- Gather necessary tools and parts, including spark plugs, a ratchet, a spark plug socket, extensions, a gapping tool, and dielectric grease.
- Remove spark plug wires or ignition coils by gently twisting the boot about one-quarter turn and pulling straight off.
- Clear dirt or fluids from the spark plug seat area using compressed air, a shop vacuum, or by blowing through the spark plug hole with a straw.
- Remove old spark plugs and arrange them in cylinder order while visually inspecting for damage or wear.
- Gap new spark plugs according to manufacturer specifications using a gapping tool to measure and adjust as needed.
- Start threading new spark plugs by hand to avoid cross-threading, then tighten with a torque wrench to the recommended torque specification.
- Inspect spark plug wires, boots, or coils for brittleness, cracking, or corrosion and replace if damaged.
- Apply dielectric grease to the inside of each spark plug boot to ensure good electrical contact and resistance to moisture, then reinstall wires or coils securely.
- After installation, start the engine and check for smooth operation. Recheck firing order and coil connections if the engine runs rough or misfires.
