Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey guys, Stephanie with americanmuscle.com, here with the Mishimoto Baffled Oil Separator System for 2015 and up EcoBoost Mustangs. We're gonna go over a few things with the Mishimoto Oil Separator System here, but mostly we'll talk about the kit's functionality and the install. I'll talk more about the install later, but I'm gonna call this one a one outta three wrenches in the difficulty meter. The Mishimoto Oil Separator System is a catch can setup that plugs into the PCV line and it's a great way to protect an engine. It's a simple mod that does some good for all applications. You don't need to have a forced induction set up to build and utilize a catch can, but in the case of the turbocharged EcoBoost, it's especially important. A catch can may not be one of the first mods that's on your list or may not even be on your list at all, but it's a very functional piece and it has benefits to it that do good for any engine. So if we go back to the process of an internal combustion engine for a second, I can explain the benefits of an oil catch can like this one here. So the ignition of the air and fuel mixture inside of the combustion chamber is ignited and it forces the piston downwards. There's a small amount of the mixture that leaks past the piston rings and into the crankcase. This is known as blow-by and in that blow-by, there's an oil mist. The blow-by and the oil mist will settle in the intake and over time they're gonna form a gunky buildup. Now technically speaking, there can also sometimes be some condensation along with the oil mist and the blow-by, and if you let all this hangout, worse case, this stuff can make it into the oil inside of the crankcase. This is not a good thing and that's considered oil contamination and dilution. So you got your PCV valve to help fight this issue. Now a PCV valve alone has its own list of weaknesses and engines have regulations as far as emissions go. Enter into the scene the oil separating catch can. It's gonna push these gasses, the blow-by and the oil mist and condensation, through a baffle system that's gonna trap the oil and separate it from the other gasses. The gasses are then gonna be allowed to continue through the intake so that they can be burned off and the oil will stay in the catch can so it doesn't move on and cause issues for the engine. So this is a single can that mounts in line with the PCV system. Inside it has a 50 micron bronze filter that's gonna separate the oil from the air and the other gasses. The can itself has a good amount of capacity and you'll notice that the better catch cans actually catch a lot of oil. So the larger capacity of this can means that you won't have to empty it all the time, go a little bit longer in between servicing. And the bottom of this just unscrews when you wanna empty it. It's sealed with an o-ring, so it won't leak at all. The kit is gonna include everything that you'll need for the install here. You have your mounting brackets so you can mount this. It's gonna sit right near the PCV valve and it's going to be positioned so that the can is in an easily accessible area so when you do need to empty it, it isn't a fight. It's also gonna come with direct fit silicon hoses that have some preinstalled, stock style quick disconnect fittings which will make the install so easy. They'll be completely plug and play and it doesn't get any more straightforward than this. And the can itself is a billet aluminum can that's sealed like I mentioned earlier, and of course, it's powder coated black. As far as price, you're looking at spending between 100 and 200 bucks for this catch can from Mishimoto. Now one thing I will say about catch cans in general, is to be wary. You wanna make sure that you're getting a good one that'll trap as much oil as possible. Some catch cans are just an empty container with a few ports, but these kinds are not gonna condense the oil vapor and trap as much oil as possible. You wanna make sure that the catch can has an internal baffling collection system like this one does. So the install here is really pretty easy. You're looking at spending an hour tops, and this is gonna be a one outta three wrenches in the difficulty meter. You just need some basic hand tools to get this all done, and I'd start by assembling the can itself, getting your mounting brackets together and on and all the fittings into place. The engine cover will need to be popped off so you can get to your PCV area which is right behind the throttle body. You're gonna end up swapping your stock PCV hoses for the Mishimoto ones and you can remove your factory hoses. All of their hoses just snap into place. The fittings install into the catch can and the can then attaches to the bracket and installs in the car. Then it's just a matter of installing the hoses to the can and getting your cover back on. Mishimoto recommends emptying the catch can every thousand miles, so just make sure you check on it. Wrapping things up here, the Mishimoto Baffled Oil Catch Can is a fast and easy way to protect the motor of the boosted S-550 from blow-by. This is a catch can kit that has an internal baffle and storage system. The can is made from billet aluminum and it comes with direct fit hoses. You can check it out more online right here at americanmuscle.com.

Reduces Engine Sludge. In your EcoBoost Mustang's engine, crankcase exhaust "blow-by" is re-circulated back through your PCV system and intake, taking with it large amounts of oil vapor which can gum up your turbocharged engine. A Mishimoto Air/Oil Separator (a.k.a. catch can) installs in your PCV line to filter out this contaminated oil vapor before it can re-enter your engine's intake and cause damage.

Internally Baffled Design. This Mishimoto Oil Separator features an internally baffled design that causes turbulence to the incoming air for improved air/oil separation and the included 50 micron bronze filter prevents smaller oil particles from re-entering the intake system.

Superior Quality. Manufactured from 100% billet 6061 aluminum, this Mishimoto Oil Separator is completed in a black anodized finish for superior durability and impressive style. The base can easily be removed for draining during routine oil changes and is designed with a rubber o-ring for a tight leak-free seal.

Simple Plug-N-Play Install. Including factory style PCV silicone hoses with pre-attached stock-style connectors, installation of this Mishimoto Air/Oil Separator is a straight forward plug-and-play operation.

Application. This Mishimoto Baffled Air/Oil Separator with black silicone hoses is designed for use on all 2015-2017 EcoBoost Mustangs.

Is this separator legal in California?

  • Hello! The Mishimoto Direct Fit Baffled Oil Separator System is not CARB compliant

If this product simply keeps the engine cleaner, why is it not CARB-compliant? It seems CARB would encourage such a product rather than condemn it. Does this oil separator increase the amount of any environmentally-unfriendly compounds, namely engine oil but anything else either, that are released into the atmosphere? If so, what impact would that have on the catalytic converter system?

7

  • Unfortunately CARB Compliance is a very expensive process that not all manufacturers choose to submit their products to. The MBRP Catted H-Pipe - Stainless Steel will simply reduce the amount of oil able to make it through the PCV system, and into the combustion chamber. While this does help the car to burn cleaner, it would require going through the process to be issued a CARB EO Number, which Mishimoto has not done.

I'm trying to find out if this will fail Colorado emissions. Is there a simple way to find that information?

JoshB

  • Unfortunately we are not well versed in Colorado's Emissions program, however typically oil separators are passable under most emission testing standards, including PA's Emissions testing, where we are located, and California, which is considered to be the strictest in the country. We would recommend checking with a local emissions inspection station to confirm your local laws and regulations.

Ive had my ecoboost for 2 years, is it too late to buy this catch can. Is there already carbon build up? Not sure if this will pull out the existing carbon that is already there.

Giantsfan1121

  • The Mishimoto Direct Fit Baffled Oil Separator System is recommend and can be installed regardless of the age of the vehicle; Later is better than never. This will not clean out any oil that has already passed through the intake path, however this would prevent further build up.

I have had these with other cars and they recommend you remove them when the temp drops below freezing. I drive my mustang year round is there any issue with this. Can the water freeze when shut off plugging up the can or lines and plowing the seal on the motor.

JohnP

  • Water can freeze in the Mishimoto Direct Fit Baffled Oil Separator System when it is cold, however, since the lines would have oil in them, it should not clog the lines. Additionally, once the car warms up, the engine heat will help melt any ice.

    Tough Install

Nice looking product. Can was almost impossible to open. Had to use a vise to open it. There was no lubrication on the o-ring. Once lubricated, it works fine. Disconnecting the bottom clip on the stock hose is difficult due to accessibility. Otherwise, fine product.

This part was fairly easy to install. You just have to disconnect the pcv line and replace it with the rubber hoses provided. The can mounts to the frame with one bolt and you hose clamp the hoses in place. I've had it on my car for a few weeks and I just took the can off and I can see a small amount of liquid inside. I would say it's definitly doing its job.

    Good Product

Great product and very easy to install. Attention Ecoboost owners ensure you have your dealer check the oil separator on the block underneath the intake. Due to a faulty part that causes smoke at idle they have a service bulletin out to replace it if it is one that does not have a bar code on it. If you put the car on a lift and look on the drivers side underneath the intake manifold where the hose for the oil separator goes to that should have a bar code. If it smokes then this part needs to be replaced first. The ones that are faulty are not high flowing enough that is why it will smoke at idle rpm's. One replaced it will take care of the issue.

Overall its an easy Installation, but it can definely get tricky because of the location, the worst part is getting the original piping off, once you get that out of the way its a pretty easy install but not as easy and fast as I was expecting.

    nice product no instructions included

The catch can is sturdy and the quick connects are terrific! there were no instructions in the box only a link to mishimoto website for installation. Theoretically it should only take a few minutes to install but ended up taking longer because of how the fittings are angled on the manifold. I ended up having to wiggle and massage the tubes into place.

    Mishimoto Catch Can

Great product and great quality from Mishimoto as always, that being said I do have a couple minor gripes, the catch can does NOT come with any instructions just advertising and a small sheet of paper that says to watch their youtube video (which isn't very helpful) or a link to print off instructions. Thankfully there are other videos on can watch to see how to do it. Other biggest thing is that they advertise it as a 30 min install. Even with a lift its not a 30 min install, it took 45 mins to get the factory hose off, then another 30 to get the two new hoses properly clipped in but besides that it is a really nice product and I highly recommend it if you plan on keeping your mustang as long as I plan on keeping mine.

    Have Turbo? Need Catch Can.

My father is currently going through a mess on his '06 F-250 because he has no CCV catch can and oil is ruining his turbo. The install on this isn't horribly difficult and it's one of those 'down the road you'll appreciate it' mods. Don't think about it, just do it.

    Worth the effort

Something that Ford should have put on the EcoBoost in the first place. Excellent design and first class manufacture. Should help eliminate oil deposits (Carbon buildup) on intake valves. Use the black hoses for a factory look......Use a lift for installation, saves time.

Good product but inventory the pieces first!

This is a OE quality piece for sure, especially in the black color. Looks as if it was factory. The time on the install is very deceiving. I have a automotive degree with years of experience in cars as my daily job and had no issue with this install however the time listed for this may be troublesome for the avg person. The small right areas will be a headache for the normal person on the intake side and the block side. Especially since I did this with jack stands. However doable. Also please check your packaging and take a inventory on your pieces in this kit. Mine came shipped missing 1 hose clamp for the hoses. I noticed this before doing anything so I just went to the local parts store and got one however if this is your only car and you take the factory pcv line off without realizing this you could be in for a headache. Just please make sure all the pieces are in the kit. Everything comes in its individual bag sealed. Mine just however was missing a clamp as of the person packaging forgot to put it in. Other than that great product!

Not hard to install but a lift is needed also remove belt tensioner ( 4 bolts ) .If the car had more engine room it would only take about 5 min. I think mishimoto is the best for operation , looks and fitment ,using silicon colored preformed hoses is the best !

    Quality and Value

First, there really is no performance gain, that is not the point of the catch can to begin with, but preventing the crud to return to your crank case over time maintain your engine's health and thus performance. Easy install, no need to get under the car, just remove the air cleaner box or CAI if you've added one. Double check all your fittings and you're done. Looks great under the hood, I got the blue, it's a Ford!

    Fantastic Direct Fit Catch can

Install was a bit tricky, the lower hose coming out of the block is tough to get at, you will need to jack your car up in order to get to it, do t forget to be safe and use jack stands. After getting the hoses all connected it's easy. Don't forget to open the catch can, mine had extra fittings tucked away in it, so good thing I looked.
