    Review & Installation Video

Hi I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and this is our breakdown of the Hurst Billet competition plus shifter fitting all 2005-2010 Mustang GTs. In a moment, we’re going to take a closer look at this Hurst, but before we do, we’re going to take our 07 GT out and get a feel for the stock shifter now before we install our new shifter, just so I can do a proper comparison. Before we really get into detail about the Hurst shifter, and actually get it installed, we’re out here in our 07 GT now just to get a feel for the stock shifter. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve driven this car a lot over time or maybe it’s just because I’ve gotten used to this shifter, but now that I’m really paying attention to it, it’s pretty awful, I mean very sloppy, even when you’re in gear, there’s a lot of movement in the shifter, and when changing gears you really don’t know sometimes what gear you’re going into. My opinion, Ford really got it right with the 11,12,13 Mustangs, especially the 6 speeds, I mean they just feel awesome to drive, they’re very tight. Now this, our 07 is a far cry from that, I don’t know if that’s a function of it just being a few years older, maybe things just tend to loosen up over time, whatever the reason, it definitely could use a little help. So with that said, let’s get our car back to the shop, talk a little bit more about the Hurst shifter, and get it installed. So as we take a closer look at this shifter, there’s no question it’s a Hurst, we have that iconic name engraved on the shift handle just like it’s been for decades, and we also see that white ball style shift knob also bearing the Hurst logo, as well as that 5 speed shift pattern. The difference between this shifter and the standard competition plus is in the name – billet. The entire base of this Hurst shifter is constructed from 100% T-6 Billet aluminum, and features this I-beam design which pretty much makes this shifter bulletproof. In addition to the quality construction, the Hurst Billet comp plus will also reduce your throws by up to 30%, leading to quicker, more precise shifts. This shifter also features a unique shifter rod design, along with these polyurethane bushings and spherical bearings which overall is going to take all the sloppiness out of this shifter. Getting the Hurst installed will require you to do some work both inside the car and underneath, therefore just leave yourself about 2 hours to get everything bolted up. If you don’t have the luxury of using a lift, just make sure you have your jack stands or ramps ready before you get started. Now that we have our Billet competition plus bolted up, let’s take our GT out for another spin and see how it feels rolling through the gears. So we’re back out on the street in our 07 GT with the Hurst Billet competition plus shifter installed, and my initial reaction is a good one, the shifter feels great, the throws are nice and short, and nice and crisp as well, which I love, I mean some people might call it notchy, I really dig it. Second, it sits a little higher up than the stock shifter used to which I really like, you can leave your arm on the arm rest and literally just shift gears by flicking your wrist. Finally the looks, I mean it looks great it’s a great addition to any interior, it’s got a really cool retro vibe going on, the chrome lever with that iconic white ball, it’s an awesome shifter all around. So that pretty much wraps it up for the Billet competition plus shifter from Hurst for the 05-2010 Mustang which you can find right here at AmericanMuscle.com

Can I fit any shift knob on this shifter?

        • The Hurst Billet Competition Plus Short Throw Shifter will not accept all shift knobs due to its unique thread pattern. Unfortunately, hurst does not list the thread pitch as it is entirely specific for them, no other shift knob made (unless custom) would work with this shifter unless it is hurst.

Perfect but don't use the supplied bushings

In love with the feel and look of this shifter but be weary of the polyurethane bushings. Not going to nick a star because I live on the Gulf Coast in extreme heat but the rear bushing was breaking apart after two or so months and about three months later a heavy handed friend finished it with a hard shift into 3rd leaving me with only 1st 3rd and 5th unless I used a wedge to keep the assembly forward to shift backwards. SIMPLE FIX: Just use the OEM bushings instead of the new ones. Perfect fit and it doesn't feel sloppy being rubber vs. a harder bushing like Hurst's.

            Shifts so well

Installation was a little bit of a pain. Had to drop the transmission just slightly so i could fit the shifter into place. But other than that the work was all worth it. I love it compared to the stock shifter!

not a fan, very notchy and vague. A bit to short of a throw in my opinion. I would spend the couple extra bucks and get something adjustable like the MGW. I

            garbage

It needs stock components from the stock shifter to install witch would have been nice to know because I don't have the stock shifter anymore. Also bought the Blowfish V2 Shifter Support Bracket and it does not work with this shifter as well. So I've spent around seven hundred dollars just to buy another shifter!

            Love it

I have an 08 bullitt. I didn't like how that shifter shifted but I liked the look of the stock shifter so I was apprehensive to purchase this shifter. I'm glad I did tho! I actually Love the white ball with the exposed shifter. It goes along with the classic/modern look of my car. The shifting is really notchy. And you have to use a little muscle to put it into gear. However, the more I drive it the more I like it. It makes my car more fun to drive. And the quality of this shifter over the stock shifter is over the top in my opinion. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 bc I was hoping for a little smoother, but it does have more of a muscle car/race car feel which I ultimately did want for my weekend warrior.

            Well

It was nice at first but then after a couple thousands miles, it started to rattles. If I would have known I wouldn’t of bought it, definitely thinking of buying another kind of shifter. I thought it would have been good, especially because it’s a completion but no. I was wrong. I was so hard on the gears either. So much for that

            Hurst billet short throw shifter

Love the feel and look of the product. Gives the car more of that muscle car vibe. Rattles and vibrates some but not bad. Came loose with first install as the washers to hold nuts in place didn't do the job. Went in again and used lock tight and have no more issues.

            Hurst Quality

I took this out of the box and was blown away by the higher quality compared to the cheaper hurst shifter option I had on my previous mustang (Rest in Pieces). Installation was very simple and can be completed without instructions provided one has common sense. Moving on to performance while driving, I have one question: Can shifters add horsepower? Good God, it feels like a whole new car and driving it makes it feel like how a muscle cars shifter should feel. With that being said, you will have to get use to the new shift points, but that will be relatively quick because you'll want to drive this thing on curvy roads for hours on end just to find a reason to keep shifting. The only reason i gave the "bang for your buck" 4/5 is because it doesn't eliminate 100 of the play while in gear, but it was the same way on my first hurst so it's no big deal. BUY THE MORE EXPENSIVE HURST.

            Amazing Shifter

In my opinion, this is one of the best mods you can get for your 05-09 gt manual. The shifts are much shorter and way more solid. This shifter removes a lot of the slop caused by the stock shifter. I am not afraid to shift this shifter hard to make quick shifts because that is exactly what it is built for. The overall enjoyment of driving my gt has improved immensely (and it's pretty darned fun as it is). The shifter looks great, feels great, and performs as it should. I definitely recommend this shifter. The install was very easy, I recommend watching the LMR install video on youtube.

            2010 GT

Bought this shifter to help with the vague 2 to 3 shift of the stock shifter. Install was about 2 hours including putting all tools etc away. The shifter has nice feel. A very clear feel when shifting. Each gear has a clear two step shift passing through the gears. There is no mistake you have found the next gear. Install was very simple . The most difficult is the front shifter to transmission bolt. It is long and there is limited room. Not a big deal but maybe 15 min messing wth it to get it out. The old shifter comes up and out through the interior easily and the Hurst drops though from inside just as easily. Two things I'm a little less than happy with. 1) the shifter is longer than stock so it is maybe a half inch taller than I would like. 2) because the boot is pushed down to the bottom of the Hurst stick so the chrome chows and the retro HURST can be seen the boot is a bit bunched up. It doesn't cause any problem just doesn't look quite right. No noise no vibration. More feel than stock. I did not use the isolation rubber pieces between the shifter and handle extent in. Over all I am happy I would recommend this product.
