- How to Install Door Insert Covers - Red on your Mustang
The Method Works door insert covers in red are available for any 2005 to 2009 Mustang owner looking to add some luxury to their interior, while covering up a worn-out, possibly sagging door panel. Considering that these are real leather and they are pretty affordable as a replacement, they'll come in just about $150 a set. The installation is a bit involved, so I will be giving this two out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter. If you're the owner of an early S197, you may have fallen victim to the saggy door panel trim after a couple of years. Since the adhesive on the back of the trim is pretty weak, after years of hot and cold temperature changes, they can tend to fall off and leave a nasty foam behind. The thing about this is they can't really be put back on very easily without new adhesive. Picking up a replacement takes a lot of the hassle away and gives it a cleaner, newer look. This will be a direct replacement for the factory floppy trim. They won't shrink and expand constantly with the weather like the old stuff, and since they're real Italian leather, they look a lot better too. If you've got the red leather interior from the factory, which is pretty rare, this'll be a perfect color-match that you can't find anywhere else. If not, they'll look good with most of the other interior packages as well, in my personal opinion. Now, even though they are real Italian leather, the price stays pretty affordable, just north of the $150 mark. Now, if you went to an upholstery shop, you'd probably be spending an arm and a leg for a replacement. So this'll be a perfect saver of time and patience, as well as money. Like I said in the very beginning, this one is going to be very involved and time-consuming. Now, if you're really not comfortable tackling the door panels on and off, and getting into the detail of trimming the leather to fit properly and taping off the area around it, setting the adhesive properly, and so on and so forth, we would definitely recommend taking this to a shop to get done 100% correctly. Since it is such a tedious job, I'll be giving this a strong two out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter. It'll take about three hours or so for the install. If you're the owner of an early S197, I'm talking 2005 to 2009 Mustangs, you might want to check out the Method Works door insert covers in red, which are available right here at americanmuscle.com.

I would not recommend trying to do this yourself. It literally took all day to install on just one door. This is something I would definitely pay someone else to do instead of trying it yourself. I did not realize that this insert would require so much cutting, and it was very hard to position.Helpful (2)

If you have upholstery experience this is a pretty straight forward install. If not, do the passenger side first... you learn a lot doing the first one. We were 2 seconds from calling it quits and getting them done at a shop. The passenger side was tuff, you don’t know how to trim and not leave too much or too little. Or making sure the blue tape is not anywhere you want glue. In the end they look great, we know the imperfections... most people wouldn’t but still I would never do this again. It is a small job, but unless you have good skills, let the upholstery guys do it and save yourself a few hours of frustration.Helpful (2)

Door insert covers
My 05 GT’s door inserts were falling down and after many attempts to get it to stay up. I went and got these new inserts and am very satisfied with how they came out. Don’t cost a whole lot and change the whole look of your doorHelpful (0)

This is not an easy install. One wrong move and your money is wasted. I used a razer blade and made a bad cut. All my money went in the trash. Just pay someone to do this project.Helpful (1)

Red Door inserts
These door inserts are Italian leather, very nice quality to work with. Love that they are precut to fit your door . Only down fall is you have to do alot of trimming prior to install. Other than that , they are very impressiveHelpful (0)
What type glue is used
The Alterum Door Insert Covers does not include any glue or adhesive. We suggest using some sort of spray fabric glue for proper adhesion. Though, we do recommend taking this to a shop for proper installation.
My 2006 has all the fabric backing removed and just has the plastic showing. Will padding need to be added or can these be glued up directly to the plastic?
The Alterum Door Insert Covers are designed to be installed directly to the plastic. Further install details can be seen at the link below: https://lib.americanmuscle.com/files/102217-cust.pdf
Do you need to take to door panels off? Or can this be done by just peeling off the old inserts and replacing them.
No, alot of Mustangs do have peeling problems by nature so you can just peel it off. Make sure you have something thin to tuck in the edges.
Does this come in any other colors? Can I request a color if possible?
At this time, we currently only offer the door insert covers in black or red.
I just got these in the mail. You guys recommend taking to an upholstery shop so I will get some quotes. But if I wanted to do it myself, what glue is recommended? I have a 3M spray from Home Depot labeled "90 Hi Strength" would this work
To install the Alterum Door Insert Covers we would recommend 3M Foam and Fabric adhesive, or a similar upholstery adhesive that can bond to both the insert, and the door panel.
Unfortunately these inserts are only available as a pair.
