    Review & Install Video

Hey, Stephanie with, and this is my review of Exedy's grooved Mach 500 stage 3 clutch with a hydraulic throwout bearing for 2005 to 2016 GT Mustangs. This particular stage 3 clutch is a good option for anyone looking to replace or upgrade their current clutch. This is a good option for stock to moderately modified Mustangs that see some hard driving or track time. This is pretty much the same Mach 500 stage 3 clutch that you guys already know with the sprung hub design. What Exedy did here was used an organic compound disc to keep the drivability nearly the same as the stock clutch, and keep a smooth engagement with what I call a firm pedal feel. Then they paired that with an upgraded pressure plate, so the clutch can handle more abuse. The difference with these clutches lies in the pressure plate. Exedy has used a grooved pressure plate, which should offer more holding power than the standard smooth pressure plate would. This means that the clutch will be able to hold more torque than the traditional stage 3 clutch can, about 30 foot-pounds more to put a round number on it, and all without what I classify as a huge jump in price over the standard stage 3 clutch, which is nice. The S197 version is rated at 522 foot-pounds of torque, and the S550 clutch is rated at 616 foot-pounds of torque, and that's at the rear wheels, just to clarify. And if that's not enough for you, then Exedy does have a stage 4 option on the site. Keep in mind that if you're looking at a new clutch, you should have something in mind for your flywheel, as well, and I'd recommend just picking a new one up. When it comes to the install, I will say that I'll recommend taking this to a shop unless you have prior experience in this area. This is going to be a three out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter, and you're probably looking at about four hours' time if you do decide to tackle this yourself. If you choose to go that route, I'd also recommend trying to gain access to a lift. You're obviously going to be dropping your trans, drive shaft and exhaust, so performing this on jack stands could be a little difficult. And make sure you have a torque wrench. Lastly, don't forget about that clutch break-in period no matter who's installing the clutch. You're looking at about a 750-mile break-in period under normal driving conditions and before you start driving hard. Again, the Exedy stage 3 clutch has a grooved pressure plate that allows for the clutch to handle more load, and still has an organic compound disc, so you don't have to worry about heavy pedal feel. This clutch has a higher torque rating than the standard stage 3 clutch does, and isn't that much more expensive. As always, check this thing out online and see what you think for yourself. I'm Stephanie, and for all things Mustang, keep it right here at

Ideal Performance Replacement. If you drive your S197 Mustang GT like it's meant to be driven, it's easy to burn out your weak stock clutch. If you're starting to feel your Mustang's clutch slipping or are getting that unmistakable burning clutch smell, an Exedy Grooved Mach 500 Stage 3 clutch with Hydraulic Throwout Bearing is an affordable, upgraded performance replacement that will fit your budget and demanding driving style.

Grooved Pressure Plate. Featuring a unique grooved pressure plate, this Exedy Clutch offers more holding power than their standard smooth pressure plate equipped clutch kits. Exedy has machined grooves directly onto the face of their Pressure Plates which is designed to increase the "mean effective radius", which in turn increases the torque holding capacity of the clutch - perfect for high torque Mustangs.

Street or Strip. The Exedy Grooved Mach 500 Stage 3 clutch is a performance oriented clutch upgrade, offering higher clamp loads without sacrificing driveability. It's perfect for the Mustang that stretches its legs on the street, strip, and track, since it offers smooth engagement with a firm, not rigid, pedal feel.

Premium Quality. The Exedy Grooved Mach 500 Stage 3 clutch is designed to offer the durability and performance of a racing clutch with the driveability of a stock piece. To make the Mach 500 kit, Exedy combines an organic compound disc and a powerful, high clamp load grooved pressure plate for crisp yet smooth engagement and great wear. All of Exedy's discs feature spring center dampers to reduce drivetrain shock.

Application. This Exedy Grooved Mach 500 Clutch with Hydraulic Throwout Bearing is designed for 2005 to 2010 4.6L V8 Mustangs with a TR3650 manual 10-spline transmission, including the GT and Bullitt models.

    • 10 Spline
    • Torque Rating @ Rear Wheels: 498 ft-lbs

It's recommended that you add an SR Performance Braided Stainless Steel Hydraulic Clutch Line during your new clutch install. Stock plastic clutch lines can fail during aggressive driving. Stainless steel clutch lines help prevent gear lockout and provide superior clutch pedal feel, even under the toughest conditions.

      Excellent Product

Bought this back in Feburary '18 ahead of time to install in my '09 GT when the OEM clutch started showing signs of wear (also planning to install a Paxton 2200SL HO SC w\ air to air intercooler in near future). Picked up an Exedy LRF to go w\ it in June '18 (full Exedy upgrade package) along w\ Ford Performance flywheel and PP bolt kits. Finally took my car in Monday to get all this installed....also found clutch master cylinder had started leaking so had this replaced w\ an upgraded HP aftermarket aluminum part instead of the OEM plastic unit while getting clutch\flywheel kit installed (already had a Ford Performance SS clutch line installed earlier this year). Picked her up today from the shop and all is good! Clutch engagement is very smooth but does grab very quick due to the grooves in this PP along w\ it's increased clamping load but does it w\o any chattering! This should smooth out some once she's fully broken in but I do like how this clutch bites! This is the best Exedy clutch kit to get IMHO if high performance along w\ near OEM drivability is desired. Would recommend it highly.

      Great product

Exedy racing flywheel Installed in combination with the Mach 500 clutch and exedy clutch slave cylinder/stainless line. Clutch pedal feel is very easy; grandma could drive it. Grip is great, no slippage ever with 450whp. Revs much quicker than before; almost as much improvement as upgrading the driveshaft, but not quite. If I gave the driveshaft a 10 for making it accelerate quicker; this clutch/flywheel combo would get a 6. Where it really shines is driveability. Great product.

      wow! Love the change.

Love the reaction of the clutch. Just to long on the break in. Ugh! But, love it.

      Nice clutch

Have had this on for a little while now. Took forever to break in though. Hopefully it lasts a long time. So far it grabs really well. I also installed the lightweight racing flywheel when I changed the clutch. For the money this is a good clutch, plus it comes with the slave cylinder and pilot bearing. I would buy from them again. Also wasn't hard to install either. I did however use my buddies lift.

      Great upgrade!

I paired this with a new exedy flywheel and a McLeod clutch line(was the cheapest). Total world of difference from my stock clutch with 130000km on it. Bled the clutch properly (jack the driver side up and keep pumping!) and bled the brake system with all new fluid, mainly because line lock installed too. No more half pedal till engagement. Less than an inch of pedal movement and the clutch just GRABS! Really smooth engagement. Didn't notice a whole lot more stiffer pedal. It's really a night and day difference. Just ran it around the block for now. The longevity and performance is something left to be explored. I'll be doing the 500mile "break in" period. Really happy with this product and like always, really happy with American muscle.

Great quality. Amazing bite, awesome product.

Installed this clutch and the difference is unbelievable! After the standard 500-750 mile break in the bite is amazing, even pushing 550whp there's been no slippage thus far. Pairing it with the Exedy flywheel is the perfect combo. The only noise noticed is from driving the car immediately after a cold start where there's just slight chatter until the engine is warm; completely normal. Shifts smooth as the factory clutch and the engagement is crisp. Outstanding product!
