Review & Install Video

Hey, guys. Stephanie with AmericanMuscle.com here with my review of the C&L Street Cold Air Intake, available for the 2015 and up Mustang GT. The C&L Street Cold Air Intake is going to be for the S550 GT owners out there who are looking for a closed element cold air intake that also keeps the direct cold air feed that Ford has created from factory. But that doesn't necessarily require a computer re-tune. A cold air intake is normally one of the first mods that many Mustang owners go to. But a lot of times the question of "Is a tune required?" has an impact on the intake that is chosen. And the C&L right here is an option that brings other benefits besides just performance gains to the table, but without requiring a tune. But speaking of gains, let's break the numbers down first before getting into the intake. We already ran a baseline run and got some numbers in the book. So we're going to run the car again with the C&L installed. Now we did pair a 93 octane tune with the intake, even though this intake does not require a tune. But we wanted to see the full potential that the intake has, and here's what we found. Our baseline run with our 2015 GT gave us numbers of 387 horsepower and 365 foot pounds of torque at the rear wheels. With the C&L in tune installed those numbers changed to 412 horsepower and 387 foot pounds of torque, making for a peak gain of 25 horsepower over those baseline numbers. Our gains throughout the curve showed as much as 34 horsepower and 33 foot pounds of torque right in that 4,000 to 5,500 RPM range. These are the gains that you're actually going to notice when you're driving, especially in this RPM range. Now since we did pair this with a tune, keep in mind that a lot of the gains that you're seeing will be attributed to that tune. If we take a closer look at the C&L, it's first off by popular intake on the site, and one that's going to come in at the top of the line in-regards to price at right around $400. But also in quality and fitment as well. And all of C&L's products are built and tested in the USA, which is just something that I like to point out. But looking at the specifics here, this does include a reusable filter that you can easily wash and re-oil when it gets a little dirty. And it's not the biggest filter that I've seen for an aftermarket S550 cold air intake. But it's not the smallest either. One of the big things that I wanted to point out with this intake though is the housing here. First of all, it's enclosed, which you're only going to see from other options like Airaid and JLT right now. It has a plexiglass lid that's removable, so you can get to your filter easily, or see without having to take the air-box apart. The other cool thing about the housing is that it taps into the cold air duct, which brings cool air in from the grill instead of using warm engine compartment air. And like I mentioned earlier, this particular intake does not require a tune. But the small gains and drive-ability that you'll see from the intake alone can be greatly amplified by running a tune, just as a side note. As for the install, it's nothing too difficult, and the intake will come with all of the items that you'll need, including your clamps and your hardware. All you really need to complete the install is a few sockets and a Flathead for the plastic pins. This is probably one of the easier mods that you can tackle with your new Mustang and will probably take about a half hour to an hour tops. And I'm going to call this a one out of three wrenches on our scale. Wrapping things up here, I think the C&L Street Intake is a well built intake that works with an enclosed air-box and taps into that cold air duct that Ford has provided for the intake. It fits well and has a decent sized reusable filter, and it does not require a tune. You can check this intake out more online for yourself, and for all things Mustang keep it right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

Maximum Airflow For More Power. Improve the horsepower, torque and fuel efficiency of your coyote powered S550 GT Mustang by replacing the restrictive factory air box and paper filter element with a C&L Performance high flow intake tube and filter assembly to increase air flow. C&L intakes are dyno tuned and tested for maximum performance and efficiency.

No Tune Required. This C&L Performance Street Cold Air Intake is designed to improve the performance of your 5.0L V8 coyote powered Pony without the need of reprogramming your Mustang computer. By utilizing state of the art computer-aided designs this C&L Intake will increase power using the factory tune.

Rechargeable High Flow Filter. Included with your C&L Cold Air Kit is a high-flow, reusable, rechargeable filter. That means no more spending money on OEM paper filters that waste money and horsepower. Just clean your C&L filter, re-oil it, and put it back on to save money and enjoy better performance in one shot.

Easy Installation. C&L Cold Air Intake kits are designed to install with just basic hand tools. No extra modifications or special tools are required for an easy 1 hour installation. All parts and instructions are included.

Recommended Upgrade. Even though a re-tune is not required for operation, AmericanMuscle recommends a custom tune with a Mustang Handheld Tuner to reprogram the vehicles computer (ECU) to get the best possible performance out of this cold air intake.

Application. This C&L Performance Street Cold Air Intake System is specifically designed for use on 2015-2017 GT Mustangs equipped with the DOHC 4-valve 5.0L Coyote V8 engine.

If I was to purchase this CAI does it come with a cap to kill the fake engine noise? Also? Does it have a removable MVT? What is the diameter of the pipe and filter? Lastly, does it have more performance gains if you install the CAI with out the top piece of the air box, in order to let it breathe more?

      • The C&L Street Cold Air Intake does not have any type of removable venturi tube. C&L does not publish the inside diameter of this cold air intake, and we have not yet measured this yet. No cap is included for deleting the sound tube that allows resonant engine noises to enter the cabin. We have not found any additional gains when installing this CAI with the clear top removed.

Hello! It works on the 87mm Throttle Body? I’m going to need any kind of tune?

          Good improvement from stock

The instructions for this product are poor. The fitment was challenging and very tight when putting it together. The washers provided are not large enough for the screws. As for the install I had to muscle it on to line up the intake box, tube and throttle at the same time, unlike what the instructions and video show. Overall I like the product and the results. I have noticed a change in the exhaust sound and the throttle response has improved. Over all it took me a couple hours for the install because of the fitment issues.

          Love it!

Looks great! Sounds great! It’s a snug fit so there was a bit of finessing done to install but overall it’s great! I did have to plug off one of the small inlets on the intake tube for my 17 Mustang Gt which wasn’t explained in the install instructions.

          Good Product, Horrible Instructions

Love the look and the extra airflow. Also like that it’s CARB certified. The instructions were a solid 3/10. The screws didn’t fit through the washers provided. Had to use a drill and widen the holes. Pretty tight fit all the way around which is common for an intake. Gains should be nice with a tune, but the install process was not as seemless as these videos make it appear. Took over 2 hours from start to finish. Would have taken no longer than an hour, If the instructions were clearer and the washers provided were actually useful from the beginning Solid product tho if your looking for a CARB certified intake with solid gains

          C L Intake

Once installed, it's been a great addition. The intake was missing several screws and washers and I ended up having to take it to Ford to have installed...that added $150 to the purchase which was frustrating.

          Excellent Product!

This is a great bolt-on for the coyote engine. Looks fantastic when I raise the hood and adds a noticeable punch when I get on the throttle. Can't wait to add a tune!

          Awesome. Immediate gains!

I bought the car with a cat back already on it, but thr intake was still restricted. Once this was added, and the C and L throttle body, it had a more responsive and more powerful acceleration. Loved it. Worth the money.

          Good performance

Great if you install a tune to go with it. I will say you won’t feel much of anything without a tune. Also for the 17 model mustang there is a extra vacuum that you will have to plug off.

Bought this for my son's 2016 GT and it was a great but! Super easy to install (less than 2 hours), no tune required (we decided to do one anyway). The GT breathes so much better. Great product for a quick performance hike.

          Awesome Add

This intake looks beautiful inside my 2016 GT. I already have x pipes and flow master super 40s so I didn’t notice much of a sound difference but you can feel it. When opened up 3-4K rpm you can feel the extra surge of Air. The kit comes complete with another filter delete and extra hoses as well. I’m very impressed and will be adding a tuner soon.

C L Street Cold Air Intake Terrible Prduct support

I would like to start off by saying that there is nothing bad to say about the intake itself, it was a nice compliment to my mustangs engine bay and it sounded great, I didn’t dyno it but it felt pretty good after I installed it. Shortly after the install, i had to remove the intake to replace my belt and i accidentally damaged the Venturi that goes inside the tube, no Company wants to provide any customer support. I contacted American Muscle and they sent me to Airaid ( which was supposed to be the manufacturer of the CandL intake) then i found out KandN was actually making both the Airaid and CandL intakes and for some reason they only provide support for the Airaid one and not the CandL one ?? CandL doesn’t even have a website. Needless to say I only got to enjoy my intake for a few days. I’m not going to buy another one, and I doubt any of the companies that should provide customer service will do anything about it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Install was a bit tight but once I muscled it in it was fine. Gained about 1mpg, haven't had a chance to tune it yet so can't comment on horsepower.
