    Review & Install Video

This is the BBK Off-Road X-Pipe for '96 to '98 GT's. And this is gonna be a good option for someone looking for a 2 ½ inch off-road X-Pipe to work with a set of Shorty headers, either the stock headers or an aftermarket set of Shorties. The install for this mid-pipe is easy. It's a one out of three wrenches in the difficulty meter and should take you an hour or two tops. Generally speaking, an X-Pipe is gonna produce more volume from an exhaust system. They tend to be louder and have a raspy note, while an H-Pipe gives a deeper tone. So you can expect this X-Pipe to give a louder raspier note. Honestly speaking though, the exact type of sound that you can expect really all depends on your axle-back situation too. But because this is catless, you can expect even more volume than you'd get from a catted X-Pipe. It's a 2 ½ inch mid-pipe, so it's gonna keep the stock diameter. That makes it a direct replacement for the factory mid-pipe, and it keeps the stock location for the O2 sensors. Of course, it's mandrel-bent for smooth air flow and materials-wise, it's made from aluminized tubing. Now, aluminized materials has its upsides and its downsides. The upside here is that this is very affordable, the downside or the trade-off that you get is that aluminized tubing doesn't have the corrosion resistance that stainless steel has. That means that stainless steel is gonna be a better option for someone that's shopping for a daily driver or a car that sees all different types of road conditions. When it comes to price, you can expect to pay just over the $200 mark for this mid-pipe. BBK does make this exact mid-pipe with cats if you didn't want the catless version but a catted mid-pipe will cost more. You're looking at just over $400 for the catted mid-pipe but, of course, you do have other options in BBK when it comes to stock-like X-Pipes. So you have others out there that you can always check out. If you look at the install of the mid-pipe, you're looking at an easy install. It's a one out of three wrenches in the difficulty meter. You can plan on spending an hour or two tops. You will need a socket set for this install. And as always, a lift would make your job easier, but the job can be done on a jack and jack stands. You'll want to remove the O2 sensors before doing anything. Then you can unbolt the stock or the current mid-pipe that you have. You can drop this as one piece to make it easier. Disconnect the air tube from the mid-pipe and disconnect the mufflers from the mid-pipe. The mid-pipe will then be free to drop. All you're looking at needing to do then is assembling the new mid-pipe into one-piece and then connect the air tube and clamp the new mid-pipe into place, and that's it. One thing to keep in mind though is that you should re-tighten your clamps after your car's had some run time. This will get rid of any exhaust leaks that you might have after the initial startup. That's gonna wrap things up for the BBK Off-Road X-Pipe for the '96 to '98 GT. As always, you can check it out more online right here at americanmuscle.com.

When installin this x-pipe do i need o2 sensers or do those go away with the new mid pipe??

    LUKEC

    • The BBK Off-Road X-Pipe has four bungs for the oxygen sensors. They will need to be installed for the car to function properly.

Hi I am thinking about getting this product for my 98 gt. I recently purchased the SLP loudmouth catback exhaust. Will this fit with my exhaust. And also would I need shorty headers or long tube headers or could I do either one?

    GriffinH

    • The BBK Off-Road X-Pipe will work perfectly with the SLP Loudmouth Cat-Back Exhaust. This BBK Off-Road X-Pipe is designed to work with the stock headers or any aftermarket shorty headers.

Sounds good, easy install. Getting the stock midpipe off with out breaking any manifold studs is the only "tricky" part, after that you're golden.

      Exhausted

Overall quick and easy to install, less than 2 hrs. The rods for the hangers are a little narrow, only goes about half way into exhaust rubber hangers, but hasn't come loose. Sounds good, a little raspy when revved, great idle tone.

This BBK x-pipe is 100x better than getting a exhaust system. You will hear a major improvement. I also I have Flowmaster 10 series with these and together they are the loudest combination

      BBK X

I absolutely love the bbk off road x pipe. I have a 1996 GT and the only complaint I have is that the pipe rattles against the passenger side floor pan. A little work from the shop and it is 95 gone. The sound is what you want every muscle car to sound like. The system deletes 6 catalytic converters which makes it twice as loud than the stock mid pipe if not more! I am extremely happy with the sound to try and describe the sound of the off road xpipe and flowmaster 40s it sounds free not restricted, hollow, raspy, throaty, and well just sounds great. Performance wise I can feel it pulling a little harder and when you rev it out it revs much more freely. I LOVE IT. WORTH THE MONEY!

They say loud pipes save lives...

Bought the BBK X-pipe for my '97 GT to compliment my SLP resonators. The fit and finish I would say is fairly good. The car is way louder than when I had an h-pipe. Maybe an increase in hp, but nothing you can actually feel at the pedal. I don't know if it's the combination of my SLP resonators and x-pipe or just the x-pipe, but the car is way too raspy for my taste. At idle and lower RPMs the exhaust is loud, but not too loud. Way loud in the higher rpms though (which I like). You will get noticed with this set-up. Overall I'd say the product quality is good. If you like a raspy exhaust than I'd recommend it. If you're like me and would rather have a deeper tone, go with an off-road h-pipe.

      Best by far!

first off i got these with within two days, so am thanks to you for doing your part very well. The install took me a while, only because it took so long to get the stock pipe off. i ended up cutting two bolts and after hitting up my neighbor who races mustangs for the right tools we got the stock h pipe out of the car and after that install of the x pipe at most took 30minutes, i would for sure buy this part again, but would probably reccomend a shop do it. It can be done at home, but exhaust work is always a pain.

      SOUNDS AWESOME!

I have a 96 GT with BBK CAI, BBK 78mm Throttle Intake, Borla Cat-back, and now this BBK X-pipe, all tied together with a BAMA 87 Performance tune, and it sounds AMAZING! It's loud, but cruising on the highway isn't bad at all, I can barely here it when I'm on cruise control. But, when you step on it (which I can't stop doing), it SCREAMS. Going from an H-pipe with 6 cats to an X-pipe with none, I can feel a minimal loss in low end torque, but the the high end horsepower gain is sooooo worth it. My dad has a Z06 corvette with long tube headers, o/r x-pipe, and borlas, and my car now sounds just like his! My bolts were rusted so I couldn't break them loose myself. Shop installed it for $60.
