Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey, guys, Adam here with americanmuscle.com. Today, I'm bringing you a detailed overview of the Exedy Mach 400 Stage 2 Clutch with a Hydraulic Throwout Bearing, fitting all 2005 to 2010 Mustang GTs. In this video, I'll be going over the benefits and performance of the Exedy Stage 2 Clutch, as well as the Hydraulic Throwout Bearing. I'll even touch on the materials and construction, and I'll top the video off with the installation, which I'll let you know upfront, gets a full three out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter and will definitely test the toolbox at home. So let's hop right into it. The Exedy Mach 400 Stage 2 Clutch and the Hydraulic Throwout Bearing will be for any '05 to '10 GT owner who's experiencing issues with their factory clutch and looking for an upgrade, or for those of you looking to upgrade, to really handle your mildly modded Mustang. So like I just said, there's definitely more than one reason you'd be looking at the Exedy Stage 2 Clutch I have with me today. There's a couple of reasons you'd pick up a new one, and the biggest one by far is obviously gonna be because you're having issues with your factory clutch or your current clutch in your Mustang. Now with that said, I'm gonna detail a few symptoms that'll definitely stand out to let you know if it's time to pick up an upgraded clutch. One of the biggest and most dreadful signs of a bad clutch is no doubt going to be the burning smell of a slipping clutch. A slipping clutch offers an unmistakable scent and offers your clutch pedal to grip your gears really high up off the floor, whereas a good clutch should grip 'em a lot down low. Now with that said, you also have the acceleration problems of your car not accelerating properly, maybe a little bit slower than normal, and it's all gonna be thanks to your pressure plate and clutch disc not having enough friction with the gripping all around here, as you can see. Now, of course, there are several other symptoms of a bad clutch, some of which would include a sticking clutch, basically when your clutch isn't disengaging properly, or when your pressure plate is worn down to the point of replacement. Now with that said, any of these symptoms will signify a bad clutch, as well as many others you can find online, but it would definitely be a good time to pick up the Exedy Stage 2 Clutch here, the Mach 400 option, which is going to be a direct fit replacement. So as I said in the beginning, there's more than one reason somebody would swap out your factory clutch or your current clutch for a new aftermarket upgrade, one of which is if your clutch is going bad, the other is if it's more convenient when you're dropping the transmission anyway. Now that's something I'm personally going through at this point. I've got a leaky rear main seal in my own Mustang, so when I drop the transmission to fix that issue, I'll be swapping out the clutch just to make my life a little bit easier. With that said, it'll save you money in the long run from having to drop the trans a second time when your clutch goes bad anyway. Now that way, you save yourself some money and you pick up an upgrade in the meantime. Now that same theory is gonna apply directly to your hydraulic throwout bearing. Now, a lot of you guys might not understand exactly what the hydraulic throwout bearing does and what its function is, so let me explain that to you quickly in a nutshell. So the hydraulic throwout bearing is honestly what makes clutch engagement happen and it's kind of the whole heart of the operation. Now, in a nutshell, when you press down your clutch pedal, the hydraulic throwout bearing will press in the pressure plate's release fingers, disengaging the clutch, allowing you to change gears. Since I've given you some symptoms of a bad clutch, I'm gonna give you some symptoms of a bad hydraulic throwout bearing, one of which is gonna be having trouble disengaging and engaging your gears, as well as hearing a loud obnoxious squealing noise coming from your transmission area. If you hear any of these symptoms, it's always a good idea to swap out your hydraulic throwout bearing. And like I said, since the trans is coming out to do so, you might as well switch out your clutch, which makes this kit a perfect upgrade. So one of the many good things about this particular kit from Exedy is going to be that it offers almost everything you need to get the job done. Included in the kit is your pressure plate and clutch disc, your alignment tool and pilot bearing, and of course, your hydraulic throwout bearing you see here. Now, the clutch itself combines all-natural organic compounds, as well as a high clamp pressure plate, all made of high quality and offers a stock-like drivability, great for daily drivers. All of the Exedy discs include spring-loaded dampers as well to reduce drivetrain shock in the meantime. Now speaking of daily drivers, this one is going to be perfect for any stock or mildly modded Mustangs out there as a direct fit replacement. Now, what I mean by "mildly modded Mustang," of course, is just the basic bolt-ons, the cold air, throttle body, full exhaust, maybe a manifold. Of course, you wanna keep in mind this is rated for up to 510 foot-pounds of torque at the flywheel, so you wanna keep in mind what exactly your setup is pushing at the crank. Now, if your setup's featuring a little bit more done to it than the average Joe's, then you might wanna think about other options on the market. Any forced induction setups, you can check out some of the Stage 3 and 4 Exedy kits. As well as some of the guys out there pushing crazy numbers in the 600, 700s, and even more, you might wanna check out some of the twin disc setups as well. Now, if this is something that you are interested in and you think it fits your issues, or if you're just looking to get the replacement to do while you're dropping your transmission, you could pick this particular kit up with the clutch as well as the hydraulic throwout bearing as the kit for about 400 bucks. Now, that's definitely a very common price tag for these clutch kits just like this, and Exedy offers some of the top-of-the-line stuff, so there is definitely a bang for your buck here. So there's one more thing I wanna point out before moving forward to the installation, which gonna relate to your price tag. Now, it's highly, highly, highly recommended to pick up an aftermarket flywheel to match up to the same brand of aftermarket clutch you're getting as an upgrade. What this basically means is, when you're getting the Exedy Mach 400 Stage 2, it's highly recommended to get the Exedy Lightweight Racing Flywheel with the six-bolt pattern for the TR 3650 10-spline manual transmission you have in our '05 to '10 GT. Now this isn't me trying to make an extra sale here, guys. What I'm trying to tell you is that it makes a difference for your ride quality and your long-lasting support of your brand new clutch. Matching up an aftermarket clutch with a different brand or a stock flywheel really does not mesh the greatest and it will definitely wear down faster than it should. Matching up the brands here will give you the best ride quality and the most maximum performance, which, of course, means the flywheel is sold separately. It's definitely a good idea to factor that into your price tag when you're shopping around. So now we can shift gears over to the install portion of the video, thanks to the good clutch we have on the table - pun intended. Now with that said, there's a full three out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter here, guys, simply because we have to drop the entire transmission. There's a lot of mechanical know-how required, so it's definitely a good idea to seek out professional help if you don't feel comfortable taking care of it yourself. Now if you're tackling this job yourself, it'll test the entire toolbox and will take about four hours worth of time in your driveway at home, if you know what you're doing. And just to wrap things up here. If you're the owner of a 2005 to 2010 Mustang GT and you're looking for an upgraded clutch here to handle your mildly modded Mustang if you're having issues with your current one or if you wanna knock it out while you got your transmission out, you might wanna check out your Exedy Mach 400 Stage 2 Clutch with a Hydraulic Throwout Bearing, all of which can be found as a kit, right here at americanmuscle.com.

I tinted my headlights and at night i can see some watwr behind the tint....will that all go away over time or do i need to redo them?

EricC

  • Hey Eric, You will most likely have to redo them because that would occur when there are air pockets in the tint. You may be able to use a straight edge and push it out but most likely will have to be redone

i`m just about to install mine and i`m wondering how long does the curing time take , i just dont want to wash my car too early and have it get screwed up. I`m not sure if these are same as window tint and i definitely dont want to install this twice as it`s tedious enough the first time lol

Brent

  • The American Muscle Graphics Smoked Tint Kit will cure fairly quickly, however, it can vary based on outside ambient temperatures and humidity. We would recommend waiting 1-2 weeks before washing the car with anything beyond a hand wash to ensure everything has had time to set up.

How can you say fits all but then exclude 50th anniversary models? To me that's not "fits all"!

KCstang

  • Thank you for your question about the American Muscle Graphics Smoked Tint Kit (15-17 All). The kit is meant to be compatible with the GT, V6, and Ecoboost models. The only issue with fitment is on vehicles equipped with the 50th anniversary appearance package that includes chrome tail light trim. That appearance package is an option, otherwise the tint kit will work.

I haven't put on my kit yet because I'm usually always going somewhere. Do I need to wait for my tint to set before I drive or can I get on the road as soon as it's been applied? If so how long should I wait?

JustinB

  • The American Muscle Graphics Smoked Tint Kit should be allowed to sit for an hour or so before driving to allow the water to dry and the graphics to set. You would also wait 1-2 weeks before using any type of car wash other than hand wash.

Looks awesome but also illegal in some states

This was an easy install and looked awesome on my oxford white mustang....however I found out today that in the state of Texas it's illegal to have this tint on your lens. Doesn't matter how bright the light still is if anything is on the lens it's not going to pass inspection. Please check your state laws prior to buying to save the money and the time.

    Great sinister look!

The AM smoked tint kit definitely does its job by adding that desired aggressive sinister look to the car. Installation was super easy to say the least, had fun doing it. However, like a lot of reviewers stated, the fitment isn't that great, especially at the break lights, I kept heating and stretching to get everything to line up. Otherwise, it's sick!

    Looks great!

Just finished the install, not as easy/quick as I originally thought it might. And in my opinion the tiny was cut just a hair short in some cases but if you take your time you will be able to stretch and manipulate the tint enough to cover every light entirely. The material Is very forgiving. Very happy with the results. And the tint hinders the headlights just a little bit.

Looks great for the price, fitment could be better

This was my first time working with tilt or graphics so I had some help from my father who has more patience than me. Basically he did the install while I watched and handed him parts. Overall its worth the money and time. Was quoted 240$ from a shop to install it for me so we went for it on our own. finished product is pretty good and really makes the car look amazing. Installation was much easier than I had expected and really wasn't bad. Just take your time and get the placement right. That being said, we really had to pick the middle ground between covering the entire lens, and covering the parts you see most. Every piece seemed to be about 1/8" to short on each end. For example, the tail lights have about 1/8" showing both top and bottom. The quarter panel lights have about 1/8" showing front and back. Found this to be true with all parts. So we made installed based on what you see while standing there looking at the car, and based on how they looked with the lights on compared to off and picked the middle ground. With better shaped/sized pieces, I would give 5 stars. My kit also missing third brake tint for convertible so we will see what customer service does for that in the AM.

    Smoked Tint Kit

Happy with the purchase. The precut film was not a 100 perfect fit on some lenses but better than I could have cut it. Maybe off by a 16th here or there so you have to be extremely close to see any part of uncovered lens. The cuts weren't labeled but easy enough to figure out. The headlights are dimmer at night but not too dim to see. To me its worth it for the look.

    Looks good!!

Definitely a nice addition to the GT, would've gave it 5 stars but the tint is a little smaller than the actual lights leaving a small area around the light un-tinted. Take your time on the tail lights probably one of the hardest areas to lay down smooth!!

The product arrived at my house in 5 days. There are a lot of pieces. It took me a little under an hour to install using a spray bottle, hair dryer, and the material the kit came with. It was pretty easy, and the fit is right on. There is a youtube video that you can watch, I watched three minutes of it. All and all, my car looks amazing, I would like them a little bit darker, they still look great.

I watched several videos on americanmuscle.com on how to install product , it becomes easy as you get the hang of it and it gives every S550 a stealth look while still emitting enough light to not look like a cheap product like I've seen on other vehicles who blackout their headlights tail lights etc

Good Product but not the best fit

I just installed this product today and first off I have to say how easy it was for me to install this kit with no experience what so ever. I was estimated that it would cost me around 300 for Tint World to tint my head and tail lights so i installed these myself in under 3 hours. However, I believe the two rear side light tint strips are not a proper fit. After I installed them i realized that they both could have been about an 1/8th of an inch longer or even more. I believe it is the strips because the others fit just fine. The Pages are also not labeled like they show in the videos however by comparing the strips next to the light you can easily guess what goes where. I would also like to add that contrary to popular belief, the head lights were the easiest to put on compared to the taillights. Overall great product and great service from American Muscle. Save the money and DIY!!!

Looks awesome, just buy it already!

Bought the tint kit and took a "sick day" off of work when I saw the UPS truck coming. Total install time took about 4-5 hours of me taking my time. I washed my car first, and made sure all of the lights/reflectors were squeaky clean. I've never installed anything vinyl before, and this kit gave me no significant trouble. Install came out good, I have some slight cloudiness, but nothing noticeable, and the instructions indicate it will go away. To install, I used some vinyl applicator I had from another unfinished project. Make sure to use something soft on your application squeegee, as you will scratch it if you apply alot of force. I used a felt squeegee and made sure to keep the face of the vinyl damp. Also, start it off right and get out your wife/girlfriends hair dryer, it makes everything about 10,000 times easier. Start with the fogs and end with the tail lights and front markers. I didn't put on the headlight film because I wasn't a fan of the color (not as dark, obviously you want to be able to see), but they aren't nearly as hard as the front markers. Keep in mind, hard is a relative term, this film is extremely forgiving, and hard to screw up. Only film I had issue with was the rear side reflectors, they were a little small, but I was able to stretch them to fit with the hair dryer. On a scale of 1 to 10, install is probably a 2. I highly recommend this product.
