      Video Review & Installation

Hey, guys. Stephanie here and today we're gonna be taking a look at the Wilwood AERO6 front brake kit that comes with a red caliper and two-piece slotted and drilled rotors for all 2005 to 2014 Mustangs. This kit is gonna be for anyone that's looking to do a serious upgrade for big braking power. Going with a big brake setup is a serious upgrade that usually provides serious results. Oftentimes, big brake upgrades are necessary for performance, whether it be drag strip or track and they help reduce weight too. With this kit, Wilwood ensures a big capacity braking. You get bumped up to a two-piece rotor and all without having to spend an arm and a leg. This is ideal for street and track use and it is compatible with the OE master cylinder output and ABS function. Costs right about $2,000 and I will say this is gonna be a two out of three wrenches in the difficulty meter. Big brake kits are an expensive upgrade. This kit is specifically made to provide big brake performance for show and dual purpose street and track vehicles. So it's made to both look good and perform well. Of course, then you also have the added benefit of weight reduction when you upgrade to a two-piece rotor and not only are you looking at an overall lighter car, but you're looking at reducing the weight that's on the tire. A lighter rotor means lower spinning weight. Without getting into too much detail here, weight does play a role when it comes down to braking performance. Basically what braking comes down to can be summed up by saying that the maximum braking force that a tire can have is theoretically equal to the coefficient of friction of the tire-road interface multiplied by the amount of weight being supported by that corner of the car and this is where the weight comes into play. Braking force is directly proportional to the force of the pads and the calipers and rotors so reducing weight on the tires reduces the maximum brake torque that the corner can handle before locking up.If we take a closer look at the kit itself, you're getting your two calipers, your install hardware, and two-piece rotors. Of course, the calipers are powder-coated red so not only will they look good but the powder coating will give corrosion resistance and keep them looking good over time. I mentioned this earlier but this kit will work with the OE master cylinder and the ABS function and of course, you get a new set of front brake pads too. The big change-up with this kit as opposed to your stock setup is gonna lie in the rotors. So two-piece rotors are always gonna be an upgrade over single-piece rotors. For those of you that aren't familiar with two-piece rotors, if you take a look at these, you'll see that the center of the rotor or the hat is separate from the ring. The main benefit of a two-piece rotor like this is heat dissipation. With better heat dissipation, you get better performance. You get better heat dissipation with a two-piece rotor because the center of the rotor is not one piece with the ring. The ring is where all of the heat is and in a one-piece rotor, the heat can easily transfer to the hat and then the whole rotor will hold heat. With a two-piece rotor, the transfer isn't as great. The outer ring will deal with the heat by itself and the inner hat will not be as affected. The center hat here is made of aluminum on these two-piece rotors as it usually is on most two-piece rotors. So aluminum helps with heat dissipation but it also helps to keep the rotors lightweight, lighter than your stock rotors. So you're looking at better heat dissipation with a two-piece rotor which will mean better braking performance for a longer period of time but you're also looking at the other benefit of weight reduction with a two-piece rotor, which we talked about earlier. The rotor bands are made from steel and as you can see, these rotors are also slotted and drilled which will help with performance. The slotted portion of the rotors is the grooves that are cut along the face here where the pad makes contact. In those repeated heavy braking, a layer of gas and dust forms from the material transfer that's caused by the friction and the slots give a place for the gas to escape. This means more contact surface area for the brake pad, which we know is a good thing. So by creating more contact surface, the slots work to fight against brake fade. As far as the cross drilling, the thought behind drilling rotors is that offers a way to cool the rotor. Much like slotting a rotor, the drilling gives the gases a place to escape to.With all the advances and improvements in brake systems, drilled rotors offer more of a cool appearance than anything else. They do help some with cooling and they will reduce pad glaze with the help of the slotting but I will say that drilled rotors do tend to be more eye-catching. Either way, Wilwood's got you covered with both slotted and cross drilled rotors. Another feature that really helps the rotors perform that much better is internal. The rotors have a direction staggered vein and this is a venting system that's inside the rotors. So inside of the rotors are directional veins that pull the air through the rotors when they're spinning, The veins curve in the direction of the rotation of the rotor and air is sent through the edges of the rotors. This pulls heat away from the metal and helps to draw brake dust and water away from the rotor surface through the cross drilled holes. The rings of the rotor are also zinc coated which does look nice but it also helps with corrosion resistance. [inaudible 00:04:39] you have 14-inch rotors here and I'm gonna say that you want to review the wheel clearance diagram that Wilwood offers to make sure that your new brakes are gonna fit with your wheels. They do recommend a very specific amount of clearance between the wheel and the caliper in all areas. Another thing to consider is that there are spindle modifications that need to be made in order to install this kit and the mod should be made by someone with experience. The spindle modifications will need to be made for the new caliper bracket to be installed. The brake kit does not include flex lines and the OEM brake lines will not adapt so you'll need to pick up new lines. And that's a big reason why we're calling this install a two out of three wrenches in the difficulty meter. That's gonna wrap up this review and install.
