    Review & Install Video

Hey guys, Stephanie with americanmuscle.com, here with the Mishimoto Baffled Oil Separator System for 2015 and up EcoBoost Mustangs. We're gonna go over a few things with the Mishimoto Oil Separator System here, but mostly we'll talk about the kit's functionality and the install. I'll talk more about the install later, but I'm gonna call this one a one outta three wrenches in the difficulty meter. The Mishimoto Oil Separator System is a catch can setup that plugs into the PCV line and it's a great way to protect an engine. It's a simple mod that does some good for all applications. You don't need to have a forced induction set up to build and utilize a catch can, but in the case of the turbocharged EcoBoost, it's especially important. A catch can may not be one of the first mods that's on your list or may not even be on your list at all, but it's a very functional piece and it has benefits to it that do good for any engine. So if we go back to the process of an internal combustion engine for a second, I can explain the benefits of an oil catch can like this one here. So the ignition of the air and fuel mixture inside of the combustion chamber is ignited and it forces the piston downwards. There's a small amount of the mixture that leaks past the piston rings and into the crankcase. This is known as blow-by and in that blow-by, there's an oil mist. The blow-by and the oil mist will settle in the intake and over time they're gonna form a gunky buildup. Now technically speaking, there can also sometimes be some condensation along with the oil mist and the blow-by, and if you let all this hangout, worse case, this stuff can make it into the oil inside of the crankcase. This is not a good thing and that's considered oil contamination and dilution. So you got your PCV valve to help fight this issue. Now a PCV valve alone has its own list of weaknesses and engines have regulations as far as emissions go. Enter into the scene the oil separating catch can. It's gonna push these gasses, the blow-by and the oil mist and condensation, through a baffle system that's gonna trap the oil and separate it from the other gasses. The gasses are then gonna be allowed to continue through the intake so that they can be burned off and the oil will stay in the catch can so it doesn't move on and cause issues for the engine. So this is a single can that mounts in line with the PCV system. Inside it has a 50 micron bronze filter that's gonna separate the oil from the air and the other gasses. The can itself has a good amount of capacity and you'll notice that the better catch cans actually catch a lot of oil. So the larger capacity of this can means that you won't have to empty it all the time, go a little bit longer in between servicing. And the bottom of this just unscrews when you wanna empty it. It's sealed with an o-ring, so it won't leak at all. The kit is gonna include everything that you'll need for the install here. You have your mounting brackets so you can mount this. It's gonna sit right near the PCV valve and it's going to be positioned so that the can is in an easily accessible area so when you do need to empty it, it isn't a fight. It's also gonna come with direct fit silicon hoses that have some preinstalled, stock style quick disconnect fittings which will make the install so easy. They'll be completely plug and play and it doesn't get any more straightforward than this. And the can itself is a billet aluminum can that's sealed like I mentioned earlier, and of course, it's powder coated black. As far as price, you're looking at spending between 100 and 200 bucks for this catch can from Mishimoto. Now one thing I will say about catch cans in general, is to be wary. You wanna make sure that you're getting a good one that'll trap as much oil as possible. Some catch cans are just an empty container with a few ports, but these kinds are not gonna condense the oil vapor and trap as much oil as possible. You wanna make sure that the catch can has an internal baffling collection system like this one does. So the install here is really pretty easy. You're looking at spending an hour tops, and this is gonna be a one outta three wrenches in the difficulty meter. You just need some basic hand tools to get this all done, and I'd start by assembling the can itself, getting your mounting brackets together and on and all the fittings into place. The engine cover will need to be popped off so you can get to your PCV area which is right behind the throttle body. You're gonna end up swapping your stock PCV hoses for the Mishimoto ones and you can remove your factory hoses. All of their hoses just snap into place. The fittings install into the catch can and the can then attaches to the bracket and installs in the car. Then it's just a matter of installing the hoses to the can and getting your cover back on. Mishimoto recommends emptying the catch can every thousand miles, so just make sure you check on it. Wrapping things up here, the Mishimoto Baffled Oil Catch Can is a fast and easy way to protect the motor of the boosted S-550 from blow-by. This is a catch can kit that has an internal baffle and storage system. The can is made from billet aluminum and it comes with direct fit hoses. You can check it out more online right here at americanmuscle.com.

Reduces Engine Sludge. In your EcoBoost Mustang's engine, crankcase exhaust "blow-by" is re-circulated back through your PCV system and intake, taking with it large amounts of oil vapor which can gum up your turbocharged engine. A Mishimoto Air/Oil Separator (a.k.a. catch can) installs in your PCV line to filter out this contaminated oil vapor before it can re-enter your engine's intake and cause damage.

Internally Baffled Design. This Mishimoto Oil Separator features an internally baffled design that causes turbulence to the incoming air for improved air/oil separation and the included 50 micron bronze filter prevents smaller oil particles from re-entering the intake system.

Superior Quality. Manufactured from 100% billet 6061 aluminum, this Mishimoto Oil Separator is completed in a black anodized finish for superior durability and impressive style. The base can easily be removed for draining during routine oil changes and is designed with a rubber o-ring for a tight leak-free seal.

Simple Plug-N-Play Install. Including factory style PCV silicone hoses with pre-attached stock-style connectors, installation of this Mishimoto Air/Oil Separator is a straight forward plug-and-play operation.

Application. This Mishimoto Baffled Air/Oil Separator with black silicone hoses is designed for use on all 2015-2017 EcoBoost Mustangs.

If this product simply keeps the engine cleaner, why is it not CARB-compliant? It seems CARB would encourage such a product rather than condemn it. Does this oil separator increase the amount of any environmentally-unfriendly compounds, namely engine oil but anything else either, that are released into the atmosphere? If so, what impact would that have on the catalytic converter system?

    7

    • Unfortunately CARB Compliance is a very expensive process that not all manufacturers choose to submit their products to. The MBRP Catted H-Pipe - Stainless Steel will simply reduce the amount of oil able to make it through the PCV system, and into the combustion chamber. While this does help the car to burn cleaner, it would require going through the process to be issued a CARB EO Number, which Mishimoto has not done.

Ive had my ecoboost for 2 years, is it too late to buy this catch can. Is there already carbon build up? Not sure if this will pull out the existing carbon that is already there.

    Giantsfan1121

    • The Mishimoto Direct Fit Baffled Oil Separator System is recommend and can be installed regardless of the age of the vehicle; Later is better than never. This will not clean out any oil that has already passed through the intake path, however this would prevent further build up.

      Oil catch can

the process of putting it on was simple and easy but taking the old hose off was a pain, the bottom clip is facing up and you can really use two hands to reach in and use, other than that point and getting the top new hose on rather simple and easy.

      Looks OG

Love the way the catch can stands out on the engine bay. Install was a little tricky on the bottom hose, please note that the car needs to be lifted in order to access it but other than that it's pretty straight forward. Would definitely recommend this product for those looking to prevent any oil from falling into the PCV/Crankcase and improving engine life overall.

      Great

All parts were a great fit, had ramps for install and took less than an hour to complete. PCV connection below the engine has a slight give after locking the new connection, must be fine because Car runs fine.

Great product. Should have come on the car.

The only reason I didn't give a 5 star rating is the lack of instructions with the kit. Had difficulty removing the stock hose clips and took a little time to figure the correct hose routing for the new kit. Once those things were figured out, everything fit like a glove. Very well engineered kit made with high quality parts. No performance gains, but will keep oil contamination from degrading the performance in the future by keeping it off your intake valves and out of your turbo.

Great Entry Level Can For OEM Setup

Good entry level catch can for a stock setup. Quick connect fitting for PCV and manifold side made installation a breeze. Hoses are higher quality than OEM, but probably overkill for this application. Plastic fittings on can side got a little loose after first 1000 miles and needed tightening. Mounting solution is clean but hardware is a bit on the “soft” side and could be easily damaged if repeatedly loosened/tightened. Recommend pre assembly of everything outside the vehicle, as well as unscrewing the can a couple times to make it easier in the future when installed, which is a bit awkward in the mounting location. Installation instructions are useless, but there are good videos out there that will help if you view beforehand.

      Plastic Barbed Fittings

Needs stronger fittings that goes into the catch can its self. The ones that they send you I feel like are really cheaply made and will break off over time. Other than that it's a great part and I will be replacing the plastic fittings with metal ones.

good product a little difficult to install

The biggest issue to this installation is the removal of the stock hose. To get to the hose end behind the throttle body its best to remove the belt tensioner (three bolts, no big deal). The lower hose end is much harder. Raise car, remove front left wheel and reach up to blind spot above starter solenoid. Have to remove the retaining clip using the Braille method. I found that using a small pick worked the best for removing retaining clips, while pushing in on hose. Unit came with no instructions so had to go to Mishimoto YouTube page to see which hose is which. Longer hose goes to throttle body. The catch can mounting bracket has several holes to allow for a couple of orientations. I found that having the elbow connections rotated more toward the firewall allows for easier access to unscrew the catch can, especially if you have a strut tower trace installed. The hose clamps that come with the kit are just typical worn gear clamps. I went to local hi-po store and picked up a couple of Earls clamps with anodized covers to dress it up a bit. A couple hundred miles running with catch can and just a little residual oil so far. About an hour and a half installation job start to finish.

Installed easy once I took the intake off. Took me 10 minutes to remove the intake, was able to get to the connectors easily, and installation was a breeze. Reinstalled the intake and done. Take your time, make sure you reconnect everything, and it will go well.

      High quality product

Being completely new to this ecoboost "craze" , it was a surprise to me to hear about the blow by issue . But it now makes sense that with direct injection there is a risk of deposits on the valves . This kit is of surprisingly high quality , and looks factory stock to boot . Highly recommended . I did spend about 3.5 hr's on installation , but I'm very picky with my Mustang , and until I viewed a video from another American muscle customer I was waisting time routing the front hose the wrong way . I do recommend Teflon tape on the plastic fittings , cause I could smell some oil around that area after driving 900 miles on a road trip . No oil in the cannister , just a light film . Very happy with my purchase .
