Review & Install Video

Hey, guys, Stephanie with AmericanMuscle.com here with the Modern Billet Retro Style 6-Speed Shift Knob for 2015 and up GT EcoBoost and V6 Mustangs. The shift knob can be a centerpiece of the interior, and it's an area where the driver can almost add some self-expression, if you will, but without totally changing the interior. The Modern Billet Retro Style Shift Knob has almost a nostalgic styling to it, so it would be a good option for drivers looking for that type of style, for the MT82-equipped S550s, but still have the factory shifter handle. It is a classic 8 ball round type of shift knob for those drivers that prefer this over other styles. And while it is a minor mod, the shift knob is one of the connecting pieces between the car and driver, so it needs to be comfortable. So this particular Modern Billet Shift Knob is white with a black, engraved, classic 6-speed shift pattern on top. This shift knob is going to be a little bit different than the other options that are out there, because while this is a pretty simple and classic design, there is a wide range of colors available. So you can either keep it classic style or take a classic style and make it your own. Along with this black on white option, you are also looking at colors like white on black, black on polished, and then you've got your wild colors with a white on red and blue. If you think a white shift knob is going to stand out, then you should check out the pictures of the red and blue shift knobs. But no matter which color you end up choosing, they're all going to have the 6-speed shift pattern, of course, and it's always going to be engraved. They're all styled with inlaid engravings, and the engravings are usually preferred over the other options, like a decal, because then you don't have to worry about fading after use with an engraving. There are a ton of different types of material to choose from when you're looking for a shift knob. The material and finish are definitely something to consider, because different types of material have a different type of feel, and you also have to consider how the material will react to temperature changes, like the heat of summertime or the cold of wintertime. The colored shift knob options are made from a resin compound for strength and durability, and they're not as sensitive to heat or cold as other materials are. The polished knob, on the other hand, is made from a solid billet aluminum. So if you really want that look, then just keep in mind that this material will feel different, have a different weight, and will react to temperature changes. The next thing that should be considered when shopping for a shift knob is size. Now, size is important, because it's going to affect how the shifter feels in your hand, and these particular shift knobs have a one to three-fourths diameter, which is going to be a little bit smaller than some of the other options that are out there and even a little bit smaller than the factory shift knob. So if you're looking for a larger shift knob, then this one may not be it. So these shift knobs are made for the S550s, so they're reverse lockout-compatible. They were specifically designed keeping in mind the pull-up style or reverse lockout mechanism, but they don't leave a large gap between the bottom of the knob and the top of the factory boot, either. As far as price, these shift knobs costs right around $50, and they're actually on the less expensive side when we compare them to the other options that are out there right now, but just by a small margin. There are some more expensive billet aluminum knobs that are available if you prefer the look and feel of those, as well as other options that are not the classic 8 ball style. So the install here is really pretty easy. The shift knob doesn't come with any Loctite, though, and you're probably going to want some, so I'd suggest just picking some up before the install. The shift knob is very easy to access, and you're going to want to start the install by putting the car in reverse first. This will help you get the height of the shift knob without any trouble. The factory shift knob just comes off easily by using the normal [inaudible 00:03:26] rule. And then it's just a matter of putting some Loctite on the threads of the shifter handle, so your new shift knob doesn't back out when you start grabbing gears. Then you take your new shift knob and thread it down into place until it gets tight, but then I'd do one rotation backwards to make sure you're giving enough room for the reverse lockout. You don't want to install the knob and then not be able to get the car in reverse. Just make sure the knob is straight, so it doesn't look goofy later on, and then let it sit so that the Loctite can set. It probably needs about an hour or two to be safe, or an afternoon if you really want to be safe. Overall, this is a one-wrench install on our scale here, and it should take just about five minutes to complete as long as we don't count the set time. Wrapping things up here, the Modern Billet Retro Style 6-Speed Shift Knob is a classic 8 ball style shift knob with a 6-speed shift pattern for the MT82-equipped S550 Mustang that still has the factory shifter handle. It's reverse lockout-compatible, and there are a handful of different color options. But the color version is being made from a resin compound, and the polished version being billet aluminum, and they're all very easy to install. You can check these out more online along with all of your other shift knob options, and for all things Mustang, keep it right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

Nostalgic Styling. Add some cool vintage styling of the 60's to your manual 2015-2017 Mustang with a classic ball style Modern Billet White Shift Knob. This white shift knob features a black embossed 6-speed shift pattern and will look great with any 2015-2017 color scheme.

Reverse Lock-out Compatible. Specifically engineered to work with the S550 Mustang's pull-up style reverse lockout mechanism, this Modern Billet Shift Knob won't leave an ugly gap between the bottom of the knob and the top of the factory shift boot.

High Quality Materials. This 1-3/4" retro inspired shift knob by Modern Billet is CNC Machined from a solid block of white resin compound and finished with a black embossed 6-speed shift pattern. There's no need to worry about paint flaking off in your hand or the shift pattern fading from daily use.

Simple Installation. With its 12mm x 1.25 thread pattern, simply unscrew your old stock shift knob and screw on this new Modern Billet Knob in its place. Swapping out your shift knob couldn't be faster or easier, giving you a big change in only a few minutes.

Application. This Modern Billet White 6-speed Shift Knob is specifically designed to fit all 2015-2017 Mustangs equipped with the MT-82 6-speed manual transmission and the stock shifter handle, including the V6, EcoBoost and GT models.

    Not what I expected

I read the reviews on this shift knob and they were the best out of all the other reviews I have read on the other shift knobs so I bought it and I just got it today and as I was screwing it on and the top pieced just crakced and fell apart. Idk why this happened I thought this was the best shift knob for the money. Im very dissapointed with this I guess ill get the Roush shift knob because you do get what you pay for.

    Dont completely follow instructions

The instructions tell you to tighten the nut provided all the way down, however you have to tighten it enough to leave the reverse lock out (2015 ) room and for the knob itself to align. Not a big deal at all, just something I had to figure out myself.

    Modern Billet Retro Shift Knob

This item was exactly as advertised. Fitment is excellent and a great addition to the stock shifter that fits without the additional adapter. Took under 5 minutes from unpacking box to installation. Great looking knob for the interior of the 2015 Mustang GT.

Review from Modern Billet Retro Style 6-Speed Shift Knob - Black (15-17 GT, EcoBoost, V6)

    Almost perfect

I purchased this shift knob in black as I prefer the old school look and feel of it to my stock GT knob. It comes with a single nut to adjust height, and it works well enough. However, it doesnt act as a proper jam nut would. I had to use loctite 242 to secure my knob. Id suggest either including two nuts or using a proper jam nut to hold position. Would have rated it a 5 aside from this.

    Fits an ST also

I did some research and discovered that the 15-17 Mustang knobs would fit my Focus ST also. It looks fantastic, and was a snap to install. Adjusting the jamb nut to perfect the pattern alignment only took a few tries...

    Great knob for the price!

At 49.99, you can't go wrong with this knob. It looks and feels like a quality piece. The only thing I'd recommend is not to tighten the nut all the way down like the directions say to do. You will have to leave it a few turns away from all the way down or else you will not be able to put the car in reverse. Took about 20 min to get the knob and nut lined up properly. Overall would buy again.

    Awesome shift knob

This polished shift knob is awesome! Installed in the few minutes and looks great! Slightly larger than the stock knob and feels good in your hand. The aluminum is- cool to the touch in the morning and really sets off the interior of the car. The only problem is that I have to polish my knob quite often.

Modern Billet Retro 6-Speed Shifter 2016 EcoBoost

...I have been trying different shifters for my 2016 EcoBoost and so far this one is the closest to OEM (Size and Shape). Good contrast in colors with the Black Interior of the car. Nice Feel as an Everyday Driver. Worth the $$ and would recommend to anyone for an upgrade to OEM Stock. No time at all to install, just get the set up with the collar for reverse and good to go. Thanks MMD!

Review from Modern Billet Retro Style 6-Speed Shift Knob - Polished (15-17 GT, EcoBoost, V6)

Looks awesome and VERY simple to install!

I bought the polished version of the Modern Billet retro shift knob and it looks great in my 2015 GT. It's hard to tell from the pictures here on AM, but it has a shiny, chrome-like finish. I've uploaded a couple images so you can see how bright it really is. If you're looking for a knob with a brushed or matte appearance, then I suggest choosing something else. As far as the size goes, it's pretty much the same as the stock knob. It took me just three minutes to install. I don't think there's an easier Mustang mod out there. I took off one "Bang for your Buck" star because I felt the price is a bit steep for a simple ball of aluminum, but I'm still glad I bought it. The shine really sets off the interior!

    KISS

Sometimes the simple things go a long way. The stock silver plastic reverse lock on the shifter and stock shifter knob are bit to over done. The retro appearance and simple installation of this billet shifter knob is worth your time. Made from a resin with your color option gloss. Black was my chosen color because it goes with anything.

    Not worth the money!

Broke as I was installing the shift knob. Very poor design. The knob is a two piece build, metal inner threading attached to the cheap white plastic threading. The two threads are glued together, but they are threaded in such a way that when you tighten the shift knob to the shifter you are actually listening and breaking the internal threading that are glued together. If I could post a picture I would, makes for a great visual. Spend the few extra dollars and get the roush or steeda, not this chinsey piece.
