    Review & Install Video

Hey, guys Stephanie with AmericanMuscle.com here with my review of the SR Performance Rear Shock Tower Brace in chrome for all 2005 to 2014 Mustangs. The SR Performance Rear Shock Tower Brace is a little piece of the suspension puzzle that can help to just tie everything together and take some flex out of the body and provide some good looks for the trunk. The shock tower brace is really just to reinforce the chassis. Taking any flex out of the body, even if it's only a little bit, can only be a good thing. Reducing some flex and giving some reinforcement here can help to improve traction, which means better and faster handling capabilities not just from a launch but also in the corners. Having crisp handling always makes for a more fun driving experience. Improved traction only means a quicker feeling car. You're definitely going to notice the shock tower brace any time you pop your trunk. The fact that this is a nice bright chrome brace is a nice feature. If you aren't really into the chrome look, SR Performance does offer the same brace in black as well. The black version's going to cost a little less, too. If you have a show car, the fact that these braces have a nice look in the trunk is just a plus. One thing to keep in mind here is that you won't notice a drastic change in handling from this brace alone. It does offer a little benefit, but it's not a night and day situation unless you do something like tie the brace into a cage. Then, you can expect a huge difference in rigidity. But like a lot of other suspension parts, a shock tower brace is only one component of the suspension. The improvements of the brace can be even more considerable when you start pairing it with other suspension mods. Once you start making other suspension upgrades, the shock tower brace will work to keep everything tied together and feeling tight and more stable. This means overall more consistent suspension no matter what you're doing with your car. As far as price, there's the difference between the chrome and black brace from SR Performance, but neither are going to break the bank. The chrome option costs just over $170 and the black version is about $25 less, so $150. If we move on to the install, this is an easy install that anyone is able to tackle by themselves in the driveway or the garage and should take less than an hour to complete. I'm going to call it a one out of three wrenches on the scale, but I will say that I've heard of some fitment issues with this brace. It will not fit the Stangs with the Shaker sound systems and there may be some modifications to make in order for the install to be completed. This is on top of the trunk liner that will need to be trimmed if you follow the instructions. As far as tools, you won't need anything crazy here, just a few wrenches and a blade for the cutting. The spare tire cover will need to be removed. Move the fabric covers out of the way so the nut and stud are showing on each side. Just loosen these on both sides and replace the spare tire cover and install the brace. It simply just slides over the studs. The flange nuts with rubber grommets go back onto the studs. This is where you might need to do some modification to get the brace to sit properly. You may need to bend some of the fingers on the brace to get it to fit right, but that's about it. The fabric covers can go back into place and you can cut some of the fabric away to allow for a better fit. It's really up to you. That's all it's going to take to get this installed. Wrapping things up here, the SR Performance Rear Shock Tower Brace works to take a little bit of the flexibility out of the body of the car and reinforce the chassis, which makes for better traction and improved handling. It works really well when tied into other suspension supports and it's very easy to install. You have a choice of chrome or black and you can check it out more online right here at americanmuscle.com.

Improves Handling Performance. Improve your S197 Mustang's handling performance by reinforcing your rear shock towers with a SR Performance rear shock tower brace. A SR rear shock tower brace will stiffen your Mustang's chassis to reduce suspension flex and improve traction for impressive corner carving handling.

Superior Construction. The SR Performance Mustang Rear Shock Tower Brace is made from heavy duty tubular steel to keep your rear end from flexing under g-load and is completed in a durable triple plated chrome finish for classic good looks and long lasting corrosion resistance.

Application. The SR Performance Rear Shock Tower Brace is designed to fit all 2005 to 2014 Mustangs, including the V6, GT, Bullitt, BOSS, and Shelby GT500 models. Does not fit Mustangs with the Shaker 1000 sound system. Technical Notes. Some modifications and welding may be required for installation. All models will require trimming of factory inner trunk liner.

I have a 2006 Mustang GT with the factory shaker 500 sound system. Is it true that this bar will not work in my trunk?

    AaronS

    • The SR Performance Rear Shock Tower Brace will not work with the Factory Shaker 1000 Sound system. The Shaker 500 should work with this brace. I would double check fitment in your trunk to make sure your shaker system isn't on top of where the strut brace would be installed.

Review from SR Performance Rear Shock Tower Brace - Black (05-14 All)

      Great product BUT:

This thing works great in conjunction with the SR front shock tower brace. I had done the front a few weeks ago, did not notice much difference in handling and tightness. Now installed this in the rear, and wow. Car is flat through corners, less body roll, and feels more composed. THAT BEING SAID, the nut remove this thing is 17mm, the top of the shock tower must be secured with another device. The posted user install guide suggests a 6mm, as opposed to the 8mm the manufacturer online guide suggests... neither worked for me. I had to lock this with a vise, pipe wrench, needle nose, it was absurd. Driver side was not a major issue, but for passenger side, the 17mm nut turned fine, but the top of the shock tower kept turning when there was like half a millimeter of shaft to grasp, making this nearly impossible to remove. Worse, I couldn't tighten the nut to get the thing back to stock, and go to shop to get help lol. Woulda had to tow it. I powered through, notched the top of the shock tower lightly and jammed something in there, but, Christ that was effort. Took me 2 hours to remove two bolts lol. The package from AM had no instructions, also, however this should have been an easy install anyways. That being said, having a little slip of paper is idk, reassuring. AM should include that, no excuses guys. I realize that the issue on my right shock tower could be more Ford issue, than SR issue, but they could include a little chunk of wrench that fits the odd square shape of that brace, charge an extra $10, who cares, that would have made life a lot easier. All's well that ends well though, the product itself made a good difference once I managed to get it on there.

      What a difference

I have a convertible and the car has felt loose since I got it. The car cornered like a whale when I autocrosses it. I installed this shock tower brace along with the SR strut tower brace, and a JandM adjustable pan hard bar. What a difference they made together. The car feels tighter, more solid and stable on the road. The car'seat body roll is much reduced and handling is 100 improved. I don't know what Ford doesn't install this from the factory.

      Easy quick install

This was one of the quickest and easiest mods I have done. My left arm is in a sling and I was able to do this job one handed. Fit and looks are really good. On a test drive I cut some S's and the car feels a little different. Taking flex out of the uni-body can only be good.

Instalation was a bit difficult considering I had to have two tools just to get a nut off. After that it was no problem installing it. Since it being in the back you don't notice much change in stability.

      solid

i can feel a little difference in stiffness but not as much as i thought i would... but i think its honestly due to design. it only mounts under the rear shock bushings. and i figured maybe it kinda pressed against the shock towers it sits on but it does not. so i think it could be alot better if it actually pressed down or bolted to the body itself.. you can still like push on it and it will flex in the trunk. so if your expecting a HUGE improvement you are in the wrong place. its very subtle. but its there. plus it looks cool

      It works

Honesty after reading everyone posts, i just had to try it. I had less body roll, body flex, and noise in the cabin. This was my first upgrade to my 2011 gt. I figured i will work on the chassis and suspension before i put any additional power to it. I feel more comfortable after installing the part.

      Rear Shock Brace

Brace went in easy and fits almost flat in the Trunk. It does NOT take up too much trunk space, so your trunk remains functional. Haven't driven the car much since I put the brace in, so I don't have an opinion on how much of a difference there is on handling with versus with out....

The bar was pretty easy to install. Fit and Finish was good. How much it helps is hard to say. It seems like starts to help and then its just not enough. On sale it was worth the money but if I had paid normal price I would have been grumbling.

      Looks nice, holes wrong location

The brace has a nice finish and looks strong. The holes were too close together and I had to elongate them to get it to fit. Used metal epoxy to ensure strong connection that did not rely on just the shocks (and yes that means sanding off your paint). Main improvement I noticed was less creaks from the back end, since I already have the factory performance package.

      Great product! Impact Wrench Recommended

I bought this after buying and installing SR's front strut tower brace. Unlike that kit, the rear brace came fully assembled, which was a relief because I didn't have to put in each tiny bolt and nut for the chrome centerpiece. As with the front one, this rear shock tower brace also comes with complete instructions with color photos--an impressive feature. However, they recommend you use a 17mm socket wrench on the nut and an 8mm on the shaft of the shock. Not having either of those in my box wrenches, I spent roughly another $100 in ratchet kits because none of them had the complete range at Sears. When I go to use the 17 and 8mm, I find what is actually needed is a 15mm and a 7mm. Mildly frustrating, but at least I had bought the kit instead of the single wrenches. Unfortunately, the shaft above the shock threads was round, and even after hammering the ratchet onto it, the post would just spin after turning the nut. It was obvious more torque than what hand movements can provide would loosen it and my air compressor was broken. I sent it to the shop and they had it on in an hour. $30 with delivery. It pays to have a friend who owns a garage, or a working impact wrench. All said and done, the product looks great in the trunk and stiffens the rear of the chassis to where I'm far more comfortable passing Chevys in the twisties.
