- How to Intall JBA Cat4ward Shorty Headers on Your 2005-2010 Mustang GT
Hi I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and this is our breakdown of BBK’s tuned length shorty header, available in your choice of either ceramic or chrome for the 2005-2010 Mustang GT. So why would you want to use a set of shorty header versus a set of long tubes? Well in a nutshell, a shorty header is a great entry level header. For one, they’re generally less expensive than a set of long tubes, and they’re going to be easier to install thanks to the fact that you don’t have to modify your mid pipe like you would using long tubes. A shorty header might not make as much power as a set of long tubes, but it’s still going to be a solid upgrade over those cast iron factory manifolds. These particular headers feature what BBK refer to as their tuned length runner design, which basically makes them a hybrid between a long tube and a standard shorty header. In the end, BBK claims slightly more power using these headers versus your standard shorty design, while still maintaining a no modification needed, direct bolt on. Taking a closer look at these headers, you’ll see they feature 1 and 5/8” mandrel bent tubing for better flow, and laser cut flanges for an OEM like fit. As I mentioned before you do have the option of picking these shorties up in either a ceramic coating, or a chrome finish. So what are the differences going to be between the two finishes? For one you can see the chrome finish is a little brighter now, but that’s going to change as these headers heat cycle, turning that bright silver chrome color into a more copperish blue color. However, the ceramic coated headers will stay that bright silver color over the years. Secondly, that ceramic coating is going to be much better at reducing underhood temps, which is always better for performance. Those added benefits do come at a price as ceramic coated headers are generally more expensive than chrome headers, or even stainless steel headers. Doing the install on any set of headers can be a little intense, so it’s a great idea to leave yourself a full day, just in case anything goes wrong. Well they took some time to install with some new poly engine mounts I was fortunate enough to have engine out so hard to give an exact time frame, bolted right up, and look sick with the freshly painted black engine well. Not sure on increased horse powerHelpful (1)

My 2008 GT honestly sounded horrible before this purchase, I believe the previous owner purchased some cheap eBay headers. I scattered the Internet Looking for a bang for my buck and kept coming back to these headers and I’m very happy with them. Worth the money
the bbk tuned length headers are worth the money. Brings a hole new sound to the 3v. only problem I had with them is cylinder 7 the bolt is to long to go in the hole, so is the stud. But bought a 1/2" shorter bolt and fit perfectly.Helpful (1)

Interferance with the steering shaft.
Lost money having to modify a set of header for safety reasons. Steering was tight and wouldn't re-center. Motor mounts confirmed good.Helpful (0)

They look great
Just finished installing these things. NOT for the faint at heart. Gotta pull both engine mounts, starter, and steering shaft. Absolute pain in the A**. One bolt provided had to be shaved to fit into the hole because a tube was blocking it. But they look great. Had to shim the driver side engine mount so the tubes wouldnt hit the shaft. Threads in the o2 bung were messed up and I had to tap them.Helpful (2)

Very good sound, not so good fit
Item seems to be of very good quality and bolted right up to the heads very well. The sound is great, very full and aggressive though be aware it will give the car a more lopey and choppy sound. Car definitely feels like it exhales better and seems to have more power. Only big issue with these is they rub against the steering linkage which creates quite a vibration through the steering wheel. Had to shim the left side motor mount to get more clearance, BBK should definitely improve on the fitment.Helpful (3)
Are these 304 stainless steel underneath the chrome coating?
The BBK Chrome Tuned Length Shorty Headers (05-10 GT) will be a mild steel tubing.
Shorty Headers and Cut and Clamp X pipe. Hiya, I have the Pypes cut and clamp X pipe on with Pype-Bomb Axle Back Exhaust. Will the BBK Shorty Headers install without problem? Any expected HP Gains? Thanks!
Ignore the people who say that shorty headers make no gains. They have probably never driven a car with them installed. To be sure, long tubes make MORE power, but those who say shorties make no difference have not seen the dyno charts that show that shorties make as much as 20HP along the curve. It's just that they do not add to peak HP that they think they have no power. I have the BBK Tuned Length headers and they made a huge difference in acceleration and power. My wife who usually thinks my mods do next to nothing, drove the Mustang to the store and came back and slammed the keys down and said, "JEEEEEEZZ!!! This car is RIDICULOUS." If even she noticed a huge difference in power, so will you. I can't vouch for the X pipe, but you will certainly make power with the headers. If you plan on installing them yourself as I did, be prepared to spend the entire weekend doing it. It is VERY time consuming and VERY frustrating. If it's in your budget to have a professional do it, then I would do that instead.
Chrome vs Ceramic coated headers. How much under the hood heat difference can you expect to see between chrome vs ceramic?Will chrome headers be any hotter than the stock manifolds and create problems for other componets (EX: hose,tubes or plastic boxes or parts).
The ceramic coated definitely will lower underhood temps and look good as well.
How much power gain ? How much would this give you in HP. I have an 06 Mustang GT with the Pypes Pype Bomb, and Cut and clamp X pipe. With a K&N CAI,
I installed these along after already having FRPP intake manifold, C&L CAI and Borla cat-back. Once these where on i did notice much more response to throttle input and that is currently on a 91 tune.
These come with the gaskets?
The BBK 1-5/8 in. Chrome Tuned Length Shorty Headers will come with the manifold gaskets yes.
A tune is not required for shorty headers. However, we do recommend one for better performance.
It will honestly depend on your state and their emission laws. We recommend checking with your state ordinances or an auto shop.
These headers do not require a tune.
It would be difficult to describe sound as it can be subjective. We would highly recommend listening to a few sound clips to see if it were a sound that you liked or disliked.
Any H-Pipe designed to work with factory or short tube headers should be a direct bolt on to these BBK Chrome Tuned Length Shorty Headers.
If you are looking to use the BBK shorty headers, the one thing you would need to have it work with your Flowmaster Outlaw would be a BBK mid-pipe. Whether you decide to go with a catted or off-road x-pipe from BBK is up to you, but it will be the component that you need to mate to the headers. Also, if you do not have the Flowmaster Outlaw already, I would recommend purchasing an exhaust which the piping size is 2.75" as that is the size of the BBK mid-pipe.
High flow cats are not required for these headers and since they are shorty headers, a tune will not be needed as shorty headers maintain the stock flow rate.
