Hi I’m Justin with, and this is our breakdown of the Hurst Billet competition plus shifter fitting all 2005-2010 Mustang GTs. In a moment, we’re going to take a closer look at this Hurst, but before we do, we’re going to take our 07 GT out and get a feel for the stock shifter now before we install our new shifter, just so I can do a proper comparison. Before we really get into detail about the Hurst shifter, and actually get it installed, we’re out here in our 07 GT now just to get a feel for the stock shifter. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve driven this car a lot over time or maybe it’s just because I’ve gotten used to this shifter, but now that I’m really paying attention to it, it’s pretty awful, I mean very sloppy, even when you’re in gear, there’s a lot of movement in the shifter, and when changing gears you really don’t know sometimes what gear you’re going into. My opinion, Ford really got it right with the 11,12,13 Mustangs, especially the 6 speeds, I mean they just feel awesome to drive, they’re very tight. Now this, our 07 is a far cry from that, I don’t know if that’s a function of it just being a few years older, maybe things just tend to loosen up over time, whatever the reason, it definitely could use a little help. So with that said, let’s get our car back to the shop, talk a little bit more about the Hurst shifter, and get it installed. So as we take a closer look at this shifter, there’s no question it’s a Hurst, we have that iconic name engraved on the shift handle just like it’s been for decades, and we also see that white ball style shift knob also bearing the Hurst logo, as well as that 5 speed shift pattern. The difference between this shifter and the standard competition plus is in the name – billet. The entire base of this Hurst shifter is constructed from 100% T-6 Billet aluminum, and features this I-beam design which pretty much makes this shifter bulletproof. In addition to the quality construction, the Hurst Billet comp plus will also reduce your throws by up to 30%, leading to quicker, more precise shifts. This shifter also features a unique shifter rod design, along with these polyurethane bushings and spherical bearings which overall is going to take all the sloppiness out of this shifter. Getting the Hurst installed will require you to do some work both inside the car and underneath, therefore just leave yourself about 2 hours to get everything bolted up. If you don’t have the luxury of using a lift, just make sure you have your jack stands or ramps ready before you get started. Now that we have our Billet competition plus bolted up, let’s take our GT out for another spin and see how it feels rolling through the gears. So we’re back out on the street in our 07 GT with the Hurst Billet competition plus shifter installed, and my initial reaction is a good one, the shifter feels great, the throws are nice and short, and nice and crisp as well, which I love, I mean some people might call it notchy, I really dig it. Second, it sits a little higher up than the stock shifter used to which I really like, you can leave your arm on the arm rest and literally just shift gears by flicking your wrist. Finally the looks, I mean it looks great it’s a great addition to any interior, it’s got a really cool retro vibe going on, the chrome lever with that iconic white ball, it’s an awesome shifter all around. Improves Shifts. The Hurst 5-Speed Short Shifter gets rid of that sloppy feeling that many factory shifters have. The Hurst Shifter includes a bright chrome shifter handle and a white shift knob with 5 speed pattern logo.

Quality Construction. Designed by the biggest name in the automotive industry "Hurst", this shifter is CNC machined from 6061-T6 billet aluminum and uses an I-beam design for superior strength. The Mustang GT Hurst shifter also features a spherical bearing with a unique shifter rod that allows for shorter, faster shifts with a 30% throw reduction.

Does it fit 07 v6


  • The Hurst Billet Competition Plus Shifter will not fit an 07 V6. It will only fit an 05-10 GT with a TR3650 Transmission.

What's the thread size on the handle?


  • Unfortunately, hurst does not list the thread pitch as it is entirely specific for them, no other shift knob made (unless custom) would work with this shifter unless it is hurst.

How do you stop the shifter from rattling?


  • When upgrading to an aftermarket shifter, you can expect a minimal amount of rattling/Vibration but may be a little more than the stock shifter. If it is something that is audible or easily felt by the hand, there could be an installation error or defective component.

Whats the difference between the regular and billet shifter as far as feel? Is one stiffer than the other?


  • The Hurst Billet Competition Shifter features a 30% throw reduction with a CNC 6061 T-6 Billet Aluminum Construction. The I-beam design has superior strength over other shifters. The Hurst Competition Plus Shifter - TR-3650 (05-10 GT), item # 24303, ( features a 40% throw reduction with a durable steel construction. Both of these shifter's include a chrome shifter handle and a white knob. The main different between the two are the throw reduction and material they are made from. The Hurst Competition will feel stiffer from the Billet Competition because it has a large throw reduction.

Hi, I would like to know if the bushings are in polyurethane? Do I have to add grease on the billet at the installation? Thanks


  • The bushings that come with the Shifter are urethane bushings. It is not necessary to add any grease, but if you feel you need to, make sure it is a moderate amount.

    Hurst Billet Competition Plus Shifter - TR-3650 (05-10 GT)

    I bought the shifter on sale for a little under $200.00 from AM. Free shipping and received it a few days after. It arrived with all the parts needed for the installation. Just follow the directions and you should have no problems. However, here is a couple of tips to help with the installation. The stock shifter can be removed through the interior of your mustang, it just takes finding the right angle. You can also install the Hurst shifter through the interior. For easier installation of the Hurst, remove the black square shaped metal piece that sits on top of the shifter. It is held in by 4 allen head screws. It is a solid piece, no springs are gonna jump out at you. Slide the rest of the shifter through, and secure the shifter. While you still have the black piece off, install the shift stops onto the black piece then reattach the black piece to the shifter. Tip 2: make sure the grooves on the top of the shifter handle are facing the passenger side before you do anything. Tip 3: Use a vise to press in the metal sleeve that you reuse from the stock shifter. It is a tight fit into the new Hurst poly bushing. Take your time and do it right. The shifter works great, looks good, firm shorter shifts, no noise/ vibration. In all a great shifter, and easy install. You want be disappointed. Service from AM was also top notch.

    brand new shifter rattles?

    Did the shifter shorten the throws and make the car feel more like a race car? YES. Does the shifter rattle loudly while driving? YES. A brand new shifter should not have this kind of rattling mechanical defect! Everyone has complained about the rattling yet I still bought it. Now I am stuck with trying to deal with the noise or to spend another $80 for a fix when it shouldn't be broken in the first place!

    Excellent upgrade

    Read the directions simple install, great feel while shifting. I purchased 1 1/4 longer bolts with lock nuts and used red permatex locker. Have no noise or vibrations. About an hour install.

    Hurst Billet Short Throw Shifter

    Simply put I love this shifter and it was worth every penny. I got it professionally installed for my Supercharged Mustang GT by a local place that specializes in Mustang mods. They got it in within an hour or two and there is NO wobble, vibrations, shaking, noise, its sturdy and works beautifully. Get the Billet it's the newer version with no issues, and it's only a bit more costly (but well worth it) than the normal Comp. It is also more sturdy and quality is better. This shifter has the old Hurst, and true cue ball Muscle car feel as you can feel the clutch engage gear and it has a satisfying slam into each gear. The shift is a noticeable 40-50% throw reduction and is a monster. If i had to do again I would definitely buy it again. Wish i did it earlier!

    hurst shifter

    shifter looks and works great but rattles non stop. you have to turn the radio on to stop from hearing it. started off only at high rpm's now it's non stop rattling.

    Great Looks

    This is a great looking shifter in any car, but in my 08 GT/CS it brings back the look and feel of the sixties. No problem with the installation, some vibration in third gear but overall it was a great choice that I love to look at and to use.

    Nice easy mod

    A definate buy for anyone serious about your mustang. Install took about an hour and a half. I love the feel of this shifter, not real sure it is worth the extra money. If you want to quite the shifter down use the rubber isolators from your stock shifter (you will have to cut the back one to fit with this shifter). This shifter brings a nice old school look and feel with it. It is notchy as you engage each gear, but I like that. Also this shifter does not have a centering spring to put you in the 3rd/4th gate, but I have never had a problem missing a gear with it. In short, I love it.

    this shifter is pretty sweet. takes a little bit to get used to it but its 100 times better than stock. best part about it you can be lazy and leave your arm on the arm rest and still shift. to anyone that's going to replace their stock shifter with an aftermarket one DO NOT over tighten the nut on the shift rod its cheap and not made very good and will snap. no I did not do this but I know someone who did and cost him $400 for a new shift rod only place to get a new one is at ford.

    Looks great. Shifting sucks.

    Love the look and price of this shifter. Shifts are much shorter. However, the shifts are really notchy now and shifting from 1-2 at high rpms takes way too much effort. I will probably be changing to a Barton shifter soon.

    hurst billet shifter

    Have to say install was not as hard as i thought it would be i installed on 2010 gt. Installed in about 2 hours all in my garage with floor jack and stands just follow the directions. Only issue i had was installing the metal sleeve from the oem shifter to the hurst openings red bushings are slightly smaller than the sleeve i used some grease and mallet got in.

    Hurst shifters

    I've ran both big name shifters from Hurst and B&M, and by far for the Mustang the Hurst is the way to go. It has a nice tight feel and very short throws, while yes it can be a little on the noisy side until it breaks in on the pattern, but using the isolators and lubrication the Poly bushings will pull almost half that noise out. As I installed mine I also changed the trannie fluid over to Royal Purple Syncromax, which once it has worked into all the nooks and crannies of the gears and syncronizers should defineatly improve the feel and sound of the Tremec 3650 5 speed trans.

    Hurst Billet Competition Plus Shifter

    First a disclosure: Being 71 (and lacking jack stands), I had my Hurst installed by my mechanic. He tells me it took a tad less than an hour. The throw reduction was so dramatic that I had to change my clutch-shift timing. It looks great (see my photo)! In spite of what the American Muscle video says, it isn't much taller than the stock unit and is quite comfortable. It IS "notchy" but I like the positive feel and I love it. Toss in the fast, free shipping and buying your Hurst from American Muscle will be the best 'shift' you ever made.

    I had serious reservations about this. To the point that, even after buying the billet shifter I waited a month to put it in. I should never have hesitated. Follow the directions, take your time and it will go fine. I just backed my car up on some ramps and did the install myself in a couple of hours. I absolutely LOVE this shifter! It's tight, sure shifts have made the car far more fun to drive. Love the old school look and heritage. No noise, no rattle, just tons of cool. Get the billet and don't look back.

    I was excited about this shifter. With the car on jack stands I could not get the old shifter out once unbolted. Top or bottom. Finally cut the longer shaft end on the stock shifter to get the thing out. The front 10mm bolt that attaches the shifter to the transmission was very hard to get out as clearance on the tunnel is minimal with the insulation in the way. Once finally out, going back in with the new one was a challenge. Could not get it in with out taking it apart as in removing the allen screws on the front shaft. Once that was done re-attaching the shaft to the trans mount was impossible due to the bolt clearance. Ended up stripping the threads on the trans itself where the bolt goes in. Stopped prior to forcing it but stripped at the opening. So now I have to flat bed towed to the Ford dealer with hopes they can repair the treads on the trans then complete the installation. Now I wish I would have kept my stock shifter. I do mods myself and never ran into a problem like this.

    Hurst Shifter

    Just installed in my 05 gt. It took me a liter over an hour. Very straight forward. I watched a YouTube video and was good to go after that. Shifter is very tight. Way better than stock a lot like the pro. 5.0 .

    Will not be disappointed

    This was a great addition to my street/track car. Very crisp and precise on track and easy to live with for every day driving. The only thing I must warn a potential buyer about is installing the front bushing to trans bolt. I got it in there but the heat sheilding on the bottom of the trans well was a bit too close and tight, after much coersion and swearing I finally got it to work. Also the metal bushing you have to reuse from the stock shifter is a bit of a pain to get into the new shifter. I would recommend a press of some sort, or in my case a rubber mallet and a great deal or persistence. Excellent excellent product once in the car.
