Review & Installation Video

Stephanie with AmericanMuscle.com, here with this Borla off-road downpipe that's available for all 2015 and up EcoBoost Mustangs. Like most factory exhaust pieces, the factory downpipe on the EcoBoost Mustang is pretty restrictive. So this downpipe is going to be for the owners who are looking for less restriction, which ultimately leads to some improvements in performance, because it helps the airflow of the turbo, where you pretty much want things as unrestricted as possible. So you can spool the turbo more quickly, which is where your gains will come from. Some of the main features of this particular downpipe are that it's a full stainless steel three-inch pipe, which is a bigger diameter than the stock pipe. And it's also Mandrel-bent, which may sound trivial to some, but it's important for smoother airflow. Another thing is this downpipe is uncatted, so there's an additional reason as to why this is less restrictive and more free-flowing than the factory downpipe. One of the great things about this downpipe is that it gives you an option when it comes to the rest of your exhaust. Borla includes an adapter for this downpipe, so you can still use your stock exhaust if you want, which I think is nice because you can still get the benefits of an aftermarket downpipe but you don't have to worry about springing for other exhaust system components while you're at it. Or your other option here is to go with a three-inch cat-back from Borla down the road if you want. And Borla is one of the only companies that give you this choice right now of sticking with your stock exhaust or going with an aftermarket cat-back. So even though the main idea behind an aftermarket downpipe is to help give the turbo unhindered airflow, swapping out your factory downpipe is also going to give you more sound, too. And since this particular downpipe is an off-road or uncatted downpipe, you can expect an even louder result. And speaking of this being an off-road option, keep in mind that it's probably best to have a hand-held tuner or have a reprogram after the install since you are removing the cat here. The Borla downpipe is a touch more expensive than other options that are on the site right now, costing just under $500. But it's one of the only full three-inch options out there, meaning it's got a three-inch diameter from start to finish, and it gives you that adapter if you need it. Another thing to point out here, the less expensive options on the site have the flux pipe position in a different location than the more expensive options do. They have it more in line with the pipe, while options like the Borla here have the flex pipe sitting more horizontal. If you think about it, the inline 2.3 that the EcoBoost has is going to be moving left to right, so I think this is a better placement for that flex pipe. When it comes to the install, luckily this isn't a bad one. You're probably looking at a few hours to get everything done, and you won't need anything out of the ordinary, just a few sockets and some wrenches, and a jack and some stands so you can get under the car. Overall, I'm going to call this a one out of three wrenches on the scale. So wrapping things up here, this is an off-road full three-inch stainless downpipe that comes with an adapter that you can use or not use, depending on your cat-back situation. And not only is this going to increase performance, but it's also going to open up some sound on the EcoBoost as well. So I'd be sure to check this out more for yourself online. I'm Stephanie, and for all things Mustang, keep it right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

More Power and Performance. Add even more horsepower and torque to the rear wheels of your turbocharged Mustang by installing a Borla 3" Off-Road Down Pipe. This Borla Off-Road Down Pipe is larger than stock and eliminates the power robbing stock catalytic converter to help release all the hidden power and performance your S550 EcoBoost Mustang has to offer.

More Aggressive Sound. Borla's Performance Down Pipe not only helps increase power and performance, but it also adds a much more aggressive exhaust note to your S550 EcoBoost Mustang, when compared to the stock down pipe.

Stainless Steel Construction. Manufactured from high quality T-304 stainless steel for superior strength and corrosion resistance, this Borla Down Pipe features ultra smooth mandrel bent 3" diameter tubing to improve exhaust flow for more power.

Required Upgrade. For proper operation and maximum power potential this Down Pipe will require reprogramming the vehicles computer. AmericanMuscle recommends a Bama custom tune with a Mustang Handheld Tuner to reprogram the vehicles computer (ECU) for proper operation.

Application. The Borla 3" Performance Off-Road Down Pipe is designed to fit all 2015-2017 EcoBoost Mustangs. This Borla 3" Down Pipe can be install with a matching Borla Cat-Back or the factory 2.25" exhaust with the use of the included step-down adapters.

Technical notes. Not legal for use on pollution controlled motor vehicles; intended for off road use only.

I have just installed the borla off road downpipe and since I've been seeing white smoke come from my tailpipes. Is this common for cattless down pipes?

RandyS

  • When installing catless pipes such as the Borla Downpipe, a number of factors can contribute to you seeing more smoke. First is that all exhaust pipes are typically coated in a thin oil, which will burn off slowly as the pipe heats/cools multiple times. Additionally since there is no longer a catalytic converter in the exhaust to catalyze a reaction in the exhaust gasses, a different set of gasses are being expelled from the exhaust. The amount of smoke should definitely lessen with time, however there may be a small amount once the coating has burnt off completely.

Will a flow master outlaw axle back fit on this?

KyleM

  • The Flowmaster Outlaw Axle Back will fit with the Borla Down Pipe. It will connect to the stock piping that connects to the down pipe.

I have a flowmaster exhaust would this fit

AlbertG

  • This Borla Downpipe works with a variety of exhausts, including Flowmaster exhausts. While every exhaust is a little different, it would be difficult to guarantee fitment without knowing which Flowmaster exhaust that is on your vehicle. If you have the Flowmaster American Thunder Cat-Back Exhaust, Item 389696, it will be a direct bolt on installation. Additionally, please note that for proper operation and maximum power potential this down pipe will require reprogramming the vehicles computer. https://www.americanmuscle.com/flowmaster-american-thunder-catback-2015eco.html

    It's a borla duh

Yet again borla comes out with a very great piece of work direct bolt on, no hassle piece, this time for the new ecoboost 2.3 turbo and man does it change up the torque curve and sound of this already amazing motor. Tie this together with a cold air and a tune and your elk on your way to being a 5liter eater.

    Great sound. More power!

I bought this product to go with my Borla Stinger cat back exhaust that I had previously purchased. It's definitely loud enough when you get on the throttle and sounds great at normal acceleration too. I don't think I've ever heard a 4 cylinder produce this deep of a sound. I've read several issues with people having a burning oil smell at idle and mine did this same thing. There is a Ford TSB that corrects this issue. If it's a 2015-16 model they make an updated crankcase vent oil separator that replaces the one on your car if yours falls into a certain criteria. Mine had the old style installed. I ordered the parts from a dealer and had my personal tuner install them. Not a bit of smoke now. The TSB number is TSB 15-0192. Hope this helps. Will save you a lot of frustration.

    Excellent Build Quality

When I first opened the packaging for the downpipe, I immediately noticed that it had perfectly formed welds with heavy gauge metals at its structurally reinforced areas. I can tell that longevity and durability will not be an issue with this pipe. Installation was standard, but the power and torque gains are significant and noticeable, not to mention the power arrives earlier in the RPM range as the DP allows the turbine to actuate the compressor faster and more efficiently. Make sure that you tune your Mustang accordingly, as removing the catalytic converter puts you at risk for over-boosting, and the O2 sensor will throw a CEL. Because the DP is unprotected by catalytic converters, you may notice the exhaust gas appears to be full of oily smoke. This is not to be of tremendous concern, the cat' normally filters out this smoke from the exhaust. The best way to eliminate this is with a proper tune, and an oil catch-can or separator. I would absolutely recommend this to anybody looking to add a little power to their Ecoboost and release the sultry sounds of that turbo spooling into the ambiance where it belongs.
