    Review & Install Video

Hey guys, Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, here with my quick review of the MMD bolt on hood strut kit, available in your choice of either black or chrome, fitting your 2015 and newer Mustang. So the bolt on kit from MMD should appeal to just about every S550 owner out there for the simple reason of cleaning up the engine bay by removing that factory hood prop. Now it's a simple product that serves a purpose and does so on the cheap, guys, as the black option's coming in under $100. The chrome option's going to be slightly more, but both options are currently the most affordable hood strut option on the site here at AM. So why would you want to ditch that factory prop rod in the first place? Well, like I just talked about, guys, it does make for a much more clean appearance under the hood. So if you're big into the show scene, this would make a great addition to your ride. But even if you're not, even if you're just a casual enthusiast, occasional drag racer, or if you just like wrenching in the first place, the hood strut kit from MMD will make life a lot easier. As far as the construction goes, well, again, as you can see, there's really not a whole lot to talk about here, guys, a couple of stamped steel brackets and the hood struts themselves, making for a pretty simple package overall. Color-wise, here's what you're going to be looking at. Again, the matte black powder coat, going to offer more of that OE look, it's going to cost you a little less when compared to the chrome or nickel-plated option, going to offer a little bit more flash, cost you a little bit more in the process. Now it is worth pointing out here, guys, that you can use the MMD kit with both your factory and after-market hoods, but just use caution when using them on lighter hoods, as these hood struts are pretty powerful and it might come up on you a little quicker than before. As the name suggests, this is a bolt on hood strut kit, meaning there's no drilling or permanent modification needed whatsoever. So, as a result, an easy one out of three wrenches on my difficulty meter. A socket set and about an hour's worth of your time is really all you're going to need here. I will say it wouldn't be a bad idea to have an extra set of hands on hand before getting started as you do have to unbolt one side of the hood at a time to get this thing installed, but nevertheless, it still can be done on your own if need be. All right, so I think we all can agree that Ford really did drop the ball by not installing these things on the newer Mustangs in the factory. With that said, the MMD option here will be an affordable solution to your prop rod problem, and you can grab your set here at AmericanMuscle.com.

A Prop Rod, Really? It is really hard to believe that Ford is still equipping their all new S550 Mustangs with an old style prop rod. But now you can add the modern convenience and clean good looks of hood struts to your late model Pony with a set of Modern Muscle Design Hood Struts available from AmericanMuscle.

Style And Strength. Designed to get rid of that ugly prop rod, this set of two powerful yet sleek MMD gas struts not only makes opening your Pony's hood much easier, but they also hold it securely in place. Made from lightweight steel and aluminum, they feature a chrome and nickel plated finish to give your engine bay a much cleaner appearance.

No Drilling Required. The stamped steel brackets included in this MMD kit are designed to bolt into the existing mounting holes in the hood so there is no drilling required for installation. Struts can be installed on factory hoods as well as aftermarket hoods that use the factory bolt location. If your aftermarket hood is lighter than the factory hood, use caution when opening the hood due to the power of the strut.

Application. This Modern Muscle Design Hood Strut Kit is specifically designed for use on the 2015 to 2017 Ford Mustangs, including the V6, EcoBoost, and GT models. Does not fit Shelby GT350's.

Technical Note. The MMD Bolt on Hood Strut Kit does not fit European Spec Mustangs.

I currently have an MMD hood scoop on my factory GT hood, it makes the good quite a bit heavier than stock. Are the hood struts strong enough to hold the hood open with the added weight of the hood scoop?

G'day, I read on the MMD chrome unit, that it doesn't fit RH drive. Do you know why it wouldn't work on a RH drive vehicle?

    • The design of the RHD models sold in Europe and the rest of the world has slightly different mounting points for everything under the hood due to the steering components being on the opposite side. Unfortunately, due to this, the MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit would not be good fits for those cars.

I installed without any issues. Aligned and worked perfectly at first. After maybe six or less hood lifts, they will not hold up the hood. I cannot trust them now. My question is, did I cause this problem by adding a very small amount of white lithium grease to the ball joints and sliding metal shafts that go into the hydraulic section? I can not think of why this would have a deliterious effect on the function, but I'll accept the consequences if I screwed things up. Thx. 1 answer

      So far so good!

This MMD Hood Strut Kit was a pretty easy install. No cutting the battery cover and no drilling. The only problem I ran into was readjusting the hood. It proved to be a bit fidgety, but with a bit of patience and my son helping as an extra set of hands, I was able to get it completed in about an hour. I color matched to brackets to match my car. The hood raises with ease and pops right on up. I've read other reviews on other struts that seem to say. Not these.

      Easy Lift

Easy install, took me less than an hour. I would just add to the instructions a small note to pull the pins out of the strut heads before trying to install them onto the ball mount. Looks great along and frees up the space in front of the engine bay, where you don't have to dodge the hood prop now.

      Not designed well

Pro: 1. Opens the hood without prop rod. Cons: 1. The hole in the fender bracket does not line up properly with the bolt hole. 2. Once the hood brackets are installed, the hose on the underside of the hood cannot be reconnected because it covers up the hole in the hood for this, so it just dangles. 3. The hood struts are connected with a pin that is difficult to deal with and wasn’t outlined in the instructions. 4. Once it’s finally together, the hood gaps were not right. I spent a ton of time trying to adjust, but it seemed that these hold the hood too high in the back. I eventually took these off and put the hood back the way it was. Bottom line: stick with the prop rod or get something else, these aren’t worth the frustration.

Review from MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit - Black (15-17 GT, EcoBoost, V6)

looks great in the box, terrible on the car

Purchasing this seemed like a no brainier. Why our cars come without hood struts it beyond me. The kit appears well made and the install simple enough. Unfortunately that's where my praise ends for this kit. I installed the kit per the instructions and readjusted the hood but it still did not sit correctly. I also had the issue of the windshield washer hose that was now loose, but we will get back to that later. After monkeying with the hood longer that i wanted to I had a friend who worked at a boy shop assist me in aligning the hood. After three more tries we realized the struts were actually flexing the hood. They were causing the hood to raise up at the rear and bow in the center because it was held at the front latch. Once we removed the struts without touching the hinge bolts the hood now sat perfectly aligned. The only thing I can figure is the struts are too strong and actually flex the hood. I can not return the kit because if you remember we had a dangling hose for the washer. I didn't want it to get pinched so I drilled a hole in the mount so the house mounted to the strut mount as it would the hood. This is something that should have come from the manufacturer. Every single car has that hose. 30 seconds to make the mod I did and have a professional look not a dangling hose. I see no fix for the struts though. Weaker struts may or may not hold up that hood. Now they are on my shelf and I am back to a hood prop and I am just out the money. Lesson learned i guess.

MMD Bolt on hood strut kit

I had to remove a portion of the lower pivot mount to properly fit it to the fender because the fender panel supports block both sides from fitting. After assembly as I lowered the hood the drivers side rod pivot broke off the lower mount. The river job holding the pivot in place failed. This kit is not worth the effort or money. Go with the more expensive Ford Racing kit it is a direct bolt on. You do not have to realign the hood after the install.

      Too Strong

Fitment was great, and install was easy. Although MMD forgot to include a step in the install of taking the locking pins out of the connector holes before fitting them on, and then replacing them afterwards. My biggest gripe is that these things are just too strong. If you do not hold onto your hood while they are pulling it up, it's a rather rough ride that I can imagine would not be good for your hood hinges after some time.

It would have taken under an hour if I didn't drop the ratchet behind the fender. (And a hood bolt) Boom. Watch the little cotter pin clips that disappear when you drop them. Review from MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit - Black (15-17 GT, EcoBoost, V6)

      OK, but not great...

Overall the design and installation of this product is OK, but here are three criticisms I have: 1) The ones I received had the ball studs painted, not as shown on the factory pictures. This must be removed for a good fit of the strut ends. 2) The strut ends should have the "pins" removed prior to installation so as not to bend them when installing the struts. This should have been mentioned in the installation guide. 3) I actually notched the lower strut mount to fit around the fender brace. If I didn't, one of the sides would not align with the fender bolt hole, and it makes for a better looking installation. This requires painting of the bracket after modification. Pay attention to the warning about the hood alignment as mine moved quite a bit in spite of me being careful to prevent that from happening. I removed the hood latch loop so I could allow the hood to rest in place while I realigned it. Then I reinstalled the loop when the alignment was complete. Good Luck...
