    Review & Install Video

Stephanie with here with my breakdown of the Motive rear end installation and bearing kit for all Mustangs with 8.8 rears, or in other words, all '86 to '14 V8s and '11 to '14 V6s. Ford's 8.8 rears are as stout as can be, almost the 9 inch of our generation. But, any time you're pulling the rear apart, whether you're just changing your rear gears or doing some maintenance on a higher mileage vehicle, it makes sense to install new seals and bearings while the housing is apart. It's never a good idea to redo a rear end using original bearings and bolts. Before I get too far into laying this kit out for you guys, I want to take a closer look at the brand, Motive. Motive Gear has been offering some of the highest quality drivetrain components on the market today for quite some time. You can find their logo on many drag cars including a large handful of Mustangs that participate in any major racing series, including the NMRA, NMCA, and NHRA. This Motive rear end install and bearing kit includes all of your bearings, seals, shims, and bolts, even down to the gear marking compound and Loctite. If you didn't know already, starting in 2010 Ford changed the inner rear gear pinion bearing in the 8.8 rear. This means that all of you 2010 and up owners will need a new 8.8 pinion bearing for proper installation which can be selected from the drop down menu on the product page at Click below to head back to the site if you aren't already there to see what I'm talking about. Installing this kit requires a higher level of mechanical expertise or even the help of a professional. If you're not familiar with setting backlash and pinion depth then I would recommend having a professional install this kit. In fact, a lot of our customers are letting us know that they did just that. They purchased the kit and had a professional install it to make sure that the proper gear mesh pattern was established. If you are tackling this job yourself, you're probably looking at about four hours of install time which can be made easier with the use of a lift and all of the proper tools necessary. But, it can still be done with the use of a jack and some stands. If you guys have any questions about this kit or the install, you can always reach out to a Mustang expert at any time. If you're installing some new rear gears or freshening up your Mustang that has some good mileage on it, you definitely need to check out the Motive rear end install and bearing kit for your 8.8 equipped V8 or V6 Mustang available here at

Everything Needed to Rebuild 8.80-Inch Rear End. When you're installing new gears in your Mustang's rear differential, it just makes sense to install new seals and bearings while the housing is apart. This is particularly true if your pony has more than 60,000 miles on it. It ensures against the need for another costly teardown and rebuild.

Attention 2010 and Newer Mustang Owners. Starting in 2010 Ford changed the inner rear gear pinion bearing in all 8.80-inch equipped Mustangs. With that in mind, you will require a new 8.80-inch rear gear pinion bearing (Ford part# 9L3Z-4630-A) for proper installation, please see drop down option above.

Application. This Motive Bearing Kit is designed for use in Mustangs that have an 8.80-inch rear end differential.

    5 Top Rated Questions

I have read the contents of this kit, I have watched the video, but I STILL DON'T KNOW if this kit includes the rear gear pinion bearing kit necessary for 2010 Mustang gear swaps? And this is from a person who reads, writes and interprets complex written language for a living... Also, can not find this "drop-down" menu you are talking about in the video. You warn about it being necessary all the time, yet do not state clearly if this bearing kit contains it or not. Please indicate this CLEARLY for everyone to see, it is really confusing. Apart from that (assuming the kit DOES NOT include the rear, which I seem to deduct from one of the answers for previous questions), why make a bearing kit without the most important and needed bearing? Does ANY kit you sell include this 2010 rear gear pinion bearing (maybe those big kits with bottles for 279$ or any other kits by Ford?) or the only way is to buy the bearing separately?

    • We do apologize that the listing is not clear enough. The Motive Rear End Installation and Bearing Kit does not include the Rear Gear Pinion Bearing for 2010-2014 Mustangs. The bearing is not included in the kit because the kit is designed for 1986-2014 Mustangs, and it is not necessary for the majority of the years this kit works on. It is included in the Gear Combo Kits for the 2010-2014 GT and 2011-2014 V6 Mustangs found here:

What type of bearing come in this kit? Koyo or Timken?

Whats the difference? What is the difference between this kit and the kit for 35 dollars?

    • This kit comes complete with everything you need for a full rebuild: bearings, shims, crush sleeve, etc... The $35 kit is a basic kit that is the same as the more expensive version, but there are no bearings included. We highly recommend getting the complete kit and replacing all your bearings and shims at the same time to prevent any costly problems down the road. It's better to replace them all at once, rather than having to tear the car apart again just for a bearing gone bad.

I plan on adding the 2012 Boss 302 Torsen differential to my 2011 Mustang GT. Is this the proper kit I will need to freshen up rear end when I have the Torsen installed? The stock rear end has about 41k on it and 3.73 gears. And will the kit's cover plate seal work with the aluminum differential cover plate?

    • This Motive Rear End Installation and Bearing Kit does indeed come with everything needed to install new gears into a new differential.

      Bearings fit with no issues!

Wasnt to happy about the pinion seal, it poured gear oil out as fast as i put it in. Must have been a defect. Luckily i work at an automotive repair shop and ordered a new pinion seal from them, had to order new one because i drove my mustang in the service bay and it was my ride home. Fortunately i ordered it 15min before delivery cut off at 2pm on a saturday. Only took me 3 hrs do do the job.

      Great mod!

I was planning on upgrading my 3.15 gears to 3.73 after winter in the summer. However, my car had other plans. I developed some whining and issues with the rear. Instead of fixing the issue which would have been way cheaper. I decided since I am going to open it up I might as well upgrade. I have a few things to mentions if you are doing it yourself. This job is indeed a very messy job and requires a lot of work. We had done it on jacks, but I recommend finding a shop that can do it for a fair price. It is truly not worth doing it yourself. Also, you will need many specialty tools. Many of which you have to rent and some I had to purchase. Even with the right tools, there is still a lot you have to improvise yourself. Another mention is that you will need to buy a third bottle since you need to lube up the bearings as well as fill up the differential. When it comes to performance the car pulls very hard specifically if you have a tune on the car. I was quite surprised how the car had improved. I would recommend this mod hands down, but you really have to decide if you want to install it yourself.

Shims aren't the right size for the 98 cobra

This kit will not fit perfectly on a 98 cobra rear end. I took my car to the shop to have them install this kit along with new 3.73 gears and they had a lot of trouble with the fitment of the shims included in this kit. It took them an extra two days to get the job done due to the poor fitment. Because they are a quality shop, they wouldn't risk just giving me back my car with the ill fitting parts I brought them so they took it to a specialized rear end shop to have them install properly fitting shims in order to have the car running and feeling 100 when they gave it back to me. Maybe if I would have gone with the Ford Racing kit I would not have had this problem but I guess I will never know unless I rebuild another similar rear end in the future.
