Review & Install Video

Hey everyone Justin here with, and I’m checking out Accel’s super coil on plug kit for all 99-04 Mustang GTs. Accel has been in the performance ignition game for well over 40 years, and continues to produce parts that aim to squeeze every ounce of horse power out of your car, whether it’s a weekend cruiser or an all out drag strip monster. These Accel coils give your modular motor a spark that is 10-15% stronger than your OEM coils by using a specialized magnetic steel core, optimized winding, resistance and turn ratio, this basically equates to a hotter, stronger spark, which gives you more horsepower and better fuel economy. This is extremely important to those of you looking to get the most out of your motor, but may be dealing with old faulty OEM coils, possibly resulting in a misfire. Alright I know what you’re thinking, get to the good stuff already, gotcha. Ultimately we want to see what kind of improvement these coils will make on our GT, but before we do that let’s get a baseline number down and see what we’re working with. So our baseline run on our 2000 GT gave us 221 horsepower and 261 ft/lbs of torque. Now let’s get those stock coils out of there and install our Accel units. Install is very simple and should take you about 30 minutes using standard hand tools, I will advise you to disconnect your battery first and then go ahead and remove your intake tube, that way you can access everything a whole lot easier. You will need to grab a 7mm socket, and remove each one of your coils individually replacing them with the Accel units. So now we have everything installed here back at the shop we’re going to run the car once again on the dyno and see the improvements this kit made on our GT. So with our Accel coils installed we put down a total of 220 horsepower and 267 ft/lbs of torque, now while we didn’t see any peak horsepower gains from the coils, we did manage to pick up 7 horsepower and 11 ft/lbs of torque throughout the curve. Let’s face it, getting old stinks, especially when it comes to critical components pertaining to your ride, your factory coils are a great example. As they age they have a tendency to fail, resulting in loss of power, worse fuel economy, and ultimately a poor running vehicle. This kit from Accel is a great way to make your modular motor feel young again for a fraction of the price of new OEM coils.

More Horsepower. The Accel Super Coil On Plug Kit makes more power then the wimpy stock OEM factory coils to help produce more horsepower from your modern SOHC modular motor and are a perfect match for stock engines and engines with minor performance upgrades. Curve gains of 7 HP and 11 TQ has been seen on a Stock Mustang with a 93 Octane Tune.

Superior Design. Accel coils feature an advanced bobbin technology, highly specialized silicone magnetic steel cores, along with optimized winding, resistance and turns ratios to delivery 10-15% more energy than the stock OEM coils. More energy equals a hotter spark that burns fuel more completely releasing all it's potential energy translating into better fuel economy and more power that you can feel.

Application. These Accel two valve Super Coil On Plugs are designed as a direct performance replacement for the 1999 to 2004 SOHC GT Mustangs.

What spark plugs are needed with super coils When buying super coil-on-plug kits, is a stock or stock replacement spark plug OK? Or do you need a special plug because of the higher voltage?

  • I put in factory motorcraft spark plugs when I put the coils in and it's been about 5 months car still runs strong as when I first put'm in. Hope this helps.

Alternator upgrade needed? is it a "wise" choice, or a "must have" choice to upgrade alternator also? I do know i got a bad coil and need new ones, but if i get them and later on upgrade alt. will the new coils put more strain on stock alt?

  • I'm not sure about a "wise" choice, but we kept the stock alternator, drove 1600 miles through the mountains and had no issues at all (not "must have").

Will these work on a '98 4.6L? Searched for something similar but nothing really came up

  • Hi, These Accel Super Coil On Plug Kit will not work on a 98 4.6L because 96-98 Mustangs use what is called Coil Packs, I recommend 2 of the Accel Super EDIS Coil Pack Item #37226 Here is the link

    These are junk!

Sorry...I have to change my last review. I drove about 200 km and these coils crapped out. When I got home from Toronto, I regretfully ordered another set. They crapped out within an hour of driving. I had misfires. There is a reason why the oem coils are $100 each. They are built well and they work. These Accel coils are cheap and will more then likely fail. They even have a cheap Accel sticker that just peels off when they get hot. I have since put the stock coils back on and the car runs like a charm.

    super coil

I would have to say that these coils make a world of difference over my stock (OEM) coils the reason i had to change mine out wasent for more power but a word of advice be carful washing your engine/engine bay as water can get under thoes coils and corode and make your pony loose power so yes i had great results more power through the entire power band and better throttle response

I replaced the OEM coils on my 99 gt and the results are incredible. Smooth power gain through the entire band. HP and MPG are impressingly greater. And the price is incredible. I highly recommend this to ALL mustang owners.

    one year update

It's march 2011 and I installed these plugs in april of last year(not quite a year but close enough) and wanted to give a review update. I've clocked about 15,000 miles since and these COPs still work as good as they did when I first installed them. The stickers did start to peel off about 6 months ago but big deal. I'm wondering if the Dean guy that had a bad experience had washed his motor soon after the install. That's one HUGE reason the COPs on these modular motors go out in the first place. If they get water in them they're usually toast. That's my only guess or he had a spark plug issue and replaced them as well when he put the new OEM COPs in. Who knows... All I can say from personal experience is I HIGHLY recommend these as a less expensive high performing alternative to your stock COPs when they start to go out. 5 Stars.

Used these as a replacement for the stock COPs when they started to fail. The engine feels alive and runs much more efficiant now.

2001 GT. Had a miss at 67,000 with the OEM plugs.Replaced the plugs with OEM. Miss still there. Replaced OEM COP's with Accel COP's. Miss GONE. Starts and runs great. Easy swap. 45 min.

    Good value

Fixed my misfire. Easy install. For those guys having issues with these, I am starting to wonder if the did not blow the junk out of the spark plug holes before removing the plugs, or perhaps washed the engine after installing the COP's. Water mixed with electronics is bad. One bit of advice I have, use a tiny bit of anti-seize lubricant on the the COP hold down bolts to help keep them from seizing in the intake manifold. Definitely a good buy, especially considering OEM COP's run $100+ each.

    No More Missfire

I had a miss fire under load on my '03 GT. I changed the spark plugs and it helped quite a bit but the miss was still there every once in a while. I got these coils and the miss is completely gone now! My fuel mileage also went up a little. Install was very easy: about 20 mins

    Don\'t buy

I purchased these coils about 6 months ago and they were great at first really woke my stang up. Now only 6 months and 2000 miles later I have had 3 fail and have resorted to putting my OEM coils back in.

The Name Is Not A Joke!

These coils really are super. If you're willing to spend the extra cash, definitely get the Accel Super Coils. These are the real deal and work like a charm. My lower RPMs went from sluggish to smooth. These with some new plugs really wake the lower RPM range of the car up and give it a kick in the rear. Install is a bit trickier than they make it out to be, but its nothing crazy. Dont wait, just get them!
