Review & Install Video

Hey everyone I’m Justin with and are you giving your engine the props it deserves, not that kind of props, I mean are you still using that dated hood prop to show off the engine bay in your ride? If so you will definitely want to check out this MMD bolt on hood strut kit fitting all 2005 to 2014 Mustangs. MMD has quickly become the industry leader in unique aftermarket parts that help make your Mustang look a lot cooler, this kit is one of those items. This 100% bolt on kit requires no drilling or modification like some other kits and is available in your choice of either show stopping chrome finish or a factory black finish. Now besides dramatically cleaning up your engine bay, it also makes raising the hood a lot easier as well. The kit includes 2 gas powered struts, both upper and lower mounting brackets, and all the required hardware. Getting the kit installed should only take you about an hour thanks to the fact that both brackets utilize your factory bolt locations. It is worth mentioning that this kit will also work with aftermarket fiberglass cal induction hoods or even carbon fiber hoods as long as both of those options utilize the factory bolt locations. Chances are when you pop the hood of your ride it’s either to show off what you’ve done or to turn a wrench or two, you don’t want that hood prop in the way when you’re working on your motor and you don’t want some ugly piece of metal front and center when you are showing off that new blower. Do yourself and your engine bay a favor and check out this bolt on hood strut kit by MMD.

Prop Rod? Are you still using that old style factory prop rod that Ford installed in your S197 Mustang? Well then join the new millennium with a set of Modern Muscle Design Hood Struts from AmericanMuscle for clean modern looks and convenience.

Style And Strength. Designed to get rid of that old ugly prop rod, this set of two powerful yet sleek MMD gas struts not only makes opening your Pony's hood much easier, but also holds it securely in place. Made from lightweight steel and aluminum, they have a chrome and nickel plated finish to give your engine bay a much cleaner appearance.

No Drilling Required. The stamped steel brackets included in this MMD kit are designed to bolt into the existing mounting holes in the hood so there is no drilling required for installation. Struts can be installed on factory hoods as well as aftermarket hoods that use the factory bolt location. If your aftermarket hood is lighter than the factory hood, use caution when opening the hood due to the power of the strut.

Application. This Modern Muscle Design Hood Strut Kit is specifically designed for use on the 2005 to 2014 Ford Mustangs, including the V6, GT, Bullitt, BOSS, and Shelby GT500 models. The Kit includes two chrome gas powered struts, mounting brackets, and all the required mounting hardware.

    Should be a factory item!

Installation took about 45 minutes due to extra time protecting the hood from possibly sliding onto the cowl. I stuffed a large towel under the corners to ensure no paint damage in case the hood slipped. Everything went on smoothly as per the instructions and the chrome version looks fantastic on my silver 5.0. The pivot balls go on extremely easy if you remove the tiny C-spring first then install it afterwards. Be sure to apply a dab of grease inside the balls for lubrication as they are dry from the factory. This is a "Must Have" item for any Mustang.

It is nice getting that hood prop out of the way. Plus, these allow the hood to open even higher, which is nice as I am 6'3". When installng on the 2013 GT, just pay attention to the instructions for the sound tube detour, and also use a bit of comon sense for the windshiled washer tubes. I am a Neanderthal, so if I can figure it out, so can you!!! After I installed I tested the windshield washers, and they both worked beautifully...

    Title is ok

The install was pretty straight forward but they forgot to tell you to take out the little clips on each of the ball connectors of the shock absorbers! Once you do that it its easy. Works great, Don't have any idea Why Ford doesn't put them on at the factory and if they had to charge another 100.00 bucks the Eye appeal alone would would be worth that It gets you away from the model A look to the 21ST century!!

Terrible product. After about 1.5 years they started rusting and I live in NC where there are no salted roads. After 2 years they no longer support the hood.

MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit - Chrome (05-14 All)

Fit perfect and looks great, was missing one of the retainer clips and I was told that I should get a replacement. Clips are on the struts when you get them, so check that they are attached when you open the box.

MMD install on 2013 MCA Mustang

This hood strut kit really cleans up the overall look to your engine compartment and does away with the factory prop rod. I reversed the lower brackets from the way they were marked and found that they remained in place better. One of my struts had a bad thread size and would not hold. AM replaced this and all is well. Improvements could be made in the hood brackets by having holes for the fasteners to plug into for the windshild washer hose and the sensor wire for the hood position.

The Hood Struts are a great upgrade over the prop rod

Installation is relatively simple, but you need to remove the catch pins on the struts, they slide down, in order to "pop" the strut onto the brackets. This info should be included in the installation instructions. Once done you will be quite pleased with the results, looks, and the ease in opening the hood.

MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit - Chrome

Upon receiving my Hood Strut Kit .. for my 2012 Mustang GT...It took just under 30 Minutes to install. The simplicity of installation provided, takes BARNEY Style installation to a whole new level. So very easy! The great thing is it work better than the old spring loaded type from earlier models in the 60's etc. And best of all it looks just like it came from the factory installed. What a great way to display the engine without the OEM factory Prop-Rod!!! Now my wife can open the hood with ease, and no more excuses for not checking the oil! Great Product!!!

Love them, super easy to install

I'm not a very mechanical guy but I found the Hood Strut's very easy to install. They work great and look great with some of my other chrome mod's. I find everything I have ordered and installed by American Muscle to perform very well, plus looks great on my 08' GT. Mike Ryan, Ont, Canada

    Nice but NOT easy

These looked great online and I was desperate to rid myself of that horrible hood brace from the factory. Glad to spend 100 bucks to clean up the engine compartment, especially for a direct bolt on that I could install in 30 min. However 30 min in to the installation I was ready to throw the in the garbage and put the old brace back on. Let me be fair, maybe I got a difficult or defective set, not sure but mine did not go on like the instructions would have me believe. The brackets go on easy enough but I would highly recommend help when its time to loosen the hood bolts, however the struts DO NOT simply pop on the brackets. After several failed attempts, two bloody knuckles and almost decapitating myself once ( help would have prevented this) I finally got smart and decided to remove the wires from the struts and put them on after slipping them on the brackets, spoiler alert, you cant do that on the top portion unless you can thread a needle blind since the hole faces away from you and goes up to a hole you cannot see. Took the upper bracket back off, put strut on, ran wire through holes and carefully installed upper bracket with the strut already on so as not to chip any paint. then slipped lower portion on and ran wire through the holes since I could actually see them on the bottom( they face you). 1 1/2 hours later I had them on ( that included 30 min of carefully bending the wires back into shape since I bent them terribly trying to install them the way the instructions said to). Now that they are on, the look good and seem to function fine, its MUCH better than stock, Could have used better instructions and the bottom brackets do not sit straight, not sure if that's intended or not.

Look great, but they don't stay up for long

I bought these to go with a new fiberglass hood since my old Redline struts wouldn't work with the new hood. These struts look fantastic for sure, but I'm disappointed in MMD in that they aren't at all effective for holding the hood up for more than a couple minutes at a time, even when there's no wind. After maybe 10 minutes, CRASH goes the hood...less time if there's any wind. This is really going to be a problem when I enter the car in shows since a huge part of the display is showing off the engine. Looks like I'm going to have to get creative and find some sort of decorative something to put in there to prevent damage to the hood when it comes down all by itself if I'm not around to catch it. Even though this is a disappointing product, I still plan to be an AM customer since past experience has been amazing...I'll just think twice about ordering anything with the MMD name.

    Looks great

The chrome hood struts arrived quickly (as always) and looked great in the box, but even better on my car! I thought that they were a little pricy but they really are worth the money now that they are installed. Getting rid of the stock hood prop didn't seem like a big deal until I saw how much better it looked without that stick in the way, it makes working under the hood easier and it adds a little custom touch that I really like. The only negative is that the brace that bolts to the hood (on the passenger side) covers the windshield washer line mounting holes so you have to remove the clips and reroute this. not a big deal but a little annoying.

    Hood Up Hood Down!

This is one of the best add-ons for any Mustang, and it makes opening the hood easy. The chrome was just OK not the best but over all looks OK. Had to put rubber spacers at the back (side) of the bottom brackets so they would not turn from the pressure this worked out good. Over all an easy install.

Overall a nice touch to dress up the engine bay

An overall nice product. Fits on the hood well, but the bracket that fits the fender slid a little after installation. The fender bracket should probably have two bolts instead of one.
