Hey, guys. Adam here with americanmuscle.com and today we're taking a closer look at, installing and of course listening to the Borla Stinger S-Type Cat-Back Exhaust with Black Carbon Fiber Tips available for all 2018 and newer Mustang GTs without active exhaust. Now as you just heard from our sound clip right off the bat here, guys, I'm giving this three out of five on our loudness meter. The Borla Stinger is their middle of the road as far as volume goes in the series of cat-backs that Borla offers. They have the Touring, their Stinger and their ATAK as their loudest. So if you're looking for something that's not gonna be super overwhelming but still something that sounds really aggressive with a deep rumble, the Stinger's the way to go as you just heard. At idle, it's got a nice, deep rumble through the low to mid-range of the RPM band. It starts to get a little bit more aggressive without being too loud inside the cabin. Perfect for daily drivers. And then at wide open throttle of course it barks and it is pretty loud to be honest with you but it is gonna bring down some of the drone so inside the cabin it's still not gonna pierce the ears. Makes it a good kit for again daily drivers or the guys looking to just have a simple conversation at any time with their family in the car.Now this guy is made of three inch mandrel bent stainless steel. It's 304 stainless so it's the highest quality in the category among exhausts. 304's gonna be a good option for guys like us located in the East Coast seeing a lot of road salt in the wintery weather months. Corrosion and rust resistance is high with 304 compared to 409 or even aluminized. Now the 304 stainless does carry a slightly higher price tag and Borla's kits are known to be some of the better quality as far as the construction so you can expect this guy to come in right around the $1,900 mark. Now built into that $1,900 price tag is also the black carbon fiber tips. Now this has a true carbon fiber sleeve essentially bolted to the bare exhaust tip. So that is gonna be a slightly more exotic look, it's a lot more unique than some of the other options out there and that's factored into the 1,900. If you're not looking to spend that much or if you're not into the carbon fiber, they have a black chrome option for right around 1,600 bucks and a little bit less than that you can get the regular polished chrome. So there's a couple of different options out there for tips as far as the Stinger is concerned.Install is gonna get two out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter. You can tackle it in the driveway at home with a jack and jack stands or a lift if you have one like we do here in the shop. And it'll take you about two, maybe three hours from start to finish with simple hand tools and because it's a direct bolt-on, no cutting, no welding, no permanent modifications. It's just gonna completely replace the factory system. I'm gonna show you every single step of the process. What do you say we get started?Tools used in this install include an impact gun or a ratchet, an extension, 13 and 15 millimeter deep sockets, recommended would be WD-40 or something similar and a mallet. All right, guys. Once you have your Mustang up in the air and supported properly whether it be on jack stands or on a lift like we have here, you wanna grab an impact gun or a ratchet and a 15 millimeter deep socket and we're gonna loosen up the two band clamps holding on your factory cat-back to the catalytic convertor pipes. Now you'll see that right in front of the factory resonator. There's two nuts here and two nuts there. You don't have to completely remove them. Just get them nice and loose. All right. The next step, we're gonna move back toward the rear of our vehicle right under the rear subframe. Now if you look at your rear sway bar, straight past them are two hangers where your exhaust is hooked on and bolted to that subframe using 2 13 millimeter bolts. From here instead of trying to slide our hangers out of the isolators, I'm actually just gonna completely unbolt the isolators to make life a lot easier. So grab an extension and a 13 millimeter deep socket and what I like to do is go straight over the sway bar and remove those 2 bolts. All right, now what I like to do after the bolts are removed is we have to unclip the isolator from the frame. They're still hooked in there. So what you're basically gonna do is lift up on them so they disconnect and rotate them down and out of the way.All right, our next step here is to get our entire factory cat-back off of the vehicle. We're gonna start up here with our resonator right in front of those. I'm gonna tap out the factory band clamps. I got my buddy Stan helping me get this thing down. If you're working on the ground, you may be able to do it by yourself but if you're in the air, you might want a helping hand. All right, so now we should slide them out of the hangers at the tips and it should come free.So we got our factory exhaust off of our '19 GT and it's on the ground next to our Borla Stinger S-Type. I wanna take you through some similarities and differences between the two kits. Let's start up front. Your factory exhaust has a resonator in place of the mid-pipe and your new Borla kit has a free flowing X-Pipe. Now the X-Pipe here is known to be a little bit louder and raspier than a resonator or even an H-Pipe and it's more free-flowing which can translate to more power. So the X-Pipe is definitely the way to go if that's what you have in mind. Now the kit here is a three inch mandrel bent tubing which is slightly larger than your factory at 2.75 inch. The larger diameter's going to allow for a greater volume of airflow. With less kinks and a free-flowing airflow along with a greater volume that will translate to a better power gain. Now this is all 304 stainless steel which is the highest quality materials in the category for an exhaust, making it more corrosion and rust resistant than your factory kit. Really the only thing that's staying the same here is the path of the pipes to make sure it's reusing all factory locations and of course the position of the hangers. Now right here you'll notice something a little bit different than the factory kit which is just straight tubing. This has two little sleeves before the mufflers. Those are small resonators. The S-Type here has these small resonators in place to make sure that it's baffling some of the higher frequencies to bring the volume down a tad when compared to the Borla ATAK for example which does not have these. It's also gonna make sure it's minimizing drone to make sure inside the cabin even at white open throttle or at highway speeds it's not a piercing, droney sound.Next up we have of course the Borla Stinger S-Type mufflers. Now the Stinger S-Type is going to be that middle of the line muffler in the Borla series. They have the Touring, the Stinger and the ATAK, the ATAK being the loudest, Touring being more mellow. The Stinger is a great daily driver muffler. It makes sure that when you want to be heard, it's going to be loud, especially at that wide open throttle but it is still minimizing drone making sure that highway cruising even with the family in the car is pleasant and it's not overwhelming. So the S-Type in my opinion is a great way to go for someone taking their car to work every day.Exiting out the rear you're also going to notice a very unique tip. These are four inch slash cut carbon fiber black tips. Now the carbon fiber is really a carbon fiber sleeve that is then bolted to the actual exhaust metal. So it's a little bit different than a regular exhaust tip which is typically just welded straight on. These guys are attached using Philips heads and it honestly looks pretty aggressive. It is very unique. It's not gonna be for everyone but if you're looking for that exotic look at the rear, a true carbon fiber weave is gonna be the way to go and I think this is one of the few that offer it.Now Borla does have their name right on top with a little red underline so it gives you a pop of color there for a little contrast and of course you can represent one of the higher, premium quality brands. Now with that said, we do have to transfer over our factory hangers that we removed from our sub frame and we have to transfer over of course the factory band clamps which we'll attach when we throw it on the car.Now the first thing I wanna do is actually take a look at this X-Pipe. You can see there's two adapter pipes put into the inlet section. These adapter pipes are gonna connect to the factory catalytic convertor pipes already on the vehicle. So they're already inserted right out of the box but you do need to clamp these down. So grab two of the clamps included in the kit. I'm just gonna slide them on into place with the bolt heads or the clamp heads on the outside. Make sure these guys are inserted all the way down. Grab your 15 millimeter deep socket and tighten them down. All right. Next up, toward our mufflers, if you remember, we disconnected the entire isolator from the subframe where the hangers connect. So we're just gonna pop these guys off and transfer them over to our Borla system. Now it may help to lubricate these guys with WD-40. Now when you install these on the new kit, you wanna make sure you're taking note of this tab at the top. You wanna make sure that it's facing where the subframe is, so facing the same direction as these hangers. Gonna slide this guy in and I'm just gonna rotate them down and out of the way. Again taking note here, making sure they're facing the same direction. Slide it on.All right, now before we install our X-Pipe onto the factory cat pipes, grab the factory band clamps and we're gonna slide these guys in place. Now you'll notice there's a little button welded on to each end of the pipe and you'll notice on the clamp there's a little slot here. You wanna make sure you're lining those guys up so it tells you exactly where it needs to be when it's installed. Now in order to do that you may need to bend up this little metal tab. You can do that with like a flathead screwdriver and then once it's on, just push it back into place. When you grab your X-Pipe, you wanna make sure you're installing those adapters into the clamps we just put into place. Now what I also like to do, and this is just personal preference, but when you put it on, make sure you're putting it on with the bolt heads or the clamp heads facing down. That way they're easily accessible on car. Grab your 15 millimeter deep socket and tighten them down.Next up we're gonna start on our passenger side pipe. Make sure you have a clamp over the end here and insert it into the passenger side X-Pipe. I'm gonna seat this guy all the way back just twisting it into place. Now let's go to the subframe and hang this guy up. Here we have our isolator. I'm gonna rotate this guy up but you can see we're not really in the right position. So we have to pull back the piping a little bit, lift it up and hang it in place. All right, now we can do the same thing with the driver side. All right, so again you can see this is too far in so we're gonna pull this pipe back until the hanger can clear and hang up. Next up we're gonna take the two factory 13 millimeter bolts and put them back into place on the subframe. Grab your 13 millimeter socket and again I like to use the extension to go over the rear sway bar and we're gonna tighten them down. Now we can move back toward our X-Pipe again and get these clamps nice and snug. Now I don't like to tighten them down too much. You wanna leave a little room for adjustment just nice and snug.Next is our passenger muffler. Now make sure you have a clamp on the end. First you wanna focus on putting the hanger into the isolator by the tips. Now it may help to lubricate it with WD-40 just so it slides in a little easier on you. So once that's in place, you're gonna line up the pipes and connect them. All right, so I think we have a little bit of ways to go before it's completely seated so I'm just gonna grab a mallet here and tap it in. Grab your 15 socket and get that clamp nice and snug. All right, repeat that same process on the driver side. Again make sure you have a clamp in place first. Now I know the tips are looking a little wonky as they are now but what you wanna do is grab your impact gun or your ratchet, lift the tips up into place, make sure they're aligned where you want them, tighten down all your clamps and you're good to go. And so I'm just gonna lift up on this muffler here, make sure it's aligned and I'm gonna tighten this clamp down. That's gonna wrap up my review and install as well as sound clip for the Borla Stinger S-Type Cat-Back Exhaust with the Black Carbon Fiber Tips available for all '18 and newer Mustang GTs without active exhaust.
