Jake: Jake here for AmericanMuscle, and today, I'm checking out the C&L CX2 Rear Shock, fitting 1994 to 2004 Mustangs, excluding the '99 to '04 Cobra models. Now, the CX2 Rear Shock is going to be perfect for the SN95 Mustang owner who wants to get an upgrade of performance shock for a comparably reasonable price. If you're looking to upgrade your Mustang suspension, maybe you've done the front already and you want to get better handling out of a bolt-in part without going so far as breaking the bank, this is going to be a great choice for you. Upgrading your rear shocks is going to make a world of difference in the way that your car drives, especially if your current ones are older or maybe a little bit worn out. Running worn-out rear shocks could make for some sketchy moments, your rear axle moving around a bit more than it should. Plus, if you're looking to carve some corners, hit the track, or just generally have more control over your car's movements, the CX2 is going to help you out there. This is a twin-tube shock, and it's got a larger diameter piston versus your stock one, and thus it's going to have better damping and rebound versus your stock shocks as well.It also means that this is going to be a little bit stiffer over bumps. It's going to be a bit harder to compress, but that's going to make for less overall body roll and less movement, and less body roll means more grip in the corners, and that stiffer damping means that it's going to handle corners better than your stock setup would. If you do hit a windy road or a racetrack, you're definitely going to notice the improvement here. This is also going to be noticeable out on the street, and it's going to help keep that rear axle solidly planted on the ground, means your tires stay in contact with the pavement, which means that you have more grip. Now, it is worth noting here that the damping and rebound on this are fixed. This is not an adjustable shock, but it is tuned specifically for your Mustang, so you can just bolt it in and not have to worry about it. Now, if any of this sounds familiar, that is because C&L offers a matching front shock for the SN95 Mustang as well. Most everything is the same between them. They're just sold separately. I would highly recommend getting a fully matched set of front and rear for the best performance and handling. Now, the front shock is also really reasonably priced and available on our site, so be sure to check that out too. Now, it is again worth reiterating here that, as you might have noticed, there is only one shock on my table, so that means that these are sold separately. So when you do buy them, make sure you get two. Double-check that quantity in your cart.Construction here is predictably pretty solid. The outer housing is made of steel and it's finished in this really nice dark-blue powder coat. Personally, I'm a big fan of the color. It's almost a shame that you won't see it too much once it's on the car. And like we were talking about a moment ago, this is a twin-tube design. It's got a larger diameter piston and rod, so this is going to be pretty stout, especially as compared to a stock shock, and should hold up pretty well in the long run too. Now, pricing is something that I keep going on about, so enough chattering around. This is going to cost you about $75 per shock, and that makes it the least expensive rear shock available for this gen Mustang. And that's especially impressive considering this is touted as a performance shock. Now, again, these are sold separately, so you are going to need to get two. But even buying two of them is still going to far undercut most of the other options available out there, and it will still offer you improved performance. And I am a huge fan of something that improves performance, looks good, and costs under 100 bucks. Installation gets a two out of three on our difficulty meter and it should only take you about an hour to complete. Now, this is a totally bolt-on operation, no modifications required, and you don't even need to mess with the spring compressor, thankfully. However, you are going to have to lower down your rear axle. So it is a little bit tricky, especially if you're working in a driveway or don't have access to a lift. But to show you how to get this mounted up on your car, let's head over to the install bay.Man: For this install, you will need an impact, a ratchet, extension, 18-millimeter socket, 15-millimeter wrench, Channellocks, and adjustable wrench. Also not shown here is the jack and jack stands. What's up, guys? Today, we're gonna be doing new rear shocks on our Mustang, so let's get started. So we're gonna start things off inside the trunk here to access our upper shock mount. Now, you'll notice our trunk liner is a little bit worse for wear due to many installs and years of kind of just being worn out, but you should have some hand screws/clips that will be on your rear panel here, as well as a couple that will be up on your side panel. You're gonna want to go ahead and remove those. Once you have those removed, I said, ours is pretty beat up already. Go ahead, work our side panel out. Again, ours is already broken. So we have that out of the way. So, now, that we have our side panel off, we can go ahead and access our top mounting nut for our shock. So we're gonna grab our 15-millimeter ratcheting wrench first. We're gonna go ahead and see if we can get it off without having to grab onto our stud. But if we have to, we will take that approach. And as suspected, our shock shaft is twisting with the nut, so we'll go ahead and get something to grab onto the shaft. So, now, we'll get our 15-millimeter ratcheting wrench back onto our nut. And we're gonna use an adjustable wrench just for ease of not guessing what size our shaft is. Go ahead and get that on there. And then we'll go ahead and loosen up our shock nut. Once you get it just about to where it's about to come off, it shouldn't be spinning the shaft anymore. That should all just come right off like that. So, now, we'll go ahead and get our lower shock mounting bolt off using our 15-millimeter wrench, and our 18-millimeter socket, and extension on our impact. Now, that we've got our nut off of our bolt here, we'll go ahead and support our shock. Pull that off. Go ahead and work our shock out of the mount, remove our shock. So, now, we're ready to go on with our new shock. So what we're gonna do first, is make sure our bottom washer and bottom bushing are on our top shaft here. We're gonna go ahead and get that lined up with our top mounting point. Make sure that is good to go. And we're going to get our bottom mount in. You may find that this is a little bit more narrow than what your mount requires. So I'm going to go ahead and spread this out just a bit. So if you do find your bracket mounting ears are a little bit too closed in for your shock mount, which is fine, no big deal. It usually just happens over time from being tightened up, you know, cranked down and torqued from the factory. We're just going to go ahead and spread this out just a little bit. So we've got Channellocks. We're gonna grab one ear. Make sure you fully grab the ear. You don't want to just be working the end of it. We're just gonna give it a little bit of a tug on each one. Nothing crazy, you don't need to go far. And we'll go ahead get our shock back into place. Now, it fits nice and perfect, so we're gonna reinstall our factory 15-millimeter bolt. Get that through there, reinstall our factory 18-millimeter nut. And we're just gonna leave this hand tight for now, so we can get our top buttoned up, and then we'll come back down, tighten this up and we'll be good to go.So as you can see, we need our top mounting shaft to come up a bit more so we can get our bushing, washer, and nut in place. So we've got a floor jack underneath our lower mount of our shock. We're just gonna use that to push up a bit just to give us enough room to get everything in place on our top mount here. So we'll go ahead and do that now. Well, looks like we've got plenty of room now. So we'll go ahead and make sure this is centered. We'll get our top bushing and our washer on. Looks like we need to go up a little bit farther. Now, we have our top bushing and washer on, we'll go ahead and install our new supplied nut for our shock. Go ahead and get that tightened down. So we'll go ahead and get this tightened down with our 18-millimeter socket and ratchet. Check it periodically to make sure it's coming through. Now, that we've got that tightened up, we can go ahead and reinstall our side panel here. Put this in. Slide it underneath. Then yours, you would want to reinstall your hand screws over here, as well as on your rear panel. Now, we can go ahead and tighten down our lower mounting bolt, again, using our 15-millimeter wrench, an 18-millimeter socket, and extension on our impact. So, now, once you've completed this process on this side, you can go ahead and repeat these same steps on your other side. And also remember to refer to manufacturer-specific torque settings for all of your hardware. All righty, guys, that about wraps up our review and install of our C&L CX2 Rear Shock for your '94 to '04 Mustang, excluding the '99 to '04 Cobra. Thanks for watching, and as always, for everything Mustang, keep it right here at americanmuscle.com.
