    Review & Installation Video

    Review & Install Video

Hey, everybody, I'm Justin with americanmuscle.com, and this is my detailed review and install of AWE's touring cat-back exhaust system featuring their chrome tips, available for your 2015 and newer Mustang GT. Now this system will get a one out of three wrenches on the difficulty from me for the installation, but we will have more detail on that later on. The touring system from AWE should appeal to the S550 GT owners out there looking to grab one of the only cat-backs in the premium category that will deliver that H pipe configuration, making it a great choice for owners who prefer that deeper tone overall compared to the higher pitched tone or raspiness of an X pipe that tends to dominate the category. Now, in addition to that, prospective buyers can look forward to an absolutely top notch quality build, materials, and fitment here, in addition to AWE's patented technology, their 180 tech, illuminating any in-car drone. But most importantly, the AWE touring I think will be for the owners out there who want a system out there that will deliver plenty of bark despite this thing being AWE's milder of the two options, their other system being the track edition cat-back, which obviously will be a little bit more aggressive. But let's not waste anymore time. Let's get right into my tried and true wake the neighbor scale, where I have the touring system coming in at a robust three out of five on my one to five, or one to wake-the-neighbor scale. Now honestly, I went back and forth between a three and a four, and I think both would have applied perfectly for this system. Ultimately, I did land on that three, though. Again, a strong three at that. Now, guys, don't be fooled by that touring name, because this system will be delivering plenty of volume. And on top of this thing being pretty aggressive overall, I personally really dig the tone of the AWE touring. It's a deep tone, nice and smooth, and maybe I'm a little biased because I do have an H pipe on my personal Coyote. But personally, I just prefer that deep thumping tone of the H pipe, as opposed to that high pitched, almost exotic tone of an X pipe. Maybe you guys don't agree with me. Maybe I'm just getting a little old, but ultimately, it doesn't really matter. It's entirely up to you, guys, as it is your car and your money. I do want to say, though, that if you do prefer those higher pitched tones, there will be other systems on the site that do incorporate some kind of X pipe. We'll deliver a little bit more of that exotic tone. Corsa is a great option, for instance, and, of course, you can check those out here on the site. Inside the car, however, things are a completely different story. Things largely impart to that 180 technology that we told you, guys, about a little bit earlier, AWE's way of kind of cancelling out this drone. How do they do this? Well, if you were to open up this AWE touring resonator, you'd find a bunch of ports. And using this method, they're able to locate and kind of cancel out these unwanted frequencies, better known to you, guys, as drone. And I'm happy to report, when cruising around with the touring system, things are very quiet inside the car. But let's touch on the construction a little bit more here with the AWE system, because personally, I feel like it is one of the strong suits when talking about the brand. And listen, guys, I know a lot of Mustang owners probably aren't terribly familiar with AWE as a brand, but what I can tell you is they've been making some high-end systems for high-end cars for quite awhile now. Yes, this might be their first rodeo in the domestic or Mustang market, but it certainly isn't their first time making exhaust systems. In fact, they've been making some stuff for German cars for nearly 30 years now, all of it very baller and all made right here in the U.S.A. But let's break this thing down a little bit further, shall we? Stating with this H pipe, we already talked about it a little bit, but it does feature the factory style, neck down that work with your factory manifold pipes, or a cat pipes, I should say, in addition to an aftermarket set of long tube headers that do work with the factory style connection. Moving downstream, three-inch mandrel-bent tubing throughout here. By the way, guys, everything on the table, premium grade 304 stainless steel. They do incorporate a couple bullet style resonators here before everything exits or enters the AWE touring resonators. No, I didn't mess up. That's what they call these things. They don't refer to them as mufflers. So they move through the AWE touring series mufflers, load it with that 180 tech that we already talked about, before finally making their exit out of the four-inch, double wall chrome tips. By the way, you can grab these things in black for an extra 50 bucks if you'd like. But let's break down the price point here a little bit more at the AWE system because this is uncharted territory, I'm sure, for a lot of you guys watching, but here's what I can tell you. Touring cat-back with the chrome tips, you're looking at just north of 1300 bucks, putting it right in line with some of the Cooks stuff and also the boiler systems as well, just south of the Corsa territory in regards to overall price point. And, again, what I can tell you, that price is certainly worth the cost of emission, guys. You're getting a premium build quality here, premium materials and a great fitment, along with a blow pop with every kit. No, I'm not kidding. They actually throw one in, and it is kind of funny to point out. Switching gears, let's talk about the install a little bit more here with the AWE touring system. And, again, like I mentioned earlier, guys, one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter. Maybe an hour or two from start to finish to get your factory system removed and to get the new touring system in place. Your first step is obviously you're moving that factory exhaust system. To do so, you can just basically grab a socket set again, and remove those forward most clamps here, sliding them back, and then remove the two bolts, securing the exhaust hangers to the rear subframe area. This is going to allow the entire system to drop. Just be careful, though, it is all one piece. It is a little heavy. So if you have a buddy around the shop or garage, now would be a great time to grab him. Now once that factory system is out of the way, you can get to work installing the new AWE touring system in reverse order. Personally, I always like working from front to back. That means hanging your H pipe first and securing it with those two clamps that you removed in the very first step. Once that is in place, you can get to work installing each side here of the tailpipe section. Save your final tighten up to the very end, because this way you can position those tips exactly where you want them in their respective openings. Once everything is in place, simply tighten everything down, and your installation is complete. Well, the possible list of cat-backs that I would install on my S550, if I own one, just got a little bit longer, as I personally love everything about the touring system here from AWE. Loud enough to give the car some serious bark, but not loud enough to be heard three miles over. Factor in some quality materials and no drone, and you got a great combination. So, guys, that is my review of the AWE touring cat-back, which you can grab right here at americanmuscle.com.

Smooth Muscle Car Tone. Give your 2015-2017 GT Mustang a smooth muscle car tone without any of the annoying drone commonly associated with performance exhaust systems by upgrading to an AWE Touring Edition Cat-Back. This Cat-Back employees an H-pipe with bullet style resonators that replace the bulky factory resonator and a pair of straight-through Touring resonators that feature 180 Technology®. Together these components will give your Coyote powered Mustang a more pronounced sound that is louder than stock without any irritating drone.

Performance and Power. Featuring a clean, non-baffled, straight-through design the AWE Touring Cat-Back not only improves the sound of your GT Mustang, but it will also improve its performance. By reducing back pressure and giving your GT a free-flowing exhaust, you will see increases in both horsepower and torque. AWE has seen gains of 8 hp and 18 ft-lbs of torque to the crank.

180 Technology®. AWE designed their Touring resonators using their own proprietary 180 Technology® to give your Mustang a smooth muscle car tone without annoying interior cabin drone. As exhaust gases flow through a AWE 180 Technology® equipped Touring resonator, they pass through strategically located ports, and into reflection chambers. Sound waves, carried by these exhaust gasses, bounce off the walls of the reflection chambers. Restricting the size and location of these ports and chambers, will control when the sound waves exit the chambers. The specific timing of when the reflected sound waves rejoin the main exhaust flow creates a 180 degree out-of-phase sound wave that cancels out problematic frequencies.

T304 Stainless Steel Construction. AWE proudly engineers, designs, and manufactures their Cat-Backs in-house, in the good old USA. This exhaust system is handcrafted from U.S.-sourced CNC mandrel-bent 0.65” wall T304 stainless steel tubing for superior strength and corrosion resistance. The system includes an H-pipe with two bullet style resonators and features two straight-through resonators that end with diamond black 4" double walled, slash cut exhaust tips.

Direct Bolt-On Installation. Engineered to be a direct bolt-on replacement upgrade, this AWE Touring Cat-Back replaces everything from the mid-pipe resonator to the exhaust tips. This exhaust system with H-Pipe includes all necessary clamps and hangers to ensure a simple, straight forward installation with no modifications required.

Application. This AWE Stainless Steel Touring Edition Cat-Back Exhaust is designed to fit 2015-2017 Fastback GT Mustangs equipped with the 5.0L 4V coyote engine. This 3" Cat-Back steps up from 2.5", so that it can be installed with the factory 2.5" exhaust system. Does not fit convertible models.

Are the AWE Touring Corsa Sport 50 state legal like the FRPP by Borla touring cat back? Does AWE, Corsa and Borla guarantee no drone at any rpm in any gear and if it drones what recourse is available to the customer? I have a 2016 GT auto (recent cancer robbed me of right arm function to shift anymore) that shifts into 6th at low speeds and my current magnaflow Street system has to much drone for my taste in this situation, its certainly not bad, just to much for me. Its a shame to because most of the time its awesome...great volume and great sound. Its between the AWE touring, Corsa sport and FRPP by Borla Touring (maybe Borla Touring).....if i'm shelling out over a grand...again...I'd like to get it right this time. I want something that makes a good noise when I get on it and is quiet when i'm just crusing around. Thoughts??

    • Hello! Unfortunately the AWE Touring catback exhaust does not guarantee that it is 50 state legal like the FRPP by Borla does. Also none of these companies have a physical guarantee that there will be no drone. However, from personal experience I can tell you that there are no exhaust systems I have ever been around that produce less droning. This was the purpose behind building these exhaust systems, and they succeeded.

Exactly What I Was Looking for

It took me a year before I finally settled on the AWE Touring edition cat back system. I just wasn't a fan of all the systems with X-pipes, just to raspy for me. I like a deep muscle car tone and AWE nailed it with this system. The fit and fishing was top notch and installation was a breeze (I put an afternoon down for the install but it was really like 3 hrs with all the interruptions I kept getting bothered with) . Double bang for the buck as I purchased it during the Black Friday Sale. The sound is incredible. Put your foot in it and this system roars, deep and mean. Once you get up to crusin speed, 0, and I mean 0 drone, through the typical RPM range (1500-3500) you can barely here the thing. This is exactly what I was looking for. Loud when I want it to be and mild mannered when it needs to be.

      This system is ridiculous!

HOLY COW!! Super quite in the car at speed. Yet when you punch the gas everybody around will cover there ears! Stock Gt 401a package car with stock 20s. Car cruises at 1500rpm@60mph and ZERO drone. Even at 80mph-2000rpm ZERO drone. Couldnt be more impressed!

      Get what you pay for!

I know it's expensive, but you get what you pay for. That is certainly true here. The 180 tech works as advertised. It's loud around town. I actually experienced a side benefit as I drive more conservative now than I did with my factory exhaust. I used to rev higher between shifts to hear the engine. That's unnecessary now. It takes a little getting used to because it's about 10 times louder than the factory exhaust, but the sound is pure classic muscle car. It pops and burbles a little, but I love it! On the highway it's low rumble. I hear the tires more than the exhaust. No drone!

      Nice and Deep

I'm the second owner of my 17 Performance Pack GT. The previous owner had installed a 2.5in Borla ATAK catback on the car, and boy did that thing scream. After living with that system for two weeks, I decided it needed to go. I didn't like how raspy the Borla got with the X-Pipe. The second the revs cracked 2K the volume increased exponentially. When shopping for a new system, the two contenders were the Corsa Sport and the AWE Touring. I opted for the AWE because of the H-pipe design and the addition of bottle resonators to smooth out the tone. AWE ,as mentioned in the product videos, make exhaust for really high end euro stuff (Porsche, McLaren, Audi, BMW, etc.) so I wasn't worried about quality. As for the exhaust itself, build quality is top notch. All the welds are solid, and you can tell the systems are well constructed. In terms of volume, I can't compare to the factory unit, but it is a much deeper and smoother tone compared to the Borla ATAK. I find it much more pleasant if I'm just in a cruising around kind of mood. This thing is still very loud when you get on it though, it sounds like a straight piped exhaust when under full throttle, and that H-pipe does a good job of keeping the rasp in check under such conditions. Overall, this is exactly what I wanted in an exhaust, deep muscle car tone while cruising, but still has a wild side when you open her up. My only negative is that when on the interstate cruising at 75-80mph, despite the AWE's anti-drone "180 technology," a small amount of drone develops, but its nothing a little music can't drown out. Honestly though, from an acoustics stand point, those low and deep frequencies are very hard to cancel out, so the fact that AWE were able to diminish it as much as they did is impressive. Definitely, a satisfied customer!

      Not exactly what I wanted

Lets start with install, very simple. Took a little over an hour. Fit and finish is fantastic. Now, onto sound. It is louder than stock, but not ridiculous. Low RPM it sounds great. (If you want it quiet just clutch in) At high RPM's sound becomes mildly distorted and doesn't really sound all that great. My biggest issue is drone, I got this exhaust over the track because I didn't want it droning. At 70 (373s) it is obscene, I find myself downshifting to 5th just to change up the noise. It wasn't nearly as loud as I wanted it to be, it didn't sound nearly as good as I wanted it too, and it droned a lot more than I wanted it too. If you want a deep tone and don't mind drone get the track, if you are looking at this exhaust because you don't want drone, stop. This exhaust drones.

      cat-back with long tube headers

install on the a.w.e. system took the shop 20 minutes to install and align every thing up. Dan put car on dyno. at Pro Dyno in South Carolina. outside of car exhaust has a low sounding growl like an old american muscle car, inside of car the sound is noticeable but you can still have a conversation. and when you accelerate or put your foot in it it sounds awesome, but absolutely no drone at any speed or r.p.m. every one in shop were impressed and said it definitely had a much lower tone than other exhaust. Best Cat-back on the market

This exhaust system is exactly what you are looking for if you want that classic muscle sound. It is not too loud but it definitely has some bark. I love the pops and crackles it produces when you let of the gas. This exhaust produces a low frequency rumble.

AWE set the bar with this exhaust, quality is an understatement. Perfect amount of volume and the exhaust note is unreal. Absolutely zero drone! The H pipe tones down the rasp nicely. Still nothing sounds better than the old pushrod 5.0L v8...but remember they only made 225hp!

      Excellent in every way

Like others mention, this exhaust is a bit louder than one would expect on the inside. But to me, it's perfect in most ways. Only slight gripe is that it does start to get a little noisy, but not drone, at 80 mph... This can become a problem in Texas where we've got an 85mph speed limit! Even then, it's not "loud." It's just that I can notice it in the background with my music on. But cruising at any speed below 77ish, it is as quiet as stock on the highway.

      Awesome Product

The video does not give this system any justice. Super easy to install, less than 45 minutes with a four post lift. The materials are top notch and the black diamond tips match well with the rest of the black on the car. The note is perfect, like an old muscle car thump. Unless you get into the go pedal, it is quiet enough to cruise down a residential street without waking the neighbors. No drone whatsoever.
