What's up, guys? Stephanie with AmericanMuscle.com, here with these upgraded Halfshaft Axle Assemblies from The Driveshaft Shop for 2015 and up Mustangs. The upgraded halfshafts are going to be a good option for any S550 owner that's worried about running into trouble with the factory halfshafts. Have you been hitting the drag strip at all? Or even if you've just been keeping an eye on what's been going on, then you're probably aware that the S550 stock halfshafts are a weak point, and they need to be upgraded, even if you currently have minimal mods. All it really takes is some time with a drag radial, and you're out of the lanes or off the streets until you're fixed up. DSS gives you two options for the 8.8 IRS Rear, depending on what you need in a halfshaft. The first upgrade over a stock is actually going to be these halfshafts here that are rated up to 800 horsepower, so you have a lot of room to grow into these if you plan on some more mods down the road. And let's face it, more mods is usually always an option. The other option from DSS are halfshafts that are rated up to 1400 horsepower if 800 isn't enough for you, and you're building something serious. There are some pretty cool things going on with both of these options, though, since DSS pretty much upgraded every component of the halfshaft. And I'm going to try not to geek out too much here, but I'll start with the material that's used for the center bars. This is a 300M alloy steel, which is a modified steel that has a high hardenability, strength, and toughness. Another cool thing here is that the center bars are done with a C&C spline rolling process. DSS did this because rolling the spline instead of using material cutaway is a way of compressing and forging the spline making it stronger. Next is the whole CV area, from the billet CV mounts to the joints themselves, to the billet chromoly cages and raises, and even an upgraded grease and boot, high durometer neoprene boot to be exact. Now all of this is a lot of technical talk, but basically, these are some seriously beefy halfshafts that are made to handle abuse, and this isn't coming from just me. There are some record holding cars out there that are testing these products. These are a couple pounds heavier than the factory halfshafts, so they do cause a small weight gain, but I think that the benefits outweigh the weight gain here. Something like this is needed in order to be reliable on the street, or at the dragstrip, or if there's a lot of hard driving going on. So looking at price, the 800 horsepower rated halfshafts are going to cost just under $600, and if you want to go a step up from that and hit up the 1400 horsepower option, you're looking at about $200 more. Ford racing is the only other company out there right now that is competing with the DSS halfshafts, and they do have a couple of different features, so feel free to check those out too, but they are more expensive. The install can be considered difficult with this one, and I'm going to call it a three out of three wrenches on the scale. I would take this to a shop for the install if you don't have any prior experience in this area since it does involve a lot of work. But if you do decide to tackle this yourself, a lift and a second set of hands can go a long way in helping you with this. You will need a handful of different sockets, wrenches, and miscellaneous tools, as well as a torque wrench, and you can plan on about an hour or two per side, depending on if you have some help, and are working off of a lift or not. Wrapping things up, the DSS Halfshaft Axles for the S550 Mustang are a beefy upgrade over the factory halfshafts when we look at both materials and construction. They're one of the only upgrades that are currently available, and they're rated at either 800 or 1400 horsepower. I'd suggest checking these out more online and seeing what you think for yourself. I'm Stephanie, and for all things Mustang, keep it right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

Performance Upgrade. If your S550 Mustang is heavily modified, your stock half shafts might be too weak to take the additional punishment. But after installing Axle Half Shafts from The Driveshaft Shop you will be sure to get all your Pony's power and torque firmly planted to the pavement - where it belongs. The Driveshaft Shop half shafts are designed to handle up to 800 horsepower at the rear wheels.

Superior Quality. Using their time-tested dependable 108mm CV joints that has a full 300m Billet Chromoly cage, The Driveshaft Shops Axle Half Shafts center bar is constructed from Ovaco 300M alloy steel for superior strength and features cold-formed rolled splines which are much stronger than standard cut splines. All this along with Neo HPCC1 grease and higher durometer Neoprene boots means these axles can handle just about anything you can throw at them.

Application. This Passenger Side Axle Half Shaft from The Driveshaft Shop is specifically designed for use on the 2015-2019 S550 Mustangs that are equipped with the stock 8.8" Independent Rear Suspension (IRS), including V6, EcoBoost and GT models. Sold individually.

So I have a whipple stage 2 sc. It aww ill make 730rwhp roughly when tuned properly,, will these be ok, or should I go with the next upgtaded shafts??? Please advise. Scott z

        • As long as you plan on keeping your car around that amount of power these shafts would be fine. However, if you plan to keep going we would recommend getting the next step up.

Anything else I need for the install? Or is it a direct replacement. Thank you

        • The The Driveshaft Shop Half-Shaft Axle Upgrade is a direct replacement for the factory half shafts and do not require anything additional for installation. Each Half-Shaft is sold separately and would need to purchase the right side as well. Down below I will include a link to an installation guide for the ford performance half-shafts: https://performanceparts.ford.com/download/instructionsheets/FordInstShtM-4130-M.pdf

Is it considered ok to just replace the driver side LH , instead of replacing both ? since the driver side is the side that's always failing.

        • It is strongly recommended to install both sides when changing them to ensure both sides are evenly balanced. We do not recommend only upgrading one side of the half-shafts.

Can the axles length be custom made for our application.

        • The Driveshaft Shop Half-Shaft Axle Upgrade which rate to 800 HP will only be available in the factory length. At this time we do not have custom lengths available.

            Holding 720hp just fine!

They went in without a hitch. They Perform excellent. The only problem is I'm creeping up to that 800hp mark. Let's see how much they will really hold. These went on a 2016 Mustang GT Premium w/ The performance package. P1X Procharger w/ a 3.4 pulley. 14lbs of boost 720hp 552tq @ 5500altitude on 91 pump gas.

Definitely felt more heavy duty than the stocks. Also after a few play around launches, could be in my head but I felt like my car handled the torque a lot better and more sturdy. Not hard to install. Just an NA engine for now. Handles just fine.

Got them back they told me that there was nothing wrong with them. Tried to install again they still only went in 3/4 of the way. Contacting DSS again to find out what is going on.

            Beefier 1/2 shafts

Its a good thing to have a stock car make so much power that its able to snap its stock, hollow (yes, OEM ones are hollow), and wimpy 1/2 shafts. Its also a bad thing, I mean come on Ford, why give us wimpy hollow one's? If you are planning on running a drag radial or slick, you'll need these, even if you're just tuned or staying around stock power levels. Yes, the stock one's will break like a toothpick if you get traction, and yes, if you wanna make your car truly go fast, you'll need these. Install on my '18 took less than 3 hours for both sides, I also replaced the wimpy stock vertical links at the same time. These 1/2 shafts are noticeably heavier than stock, but making the swap is pretty straightforward and easy, its all unbolting stuff. I recommened watching an install video for all the torque specs that you will need once putting everything back together. I highly recommened these beefier 1/2 shafts if you plan on racing or running a DR or slick.

            Poor quality control

My SC GT broke the right side shaft on its 3rd trip down the local track. Contacting DSS I was told there were some made with faulty steel. After a $300 additional deposit, Im waiting for a new CV joint so that I can rebuild the shaft myself, and pray the other 3 joints don't also fail. Great service.

            Peace of mind

Having a boosted car, I understood these shafts were the most likely source of failure once I actually get traction and push it. I didn’t believe I’d be capable of installing them, but referring to a couple of how-to videos and taking my time, i did it! The second side went much much faster and I now believe I’m ready for my first track day!!

            Easy half shaft install.

This install was not difficult at all. I used a jack and jack stand. I had no help and completed each side in 1 1/2 hours. A few words of advice, use a pick to clean the threads on everything. There will be factory thread lock left in various parts. The video shows to use a pry bar to separate the half shaft from the differential. I pulled it a few times and the force separated it for me. Make sure you get a deep socket for the half shaft nut. I had a regular size socket and had to buy a new one. I also made it a point to double check to make sure the Allen bolts were right before the install. The factory shaft looked bigger and beefier than the new one. The new ones look well built. In the picture the stock shaft is the dirty one.
