Review & Install Video

This is a Moroso Aluminum Coolant Expansion Tank, and it fits a '96 to '04 4.6-liter Mustang. This is gonna be something that you're gonna wanna check out for a few different reasons. First of all, it's a solid one-piece design that's made from aluminum. That means that it isn't gonna have the structural weaknesses that the factory tank has, since the factory tank is a two-piece plastic tank. So this is gonna be a good option if you're looking to upgrade to a stronger tank. This is also a good option if you're looking to clean up the engine bay some and want a nicer-looking tank. The solid aluminum tank is gonna look better under the hood than the plastic tank will, especially if your car has some hard miles on it and the stock plastic tank is looking old. In some cases, the stock tank can leave a lot to be desired in the looks department. The install for this tank is easy. It's a one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter. You can plan on it taking about two hours. One of the nicer things about this tank is that it's a direct fit replacement. So, even though this is a one-piece instead of a two-piece like the stock tank is, this is still gonna bolt right in and directly replace the stock tank. You won't need to modify anything to get this installed, and it's gonna sit right in the stock location. It is going to reuse the stock factory vented cap, so when you take out your stock tank, either keep the cap or have a new stock cap ready to go. This has a 1-gallon capacity, and it's made from solid aluminum. Since this is a one-piece solid aluminum tank, it's gonna be stronger than the factory tank is, and it isn't going to have the same weaknesses that the factory tank could have, being that it's plastic and that it's two-piece. A lot of customers like this because of that. You don't have to worry about the tank failing on you like the stock tank might. And most people really like the solid aluminum for looks reasons, especially if you have some other modifications under the hood. This pairs nicely, looks wise with other upgrades, whether they be performance modifications or appearance mods. One thing I will say is that, since this is full aluminum, you're not gonna be able to check the coolant level as easily since you can't see through this like you can on the stock tank. This also doesn't have a location for the OEM low coolant sensor. Now, for you '03 to '04 Cobras, that isn't anything new, but, you GT guys out there, just keep that in mind, that you won't have that low coolant sensor anymore, and you'll need to manually check your levels. When it comes to price, you can expect to spend just over the $150 mark for this tank. This is currently the only aftermarket expansion tank that's available, and it's solid aluminum and very well-built. The install for this overflow tank is very easy. It'll take about an hour or two to complete. I'm gonna call it a one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter. I mentioned that it's a direct bolt-on replacement, which means that it'll just take the place of the factory overflow tank. And it does reuse the factory cap. You won't need any special tools to complete this install, just a few sockets, a flathead, and a hose clamp remover. You'll wanna drain some of the coolant so you can cool off your stock expansion tank. So having some extra coolant to fill up with is a good idea. The factory tank uninstalls by removing the hoses and the few bolts that hold it into place. It doesn't get much easier. You can clamp your hose down if you wanna make sure that you don't leak any coolant. And the new tank installs the same way that the factory one came out. You're gonna wanna connect your hoses after you bolt the new tank into place and make sure everything is still sitting properly. The stock cap can then be installed, and the install can be finished by topping off and bleeding the coolant system. That's gonna wrap things up for the Moroso Aluminum Coolant Expansion Tank for the '96 to '04 4.6-liter. Check it out more online right here at

Could you some how make this work on a 3.8 v6? If so how?

  • This Moroso Aluminum Coolant Expansion Tank is designed for use on the 1996 to 2004 V8 Mustangs including the GT, Bullitt, Mach 1 and SVT Cobra models.

I just changed out T stat, how much coolant should I put in this tank before I start burping process at the crossover? (2003 Mach 1)...thanks.

  • When refilling the cooling system manually, you should keep the system between the min/max markings to ensure an overflow does not occur, and a low coolant situation does not occur. Make sure to observe and maintain this coolant level. If available, a vacuum coolant fill will eliminate the need for burping the cooling system, allowing the fill to be a one step process, and ensuring no air remains in the system.

I know you take the fluid out of the old tank prior to removing it. Once you install the new tank and it is refilled, do you need to burp the coolant system now since you broke lines?

  • When installing the Moroso Aluminum Coolant Expansion Tank you should burp or bleed the cooling system, unless the system was vacuum filled. This will prevent air pockets in the system which can cause issues.

Does this have a high polish finish to it or just a brushed one?

  • The Moroso Aluminum Coolant Expansion Tank comes in a brushed finished, however, it can be polished if desired.

how do you know where to stop filling is it at the top of the cap just wondering because there isn't one already on my car and I don't know where to start filling it

  • Hello! For this, yes you will start filling it through the cap on the expansion tank. I would fill it about halfway up the tank. This expansion tank is for when the coolant expands it can overflow into this tank instead of on the ground, so leave so room for excess coolant in the tank.

I installed this on my 97GT and now my hood won't close properly. I don't think I did anything wrong I unhooked my old one and replaced the new one in the same spot. I need a cowl hood now. It looks GREAT under the hood next to my supercharger. It sticks up higher and holds more coolant than the oem

    its purty

Good looking tank. I have a Cobra so dont need a level sensor. Install no problem, even over my thick Mishimoto radiator. Its heavier than stock of course, and you cant see the coolant level, which is a problem.

    a great product

The tank quality and appearance is amazing. Does not have the structural weakness the stock plastic tank does so guaranteed no leaks. Hood clearance is a stock fit but the bottom of the tank does hit the stock fan shroud. Im going to a slim fan so doesnt bother me. All in all its a great product.

    Great fit. Nice looks.

This coolant tank mounted up perfectly and looks great. The single drawback to this piece is there is no plug or tap for the coolant sensor. Other than that i love it. AM muscle was fast with delivery and their service is great!

    Great Qualiry no sensor

This is definitely an upgrade from the stock piece however you do have to give up the sensor that tells you when you are low on coolant but well worth it

    Beautiful, high-quality tank. Impressive welds

I bought this to replace my worn, cracked factory expansion tank and I couldn't be happier with the results. This tank is a very simple installation that will take you about 30 minutes with a few simple hand tools. The tank looks absolutely gorgeous and has some very nice welds. Once installed, this tank is sure to get some attention. The tank does not include new hardware, so I would recommend getting some stainless steel nuts to keep everything looking clean. This tank does not include a radiator cap and the factory one doesn't look very good installed so I ordered a billet one. There is no spot on this tank for the coolant level sensor, so be sure to just unplug it and tie it up somewhere. I see a lot of people complaining about that but to be honest, if you don't check your fluids that often or go under the hood modding that often, why are you buying something like this in the first place? Overall, this tank fits perfectly and looks stunning. A must have if you're looking to clean up under the hood and this tank holds up well to heat if you've got some serious mods.

    Great product

I really like this product. Installation was very simple, and fitment was great. No coolant level sensor in my 04 cobra, so that was a non issue for me. My only request is for moroso to design a stock size cap that doesn't look like the stock one. Thanks for a great product.

Haven't installed yet, but welds look great. The piece itself looks very well built. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! NOTE: No cap included. Use factory cap or just pick up a new one for a couple bucks (that's what I did).

    Looks solid.

Bought this because my plastic one from 2001 got brittle and cracked when I was swapping my motor. I really like this peice. It's solid, good welds and looks really nice. There are complaints about the spot for the sensor, but I didn't have a sensor and it made no difference.

Only a bit more $$ than OEM.

This piece replaced the original plastic tank that looked suspect to me while overhauling my coolant system. Install was a snap and it looks outstanding!

    Great piece

Combined with the radiator cover this looks excellent! Although the only down side it doesn't have a spot to put the coolant level sensor in. That would of been good to know, but still wouldn't affect my decision and i would get it. It has good quality welds too.
