Review & Install Video

Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and I’m going to be reviewing Pypes high flow cat system for all 1986-2010 Mustangs. These cats are going to be a great compromise for those of you who are required by law to run some sort of catalytic converter system yet still allow you to ditch those ultra restrictive factory cats for something that’s going to flow a lot better, making for more power and sound versus your stock cats. These are going to also be great for someone who might currently be running an offroad X or H pipe, and just wants to tone down that rasp a little bit. This system from Pypes features durable 409 polished stainless steel construction and a very small footprint. This is going to be great for those of you going with a custom exhaust setup, or those of you who might be lowered an inch or two, and won’t have to worry about scraping these over speed bumps. A very important thing to point out with this particular system is that it features a ceramic substrate material on the inside. This system should only be used if you’re naturally aspirated, if you’re forced induction, then you’ll definitely want to check out Pypes’ other system, which features a metallic substrate on the inside, which is far more suitable to handle those higher exhaust gas temperatures. Getting the cats installed should only take you about 2 hours using these two supplied clamps. However, depending on your exhaust setup, you might need to go to your local parts store, and just pick up a couple more clamps. So if you’d like to go to an off road X or H pipe but your local laws just won’t allow for it, or you just want to get rid of some of that excessive rasp with your aftermarket exhaust, without hurting your power, you’ll definitely want to check out a set of these affordable high flow cats from Pypes Performance.

High Flow. Are you looking to free up your restrictive stock exhaust, but are required by law to run Catalytic Converters? Then AmericanMuscle has the answer you need in the form of Pypes High Flow Ceramic Catalytic Converter Kit.

Easy swap at the track. Every car enthusiast knows that catalytic converters suck the lifeblood - horsepower - out of your engine. If you're running a Pypes modular x-pipe style configuration for track / racing purposes, these cats give you an easy way to be street legal when you leave the track.

Durable construction. These Pypes Mini Catalytic Converters are built from polished 409 stainless and feature a durable Ceramic substrate material making them perfect for naturally aspirated applications. They weigh in at 2.5 lbs each and only measure 11 inches in length.

Small Footprint. Installed, the Pypes catalytic converters have a very Small under-carriage footprint that only takes up a virtually invisible 7” in length making them perfect for custom applications.

Will pass most emissions tests. Pypes High Flow Ceramic Catalytic Converters will pass emissions testing procedures in most states. However, check your local and state ordinances for installation and usage regulations.

Application: The Pypes High Flow Ceramic Catalytic Converter Kit is designed for use with naturally aspirated Mustangs from 1986 to 2010. If you have a Mustang equipped with power adder check out the Pypes High Flow Metallic Catalytic Converter Kit.

I purchased these along with the off-road Pypes HPipes. After a few months of driving I got both a P0420 and P0430 code talking about the threshold isn't enough. Has anyone had issues with this? Also, what was the fix? My county does require emissions.

Anonymous

  • I would say to have the car diagnosed because there are a few systems that can cause this code for example o2 sensors failing, failing catalytic converters, running rich. After knowing what is wrong then we can help find a solution.

Why wont these work with a 2011 mustang?

doesntmatter

  • The Pypes High Flow Ceramic Catalytic Converter Kit need a 3in diameter outlet piping to properly fit the 2011 Mustang. We do offer the proper one for you listed below. https://www.americanmuscle.com/pypes-metallic-catalytic-converter-1114.html

My car is 2004 Mustang GT 4.6. I already have SLP tail pipe and SLP muffler (well the SLP part in place of the stock muffler) not sure what they would be called. Anyways if I remove the stock catalytic converters will I if any notice a difference in sound and horsepower?

AmandaN

  • With the Pypes High Flow Ceramic Catalytic Converters, you will hear a little bit of difference in sound. Your car would be a little deeper then what it was. As far as horsepower there will not be a difference in power of the car.

Will the make my exhaust louder if I put them on the stock h pipe I have a 2007 mustang gt with flowmaster outlaw

KylanN

  • The Pypes High Flow Ceramic Catalytic Converter Kit is more free flowing than the OEM converters, so a slight increase in exhaust volume will occur, but it will be less noticeable than the muffler swap.

has anyone tried using these on a straight piped mustang? My 06 mustang is straight piped right now, but I'm getting bored of the sound. I'm wondering if it would sound good with these on, and if it would be too loud

CodyB

  • The Pypes High Flow Ceramic Catalytic Converter Kit is a set of free flowing high performance cats, and will increase the exhaust volume over stock cats. With a car running no mufflers, this would also increase the exhaust volume a good bit, as well as give a slightly more aggressive exhaust tone.

I previously purchases JBA shorty headers, Pypes x pipe and Magnaflow Magnapacks for my 2007 4.0 mustang. I thought that with that setup my car had an awesome deep loud tone to it and sounded great when accelerating. I just had these cats put on and the difference with just simple cats is ridiculous! I thought with the setup I had before I had a sick sounding car, but once I put these on and accelerated and hell when I even turned the car on I was in complete shock I highly recommend these, its a cheap and easy way to get the best air flow out of every mustang

    Pypes Cats

Looked for some "high-flow" cats when my stock ones died. Put these on my V6. I wasn't expecting a difference in the sound department, but these made my pre-installed Ford Racing Dual exhaust sound much deeper. I've also noticed a bit of power gain. Can't wait to Dyno to see how much. I recommend this product and I approve this message.

    Amazing Product

Have to say these are the best aftermarket Cats on the market, better than the magnaflows i had on my previous car, my installer had to cut the cat pipe down and fab up new piping but def worth it, on my 04 i was even able to use the O2 bung on the cat, A MUST if you wanna stay legal and have extra power and great deep sound with flowmasters!

Had a nice dual exhaust setup on mine. i had stock cats, and just today my cats came in. Oh My Goodness, the big difference in sound, power, and surprize was amazing. ive actually had peope look at my car and ask me if it was a GT. Very good product, very nice employees on the phone. o.k.

bought these because i had an o/r x-pipe with slp LM2's, and they were really loud. but also too raspy and the smell was pretty bad when i was parked. put these on and really dulled the sound of my exhaust to more of a low rumble instead of a growl. and still have the check engine light on too.

    Great Bang for your buck

These cats provided a nice amount of horsepower for the money paid and also improved miles per gallon. i added them to a bassani x-pipe with flowmaster mufflers in which one of the previous cats had hollowed itself out giving a messed up reading to the O2 sensor. The sound didn't change too much, maybe a little deeper than before. The only drawback is only clamps for the front came with the kit. I had to use an adapter for the rear portion and it had to be welded. Still a great product though.

    Nice Pypes

They look nice under the car, and seat-of-the-pants feel is, very good, added allot more kick then I expected. One of two things either the old one's were really plugged up or I'm full of crap don't have any real numbers for comparison. Only down side I see is they seem to stick down a little further than the old ones, I'll have to watch for bottoming-out and scraping them. They look great under the car though, I did end up welding them in, I didn't use the clamps.

    High Flowing Cats

07 GT/CS, SLP Long Tubes, SLP X-Pipe, SLP Loud Mouths. Old cats went bad swapped them out with the Pypes cats, fit was great, they might have quieted the exhaust down while driving the DB sounded lower, but when you hit the go fast pedal the roar and snap was there!!

    Too quiet

My BBK high flow cats went bad after a year. I decided to give these a try and I was disappointed. My car went from a roar of a lion to a purr of a cat. I miss that sound. Going to buy a different brand.

    Way better than stock

They went in really easy and fit great. I added them to an off-road H-pipe with a Borla Cat back system. Sounds awesome now. I don't believe anything can be to loud myself. They help it get a deeper tone when accelerating.

Great Compromise Between O/R and Stock Cats

Bought these about two years ago for my 06 GT. I was tired of loud droning exhausts that gave me splitting headaches but still wanted more volume. I had these welded in place of the stock cats on the stock H pipe and everything has worked great. They sound amazing, plenty more volume when you get on it, and mellow at idle and cruising. Don't get me wrong, when you floor it, it still screams. I ended up putting the stock mufflers back on with these, and it sounds amazing. It isn't tinny or weak sounding, it is deep and throaty and doesn't drone in the cabin at all. Surprisingly these high-flow ceramic cats and the stock mufflers may be y favorite exhaust setup for the 05-10 3v GTs. Totally worth it, and they last a long time!

    Set your Pony free!

A check engine light…yes, that is what got me onto AmericanMuscle.com searching for new cats. That and an impending visit to our Vehicle Emissions Inspection station that I was deemed to fail. I plugged in our OBD-II scanner to find the code was for the catalytic converter on the passenger side. After I did a visual inspection, my S197 had no more left in those OEM converters. Hilariously, I demand more and more performance out of this daily driver as if it is a GT, not the V6 my money could only afford 7 years ago. This need for more prompted me to do some research already on the Pypes Mid-Muffler True Duals because I wanted the sound and power increase. As I looked at reviews trying to decide on cats,,mostly the reviews had recommended the Pypes High Flow Ceramic Catalytic Converter Kit along with the True Duals. With a one click to purchase, I had no idea I was in for the ride of my life. I had these installed along with the pipes at a local shop and it took about four hours for the entire job for $300. In addition to the pipes sounding like archangels singing in heaven upon startup, when I left the shop and onto the main road, I felt like a 105mph pitch being caught by a baseball player – cupped into my leather seat tightly! The power was amazing as I throttled upwards in acceleration, causing me to forget the posted speed limit momentarily. I’ve also noticed my CAI whistles a lot more upon acceleration and the RWHP has definitely increased. When I can get onto a Dyno I can call numbers, but knowing my old 'Stang and this new monster I’m creating…INCREASE! As I mentioned on my AmericanMuscle.com review of the duals, I run my car at our local track and my best run on the last Test & Tune with my last set of upgrades (Screaming Demon Coils, Street Thunder sparkplug wires and NGX Iridium sparkplugs and a BBK CAI) was 15.519 secs/ Reaction Time 0.346 sec/ 1/4 mi @ 91.28mph. I'll post everything on my youtube site when I do go with the Pypes Cats and Duals. As a thumbnail, with all stock I ran a 15.759 sec/ Reaction Time 0.453 sec/ 1/4 mi @ 91.24mph. It has been about a month now and I will say my gas mileage has improved, as well. I was doing about 15.89 mpg of mixed city and highway driving and now I’m at 19.24 mpg with the same type of driving. Buy? YES! Bang for buck? MMMHMM! So what are you waiting for? Stop reading this and scroll up to add to cart and purchase!

    High flow cats FTW!!

I have installed these because my car was way to raspy and loud as i had installed the catless Pypes off road x pipe and the Pypes Bomb Cat Back. I did not expect any performence gain as i was looking into a better exhaust note but it did. I noticed the power gain as the throttle was more responsive, the engine flows better!! It also made the sound clear and less raspy, i get looks everywere i go as it is still just loud enough >:)

These were the pain for my installer we had to fab some new pipe when added to my shorty headers and pypes true dual system, Over all they completed the exhaust from front to back great product.
