with the hood pin kit should you still use the stock hood latch?

    • I did not. My wife broke my handle and the factory latch did not function properly. So I removed it and just used the pins. Keep in mind your hood can be opened without anyone getting inside your car once the hood latch is removed.

What size drill bit do i use for this kit?

    • It is recommended that you use both a 1/8 inch drill bit to start the holes and a 7/8 inch step bit to complete the holes for this Ford Performance Hood Latch and Pin Kit.

Ford racing hood pins, does the bronze piece go under the hood?

    • From the pictures I've seen and from my own install, the bronze parts were nixed entirely. The screws don't even fit in the pre-drilled holes.

Can this kit be used on later generation mustangs if it works with all hoods? Or just through 2004?

    • The Ford Performance Hood Latch and Pin Kit (79-04 All) have confirmed fitment for 1979-2004 Mustangs, however we do have hood latch and pin kits for the new generations.

aftermarket hood? do these work with an aftermarket fiberglass hood? like a 95 cobra r hood? Just concerned with drilling and causing cracking or something.

    • You can definitely drill it. It's just not as error proof as steel or aluminum. If you're worried about chipping the top coat, you can run the drill bit in reverse until the coating is rubbed off, then run the bit forward.

      Good kit, easy install.

I ordered these pins because the metal plate in the replacement hood I bought came loose so it wouldn\'t latch any longer. From what I heard installing these was a pain but I found it to be quite simple and easy with time and patience. This kit is complete and holds the hood down and is very sturdy. I recommend these to anyone who wants functional hood pins.. I give it a 10/10

get this and not the appearance kit!!!

I have an 02 gt, I purchased this kit because I have the cervini's 95 cobra hood and 03-04 terminator front bumper. And if you have this setup or are thinking about this setup I will warn you that the pillars that come up on the bumper in the grille area caused clearance issues with the hood. I had to sand down the hood and the bumper to get it to latch, that being done every once in a blue moon(3 times in 2 years) the hood would unlatch while driving. I plan on installing this kit soon, my only complaint is, that this comes with ZERO instructions. Just hardware, I am far from being mechanically inclined but its always refreshing to peek at instructions with any install. Especially one that requires me to drill holes into a $500 CERVINI'S hood. Extremely pleased with the product, and after years of shopping with American Muscle I couldn't be more disappointed that they would essentially sell and ship me some nuts and bolts in a box and assume I'll figure it out

      • Response from AmericanMuscle

I'm unsure why Ford Racing wouldn't include instructions in their packaging. However, we do have some installation instructions posted on our site to assist with the install. I'd recommend always double checking the Install Tab on our site if a product you receive lacks manufacturer instructions. Hope this helps!

As some have heard the story ........ i experienced the scary situation of having my fiberglass hood(also purchased thru A.M.)fly up at freeway speeds(the hood did not break either)(STRONG A** cowl hood) this along with body work brought me to purchase the Ford Racing hood pin kits.......... they work GGGREAT and I can now have fun knowing i will NEVER ever have to worry about this again........ i will send pictures REALLY soon.......... THANKS American Muscle!

      Thanks Ford

Well, Ford did not set the S197 up for easy install of the pins. I used the pre-drilled holes beside the outside hood bushings on the radiator support. I cut access holes in the support for the bottom nut. It also didn't help that I have a Cervini cowl. (see legend lime mustang in pictures.) I also replaced the locking circle pin with standard hairpins because I've seen the flip over circle kind fail too many times. All in all, it's a great product and really gives your stang a good look. I know it's not fun drilling into your hood but if you're using an appearance kit you're just faking it!

      Great Kit!!

I got this kit because my hood would shake violently on the freeway. After installation, it was like cheap insurance and was a breeze to install, with the right tools. I would recommend this 110%!

      Very Happy

I ordered these hood pins because I dig the historical look of the old muscle cars, and I was having a problem with my hood shaking on the front corners. These hood pins will fit newer models but you have to be patient and precise with your work.

      Highly recommend (multi-reasons)

First off. I have a 96' V6 vert. After 20 years of the hood being opened and shut, the latch actually wore AWAY the metal on the hood making latching impossible. (A small square where the latch would "latch" was a shocking site to see). Choices were either purchasing a new hood or these. Well for the price these won out (and if it didn't work, well then I would go the hood route). Anyways, with little experience in body modifications (because to me that's what this was, drilling into the hood) I found no difficulty and took my time. Took me about 6 hours (I really took my time) and went through the online instructions step by step. My mustang was a bit different then the one in instructions so you may have to improvise how to set the pins in the frame (i actually had to drill slots to get the nut/washer for the bottom part of the hood pin into the frame above the headlights). Make sure you get the step bit that goes up to 7/8's. I was not using it at first, but then got one from a friend and it made life SO much easier. Either buy one for $49 or reach out for one, but don't try without it, it really is worth having it. All and all, it works great, looks great, and have no fear of my hood flying up on me now.

The hood pins help tremendously, the hood is stable now and doesn't shake at high speeds. It really brings out the characteristics in the front of your stang, just be cautious and take your time when drilling the hood.

      posts not long enough

the quality and construction are excellent but the posts need to be about 1'' longer if you are mounting them where the hood bump stops are. i screwed the post as high as i could and still needed about 1/4''. i ended up going to advance auto and buying another set that were 5'' and they fit perfect. i do not recommend this product if you are installing in the normal location.

      Not Quite a Fit

the install guide mentions needing bolts and coupler nuts, and it does. The guide is missing some info, but nothing someone with a little tech-know-how can't figure out. took longer than it should to finish because I didn't realize all the parts and tools required. Hood rides low without extra bolts.

      Looks amazing and works great

Instructions we're straight forward, except where to install the bronze plate. It's supposed to go on the underside of the hood, and the raised section will "guide" the pin through your hood without taking out fiberglass every time. I did have an issue with installing the pin, as it's about .5" - .75" too short to reach through the hood. I welded the two provided nuts together and then welded them to the frame where the hood stops used to be (with JB weld, remember to sand the frame too!) to gain the require height, but it was quite the pain in the butt. Now that they're in I'd say it was worth it, as they look awesome. Now I just have to decide if I like the lanyard look or just the clips...
