- How to Install an Accel Super Coil On Plug for 1999-2004 Mustang GT
Hey everyone Justin here with AmericanMuscle.com, and I’m checking out Accel’s super coil on plug kit for all 99-04 Mustang GTs. Accel has been in the performance ignition game for well over 40 years, and continues to produce parts that aim to squeeze every ounce of horse power out of your car, whether it’s a weekend cruiser or an all out drag strip monster. These Accel coils give your modular motor a spark that is 10-15% stronger than your OEM coils by using a specialized magnetic steel core, optimized winding, resistance and turn ratio, this basically equates to a hotter, stronger spark, which gives you more horsepower and better fuel economy. This is extremely important to those of you looking to get the most out of your motor, but may be dealing with old faulty OEM coils, possibly resulting in a misfire. Alright I know what you’re thinking, get to the good stuff already, gotcha. Ultimately we want to see what kind of improvement these coils will make on our GT, but before we do that let’s get a baseline number down and see what we’re working with. So our baseline run on our 2000 GT gave us 221 horsepower and 261 ft/lbs of torque. Now let’s get those stock coils out of there and install our Accel units. Install is very simple and should take you about 30 minutes using standard hand tools, I will advise you to disconnect your battery first and then go ahead and remove your intake tube, that way you can access everything a whole lot easier. You will need to grab a 7mm socket, and remove each one of your coils individually replacing them with the Accel units. So now we have everything installed here back at the shop we’re going to run the car once again on the dyno and see the improvements this kit made on our GT. So with our Accel coils installed we put down a total of 220 horsepower and 267 ft/lbs of torque, now while we didn’t see any peak horsepower gains from the coils, we did manage to pick up 7 horsepower and 11 ft/lbs of torque throughout the curve. Let’s face it, getting old stinks, especially when it comes to critical components pertaining to your ride, your factory coils are a great example. As they age they have a tendency to fail, resulting in loss of power, worse fuel economy, and ultimately a poor running vehicle. This kit from Accel is a great way to make your modular motor feel young again for a fraction of the price of new OEM coils.

You get what you pay for with these coil packs. They only offer a 90-day warranty for a reason. Suggest, getting part store lifetime warranty brand or Ford OEM instead of these Accell yellows. They cause misfires and can handle much less pressure and tolerance vs OEM. Not to mention, had two coil female connections break off when switching back to OEM.Helpful (0)

Hit Or Miss
When you get a good batch, they work just fine. As good as the more expensive OEM coils. Though, I have found that the defect rate is higher than the OEM coils. I had one die out after only 30 days and on another set I purchased, one was DOA.Helpful (2)

So far so good
There are some bad reviews for these coils, decided to give them a try they're the best value I could find. Have had them installed for a few months now and they work great. Can't say I've noticed a considerable power improvement aside from restoring lost power from old failing stock coilsHelpful (3)

Replaced old plugs with Ford Motorcraft and these Accel packs, bout an hour to replace all 8, it's a 2000 gt, 4.6 around 126,000 miles, it was time to upgrade the electrical, really impressive, no hesitationHelpful (2)
What spark plugs are needed with super coils When buying super coil-on-plug kits, is a stock or stock replacement spark plug OK? Or do you need a special plug because of the higher voltage?
I put in factory motorcraft spark plugs when I put the coils in and it's been about 5 months car still runs strong as when I first put'm in. Hope this helps.
do I need to order wires with this item?
99-04 dont have plug wires you just have plugs and coil packs
Alternator upgrade needed? is it a "wise" choice, or a "must have" choice to upgrade alternator also? I do know i got a bad coil and need new ones, but if i get them and later on upgrade alt. will the new coils put more strain on stock alt?
I'm not sure about a "wise" choice, but we kept the stock alternator, drove 1600 miles through the mountains and had no issues at all (not "must have").
What's the life expectancy of this product? I bought the same exact ones and installed them 50K later, 1 COP has failing/failed.
It can really depend on several factors. We recommend checking with the manufacturer.
Would these work well with the go iridium spark plugs and if so would I need to gap the spark plugs or do anything like such as tuning or gapping or anything like that
These will work with the NGK Iridium spark plugs. You would keep the same gap in the spark plugs as factory.
No these coil packs would not work with you 2001 mustang gt
This will not work with DOHC.
Yes, they will work with an 01 Mustang GT.
These will not require any other modifications for these to replaceyour stock coil packs.
These coils have a max voltage of 26,000 while the stock would be around 20,000 V.
Yes, these are smog legal.
Hello, JamesBT5U3342208 replacing those old factory coils is a great way to free up some power, provide you with better mileage and nail down some preventative maintenance.
The Accel Super Coil On Plug Kit will not fit an 04 F150.
The Accel Super Coil On Plug Kit is not covered by a Manufacturer's warranty.
Hi, These Accel Super Coil On Plug Kit will not work on a 98 4.6L because 96-98 Mustangs use what is called Coil Packs, I recommend 2 of the Accel Super EDIS Coil Pack Item #37226 Here is the link http://www.americanmuscle.com/accel-coilpack-9698gt.html
