    Review & Installation Video

    Review & Install Video

Hey, guys. Stephanie with here with my review and an install of the Pedders Extreme XA Coilover Kit available for all 2015 and newer S550 Mustangs. In this video we're gonna go over a few different topics for this coilover kit, but mostly we're gonna talk about the performance abilities of this kit and the install. Gonna cover the install in more detail later, but I'll tell you right now that this install is straightforward but it is a little bit of work. So I'm gonna call it a two out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter. Pedders Extreme coilovers are going to be for the Mustang owners out there that are looking to get away from the fixed drop of a lowering spring and for someone that's looking for height adjustability benefits and a kit that's gonna totally transform the handling of the S550 instead. Typically, a lowering spring is gonna be best for someone that's looking to simply lower their car and that doesn't really mind a stiffer ride. The spring rate and the lowering spring is not going to be as aggressive as in a coilover because they're mostly designed to be used with stock shocks. Coilovers like these on the other hand come with shocks that are set to take the abuse of a lowered car, and these are gonna be designed to work with the coilover spring rates. If we wanna just get right into this right away, we're going to be talking about the height adjustability that this kit offers, which I think is one of the biggest pluses when choosing a coilover setup as opposed to a traditional aftermarket static spring setup. We're gonna see that this kit offers anywhere from the stock ride height to a two and a half inch drop. This means it can go anywhere from just below stock height to tucking wheel height and anywhere in between depending on what you're looking for here. And we know from lowering springs for the S550 that a 2.5 inch drop on an S550 is significant. So you have a lot of room here to get your ride height how you'd like it. This kit is going to include two front strut assemblies, two rear shocks, two rear springs, and your spanner wrenches. You don't get new dust boots because you can see that the dust boot is integrated into the body here. And the spanner wrenches are gonna be your way to adjust the coilover height which you can seat your threads right here in the actual strut body. Now, this is superior to the other type of coilover where you literally need to turn a spring perch to compress the spring against the top hat in order to change ride height. The problem with this is that it puts pre-load on the springs and you're already setting yourself up to lose some handling performance. So this right here is a better design because you're actually expanding or compressing the length of the coilover itself. This isn't gonna change the compression of the spring and it's a better way to adjust height. Getting into some more of the specifics about the construction here. Other than the fully integrated monotube body and integrated dust boot, you're also looking at alloy steel Motorsport springs which are designed for the abuse of the coilover, aluminum spring seats and lower mounts, and of course, a factory style bracket which makes this a direct bolt-on replacement. Another big feature of these coilovers is that they are 30-way adjustable which means that you have 30 positions of adjustment between bump and rebound dampening, which is the compression rebound of the shock and strut. This is going to allow you to stiffen or soften the shocks and strut which means that you have a whole other level of adjustment and customization here. You're really gonna be able to set your car up for the performance that you want out of it. These having such a large range of height adjustment and dampening adjustment puts this kit towards the top of the line when you look at your other options that are out there right now. This kit gives you more performance than a kit with height adjustment only. This is a bolt-on kit, guys, and it'll work for both coupe and convertible models. There's no permanent modification necessary but there is a fair amount of work involved with the install, a few hours or so. So I'll call this a two out of three wrenches on our scale when we look at overall difficulty. The work is straightforward, and ultimately you're going to need a decent socket set, a jack and stands or a lift to get the job done. And again, it's nothing too hard but just a little time consuming. You have to break down everything like your calipers and rotors and get your old shock and strut and spring setup out. Then, you've got to get your new setup in, and then don't forget you might need a little extra time to get the ride height dialed in to your looking and the dampening adjustment as well. You may end up having to do a few adjustments to get your car to be where you want it to be, and then you have to make sure it's even on each side. You're gonna wanna make sure that you're setting it up for whatever you plan on doing with your car or for the performance that you want out of it, whether it be the drag strip, a cornering beast, or just a low rider in general. And keep in mind that after tweaking this much of your car's suspension and ride height, you're probably gonna need a good alignment to make sure everything looks good and still in spec. All right, so overall the Pedders Extreme Coilover Kit is a high-quality kit that's gonna offer a lot of room to adjust ride height and dampening as well. Its design means adjustment on the strut tubes themselves which is superior to other methods, and it offers a wide range of adjustment from stock height all the way to two and a half inches lower. But as always, don't just take my word for it especially when it comes to something of this nature. I'll always encourage you guys to check it out more online for yourself and look at your other options that are out there. I'm Stephanie and for all things Mustang keep it right here at

Hi, Im planning to lower my car about 1.5 inch on the front and rear. Would front and rear camber plates/brackets needed to get proper alignment with this kit? If so which product would you recommend?

    • Yes, with this kit here going that low would require the use of caster camber plates to get a proper alignment. Any of the caster camber plates we have on the website can be good options with this, however, I usually recommend going with the maximum motorsports caster camber plates with coil overs item number 389059.

Are front and rear camber plates/brackets needed to get proper alignment with it set at a lower height?

    • Since the height is adjustable with these Pedders Extreme XA Coilover Kit, it would be difficult to say if caster/camber plates would be needed. Depending on how much the vehicle is lowered, and if there are any additional suspension modifications, the use of those plates may or may not be necessary. If the vehicle is stock, caster/camber plates are typically only needed for drops in ride height which are greater than 1.5 inch drops in order to retain factory alignment specifications.

So i like driving in the canyons and street. Will this be suitable for both? or is it to extreme?

    • These coilovers are suitable for occasional track use while still retaining street driveability with no issue. You can simply adjust the dampening so you can tighten the ride for track use and lighten the suspension for daily driving.

To fit the maximum motorsports camber plates do you have to cut the strut tower at all?

    • We have not tested the Maximum Motorsports Caster Camber Plates with the Pedders Extreme XA Coilover Kit to confirm fitment, however the Maximum Motorsports Plates do not require cutting the strut tower.

I am planning 7/8" drop front and 1/2" drop in the rear. Would you recommend caster camber kit? If so, what would you recommend? The car will be aligned at a ford dealership. Thanks!

    • The caster camberkit that we recommend with this kit is this one here:

Took a chance, glad I did.

So even after the 1k price tag $800 install for these (not happy about that) totally worth the money. At least so far, long term performance remains to be seen. Ride comfort 8.5/10: Very surprised was expecting a rougher ride. Keep in mind this is 8 back from full hard on front and rear so very aggressive for street setting. I feel like full stiff would still be very forgiving. Only harshness is on very sharp drops and bumps like potholes. Even speed bumps feel solid but very forgiving. Handling 9/10: Crazy difference even coming from SR lowering springs. Hard to describe. Very tight feeling now and body roll very controlled. You don't feel like the car is trying to throw you out the door as much when making tight turns at fast speeds. And yet it's still a comfortable ride. Stance 10/10: They are adjustable. Noise 9/10: Would be 10/10 but very slight noises from rear springs when body weight shifts. Seems to be due to how the adjustment ring sits inside the inner rear coils. There is a bit of play and it's metal on metal. But it's very faint and not really annoying. It's just noticeable from time to time. Although oddly not over speed bumps or any bumps I can hear of. Mostly like after coming to a stop. Fronts are wisper quiet. Overall so far really happy and took a chance on a name brand not known in the mustang world. But seem to be quickly making one for themselves here too. FYI I doubt this current pricing will last as I suspect for the qaulity they are using the cheap price to initially build a rep. But then again who knows I was just expecting a lot less performance for the money. To be fair these are also my first ever coilovers.

      OMG, Amayzing

I have had many lowered cars over the years and all I can say about this kit as it is simply amazing the ride quality is superb and I have a 2018 Mustang GT with performance Pack 2 and it rides better than it did before the stances awesome adjustments are easy and the install is pretty straightforward, though this kit did not come with very good instructions but that wasn't a setback because there are many YouTube videos out there on how to install a kit like this. I purchase this kit also with the Peddlers camber plates to get the alignment Tip Top everything worked well and I am very very satisfied with this coilover kit if you're considering this kit over another higher dollar brand.... don't! just buy this one and be done with it and save 400$ to $500. Love it!

Great performance, needed rear camber adjustment

The ride quality and performance of this product is excellent. I now get feedback on wheel spin and drift that could not be felt before. It corners with confidence like a dream. I lowered my car 11/4” and You absolutely need the front camber plates, which was ok because i purchased them based on other reviews. Make sure you move the screws in the camber plate to the closer holes so you can adjust them with a wobble allen keyafter install. The unfortunate part was the rear camber needed adjustment after install, even though Angel from pedders was extremely helpful and said it didn’t, this adjustment had to be done after the toe was adjusted. (Camber was out 3 deg). There was an unexpected cost of Steeda Rear Camber Mount Adjustment Kit, but once installed my alignment shop was able to dial it in. Just wish the kit included front and rear adjustment. The only other issue was the locknut came loose on the rear shock, I thought the back end was falling off but once tightened everything was good.

      coils are great but.....

The coils are a great product. Only downside is you will need camber caster plates and the only ones that work with their coils are their CC plates. You will have to cut your strut opening and make it larger in order for them to work.

Time to install was easy with lots of YouTube how to videos. Took an afternoon because I didn’t have all the thing I needed at first. But with all the tools and following the install process on YouTube. With power tools can be done in 1-2 hrs. W/o power tools it took 3-4 hrs

These are amazingly easy to install and completely change the feel of the car! With all of the adjustment capabilities, your options are endless. These perform just as good if not better than my last coilovers that were over $2,500. Get them, you won’t be disappointed.

      Big Improvement

I've been driving with the Pedders Extreme XA for 2 months now and I'm pleased with how the kit is performing. I dropped the car just under an inch front and rear and I think it looks good. The install took me 4 hours by myself in the driveway on jack stands. I spent 2 of those hours getting the ride height correct, and adjusting the rear shock length to match. It rides much more firm than stock (non-performance pack anyway) the way I have it set up (10 from full firm). It's never jarring though and while the smaller road imperfections are more noticeable, the large impacts are much better controlled especially at higher speeds. I dinged it a star for fit because I wasn't able to get the front camber in spec, and one for bang for your buck because I haven't figured out if any of the camber/caster plates are compatible.
