Prop Rod? Are you still using that old style factory prop rod that Ford installed in your S197 Mustang? Well then join the new millennium with a set of Modern Muscle Design Hood Struts from AmericanMuscle for clean modern looks and convenience.

Style And Strength. Designed to get rid of that old ugly prop rod, this set of two powerful yet sleek MMD gas struts not only makes opening your Pony's hood much easier, but also holds it securely in place. Made from lightweight steel and aluminum, they have a black powercoated finish to give your engine bay a much cleaner appearance.

No Drilling Required. The stamped steel brackets included in this MMD kit are designed to bolt into the existing mounting holes in the hood so there is no drilling required for installation. Struts can be installed on factory hoods as well as aftermarket hoods that use the factory bolt location. If your aftermarket hood is lighter than the factory hood, use caution when opening the hood due to the power of the strut.

Installation. Taking approximately one hour to install, this kit includes two black gas powered struts, mounting brackets, and all the required mounting hardware.

Application. This Modern Muscle Design Hood Strut Kit is specifically designed for use on the 2005 to 2009 Ford Mustangs, including the V6, GT, Bullitt and Shelby GT500 models.

Mounting require hood removal? With bolt on install, can you leave hood in place with prop rod & install one side at a time or is this a 2 man job with hood removal? Thanx

        • You can do it by yourself, I did, however it would be easier if you had another set of hands. just follow the instructions and do not fully remove the bolts holding the hood, remove the front bolt and then loosen the back bolt. You will have to push the hood away from the factory bracket to get the hood strut bracket sandwiched in between, then tighten the bolt and then then reinstall the front bolt. The one thing that happened on both sides is the bolts on the fender appeared to strip as they could not be tightened fully but they do hold and I have not had a problem with them. Good luck and one of the better mods I made as no prop rod to get in the way.

Are there replacement struts? After just a couple of years they struts that came with this kit will no longer hold up my hood. Are the struts Vehicle specific?

        • Unfortunately there is no warranty on these hood struts so the only way to get a replacement would be to buy another pair, although it never hurts to call in and speak with a customer service representative to see if there is anything they can do. And yes, these struts are specifically designed for 05-14 Mustangs.

Strength? Are these strong enough to hold up a fiberglass hood? My hood is heavy and the Drake struts are not able to hold..

        • I have a Tru-Fiber hood on my '11 and these struts work wonderful. I don't think you will have any problems.

Is anybody aware of any replacement strut part numbers out there on the market for these? Mine are 4 years old but have barely been used. They have failed! In fact, they almost smashed someone's hand at a car show when the hood fell. American Muscle says they aren't warrantied - but their product doesn't work after a handful of uses. Please tell me someone's figured out a replacement strut for these that isn't garbage!!! 1 answer

            Great product.

I installed the "Bolt On Hood Strut Kit" in approximately one hour with no problem what so ever. It was easy and trouble free with no drilling and only a couple of tools. It works great and I'm glad I don't have to use that antiquated hood rod. Thank you MMD. William A.

Fits Great But The Struts Don't Last!

The cars driven 3000 miles a year on average and we just don't need to open the hood more than ten times a year at the most. The struts lasted just over three years before failing to hold the hood up. Pros: fit well, look factory and do a nice job when new. Cons: struts just don't last.

For $80 they could have sent better struts, however that could just be considered a user install failure, everything else went together smooth

            hood strut kit

This is the poorest design I have ever dealt with. Had no problem installing on our 11 GT but the struts for our 07 Shelby GT500 sucked!! Did not fit, could not get the socket on the ball of each strut. Had to turn bracket to make it work, now a 1/2 gap on lower fender bracket. Noisy when we open or close. Would not recommend this product for older vehicle at all!

            Terrible Product

I spent several hours over the weekend trying to get these to work on my 13' gt. First off, the balls are nearly impossible to get into the socket. Secondly, once I resolved problem one and mounted to my hood, they would not clear the fenders. They are too large/wide to allow me to close my hood. Terrible design. 1 star all around, definitely not happy with this product.

            Bolt on Struts

Product hardware was easy to install. The struts only lasted 3 years and had to be replaced. For the money, I bought another kit. However, the struts would not fit onto the ball socket of existing hardware. Changed that hardware and they still don't fit.

            MMD Hood Struts

A fantastic product that should honestly be on all modern cars from the factory. This product really cleans up the engine bay, just by the lack of the lame hood brace being in the front. In addition to this, the hood is elevated higher allowing you to reach areas close to the firewall easier. To make installation easier the braces have a pin in them that can be removed and reinserted to allow the ball joint to fit.

Install is easier with an extra pair of hands. Loved them 4 2 years then they lost the power to keep the hood up - found that out the hard way when the hood smacked me in the head. No warranty or desire to replace.

            2nd set of struts

This is my 2nd set of struts in 3 years; they work well but their life is limited. And when they fail, they fail completely, so best to not remove your 'original equipment' hood-support prop rod and keep it in place and available while using the hood struts so you're prepared when they fail; it's a good back-up that you don't appreciate until you need it. They're are other brands of struts that are more expensive, and I don't know if that translates to longer life, but I'm happy enough with these if I get 2-3 years out of them at this price.

This is one of the first modifications I made to my Mustang when I first bought it. Worked great with the original hood and with the aftermarket fiberglass Hood I bought from American Muscle. They finally gave out after about four years.
