Review & Install Video

Stephanie with AmericanMuscle.com, and this is my review of BBK's Cold Air Intake for the 2015 and '16 S550 GTs, in either this blacked out version or chrome version. This cold air intake option from BBK does not require a tune, so this is going to be a good option for those S550 owners who are interested in and want the benefits of a cold air intake, but maybe aren't quite ready for a tune yet. We ran our S550 on the Dyno and got our baseline numbers, which were 392 horsepower and 361 foot-pounds of torque, and then ran it with the BBK intake and a 93 octane tune from Bama because we wanted to see the full potential of this intake. With the intake and tune, our numbers were 413 horsepower and 368 foot pounds of torque, giving us peak gains of 21 horsepower and 6 foot pounds of torque. So peak gains are great and all, but the real thing I look for is differences throughout the curve on your driving RPMs, which is what you're actually going to notice performance wise. And throughout the curve, we're seeing gains of 21 horsepower and 30-foot pounds of torque, which is a pretty big torque gain and something that you're really going to feel driving. I did take this out for a drive, and I did notice some big differences, which a lot of them can be from the tune, no doubt, but there is a big improvement in low RPMs, where we saw that torque gain, fifth and sixth gear were more driveable, and the car was way more responsive in higher gears. I noticed that I was able to drive right out of the lower RPMs without any hesitation from the car, and these low and mid range RPM improvements, are something that I also noticed in the lower gears as well, especially between lights and getting up to speed, and even merging on the highway in fifth gear. The car is much smoother overall, it's happier shifting, and the throttle response is noticeably improved. The main benefit of a cold air intake is increasing the air flow to your GT's engine, and providing improvements in power and acceleration over the restrictive stock air box. Now even though you do not need a tune for this particular intake, just keep in mind that you're going to see the full potential in power and acceleration when combined with a custom tune. So taking a look at the intake itself, it includes a cotton-element filter that's going to replace the factory paper filter, which is nice because it's a reusable filter that can be cleaned, re-oiled, and reinstalled. Like I said, BBK offers this intake in two finishes, either this wrinkle black powder-coated version that's a little bit more low-key, or a nice chrome option if you prefer a little flash under the hood. Both options seem pretty solid from looking at them right here on the table. They're smooth on the inside, and come with new couplers and clamps, and it's also worth mentioning, even though I know that technically this is a performance part, I do think the BBK looks nicer than the stock air box does under the hood. The intake comes with this black heat shield no matter which color option you go with. If you're not a fan of the open-element filter and prefer an enclosed air box, there are a handful of other options on the site that you can check out. As for price, this cold air intake option is going to be coming in at that $300 to $400 price range, which is pretty much in line with most of the other cold air intake options on the site. The chrome option will cost a little bit more than the blacked out version. Install of the intake is fairly easy and straightforward, but I will say, just make sure you follow the included directions since the intake is a tight fit, so installing out of order might make it a little hard to get everything into place. This is still a one wrench install, which should take an hour or less to get done, and all you really need is a 10 mill, a flat head for the plastic pins, and some pliers to remove the hose clamps. Overall, the BBK is a solid intake with good construction and a reusable filter, which is nice. This is a good choice for anyone who's not ready for a tune, but like I mentioned and showed on the Dyno, the best results will always come when using a tune. I definitely think that either option would look much better than the factory intake under the hood, and price wise, it's pretty much in line with most of the other cold air intakes on the site, whether open-element or enclosed. But as always, check this out for yourself online along with all of your other options. And for all things Mustang, keep it right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

Improves Horsepower. Amp up your S550 GT with additional horsepower and torque with the simple installation of this Chrome BBK Cold Air Intake. This system will improve the airflow path into your Mustang's engine, resulting in increased power and better acceleration. Completely replacing your GT's restrictive stock air box and paper filter element, this CAI will not only improve underhood appearance with its chrome finish, but you'll feel and see up to 21 horsepower and 30 ft/lb of torque in the low to mid RPM range.

No Tune Required. Unlike other Cold Air Intakes on the market, this BBK Chrome CAI does not require a computer re-tune. The engineers at BBK really did their homework to improve your Pony's power and airflow, while still utilizing the stock tune. This system features a machined custom mass air housing that's been added into the CNC mandrel-bent intake tubing, complete with factory MAF calibration.

Reusable Filter. BBK designed their high flow cotton element air filter to be reusable. Save yourself some money in the long run with the ability to clean the filter, re-oil and reinstall. There's no need to go out and buy a new filter every few thousand miles.

Chrome Finish. The BBK Cold Air Intake not only improves your horsepower and acceleration, but will greatly improve your S550's underhood appearance with its show room chrome finish.

Recommended Upgrade. Even though a re-tune is not required for operation, AmericanMuscle recommends a Bama Custom Tune with a Mustang Handheld Tuner to reprogram the vehicles computer (ECU). This will help to get the best performance possible out of this cold air intake.

Application. This BBK Cold Air Intake System is specifically designed to fit the 2015-2017 GT Mustangs equipped with the 5.0L Coyote V8 engine and does not require re-tuning of the vehicles computer for operation.

Great addition to your S550

Pretty straight forward install and really looks great under the hood. I also installed the BBK 85mm throttle body and with both the car has really come alive.

  • I would suggest purchasing the BBK Air Filter Cleaner & Re-Oil Kit which can be found here: https://www.americanmuscle.com/bbk-air-filter-cleaner-re-oil-kit-79117.html Easy to use, this BBK Air Filter Cleaner and Re-Oil Kit is simple for anyone. You remove the filter from your BBK cold air intake and apply the cleaning solution. Then you need to rinse it off thoroughly. After you allow it to it to air dry you apply the oil to the filter and reinstall in the intake housing.

Actually two questions: 1) Will this pass Smog check for California ? 2) Do you think this would voice warranty on the factory, Ford warranty's, where it be the extended warranty or the Ford Maintenance plan ?

steviemac

  • Unfortunately, the BBK Black Out Cold Air Intake (15-17 GT) is not legal in the state of California. As for a warranty, you would have to contact your Ford Dealership to see what may void it.

    BBK Cold Air Intake

I just recently installed this BBK Cold Air Intake on my 2016 Mustang 5.0.......I did not do a tune, yet. I'll have to say even without a tune I can tell a difference in my car. It sounds better and throttle response is better, maybe a little more power, but no way to really tell that because it never put on a dyno. Now it says it takes 30 minutes to 1 hour for install and that may be true for some, but it took me about 2 hours. It was my first time installing something like this. Looks great and sounds great. Thanks American Muscle!!

Review from BBK Black Out Cold Air Intake (15-17 GT)

Never expected it to be this easy!!

I looked at several different cold air intakes for my 2015 GT, and decided on the BBK Black Out simply because it was rated with a higher net gain in hp (20) than any of the others I saw that didn't require a custom tune. It was ordered on Sunday evening, and received on Wednesday morning. Installed it during lunch in about 45 minutes. It was a good fit, and was MUCH easier to install than I expected. I usually have a professional do my modding, but tried this one on my own and was very pleasantly surprised. Now, I'm back online at American Muscle looking for the best X4 Tuner. I already had the Roush Axle-Back installed, but this BBK Cold Air Intake made it sound even better, with NOTICEABLE increase in power!! Wife has already told me she's going to need a neck brace if she continues to ride with me.

    BBK cold air intake

I just installed my BBK cold air intake. And sounds Awesome. And from 3,200 - 4,000 rpm it has a very improved sound. It has that deep throat sound that a Mustang GT is suppose to have. Louder for sure. I love it. I'll see what difference it makes at track in few weeks. Got my baseline last night before I did any Mods. But I'll say the sound alone is worth it to me. If it adds the 20 HP it will be a bonus. If you want a very a very quick install of one that will sound and run great. BBK is my recommendation. I love it.

    BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK

I picked the BBK cold air intake because it offered the most HP gain and it came in a chrome finish metal tube. I have installed a few different cold air kits but this BBK one was by far the easiest one yet. P.S. it also looks fantastic and sounds wonderful

    sounds like turbo

I bought the JLT diver side oil catch can, but just don't fit. With this air intake, it has more space between the heat shell and the motor, but the designer should've considered some people remove the sound tube, and the JLT hose doesn't plugs in, so I cut the port, now it plugs in.

Review from BBK Black Out Cold Air Intake (15-17 GT)

    Bad Design Overall

During installation, found that the vacuum line on the passenger side that connects to the rubber duct has an interference fit if you have an oil/air separator installed. Makes it impossible to connect that line. Also, the air filter was difficult to install for two reasons, the size of it and the overlapping of the metal partition on the clamp. Other Issues during install, The kit I received was missing the mass air flow sensor screws, missing the interconnect tube for the three vacuum lines on the driver side and the rubber grommet for the mass airflow sensor wiring. After all this, I reinstalled the original air intake box and duct. Going to exchange for a CandL or an Air raid CAI. This is purely bad designing and QA on BBK for this CAI.

    Sounds great

Install was pretty simple, my only complaint is the the coupler for the throttle body is pretty small, leaves a bigger space than the factory tune, no leaks or anything it's just me being picky, id definitely recommend this CAI

Installation was a little harder than expected. Was a real snug fit. Throttle response is great and the growl/grunt that this BBK CAI gives my Pony sounds amazing. Would highly recommend this CAI to anyone. Cant wait to see what happens when I get a tuner for this bad boy and really unleash more HP and Ft/Lb of Torque! Looks spectacular under the hood, too!

    Great intake

The intake is great especially for the price and not having to tune. It fits good but it takes some adjusting to get all the hoses in the right spots so they aren't kinked but other than that it was an easy install. Plus it looks great, sounds great and adds some horsepower too. Defiantly would recommend!!!
