Review & Install Video

Hey guys, Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, here with my quick review of the MMD bolt on hood strut kit, available in your choice of either black or chrome, fitting your 2015 and newer Mustang. So the bolt on kit from MMD should appeal to just about every S550 owner out there for the simple reason of cleaning up the engine bay by removing that factory hood prop. Now it's a simple product that serves a purpose and does so on the cheap, guys, as the black option's coming in under $100. The chrome option's going to be slightly more, but both options are currently the most affordable hood strut option on the site here at AM. So why would you want to ditch that factory prop rod in the first place? Well, like I just talked about, guys, it does make for a much more clean appearance under the hood. So if you're big into the show scene, this would make a great addition to your ride. But even if you're not, even if you're just a casual enthusiast, occasional drag racer, or if you just like wrenching in the first place, the hood strut kit from MMD will make life a lot easier. As far as the construction goes, well, again, as you can see, there's really not a whole lot to talk about here, guys, a couple of stamped steel brackets and the hood struts themselves, making for a pretty simple package overall. Color-wise, here's what you're going to be looking at. Again, the matte black powder coat, going to offer more of that OE look, it's going to cost you a little less when compared to the chrome or nickel-plated option, going to offer a little bit more flash, cost you a little bit more in the process. Now it is worth pointing out here, guys, that you can use the MMD kit with both your factory and after-market hoods, but just use caution when using them on lighter hoods, as these hood struts are pretty powerful and it might come up on you a little quicker than before. As the name suggests, this is a bolt on hood strut kit, meaning there's no drilling or permanent modification needed whatsoever. So, as a result, an easy one out of three wrenches on my difficulty meter. A socket set and about an hour's worth of your time is really all you're going to need here. I will say it wouldn't be a bad idea to have an extra set of hands on hand before getting started as you do have to unbolt one side of the hood at a time to get this thing installed, but nevertheless, it still can be done on your own if need be. All right, so I think we all can agree that Ford really did drop the ball by not installing these things on the newer Mustangs in the factory. With that said, the MMD option here will be an affordable solution to your prop rod problem, and you can grab your set here at AmericanMuscle.com.

A Prop Rod, Really? It is really hard to believe that Ford is still equipping their all new S550 Mustangs with an old style prop rod. But now you can add the modern convenience and clean good looks of hood struts to your late model Pony with a set of Modern Muscle Design Hood Struts available from AmericanMuscle.

Style And Strength. Designed to get rid of that ugly prop rod, this set of two powerful yet sleek MMD gas struts not only makes opening your Pony's hood much easier, but they also hold it securely in place. Made from lightweight steel and aluminum, they feature a chrome and nickel plated finish to give your engine bay a much cleaner appearance.

No Drilling Required. The stamped steel brackets included in this MMD kit are designed to bolt into the existing mounting holes in the hood so there is no drilling required for installation. Struts can be installed on factory hoods as well as aftermarket hoods that use the factory bolt location. If your aftermarket hood is lighter than the factory hood, use caution when opening the hood due to the power of the strut.

Application. This Modern Muscle Design Hood Strut Kit is specifically designed for use on the 2015 to 2018 Ford Mustangs, including the V6, EcoBoost, and GT models. Does not fit Shelby GT350's.

Technical Note. The MMD Bolt on Hood Strut Kit does not fit European Spec Mustangs.

I currently have an MMD hood scoop on my factory GT hood, it makes the good quite a bit heavier than stock. Are the hood struts strong enough to hold the hood open with the added weight of the hood scoop?

ShaneN

  • The MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit is capable of supporting the weight of the stock hood and the MMD Hood scoop.

G'day, I read on the MMD chrome unit, that it doesn't fit RH drive. Do you know why it wouldn't work on a RH drive vehicle?

RexE

  • The design of the RHD models sold in Europe and the rest of the world has slightly different mounting points for everything under the hood due to the steering components being on the opposite side. Unfortunately, due to this, the MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit would not be good fits for those cars.

Has anyone had an issue where the driver side bottom bracket just doesn't line up correctly and wont the bolt go in far enough to catch the threads? I can get mine maybe one thread on and then it backs off and comes loose. If you did what did you do to fix this? Also did this pop anyone else's hood up a couple MM? not a huge deal but it bothers me but I know i'm the only one who can see it but my hood is deffly not flush with the fenders anymore.

  • We do apologize however we would not have any hood struts that would work on the RHD drive Mustangs at this time.

Review from MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit - Black (15-18 GT, EcoBoost, V6)

    Stick with your prop rod

The installation sheet tells you to remove the windshield washer tubing for the install. What they don't mention is that you can't put it back-you have to leave it dangling there, ugly! I drilled a small hole to reattach it and make it look factory, but I shouldn't have to. Even worse is the fact that the struts push on the hood enough that to flex it, making a small gap between the hood and fender. If I hadn't drilled a hole in it for my windshield wiper fluid tube I would just return it. Also, I received two passenger side lower brackets, immediately emailed support, never heard back, called them and was told they had to contact the warehouse, and haven't heard back for 3 days.

Review from MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit - Black (15-18 GT, EcoBoost, V6)

    Raises Hood

I ordered this kit because I liked the compactness and simplicity compared to other solutions. Installation was quick and simple, but I'm having a problem. When closed, the hood does not sit flush with the fender at about the mid point. When I disconnect the strut, the hood closes as normal but reconnecting the strut raises the hood above the adjacent fender. I am getting a replacement and will see if it fits differently. Hope so.

Review from MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit - Black (15-18 GT, EcoBoost, V6)

Great bang for the buck and powerful.

As a seasoned mechanic I found these MMD gas struts to be well built, nicely finished, (Black Powder-coat), and easy to install. I also like the fact that there are NO etchings or name brand stickers on any of the parts, they're clean in that respect. Take your time and follow the instructions and you'll have no problem. A second set of hands may make it easier for you to line up the hood when installing. All parts fit as they should. Check the clearance of the hood by closing it slowly and carefully before putting the gas struts in to place and LOOK at the sides and back clearances as you close. Align the hood as needed to maintain original clearance. Be sure to torque to the proper spec's so as not to strip the bolts. Spec's are: Fender bolt - 106 In Lbs or (8.8 Ft Lbs), Hood bolts - 204 In Lbs or (17 Ft Lbs). It took me all of 30 minutes per side working slowly and carefully by myself. Don't forget to hold the hood when opening to prevent hood bounce. These gas struts are NOT progressive, they push the hood open and keep it there. They do not slow down at the end of their travel. Hope this review helps - photos included. Happy Motoring, -v-

Look Ma! No more prop rod!

This item looks great and is easy to install. I needed about 30 min to install the hood struts. The one unclear set is the in stall of the struts to the mounts. You need to completely remove the black pin then reinstall it after the rod is in place. Also, a hole in the passenger side mount to replace the windshield wiper clip would perfect this product.

Sure bets the hood prop rod that gets in the way and looks terrible. I would add that the hood rod stay in place and you prop up the pass side also, using a piece of wood. I did mark with pencil the location of the hood mounts before I undid the nuts. I sprayed the nuts with flat black paint and slight touch up after bolting. I found a clip that works for attaching the windshield washer hose to the MMD bracket. Al75

Review from MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit - Black (15-18 GT, EcoBoost, V6)

    A MUST HAVE

Not only does a hood strut kit replace the stock hood holder, it just looks and feels great to be able to pop the hood and watch the hood rise on it's own (make sure to have your hands on it still as these are powerful enough that if left to rise with no resistance such as hands the jerking motion just doesn't feel nice). A very easy install, especially with the included instructions. Just make sure to place the window washer fluid line in a place that can be held up by the strut, and remember to push each socket joint onto the ball joint to the point where you hear or feel it click. Its also advisable to seek a helping hand as to position the hood back in place. 10/10 would recommend for any S550 owner. Note: I have a 2017 mustang in Grabber Blue.

    Excellent mod but not perfect

Install was easy but be very careful as your hood can get misaligned during the install process. Definitley have at least 2 people into install. I really felt after install the hood sits slightly higher where the brackets are mounted underneath the hood but it is barely noticeable. The only negative thing I have to say is you have to find an alternative way to re secure the passenger side windshield washer hose as you have remove the retaining clip to install the bracket. Other than that this is a must have mod!

    Nice!

Had a local help me, everything good, works great, no prop rod any longer, but only problem is hood won't lock when closing, must close it several times to get it to latch, can't get hood to line up after install. Took it to Ford, they want $200 to fix the problem, so I'll look else where.

    "Strut your stuff"

The MMD hood strut kit allows a clean and unobstructed view of what makes the wheels turn without a rod pressed against your face. You might also consider" the rod" (1950's style engineering) being quickly misplace and the hood dropping down on your head. An easy and inexpensive add on. Very happy! GVL

Review from MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit - Black (15-18 GT, EcoBoost, V6)

    Nice but not Perfect!

The hood strut kit was nice but the fender bracket uses the same bolt that ford put in, it's soft aluminum, I believe it's made from aluminum so that they well brake off in case of a accident. Anyway, once you install the bracket the bolt is too short and really doesn't bit into the mounting hole and strips way to easy. I had to go and get longer bolts to use. I hope I haven't hurt the brake away feature of the fender since the only bolts I could find were steel bolts. I well try and find some aluminum ones when I get a chance. Other than that the kit is great, had no issues install it and it work great. I believe their the only ones on the market to open with the hood direction and not against it, looks very clean and gives you more room under the hood to work and I didn't have to drill holes in my battery cover like other kits!

    Excellent product-not easy complete installation

Initially easy to install strut brackets and the struts, but the small retaining pins are difficult to put in place when the struts are in place. Visual directions and video are helpful but no explanation on retaining pin installation. Once installed they look great and make raising the hood easy.
