Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey, guys, Adam here with americanmuscle.com. Today I'm bringing you a quick overview and installation of the K&N drop-in replacement air filter, which will be fitting all 2015 and newer Mustangs. So in this video, I'll be going over the benefits of adding the K&N drop-in filter to your S-550, and I'll even touch on the materials and construction. I'll top the video off with the install, which I'll let you know upfront gets a one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter, because it really is a simple drop -in replacement. The K&N drop in replacement filter I have here today will be for any 2015 or newer Mustang owner who's looking to pick up a more effective air filter to keep out the harmful elements, while also increasing a slight throttle response difference as well as the acceleration. Now even though the S-550s are relatively new, it's also gonna be for the guys out there who have a high mileage S-550 and it's really just time for a replacement. This is going to be a direct fit replacement for that stock air box filter, and does perform a lot better considering it is a part of the famous K&N construction. So K&N has been making air filters such as this for a very, very long time. And because of that, they're one of the most well-known options on the market and one of the most effective at that. Now with that said, all that K&N construction I'll touch on in just a second. But I do want to point out this is going to be one of the options out there that will be a lot less expensive than picking up an entirely new air box system as a replacement. So instead, this is gonna be for the guys out there who are on a budget and wanna just pick something up really quick and easy in order to get that throttle response and acceleration increase. Now with that said, if you're picking up an after market cold air intake or air box, this option from K&N is not going to be for you. This is specifically designed to work with the stock air box and for the guys out there only looking for an air filter replacement and not an entirely new system. So K&N does claim that this will increase your throttle response and acceleration off the line. But, of course, guys, I don't want you to expect a world of difference when it comes to horsepower and torque gains. I would just expect some single digit increases in that department. Now with that said, you can expect a slight increase in the throttle response, acceleration, even the engine growl, and, of course, the performance as far as keeping out the harmful elements. Now that's all gonna be thanks to the materials and construction that go into this from K&N. K&N does construct this out of layers of specially treated cotton gauze, which are sandwiched between epoxy coated layers of wire mesh. Now in between that, they have a special grade oil, which, of course, is very specific to K&N's process, very unique to their own construction, which then fills in the layers in between the cotton and gauze at each one of their strands. If you are interested in picking up the drop-in replacement air filter for your stock air box, expect to be spending just about 50 bucks, a very reasonably, budget friendly price tag here, significantly less than an entire stock air box replacement. Shifting gears over to the install, if you can even call it that, like I said in the beginning, this one's gonna get a one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter. It's a drop-in replacement filter. It does just exactly that. All you'd have to do is pop open your stock air box, pull out the factory air filter, and drop in the drop-in replacement. Of course, it really is that simple. Just take a minute or two of your time in the driveway at home. Doesn't require any fancy tools and will get the one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter. And just to wrap things up for this overview and install, if you're the owner of a 2015 or newer Mustang and you're looking to swap out your factory air filter for something a bit more effective, or if you've got some high mileage and just need that replacement, you might want to check out the K&N drop-in replacement air filter, which, of course, can be found right here at americanmuscle.com.

Improves Air Flow for More Power. Now you can improve the performance of your 2015-2018 S550 Mustang with a K&N Drop-in Replacement Air Filter. By simply replacing your restrictive stock paper element with a new, high flow cotton gauze K&N filter you will see an increase in power, performance and acceleration - all while still providing excellent air filtration.

Filters out harmful contaminants. This Drop-in K&N Replacement Filter successfully filter's out harmful contaminants with its unique layered design. K&N Air Filters are made up of layers of specially treated cotton gauze that are sandwiched between two epoxy-coated aluminum wire screens for durability. K&N uses a specially formulated grade of oil to treat the cotton gauze layers which causes a tackiness throughout the cotton's microscopic strands creating a powerful filtering media that ensures engine protection.

Washable, Reusable Filter. K&N designed their high flow air filters to be reusable. That means there is no need to buy a new filter every few thousand miles, you can just clean the filter, re-oil it, and save money with a K&N Filter Recharge Kit.

Drop-In Replacement. This K&N Air Filter was designed to be a direct fit drop-in replacement for the original factory air box, with no cutting or trimming required for installation.

Million Mile Limited Warranty. K&N Replacement Air Filters are backed by a Million Mile Limited Warranty when used primarily on paved roads and on vehicles for which they were designed. If one of these products ever fails to provide complete satisfaction, K&N will replace it. Some exclusions may apply, please see manufacturer's warranty for details.

Application. This K&N Air Filter is designed to be a drop-in replacement for the stock air box on all 2015-2018 V6, GT and EcoBoost Mustangs.

What is a safe method of washing this air filter?

RichardC

  • K&N offers a recharge kit which offers their cleaning solution and oil specifically designed for their filters. Their kit provides exact instructions for cleaning and oiling, however the basic instructions are listed below: STEP 1 - Apply air filter cleaner STEP 2 - Rinse your filter STEP 3 - Dry the air filter STEP 4 - Apply oil to filter

Will someone explain to me, other than the obvious buying from a dealer, is Ford charging $500 and one can buy the exact product here for $50 ? Does the dealership tune it? Just curious and needed to ask someone who is smarter about this than me!

Michael

  • Yes, the $500 package is the K N filter, cal pro adapter, and a custom tune from FRPP. I believe thats just the package cost, they will charge you for installation as well, I'd imagine at least $100, if not $300, to do it. However, you will get a FRPP 3yr 36,000mile warranty (from date of manufacture, I believe) if Ford or an ASE certified technician does the install.

Will this make my check engine light or any other service light go off?

HaydenH

  • This K&N Drop-In Replacement Air Filter is a direct performance replacement and will not cause any check engine light or service light illuminate on your Mustang. K&N has engineered this filter to provide maximum efficiency and decrease restriction within the intake system without causing the vehicle function improperly.

don't waste your money on a CAI!!!

This filter worked awesome! I've been using these filters for 25 years on almost every vehicle I've owned. I honestly think that with this V6 mustang it has made the most noticeable difference. It picked up .2 in my 0-60 and .3 on my 1/4 mile. These numbers were obtained on the same tank of gas and in the same location. Best bang for the buck!!!

    K N drop in filter

Added the KandN drop in performance filter last night and a lot of good results this am on the drive to work. Throttle response is 50 better and it pulls a lot stronger thru out the rpm range. Previously when the motor was cold there was a small stumble around 2300 rpms and that is now gone. Exhaust note is deeper. Gas mileage seemed to be higher but time will tell. Lastly, you save $ by not having to purchase the factory paper filter.

    Buy dry

This product will cost you more than 50 bucks. Put another 160 bucks towards a mass air flow sensor. You might get away with a cleaning of the sensor, but mine wasn't that lucky. The oil in the filter is the problem.

    Nice for the money.

Can't say I noticed any power difference but the h/pipe and axle back seem a little louder. I can say over the last few tanks of gas my average went up between .5 to 1mpg. It's calculated on my app not the car when I enter full ups and I take the same route to work daily so I would guess it's a accurate amount. I don't care much about mileage as I do about the filter anyway. The kandn does filter better than paper IMO and the fact I can clean and oil it rather than throw it away is also a bonus. I have used these on all my cars for years and always had good luck. Some drop ins and some full CAI but never had a problem with the filters.

This drop in filter is a definite improvement over the stock filter. I can definitely feel a difference.it has smoothed out the acceleration and the throttle seems more responsive.the kandn is also a plus because it can be cleaned and reused.

    Nice upgrade, worth the money!

I installed this on my V6 because I didn't want to drop $300 on a CAI, this added some pep, added a little volume to the intake, and it just looks like it flows a ton more air than stock. Definitely worth the money

Cheap way to get more air into your S550.

Just dropped in the KandN airfilter, and drove over to Walla Walla for Spring Wine release. I did notice improved performance driving my 2015 Stang GT with PP in just the normal drive setting. Throttle response was simular to the Sport setting. What I was surprised to find was that the Ford Racing Touring muffler by Borla woke up at 60 mph on the freeway. Mpg also went up on cruise control. What's not to like for $50.

Bought this because I am not sold on the hype behind CAI's. The factory intake looks just like the Roush CAI and AIRAID. I dropped in the KandN filter and I can tell that my ecoboost is breathing better and responds quicker to the accelerator. Happy with the purchase and easy on the wallet.

Fits perfectly, added some gas mileage and with my Corsa exhaust it seems to have made it a little louder which is always a plus! If you aren't willing to get the full cold air intake setup with a tune, this a good way to go till you are ready!

    Great air filter.

It seems almost half the thickness of the oem paper filter. Didn't really feel any hp gains or notice an increase in mpg on a non tuned GT. This is just a money saver instead of buying paper filters every season.
