Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and this is my breakdown of the B&M hammer console ratchet shifter, fitting all 94-04 automatic Mustangs. Hot rodders have been looking to B&M for well over 50 years, for all of their performance shifting needs, and their presence is still just as strong in today’s muscle car world. Alright, we know the stock shifter can handle the daily driver duties just fine, but when you start getting serious about your street and strip performance, that stock shifter can quickly become a liability. You can miss shifts, get hung up between gears, and in some very rare, very extreme cases, even shift into neutral or reverse which obviously is never a good thing. When installed the B&M allows you to manually shift the forward gears of your Mustang, by either ratcheting up or down on the lever, or on the other hand you can just leave the shifter in drive and cruise around like you would using the factory shifter, it’s the best of both worlds. Thanks to the reverse lockout feature, you can easily bang those gears without having to worry about accidentally shifting into reverse. Taking a closer look at everything you receive from B&M, you can see this is a total package, of course they include the shifter mechanism itself but they also include a factory like shifter bezel, lighted gear indicator, leather shift boot, and a B&M T handle shift knob. This shifter is both NHRA and IHRA certified, making it an excellent choice for any street or strip Mustang. The hammer is a no modification needed bolt on for the AOD trans found in all 94-04 automatic Mustangs. You will need to do some work both inside and underneath the car, so make sure you have your jack stands or ramps ready before you get started. In addition you will need to wire in the overdrive button and LED illumination into your factory wiring, so just make sure you have a soldering iron ready. When it’s all said and done, you should be wrapped up in about 2 hours from start to finish. Perhaps one of the best features about this shifter that you won’t find in the product description, is that a majority of our customer reviews say the B&M ratchet shifter just makes the car more fun to drive, well there’s really only one way to find out, so with the shifter installed let’s grab our GT and put it to the test. Alright so we’re out in the 2000 GT, we’ve got the B&M ratchet shifter installed, and my first impression looks wise is it looks killer I mean it adds a little bit of that race car flavor to the interior, but we want to see how this thing performs. Right now we have it in drive, and we’re just kind of cruising around like you would in a normal automatic car, but what’s a ratchet shifter without actually shifting, so with that said, we’re coming up to a stop sign here, we’ll ratchet it on down into first. Alright, now we’ve got the car in first, we’ll pull out here from a stop and see if this thing shifts as it should. Hammer on, second, third, there you go, I mean it does kind of make driving an automatic fun in a way, I mean you’re shifting the car, again it’s not exactly like a manual car, you’re obviously not working the clutch but for the most part, it gives you something to do. It looks great, it feels great but...
i was very excited about this shifter, there is not a lot of options for good shifters for us that have automatics without modifying the center console so i order this and first of all the box came completely beat up, 2 holes that could put my hands through and it was my fault to not stop and call before anything but i was too excited and need it the car running decided to install it as i was very excited and i need it to get the car moving so, unfortunately, parts fell off from the box but i didn't notice until i had the shifter installed and the shifter connection for the cable was too big for the cable turns out the one i need it for the 4r70w was in the box or bag that fell out of it i guess, no big deal right? i said stuff happens ill just buy the part so i continue the install as i need the car to get to work so i manage to modify the shifter cable to work with the bigger ball just so i could go to work, the problem now is that no body and i mean NO BODY have the hardware for sale not even Holley and of course because its been installed american muscle won't exchange it without a shop order but if i had the money to pay a shop to improve my car i would just let them buy it from wherever they want, contacting holley says that they cant do anything until 90 days because i didnt buy directly from them so now i have a very shiny shifter that won't fit properly, won't shift right, either it won't get first gear or park and without the correct hardware i belive it would never be right so if you want to try your luck with this shifter it does feel like if it worked properly it would be very fun to drive the car arround but if you decide to get it, get it directly from Holley, at least if you have problems you dont have to deal with what im dealing withHelpful (0)

I had mine installed I have noticed the overdrive button is very poor quality just touching the button triggers it, when not banging the shifter going from second to drive it will not shift the car but shifter will move to drive position. Also doesn't sit flush into position without some trimming.Helpful (0)

Changed my life
Before the Ratchet shifter, I was a simple man, I did could not keep up with life, I was too slow. That was until I stumbled upon this great piece of engineering excellence. I ordered the part and it came in the mail so quick, as if it was a wish from a genie. I installed it myself, blood, sweat and fear, as I gave it a test drive, downshifted to 2nd and the torque alone adjusted my spinal cord and my ligaments due to the stress of being slow. I stepped on the gas and bald eagles were coming out my double barreled bazooka x pipe, tires were spinning like a disco track in the 80s. My shifter was missing the gasket that goes between the shift and the floor, also this was the second shifter I received. The first one had no handle. Install was a bit of a pain esp when it comes to adjusting the cable ..... still fine tuning it.Helpful (1)

Will shifting with this hurt the tranny? Im very interested in purchasing this shifter theres just a few things i need to know. 1. Will it hurt the transmission shifitng like this? 2. How would i shift into 4th gear. 3. Do i have to let off the gas when shifting.? 4. Can you downshift while driving? And finally is there any preformance gain in this? Thank you for whoever answers. I drive an automatic stang and i want to make it so i have the option to shift safely! Is this the right product. And if not. What is?
this is a direct replacement for your factory shifter. It will not damage your transmission. 4th gear is controlled by the over drive switch just like your factory shifter.you do not have to let off gas to shift ether up or down . this shifter will allow you to shift manualy one gear at a time when in you want or just place in drive for for normal operation. as far as performance no but sure can make it fun to drive .
Is the red button the over drive ? If not where would the over drive button go ?
The red button is for overdrive.
Can you screw in a different shift knob? If so, what are the threads?
This is specifically designed to work with the shift knob that comes with it, and we would not recommend using another shift knob.
I was thinking about buying this but I just had one question. How exactly do you operate this?
The B&M Hammer Console Automatic Transmission Ratchet Shifter will have a shift pattern that starts similar to your OEM Shift pattern, but will vary at the end. It will go, Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and then the manual mode which will allow you to pull back ward to upshift, and push forward to downshift. There is also a good explanation in the video on this page, with visuals.
This might be a stupid queastion but do you have to let off the gas before you shift into gears?
Shifting with this shifter is no different than stock as far as the mechanics go.
Yes, this shifter will work on a 1996 V6 Mustang with an AODE 4R70W transmission.
this works the same as your stock shifter . you have 2 options put in drive and go ,or you can control what gear your in .using the shift up or down it will shift one gear at a time like a stick shift with out missing a shift . really nice
With proper use shifting would not damage your transmission.
This shifter will only work with the AODE transmission.
This will not work with the C4 trans no.
This ratchet shifter includes the neutral safety switch, backup light switch, lighted gear indicator, leather shift boot, and polished aluminum T-Handle.
The description is stating the OEM shifter has serious drawbacks for strip use. This is primarily that manually shifting with the stock shifter is very inaccurate.
The B&M Hammer Console Automatic Transmission Ratchet Shifter can be used with this setup, however minor modifications may be required as the 4R70W was not the stock transmission for that Vehicle.
