    Review & Installation Video

    Review & Install Video

What's up, guys? Stephanie with americanmuscle.com, and this is my review and an install of the MBRP Race Series Cat-Back Exhaust, fitting 2011-2014 GT Mustangs. We're gonna be talking about a few different things with this exhaust today. But mainly we'll talk about the sound of the cat-back and the install. The install for this is easy. It's a one out of three wrenches in the difficulty meter, since cat-backs simply bolt right up, but I'll get more into that later. The MBRP Race Series Cat-Back is gonna be a good option for the S197 owners out there that are looking for a deep sounding system that isn't over the top or too loud. So this is a deep sounding cat-back that doesn't have much raspiness, and it sounds different than a lot of other cat-backs that are out there right now. MBRP has included their Race series mufflers, and this set-up is gonna give a sound that's like the MBRP Street Cat-Back, but with more volume, as you guys already heard from the sound clips. So MBRP has a few options when it comes to the Race Cat-Back for the S197 GT. They make this cat-back in stainless steel, aluminized, which is the version that we have here today, and aluminized with black tips. Now, they are all are gonna sound the same, of course, but they will change slightly in price. But I'll talk more about that later. And keep in mind that you also have the option of the Street Cat-Back on top of the Race Cat-Back. And the difference is gonna be in the sound. The Street and Race Cat-back are similar in sound, but the Street Cat-Back is quieter than the Race Cat-Back. But I wouldn't really say that the Street Cat-Back is quiet in the grand scheme of things, because it has some volume for sure. So this is a three-inch system that can work with both the stock or an aftermarket mid-pipe. So you are seeing a bump up in size here with the MBRP system. What's gonna make this cat-back different from the rest is going to be the mufflers. Like I said earlier, MBRP has the Race mufflers on this system, which are a lot like the Street series mufflers, but just less reined in. And I'm sure you picked up on this when you heard the sound clips earlier. These are straight-through mufflers, but they still give a tuned type of sound. And I know you can hear that this cat-back is deeper than the factory exhaust, and even as the RPMs start climbing, this is able to keep the deepness in tone. I keep mentioning this, but the Street Cat-Back is gonna sound along the same lines of this cat-back, but just quieter. So if you really like the Race Cat-Back from MBRP, but it's just a little too loud for you, then the Street Cat-Back will be an excellent choice for you. This cat-back, on the other hand, gives a smooth sound. And I didn't hear any sound distortion. There is a little bit of popping on diesel from the higher RPMs, but I don't think it takes away from the sound of this cat-back. It just adds to it, because it isn't over the top. And even though this cat-back does have some volume to it, there's no interior drone. You almost don't even notice that there's an aftermarket exhaust on the car at cruising speeds. So that means you won't have any trouble having a conversation or listening to the radio on a highway. So you won't have to worry about dealing with drone on trips. Overall, if you're looking for a louder, deep sounding system, then this could be a good option for you. This has a powerful sound to it, and it does have a deep growl to it as well. While it's not the loudest of the aftermarket options, it's still pretty loud. So I'm gonna give it a solid three out of five on the loudness scale. Cat-backs, it really all depends on what you're looking for, and luckily there are quite a few options out there. So like I mentioned earlier, MBRP gives you three different options when it comes to the Race Cat-Back. This is the aluminized steel version, which is gonna be the most budget-friendly of the three options, costing between $400 and $500. Then there's the black-tipped version, which is gonna cost about $600, and the stainless steel version, which costs between $500 and $600. But there are benefits of going with a powder-coated, or better yet, the stainless steel version, especially if your car is a daily driver. These are gonna give you a little bit more corrosion resistance. When it comes to the install, you're gonna be looking at an easy one out of three wrenches in the scale when we look at difficulty. This is considered a direct bolt-on item, so you won't need to cut anything or modify anything to get it installed. All that you're really gonna need is a socket set, and a lift would certainly make things easier, but the job can be done on jack stands as well. Gonna be removing the exhaust from the mid-pipe back, so an extra set of hands can make things easier for you here. You'll be moving the rear hangers to the new cat-back, so I'd recommend taking them off with the factory exhaust when you drop it. It will just make the swap a little bit easier. The whole cat-back can be dropped as one big piece, which is why an extra set of hands can help here. When you go to install your new set-up, it will probably be easiest to leave everything loose and to have it all lined up and then tighten it down. Cat-back does come with new clamps for you, so you don't have to worry about picking those up. You can figure on spending about an hour or two from start to finish to get all this done. Overall the MBRP Cat-Back is a great option for those looking for a deep sound, but not wanting a system that's gonna be too loud. This is a three-inch cat-back that comes complete and is a direct bolt-on install that requires no cutting. You can check this cat-back out online some more for yourself. And for all things Mustang, keep it right here at americanmuscle.com.

I was wondering if I can install just these cat back exhaust pipes with the 3in dual axle mbrp black muffler deletes, if I was to buy both separate and pair together?

    BrandonL

    • The MBRP Race Series Cat-Back Exhaust would be compatible with the MBRP 3 in. Muffler Delete Axle-Back Exhaust, though you would essentially be purchasing two sets of mufflers.

Will this work fine for my 2012 v6? custom piping and welding isn't and issue and neither are hangers, etc. Only reason I ask is because there isn't much of a selection for the v6's, and the 3' with the black coating is exactly what I want. Worst case scenario is custom piping, right?

    Tristan37

    • The V6 mustangs from 2011-2014 were equipped with smaller 2.5" exhaust. They will not match up exactly and a custom adapter or welding may be able to adapt the the kit to make it work but we will not be able to guarantee fitment for this kit on a 2012 V6.

      Cleanest Sound

I purchased this for my 2012 5.0 build and man does it sound great...paired with Pypes Off Road X pipe deep throaty tone. Just remember you Cannot do this with a pair of jack stands needs to be done on a lift. As always thanks to A.M. for providing great service and quality products.

      Fantastic!

Purchased this for a 2011 GT. Everything installed perfectly without any modifications. The only thing that was a little sketchy is the bolt and nut that secures the tips. It is a nut that is welded to the tip and took a little bit of time to get everything to line up. I put everything on and then attached the tips, which was a little difficult to tighten properly. May take the extra time to get it all lined up, get the tips on and then remove and tighten. The rest of the system bolted up just fine. I have Kooks long-tubes and x-pipe so I had to modify the ends of the tubes to fit since they appear to be fabricated to bolt up to factory equipment. The exhaust note is amazing! just loud enough to get attention but not so loud that it sounds bad. Nice deep tone. Highly recommended - can't beat the bang for your buck.

      Aggressive and Deep

Loud start up but idles very deep and aggressive. On a 1-10 scale loudness I'd rate it an 8. There is drone from around 1700 RPMs - 2000 RPMs but tolerable. This will have people staring at you when you pull up and driving by. The fitment was good, the shop had trouble aligning the passenger side but I personally don't care its not bad. There is popping and cracking when you let off the gas pedal but its just mean af. No rasp at all. Do know that it CAN be installed with jack stands, I've had people say that you either need to drop the rear axle or lift the car pretty high (19 inches from the front and 28 from the rear) thats from the ground to center of the tire. All in all I love the sound this gives and would highly recommend. Different from the rest and the with the price being low its a no brainer.

      Great Exhaust System

This exhaust looks and sounds great!! Great bang for your buck, one of the least expensive cat-back out there. Its been installed on my car for about a year. I commute to work everyday about 30 minutes each way, so the one thing I might change is to get the Street Series rather than Race Series.

      Great value for the price!

They look great and sound great. The only issue I had was fittement I had to cut and weld so they would fit the stock exhaust clamps but for that price who cares.

Love the way it sounds. Wife has no complaints with the noise in the cabin. Does go much easier with a lift. Time was right at an hour but did not rush.

      MBRP race series catback

When I took off inny 2014 mustang gt I fell in love with this exhaust, it sounds unforgiving and ungodly! Not so unforgiving that it becomes annoying inside the cabin...total different sound the many other mustang you will run into, I'm actually about to go to work right now so the neighbors will be awake in about 10 minutes. Light drone in low rpm's, Got this installed at a local muffler shop in SoCal, took about 30 minutes. bottom line this upgrade woke up my car and the dead, everyday it puts a smile on face when I drive and that's how life is suppose to be.

      Coyote howlin' loud

I installed this on my 14 track pack all black mustang and it has been a head turner since. Low rpm rumble and howls when you stomp it. Easy install if your have a lift. Next to impossible if you don't due to the over axle pipes. The black tips fit perfect with the contour of the car too.

      Best mod yet!

OK, First off I have to thank AM for great service! And thank you MBRP for making great exhaust videos for everyone! By far I have the deepest exhaust of my buddies with 13-14 GTs. it’s not the loudest but IMO it’s the best of both worlds. Drone is minimal, but I've also grown up around open headers and straight pipes. Either way, this exhaust took about 1 hour with a 2 post lift and a friend helping. Instructions (pictures) were hard to see but with any mechanical know how you will be fine. Install was easy and everything lined up the first time! Very quality made system! And when I turned that key for the first time after install, I was ear to ear smile!!! The drive home from my buddies shop was amazing! Never turned on the radio, just listened to my baby! Great system and great sound! Sounds like a real Mustang now!

      GREAT SOUND GREAT FIT

i love it sounds so good and looks just as good. i ordered the GT kit but when it showed up the box said GT500 all the pieces are the same but it has 4.5 inch tips and i wanted the bigger tips anyway so win for me. very easy install for me but i am a ford tech with a lift and air tools. i installed at the same time i installed the ford racing handling pack so it only took me like 45 min to install with all the rear suspension out. i love that i received the GT500 kit with larger tips they fill the cut out perfect and i installed them to match the contour of the valance instead of straight up and down. i got the black finish because my car is black and it looks amazing with black tips. I add some pics to this page as well showing the tips fitment in the cutouts

      Sick sound

I didn't really notice an increase in power but the exhaust note is awesome. My neighbors probably hate me in the mornings, the cold start is loud. I think they will get over it. I recommend getting this exhaust.

      Looks good sounds better!!!

I have a 2013 gt everyone around here has flowmaster exhaust so i was looking for a sound no one around here has heard. After listening to thousands of sound clips i decided on the MBRP race cat back with black tips to accent the ignot silver. Looks great and sounds better. I'm mechanically challenged so i had Lone Star Mufflers install it for me and it took them about 30 minutes or so. The hardest part they had was getting the stock exhaust out of the hangers so plan for that to take some time. Fit and finish is great but it is a really loud cat back so if loudness is an issue yo might want to get the street system. I'm pleased with what i got but if i had to buy it again i would purchase the street system.Jimmy
