Ford Motorcraft Mercon V Transmission Fluid
Definitely one of the best if not the best fluid for transmissions of ford vehicles and the fact that it can be used for power steering as well, is a nice bonus!Helpful (5)

All you need is Motorcraft Mercon V
I recently purchased a 1999 Saleen Mustang with 78,000 miles on it and decided I wanted to change out the transmission fluid since I was going to install a short throw shifter (you can literally pour the fluid directly into the trans from the shifter location once you take it out) and it was probably about time to change anyways. I wasn't sure which fluid to go with at first so I asked the experts, they told me that Motorcraft Mercon V automatic trans fluid will do the trick as well as the Royal Purple brand. I have a 5 speed tremec in my stang which I found out uses automatic Mercon V fluid from the Ford factory. I wanted to use exactly what the factory uses. (When I tackled this job I drained the old fluid like you normally would through the drain plug, left the plug out, filled with new fluid until it started pouring out, obviously the car must be leveled.) I have absolutely no complaints about this product. My stang shifts perfectly fine. I recommend going with this brand because it's all you need. I believe most 99-04 mustang trans calls for about 3.2 quarts of fluid so you'll need 4 quarts total.Helpful (11)

Motorcraft Mercon V
I have been an ASE certified mechanic for 30 years and I have always had great results from Motorcraft oil. My MACH 1 just went over 100,000 miles and still shifting great.Helpful (8)

Can't go wrong with Motorcraft Fluid in a Ford
I use this exclusively in my 4R75W trans as it is what Ford recommended from the factory. No disappointments, my transmission shifts nice and crisp even with 185k miles on it.Helpful (6)

Great FOMO Product
After completing my clutch swap at 91k miles from OEM to a Exedy Stage 2 I swapped the Synchro Max to Mercon V and the trans is definitely smoother than before. Gear changes are flawless and there's no more chatter coming from the carHelpful (8)

The original is best
Tried deciding on the best fluid for my T-5 and finally decided that the best course was putting what it called for from the factory. Using another fluid designed to cover multiple applications across several manufacturer specific fluids but then claims to be "superior" to all doesn't make sense to me. Ford designs their equipment around their own fluid. Transmission shifts smoothly warm or cold. Will use again.Helpful (6)

A MUST NEED FOR MUSTANG
If the manufacturer recommends that you use Motorcraft Mercon V automatic transmission fluid... well that's what use. I purchased this and had the guy at a car wash/automobile service center use this while servicing my vehicle. Of course he had automatic transmission fluid at the shop but it wasn't Motorcraft Mercon V and I wasn't settling for anything else.Helpful (7)
Can this be used in MANUAL transmissions, like the older Mercon fluid that was specified? Since Ford no longer produces the Mercon ATF anymore, is Mercon V the fluid that is now used in its place? The owner's manual for my car specifically says NOT to use Mercon V, but I have read that Mercon V was reformulated and is now specified for use in certain manual transmissions that used to use Mercon, such as the T-5 and T-45.
You can use Mercon V in Mustangs that have the T-5 or T-45 transmissions. Ford put out a technical service bulletin ( TSB 06-26-1) that said any Mustang transmission from 1985-2007 can be serviced with Mercon V fluid because they stopped production of MERCON(R) Automatic Transmission Fluid. Here is the link to the Ford TSB: http://www.stangpit.com/wp-content/images/docs/s197-tsb/06-26-01.pdf
Do I need to have my transmission in Neutral when filling up, or is this just to check if anything leaks out?
No you not required to have the vehicle in neutral but you do want to cycle through the gears before saying its good.
How many quarts for power steering flush?
my transmission dip stick has two sets of markings how do I determine which markings should the fluid cover? 2001 mustang gt
You should have a little line on the stick that says "full" that is how you know how full it should be.
Will this work for my 2006 mustang V6 stick shift?
This transmission fluid is for automatic Mustangs only.
Ford specifies Mercon V for all applications that would have required Mercon III. Please refer to your owners manual in order to confirm how much you will require for a full flush.
Service intervals for an automatic transmission vary. The typical service interval is 60,000 to 100,000 miles, however changing it more often does no harm. Five quarts are required for a regular transmission flush.
If your owners manual states not to use the Mercon V then it would be best not to use it. It would be recommended to use what your owners manual or maintenance manual states is to be used with your Cobra.
Unfortunately, this Ford Motorcraft Mercon V Transmission Fluid is specifically designed for use on an automatic Mustang and will not work on manual models.
The Ford Motorcraft Mercon V Transmission Fluid can be used in your T5 as Mercon V has completely superseded the old Mercon III ATF Ford originally specified per TSB # 06-26-01
The Ford Motorcraft Mercon V Transmission Fluid is not a full synthetic, but rather a synthetic blend.
Five quarts are required for a regular transmission flush.
