Jake: Jake here for American Muscle, and today, I'm checking out the C&L CX2 Front Strut, fitting 1994 to 2004 Mustangs. This is gonna be a great choice for the SN95 Mustang owner who wants an upgraded performance shock for a really reasonable price. If you're looking to upgrade your Mustang's suspension, and get better handling out of a bolt-in part, without breaking the bank, this is gonna be a great choice for you.Updating your shocks is going to make a world of difference, especially if your current ones are older, or maybe even a bit worn out. And if you're looking to carve up some corners, or just have more control over your car's movements, then the CX2 is gonna help you out there. Now, this is a twin-tube shock, and it has a larger-diameter piston versus your stock unit, and thus is gonna have better damping and rebound than your stock shocks too. Now, that means it's also gonna be a bit stiffer over bumps, so it's gonna make this a little bit harder to compress, making for less overall body roll. Now, less movement and less body roll means more grip in the corners. It means that your tires are gonna stay in touch with the pavement much easier. And, that stiffer damping means that this is gonna handle corners better than your stock setup would because, there's not gonna be as much weight transferring when you turn the wheel. It is worth noting that the damping and rebound is set here from the factory. This is not an adjustable shock. But they are tuned specifically for your Mustang, so you can just bolt this in, and not have to worry about it, though you will certainly be able to feel the difference. Now, if any of this sounds familiar, it's because C&L also offers a matching rear shock for this gen Mustang as well, and I highly recommend getting a fully matched set, front and rear, for the best performance and handling. That one is also really reasonable, and it is available on our site, so check it out as well. It's also worth noting that, as you may have noticed here, there is only one shock on this table. That means that these are indeed sold separately, so you need to make sure you get two when you buy, so just double-check the quantity when you put them in your cart.Construction here is all pretty solid. The outer housing is made from steel, and it's finished in this really nice dark blue powder coat, which, I'm partial to the color. Hopefully you are as well. And like we were just talking about, this is a twin-tube design, with a larger-diameter piston and rod, so this is gonna be pretty stout, and should hold up well in the long run.But pricing is perhaps the biggest selling point, and that is because this is only gonna run you $100, making it the least expensive front shock available for this gen Mustang, especially when it comes to a performance shock. Now, again, these are sold separately, so you will need to get two. But, this is still gonna far undercut most of the other options available, and it will offer you improved performance, and I have to say, I am a big fan of that.Installation will get a 2 out of 3 on our difficulty meter, and it should take you about an hour to complete each one. Now, this is a totally bolt-on operation. No modifications required. You've got the flange already here, ready to go as it comes out of the box, and you don't even need to mess with a spring compressor because of how these cars are set up. And to show you how to get this mounted on your car, let's head over to the install bay.Man: For this install, you will need an impact, extension, 21 and 24-millimeter sockets, or a 15/16 socket, 21-millimeter wrench, a flathead screwdriver, a bungee cord, and also, not shown here, a jack and jack stands. What's up, guys? Today we're gonna be installing a new strut on our Mustang, so let's get started. So, we're gonna start things off here by removing this bracket for our ABS line here. So, we're gonna grab our 15/16 socket, on our impact. Go ahead and run that off real quick. And we can go ahead and get this out of the way. Next, we can go ahead and grab our 24-millimeter socket and 21-millimeter wrench, and go ahead and remove our two lower mounting bolts here. Now, you may need to add in a small extension for this lower one. Go ahead and get this off now. So, you're gonna wanna leave one of your lower mounting bolts in for now. You can remove the nut, as we showed you. Just leave the bolt in itself. That's gonna hold everything in place while we come up to the top here and loosen up our top nut. So, as you can see, ours has kind of been on there for a while. It's got a little bit of corrosion, so we're gonna add some penetrating lubricant first, just to kind of give us a little bit of a helping hand. Then we're gonna grab a flathead screwdriver and a 21-millimeter wrench. Go ahead and get our wrench on our nut, and this screwdriver's just gonna help hold our shaft in place. Now we're gonna go ahead and use our 21-millimeter socket on our impact here, and that'll give it enough shock to kind of break it loose from the shaft. Now, if you are using hand tools, you definitely want to add in a large flathead screwdriver to the top of your shaft, to hold it from spinning. The impact's just gonna kind of overcome that. So, now we've got our nut off. We're gonna remove our top washer, as well as top bushing, and the spacer. So, you do wanna remember the orientation that these go, because this kit is gonna reuse these. So, we'll kind of reassemble it, as it sits, like so, spacer inside of the bushing, and then the top washer, oriented like this, and we'll go ahead and keep everything in line as it is, and set it to the side. So, as you can see, our knuckle here has come out just a bit, which is what we want. And to prevent it from going too far, we're gonna grab a bungee cord, hook that around our caliper, and then we'll find a suitable spot back here. And that's just to prevent it from falling out too far and causing excess tension on our brake line or ABS line, but we do want it to come out some. So, now that we've got that done, we'll go ahead and remove the bottom mounting bolt that we still have in here, and then go ahead and remove our strut. So, now I'm gonna push my knuckle back in just a little bit, hold it there with my chest. I'll grab and support my strut, pull my bottom bolt out. Now we can go ahead and slowly let our strut come out. And we'll go ahead, fully remove that. So, we are gonna be reusing our dust cover from our factory strut. So, we've got that off the factory one. It just slides right off. And we'll put it right back on to our new one here. And what we're gonna do is grab one of our factory mounting bolts, and we're gonna go right back up into position here, with our new strut. And we just wanna make sure our top shaft is pointing towards our upper mounting hole. We're not so worried about it yet. And we're gonna go ahead and maneuver our knuckle. So, now we're gonna go ahead and support our strut, and we're gonna push in a bit on our knuckle. And we're gonna work our bottom mount into place, and reinstall one of our factory bolts here. This may be a little bit tricky, but if you're just patient with it, should go right back in. Yeah. Now that we've got that one in, we'll go ahead and get our other one on. Now we'll go ahead and get our top one through. Then we can go ahead and loosely reinstall our nuts. Remember, this bracket does not go on until after these nuts are installed. Okay. And we're just gonna leave these hand-tight for now, until we get our top mounting bushing and nut on, and then we'll come back and tighten everything down all at once. So, now we've got the car lowered down enough to get the floor jack underneath the lower control arm, and we're gonna use that to push our shock up high enough, in order to get our top mounting nut and bushing and everything on that we need, just to get it in place. So, we'll go ahead and get that up now. So, remember, we've got our spacer inside of our bushing here. I'm just gonna kind of center our shaft here. This is why we didn't tighten it fully, just to make it a little easier. We'll go ahead and drop that in all the way. And you'll notice, we still need to go up just a little bit, which we'll do that now. That should be good enough. Got everything nice and seated and centered. You'll be able to tell. Your bushing won't move after that. So now, we'll reinstall our top washer. So, now that we've got our bushing and spacer and top washer on, we're gonna go ahead and install our provided top mounting nut, which is a new locking nut. We'll go ahead and get that in position here, get it hand-tight, and then we'll go up a little bit more with the jack, just so tightening the nut isn't doing all the work. So, now we're gonna go ahead and get this tightened down. We're gonna use our 24-millimeter socket on our impact, and run this in. Okay. So, now we'll go ahead and tighten down our two lower mounting bolts, with our 24-millimeter socket and 21-millimeter wrench. Now that we have those tightened, we can go ahead and reinstall our ABS bracket, reinstall our nut. Gonna hand-tighten that back down. So now, once you've got everything done for this side, you can go ahead and repeat the same process for the other side.Jake: That's gonna wrap it up for our review and install of the C&L CX2 Front Strut for 1994 to 2004 Mustangs. Thanks so much for watching, and remember, for all things Mustang, be sure to keep it right here at americanmuscle.com.
