Hi I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and this is TPMS 101. This video is going to show you everything you need to know about the TPMS sensors in your 2007 and up Mustang, why you need them, how to wire them, and most importantly how to sync them up to your ride. For those of you who don’t know, TPMS stands for tire pressure monitoring system and is standard equipment on all 2007 and up Mustangs. The actual sensor itself is located on the bottom of each of your valve stems, located on all 4 wheels. As you might have guessed, the whole purpose of this system is simply to alert you, the driver, when tire pressures reach an unsafe level, plain and simple. So why do you need them? Well, if you buy a new set of wheels and tires and you don’t install TPMS sensors, you will trigger a warning light on your dash, which depending on your state laws, could cause you to fail your vehicle inspection. Ok, so that covers the what and the why, so now let’s cover how you order them, it’s actually pretty simple. If you’re ordering one of our pre-built tire and wheel combinations, simply click on the TPMS kit dropdown box located on all tire and wheel combination pages. At this point, you’ll simple want to select the correct generation, whether it’s an 07-09, or 2010 and up. This kit will include all the sensors which are preinstalled on all your wheels, the TPMS syncing tool, along which a DVD with step-by-step instructions on how to sync the sensors to your ride. When it does come time to sync your new sensors to your ride you’ll need a couple of things, of course you’ll need your TPMS syncing tool along with your key. A couple of important pointers before we get started with this process, the TPMS syncing tool works on a specific radio signal, so you’ll want to make sure you don’t have any cell phones, walkie talkies, or radios around that could possibly cause any interference. Second, you’ll want to make sure you do this process about 10-20 feet away from other vehicles, again just to avoid any problems. To begin the syncing process, insert the key into the ignition and turn the key from the off to the on position 3 times, the third time leaving the key in the on position, without actually starting the car. With the key in the on position, press the brake pedal to the floor and then release it. At this point turn the key from the off to the on position 3 more times, once again leaving it in the on position the third and final time. At this point you should hear the horn honk to indicate that the TPMS sensors are ready to be synced to your ride, using the TPMS syncing tool. With the key still in the on position, head to the left front tire. You’ll need to hold the syncing tool to the valve stem making sure the arrow on the tool is aligned with the valve itself, hold the green button down and wait for the horn to honk, this means the tire has been synced to your ride properly. Repeat that step for the right front, the right rear, and finally the left rear. If you forget the order, just look at the display in the speedometer, it will tell you what tire to sync next. If you’re having problems with the sensors not being detected and the horn doesn’t sound in the syncing process, then deflate all 4 tires and let the car sit for 5 minutes, after that reinflate the tires to the manufacturers recommended PSI, then restart the syncing process. Since the wheels and TPMS sensors are programmed specifically for each location, you will need to resync your TPMS sensors every time you rotate your tires, otherwise you’ll receive inaccurate readings that could trigger a warning light. If you follow the detailed instructions I talked about here and on the included DVD, you should have no problems getting your TPMS sensors synced to your ride properly. As always if you do encounter a problem, give us a call, one of our AmericanMuscle customer service reps will be happy to help you out.

Important Tire Rotation Note. When rotating tires that are equipped with TPMS sensors it is important to reuse the TPMS Transmitter Tool to recalibrate the sensors. By rotating your tires you are changing the physical location of the sensors and your cars computer will need to update to be aware of this location change. Failure to do so will result in inaccurate and incorrect low tire pressure monitoring.
