    Review & Install Video

Hey, guys, Stephanie with AmericanMuscle.com here with the Modern Billet Retro Style 6-Speed Shift Knob for 2015 and up GT EcoBoost and V6 Mustangs. The shift knob can be a centerpiece of the interior, and it's an area where the driver can almost add some self-expression, if you will, but without totally changing the interior. The Modern Billet Retro Style Shift Knob has almost a nostalgic styling to it, so it would be a good option for drivers looking for that type of style, for the MT82-equipped S550s, but still have the factory shifter handle. It is a classic 8 ball round type of shift knob for those drivers that prefer this over other styles. And while it is a minor mod, the shift knob is one of the connecting pieces between the car and driver, so it needs to be comfortable. So this particular Modern Billet Shift Knob is white with a black, engraved, classic 6-speed shift pattern on top. This shift knob is going to be a little bit different than the other options that are out there, because while this is a pretty simple and classic design, there is a wide range of colors available. So you can either keep it classic style or take a classic style and make it your own. Along with this black on white option, you are also looking at colors like white on black, black on polished, and then you've got your wild colors with a white on red and blue. If you think a white shift knob is going to stand out, then you should check out the pictures of the red and blue shift knobs. But no matter which color you end up choosing, they're all going to have the 6-speed shift pattern, of course, and it's always going to be engraved. They're all styled with inlaid engravings, and the engravings are usually preferred over the other options, like a decal, because then you don't have to worry about fading after use with an engraving. There are a ton of different types of material to choose from when you're looking for a shift knob. The material and finish are definitely something to consider, because different types of material have a different type of feel, and you also have to consider how the material will react to temperature changes, like the heat of summertime or the cold of wintertime. The colored shift knob options are made from a resin compound for strength and durability, and they're not as sensitive to heat or cold as other materials are. The polished knob, on the other hand, is made from a solid billet aluminum. So if you really want that look, then just keep in mind that this material will feel different, have a different weight, and will react to temperature changes. The next thing that should be considered when shopping for a shift knob is size. Now, size is important, because it's going to affect how the shifter feels in your hand, and these particular shift knobs have a one to three-fourths diameter, which is going to be a little bit smaller than some of the other options that are out there and even a little bit smaller than the factory shift knob. So if you're looking for a larger shift knob, then this one may not be it. So these shift knobs are made for the S550s, so they're reverse lockout-compatible. They were specifically designed keeping in mind the pull-up style or reverse lockout mechanism, but they don't leave a large gap between the bottom of the knob and the top of the factory boot, either. As far as price, these shift knobs costs right around $50, and they're actually on the less expensive side when we compare them to the other options that are out there right now, but just by a small margin. There are some more expensive billet aluminum knobs that are available if you prefer the look and feel of those, as well as other options that are not the classic 8 ball style. So the install here is really pretty easy. The shift knob doesn't come with any Loctite, though, and you're probably going to want some, so I'd suggest just picking some up before the install. The shift knob is very easy to access, and you're going to want to start the install by putting the car in reverse first. This will help you get the height of the shift knob without any trouble. The factory shift knob just comes off easily by using the normal [inaudible 00:03:26] rule. And then it's just a matter of putting some Loctite on the threads of the shifter handle, so your new shift knob doesn't back out when you start grabbing gears. Then you take your new shift knob and thread it down into place until it gets tight, but then I'd do one rotation backwards to make sure you're giving enough room for the reverse lockout. You don't want to install the knob and then not be able to get the car in reverse. Just make sure the knob is straight, so it doesn't look goofy later on, and then let it sit so that the Loctite can set. It probably needs about an hour or two to be safe, or an afternoon if you really want to be safe. Overall, this is a one-wrench install on our scale here, and it should take just about five minutes to complete as long as we don't count the set time. Wrapping things up here, the Modern Billet Retro Style 6-Speed Shift Knob is a classic 8 ball style shift knob with a 6-speed shift pattern for the MT82-equipped S550 Mustang that still has the factory shifter handle. It's reverse lockout-compatible, and there are a handful of different color options. But the color version is being made from a resin compound, and the polished version being billet aluminum, and they're all very easy to install. You can check these out more online along with all of your other shift knob options, and for all things Mustang, keep it right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

Nostalgic Styling. Add some cool vintage styling of the 60's to your manual 2015-2018 Mustang with a classic ball style Modern Billet White Shift Knob. This white shift knob features a black embossed 6-speed shift pattern and will look great with any 2015-2018 color scheme.

Reverse Lock-out Compatible. Specifically engineered to work with the S550 Mustang's pull-up style reverse lockout mechanism, this Modern Billet Shift Knob won't leave an ugly gap between the bottom of the knob and the top of the factory shift boot.

High Quality Materials. This 1-3/4" retro inspired shift knob by Modern Billet is CNC Machined from a solid block of white resin compound and finished with a black embossed 6-speed shift pattern. There's no need to worry about paint flaking off in your hand or the shift pattern fading from daily use.

Simple Installation. With its 12mm x 1.25 thread pattern, simply unscrew your old stock shift knob and screw on this new Modern Billet Knob in its place. Swapping out your shift knob couldn't be faster or easier, giving you a big change in only a few minutes.

Application. This Modern Billet White 6-speed Shift Knob is specifically designed to fit all 2015-2018 Mustangs equipped with the MT-82 6-speed manual transmission and the stock shifter handle, including the V6, EcoBoost and GT models.

Review from Modern Billet Retro Style 6-Speed Shift Knob - Polished (15-18 GT, EcoBoost, V6)

      Quality is Really Good

The quality on the polished knob is really good. The only drawback is that I live in Texas. The knob gets pretty hot during the day but because it's aluminum, it'll cool down pretty quick after the AC turns on. It won't burn you, but it is uncomfortable at first. It looks very premium though.

      Love It, One Major issue.

Received this knob with some very small scuffs and scratches on it, I was willing to deal with it because I love it. I have had this knob for 3 months and it looks like it’s 30 years old. It is covered in marks and scuff and I am pretty cautious about hitting t with anything. It sure if I had a defect or what but just my 2 cents.

Retro White Shift Knob for 2017 Mustang GT

So, I've always been a fan of this old style white "cue ball" shift knob and decided to buy one for my new Mustang GT back in Sept 2017. The online purchase and shipping to my home all went smooth. When it arrived I installed it. Overall, it looks great and I'm mostly happy with it. It's decent quality, but not as good as I was expecting/hoping. It doesn't quite feel as heavy, smooth or glossy as a real cue ball, which I had this vision in my head all these years that it would. When I installed it, I was trying to make sure it was tight enough to not come loose during shifting, but I was also trying to line up the pattern so that it would face forward correctly. Well, I think I turned it "one too many" times and I probably "slightly" stripped the threads. I my opinion, I really don't think I was turning it hard, but it stripped anyway (something to be careful for when installing. If you think that it's almost tight enough, but could use one more turn just to be sure...you know that feeling?...Well, on this product, DON'T DO IT! Almost tight enough is tight enough). So, after I felt that "slight" stripping starting to happen, I stopped turning and just brought it back to the more "loose" position and it's been there ever since. The results: Well, it definitely looks good, but there are two issues going on. 1) The knob does vibrate about 50 of the time. It's only a slight vibration and you can hear it, but not super noticeable. Of course, I notice it because I'm looking for it. 2) If you grab the knob too tightly you can turn it, but it does perform fine under normal driving conditions. Both of these issues I have been living with for the last 8 mos, mainly because the positives of the "looks" of the knob outweigh the negatives of the "issues" of the knob. If the looseness of the knob (due to the stripping of the threads) becomes an issue, for $50 I'll probably just buy another one. I REALLY like to way it looks!

Install is finicky. Directions are wrong.

Looks great and feels great in hand. OEM quality at least which I wasn't expecting for the price. The install directions are dead wrong though. They say to spin the nut all the way down. Do that and the knob will spin down and bottom (top) out before it even comes close to the jam nut. I ended up only spinning the nut on far enough to give the knob threads a couple turns of purchase. Then I twisted the knob down until it sat just above the reverse lockout collar's high point and then squared up the lettering. It doesn't twist at all even with spirited shifting and feels great while driving.

      Great retro looking gear knob

Nice quality and really suits the S550. I've seen some overly complicated fitting instructions out there for these, just put a bit of Loctite on the shaft thread, screw the gear knob on while engaging reverse and once the great knob hits the reverse mechanism, turn back half a turn or until it is straight, then leave to set. Done.
