    Review & Install Video

Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and I’m going to be reviewing Pypes high flow cat system for all 1986-2010 Mustangs. These cats are going to be a great compromise for those of you who are required by law to run some sort of catalytic converter system yet still allow you to ditch those ultra restrictive factory cats for something that’s going to flow a lot better, making for more power and sound versus your stock cats. These are going to also be great for someone who might currently be running an offroad X or H pipe, and just wants to tone down that rasp a little bit. This system from Pypes features durable 409 polished stainless steel construction and a very small footprint. This is going to be great for those of you going with a custom exhaust setup, or those of you who might be lowered an inch or two, and won’t have to worry about scraping these over speed bumps. A very important thing to point out with this particular system is that it features a ceramic substrate material on the inside. This system should only be used if you’re naturally aspirated, if you’re forced induction, then you’ll definitely want to check out Pypes’ other system, which features a metallic substrate on the inside, which is far more suitable to handle those higher exhaust gas temperatures. Getting the cats installed should only take you about 2 hours using these two supplied clamps. However, depending on your exhaust setup, you might need to go to your local parts store, and just pick up a couple more clamps. So if you’d like to go to an off road X or H pipe but your local laws just won’t allow for it, or you just want to get rid of some of that excessive rasp with your aftermarket exhaust, without hurting your power, you’ll definitely want to check out a set of these affordable high flow cats from Pypes Performance.

High Flow. Are you looking to free up your restrictive stock exhaust, but are required by law to run Catalytic Converters? Then AmericanMuscle has the answer you need in the form of Pypes High Flow Ceramic Catalytic Converter Kit.

Easy swap at the track. Every car enthusiast knows that catalytic converters suck the lifeblood - horsepower - out of your engine. If you're running a Pypes modular x-pipe style configuration for track / racing purposes, these cats give you an easy way to be street legal when you leave the track.

Durable construction. These Pypes Mini Catalytic Converters are built from polished 409 stainless and feature a durable Ceramic substrate material making them perfect for naturally aspirated applications. They weigh in at 2.5 lbs each and only measure 11 inches in length.

Small Footprint. Installed, the Pypes catalytic converters have a very Small under-carriage footprint that only takes up a virtually invisible 7” in length making them perfect for custom applications.

Will pass most emissions tests. Pypes High Flow Ceramic Catalytic Converters will pass emissions testing procedures in most states. However, check your local and state ordinances for installation and usage regulations.

Application: The Pypes High Flow Ceramic Catalytic Converter Kit is designed for use with naturally aspirated Mustangs from 1986 to 2010. If you have a Mustang equipped with power adder check out the Pypes High Flow Metallic Catalytic Converter Kit.

Hi can these cats pass smog in california?

        • These cats will not pass smog regulations in California.

I purchased these along with the off-road Pypes HPipes. After a few months of driving I got both a P0420 and P0430 code talking about the threshold isn't enough. Has anyone had issues with this? Also, what was the fix? My county does require emissions.

        • I would say to have the car diagnosed because there are a few systems that can cause this code for example o2 sensors failing, failing catalytic converters, running rich. After knowing what is wrong then we can help find a solution.

Is welding these cats the only way to install them?

        • No, you can use the band clamps that are included with them for installation as well.

Will these fit my stock 2005 V6 Mustang? I have the stock y pipe and the stock headers.

        • The Pypes High Flow Ceramic Catalytic Converter Kit will not be a direct replacement for your stock cats, due to the angle they are mounted at. You will need some custom piping to complete installation.

            Worst Experience Ever

I was super excited about getting these. My old cats were not sounding good (got a little bit of rattling when I revved up). So I finally decided to replace them. American muscle made it sound so simple as if it were a simple bolts on that should only take around 2 hours. This is defiantly not the case. The sizes of the ends of the cats are both different and does not even fit to the original exhaust properly (way too big). So if you are trying to use clamps like I did, you have to buy adapters and let me tell you that was a huge pain to get a good fit. Nothing seemed to work. I spent a whole day cutting and clamping (trial and error) until I finally got it to work. or at least I thought... because when I turned the car on, I could hear exhaust leaks. This was the worst experience I have ever had to deal with when it comes to car stuff. You are much better taking it to a muffler shop and getting someone to weld everything. The fact that they even give you 2 clamps and nothing else is a freakin joke. And this is a non-refundable item which means if you can't fit it right, you're out 200 bucks. Just spend the extra money and have muffler shop weld it in.

5 stars for the first month. Sounds great though

A few problems with these cats. If you live in VA, or nova (worse), a lot of mechanics will tell you it's illegal to install new cats if you already have working cats. Can you still find a mechanic? Sure. Will they pass emissions in northern VA? Yes, if working. These cats didn't fit directly into my exhaust system (H-pipe, LT headers, catback) and had to pay extra for welding cost to extend. After installation they worked and sounded great. Heads definitely turned, received lots of compliments. Less than 3 months of driving with them installed, there was a leak in the left cat and it eventually blew. How that happened I have no idea. Result, failed emissions (right cat passed, left failed) and looking at $600 to fix it for an emissions pass.

            Amazing Product

These cats definitely let more air flow through the exhaust. They're much louder than the stock cats, but they don't drone when paired with the Pypes Pype-Bomb axle-backs. The exhaust note does sound raspy when driving under 2500 rpms. You can't go wrong with this product.

Does not fit my 2008 GT500

No they do not fit, not even close! The coverts are for a "straight pipe" section of your exhaust pipe. They are missing a flange and 45 deg. bend to work.

Look good and easy to instal they restrict a lot of airflow looking threw u can only see a pinhole of light from the other side but easy to punch out if u want more power.

these so far being on my car for about 3 weeks there working really well car is louder and seems like the flow is better. the one bad thing about these is I'm not sure if they will pass the WI emissions test. I'm assuming since I can smell gas standing behind my car that it won't pass.

            2003 Mach 1 Automatic

I gave this a 4 because I felt they should have included the other 2 clamps and also felt there should have been more information. There are 4 Cats on our Mach 1, I only ordered 2. This is not your typical driveway installation. I took it to a shop which took 3 hours on a lift. There was welding involved so none of the clamps were needed. Once on, I felt the difference right away. We have 102K on the car so the stock cats could have been at the early stages of clogging. I had installed the Borla Touring System last weekend so did not notice any difference in the tone from then to now. I do feel the engine is breathing better now.

            Worth it

Much better sound and perfect amount of back pressure, wish the size were a bit smaller as it is hard to find a good spot for them as well as with lowering springs ground clearance is tight, they get rubbed a couple times a year

I have ford hot rod performance cams a long with long tube headers and an x pipe and i knew my car was going to be way to loud so i purchased these cats and they sound amazing at idle you can hear the cams without drawing too much attention but still get noticed at a stop light or something and when i floor it the car screams since i have slp axle backs, overall i am satisfied with the results.

            Turns Heads

I absolutely love these cats even though I have had them on for only two days now. They added some rasp to the exhaust tone at 2-3k rpms. I'm pretty sure the neighbors don't like me now but that's fine. These cats really make your mustang louder since the factory cats are quite restrictive. These catalytic converters seem high flow as I could see through them barley. I would recommend getting a trusted exhaust shop to install these as other shops may not replace them exactly where the original cats came off. However, I don't notice a performance gain but I do notice and love the exhaust sound. I would recommend these to anyone who has a 3v mustang or any other mustang.
