    Review & Install Video

Hey guys, Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, here with my quick review of the MMD bolt on hood strut kit, available in your choice of either black or chrome, fitting your 2015 and newer Mustang. So the bolt on kit from MMD should appeal to just about every S550 owner out there for the simple reason of cleaning up the engine bay by removing that factory hood prop. Now it's a simple product that serves a purpose and does so on the cheap, guys, as the black option's coming in under $100. The chrome option's going to be slightly more, but both options are currently the most affordable hood strut option on the site here at AM. So why would you want to ditch that factory prop rod in the first place? Well, like I just talked about, guys, it does make for a much more clean appearance under the hood. So if you're big into the show scene, this would make a great addition to your ride. But even if you're not, even if you're just a casual enthusiast, occasional drag racer, or if you just like wrenching in the first place, the hood strut kit from MMD will make life a lot easier. As far as the construction goes, well, again, as you can see, there's really not a whole lot to talk about here, guys, a couple of stamped steel brackets and the hood struts themselves, making for a pretty simple package overall. Color-wise, here's what you're going to be looking at. Again, the matte black powder coat, going to offer more of that OE look, it's going to cost you a little less when compared to the chrome or nickel-plated option, going to offer a little bit more flash, cost you a little bit more in the process. Now it is worth pointing out here, guys, that you can use the MMD kit with both your factory and after-market hoods, but just use caution when using them on lighter hoods, as these hood struts are pretty powerful and it might come up on you a little quicker than before. As the name suggests, this is a bolt on hood strut kit, meaning there's no drilling or permanent modification needed whatsoever. So, as a result, an easy one out of three wrenches on my difficulty meter. A socket set and about an hour's worth of your time is really all you're going to need here. I will say it wouldn't be a bad idea to have an extra set of hands on hand before getting started as you do have to unbolt one side of the hood at a time to get this thing installed, but nevertheless, it still can be done on your own if need be. All right, so I think we all can agree that Ford really did drop the ball by not installing these things on the newer Mustangs in the factory. With that said, the MMD option here will be an affordable solution to your prop rod problem, and you can grab your set here at AmericanMuscle.com.

A Prop Rod, Really? It is really hard to believe that Ford is still equipping their all new S550 Mustangs with an old style prop rod. But now you can add the modern convenience and clean good looks of hood struts to your late model Pony with a set of Modern Muscle Design Hood Struts available from AmericanMuscle.

Style And Strength. Designed to get rid of that ugly prop rod, this set of two powerful yet sleek MMD gas struts not only makes opening your Pony's hood much easier, but they also hold it securely in place. Made from lightweight steel and aluminum, they feature a chrome and nickel plated finish to give your engine bay a much cleaner appearance.

No Drilling Required. The stamped steel brackets included in this MMD kit are designed to bolt into the existing mounting holes in the hood so there is no drilling required for installation. Struts can be installed on factory hoods as well as aftermarket hoods that use the factory bolt location. If your aftermarket hood is lighter than the factory hood, use caution when opening the hood due to the power of the strut.

Application. This Modern Muscle Design Hood Strut Kit is specifically designed for use on the 2015 to 2019 Ford Mustangs, including the V6, EcoBoost, and GT models. Does not fit Shelby GT350's.

Technical Note. The MMD Bolt on Hood Strut Kit does not fit European Spec Mustangs.

I currently have an MMD hood scoop on my factory GT hood, it makes the good quite a bit heavier than stock. Are the hood struts strong enough to hold the hood open with the added weight of the hood scoop?

    • The MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit is capable of supporting the weight of the stock hood and the MMD Hood scoop.

G'day, I read on the MMD chrome unit, that it doesn't fit RH drive. Do you know why it wouldn't work on a RH drive vehicle?

    • The design of the RHD models sold in Europe and the rest of the world has slightly different mounting points for everything under the hood due to the steering components being on the opposite side. Unfortunately, due to this, the MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit would not be good fits for those cars.

I have a Cervini Stalker hood on my 2015 Mustang, will these fit my hood ?

    • These hood struts were tested to fit only the original position of the factory hood and support the weight of the factory hood. Installing these hood struts on a different aftermarket hood such as the Cervini Stalker hood has not yet been confirmed at this point in time.

passenger side lower bracket will not fit correctly, 10mm bolt will not thread to tighten ...too short?

    • If, during the install of the MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit, one of the bolts isn't tightening, we recommend checking the threads in both the hole and on the bolt to ensure no thread damage has occurred. Bolt length should not be effected by the brackets.

I installed without any issues. Aligned and worked perfectly at first. After maybe six or less hood lifts, they will not hold up the hood. I cannot trust them now. My question is, did I cause this problem by adding a very small amount of white lithium grease to the ball joints and sliding metal shafts that go into the hydraulic section? I can not think of why this would have a deliterious effect on the function, but I'll accept the consequences if I screwed things up. Thx. 1 answer

After installation, I went to close my hood and it would not close the final ~6 inches. After looking into why for a bit, i found that the bracket that mounts to the hood was hitting the strut, hard stopping it from closing. The hood all seemed to be aligned correctly, and i followed the vague instructions, but i was hitting this problem on both sides. Tried twice until I gave up. Any ideas what is going on? Review from MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit - Black (15-17 GT, EcoBoost, V6)

A must for every new mustang

This is my fourth mustang and this is one the first things I have to do. The rod prop is so annoying while working under the hood. My only beef with this strut kit is that you need a helping hand so the hood doesn't move on you and then spend lots of times realigning the hood. Overall highly recommended.

Review from MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit - Black (15-17 GT, EcoBoost, V6)

      First MMD modification

I like the concept of the product and it does what it was intended to do (hold the hood open). The installation took under an hour to complete doing it by yourself. Cons with the kit: The lower strut mounting bracket don't overlap the inter fender correctly it appears to be to narrow which causing the bracket to sit on an angle. The struts are very powerful (which is a good thing), But they cause the hood to open to quickly if you don’t keep a hand on it. It would be nice if there were some type of damper adjustment on the struts to adjust the opening speed.

      Hood strut appearance and mold

Not a complete flush fit. When you put the product on it does not look like a factory install. The base sits off the sides on the inside fender at a weird angle and you have to realign the hood to not factory bolts. It’s a few mm off from original hood bolts.

      Short bolts

Easy install but fender bolt should be replaced with longer one. Used factory bolt and with thickness of new lower plate threads got wiped out even with just a loose tightening. Also cant get good to drop down on driver side after 1 hr of trying to adjust.

Bolt on Hood Struts by MMD

Just installed the MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit on our 2018 Mustang GT. Kudos to Bob and Dave @ Century 3 Automotive in Davie, Florida. Definitely a two person install..........that hood is heavy. Ford should have done this at the factory. We are very pleased with the product. A definite do.

      Fitment poor

These do not fit a 2016 mustang v6 have to drill out a hole for the windshield washer fluid hose that goes into the hood on the passenger side and the bottom brackets that bolt to the fender do not align so have to cut off half of the bracket to get them to fit Figure for 100$ and a part that’s suppose to fit would fit and have everything pre drilled correctly (NOT)

      Could have been made better

When I went to put this on, the top brackets went on fine, but the bottom brackets don't match up with the screw hole on the fender, still I tried to make it work, passenger side I finally got the screen to xatch, but not the driver's side, you'll either have to notch the bracket or try a longer screw, I think I shouldn't have to go through that so I sent it back, the Ford performance hood struts are only $5 more, so I'm going to try them.

      Easy Install, Great Results

It's great to open up the hood and have it lift itself into position and keep it there. It makes for a great hand's free way to show off that monster and make a statement without having to use the factory prop rod! Working on getting all of the AM shrouding for the interior to really finish up the sharpness of the engine compartment.
