looking for a little something extra to make driving a little bit more enjoyable giving you a small bump in power, increased shift firmness for the automatic guys out there. Taking air fuel ratio, spark, timing, all that good stuff into consideration to really make sure that you're getting the best out of your vehicle. If you're looking to maximize performance, 93 race tune from Bama is where it's at and that's exactly what we just saw on the dyno there. That's really just maximizing the performance of the EcoBoost giving you the most that you can get out of it when it comes to a simple pump gas tune.Now aside from the tunes themselves, guys, know that every time you purchase an X4 you're automatically enrolled in the Bama Free Tunes For Life program when picking up the Bama custom tunes. Now Free Tunes For Life is great for guys looking to maybe modify their vehicle over the long haul. Any time you pick up a power adder like a cold air intake, a cat-back or long tube headers you can hit up Bama, you get your tunes revised for free as long as you have that device and your vehicle paired. Now that's a great value in itself. Two custom tunes are a good value of about 150 bucks. Factor in the free tunes for life and it's a really good deal, at least in my opinion.Now aside from that, you get a couple of other features that you should really take advantage of with the X4 including the gauges screen. You can monitor live engine vitals on the fly from the driver seat. Things like air fuel ratio, coolant temp, trans temp, intake air temp. There's so many options out there. You can monitor it on the fly and see how your vehicle is performing and you can change up that screen as well which we'll focus on in just a little bit. You can also take advantage of the data logging option. You can data log your vehicle's performance, communicate that back to Bama if you're looking to get some tunes revised, maybe change up a few factors in the tune to see if it reaps more benefits. That's always done right there on the X4 device very easily. Now aside from that, there's a DTC code reader. You can read and clear the diagnostic trouble codes any time that check engine light comes up. Get the code, read the description, clear it right there on the device without needing to pick up a different one. All this is wrapped into the X4 there which also has Wi-Fi capabilities so you can connect the Wi-Fi and download software updates right there without having to need a laptop. All of that is built in for about 400 bucks for this device including those two custom tunes from Bama and the free tunes program.Now install I'm gonna give one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter. Anybody can tackle this in the driveway at home with about 30 minutes from start to finish. It is so easy to do. As a matter of fact, we're gonna jump over to a clip of me showing you guys how to upload the tune and I'll walk you through all the features inside of our 2018 EcoBoost but know that this process for the tune upload and all the features is the exact same for any S550 GT EcoBoost or V6. What do you say we head over there and take a look?Guys, first up here, grab the harness included in the kit. You're gonna plug in this side to the OBD2 port located on the left side under your driver side dashboard. Once that's plugged in, take the other side, pop it into the slot on the top of your X4 and we're good to get started.All right. From the main menu I'm gonna take you guys through the process of tuning your vehicle. So select program vehicle from that main menu, hit continue on the street notice. Put your key in the on position but don't start your engine and press continue. Now it'll give you a bunch of different options to actually modify any tune you select. We're gonna go with 93 race but select the one that you wanna flash now. At this point it'll move forward asking you if you wanna make any additional changes. There's a bunch of menus relating to that so make the changes you want. We're gonna keep our file pretty much the same that it comes with from Bama. All right, so you wanna change anything you see on this menu and hit approve. Continue to special options including tire size, things like that. So did you change tire size? We did not. Don't wanna change gear ratio and no on the TPMS settings. Confirm that it'll disable your preloaded tune to move forward. All right. Key in the on position if you haven't done so already. And it'll save your stock tune to the device and then begin to flash. It'll load 0 to 100 a couple of times. Just let it do its thing. Don't unplug it and don't turn the vehicle off unless it directs you to. All right. At this point it lets us know the download's complete. You can select done and you're good to go.Before we disconnect I wanna take you through some of the other features of the X4. So if you go under program vehicle, gauges and data log is your next selection. You wanna make sure the key is on before you move any forward. What this will do is allow you to monitor live engine vitals on the fly at any time as long as your device is plugged in. Now it's more of a gauge pod but there's multiple pods, multiple gauges. As you can see on the screen, we have two. They're both the same at the moment but they are customizable. Now if you go to the right you can data log, you can record a data log, select the data log file, select the gauge layout. I'm gonna change that gauge layout to something we can monitor three pieces of information with. Now we have boost in PSI, control module voltage and coolant temp but you can change those like I said. So in EcoBoost you might wanna monitor boost. Control module voltage, coolant temp, those are all customizable. If I wanna change coolant temp to intake air temp we can hit approve on that and it changes that gauge. You can monitor up to eight at a time. You wanna select the gauge layout that monitors eight. This is the max. Now it's really useful for guys who wanna take that care of that information on the fly. And again, you can record data logs, send that to your tuner, make revisions, so on and so forth. Now if you hit stop data log tt takes you back to the main menu.Under that, vehicle functions. Read DTC codes, clear DTC codes and special functions. Now DTC being diagnostic trouble code so if your check engine light comes on, plug this device in, read the code, get the description and then you can clear it once it's taken care of. No need to pick up any additional device. Special functions most people won't touch. Cam re-learn, cam reset those we'll leave be for now. Most people aren't gonna have to worry about that.Vehicle info. This is useful if you're requesting a new tune, if you need access to your VIN number, your ECU strategy code. That's gonna be on hand. Device info, similar but for your X4 you'll have the part number, serial number, the firmware and software version, how many unlocks you have, if you status is married, so on and so forth. And then finally device settings. You can check for updates both plugged in or via Wi-Fi which I think is very useful. Wi-Fi, if you're in range of a Wi-Fi network you can connect that to do everything wirelessly. The only big difference here between this and a newer Rev-X is there are no cloud capability so everything's done on the computer as far as downloading tunes but if you're not too worried about that wireless aspect of it, the X4 is still a really good device.The rest of the settings are pretty much simple for any handheld, brightness, orientation. You can change the landscape. You can change the theme from red to blue. You can change it to dark. There's a number of settings there. There's also audio. So every time you click a button there's a little beep. You can turn that off here and that way you don't have to worry about that sound.Finally, startup function I think is very useful for guys who are always going to want to monitor those gauges that we looked at, the gauges and data log screen. You can select your startup to go immediately to the gauges screen. So if you have this constantly plugged in to your OBD2 and you have it mounted on the windshield this might be a good thing to take advantage of.Finally, factory reset. We hit exit, back to the main menu and that's your X4. That's gonna wrap up my review, install and dyno test for the Bama X4 SF4 Power Flash Tuner available with two custom tunes for the '15 to '17 EcoBoost. Using the highest grade of fuel available in your area is mandatory as boost, timing, VCT, fuel, and throttle response settings are very aggressive. Technical Note About Fuel. Unleaded race fuel can also be used, but Stoichiometric points must be supplied.
