Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey guys. Justin with AmericanMuscle.com here with a brief look into the Ford Racing by Borla Catback Exhaust system, available for your 2015 Mustang GT Fastback in your choice of either a chrome or black tip. The collaboration of Ford Racing and Borla has resulted in some great-sounding, high-quality systems for the last few years. And they continue to be a very popular choice with the S550 crowd. Now the sport system I have with me in this video here today is going to be the more aggressive of the two offerings from Ford Racing by Borla, the other being the Touring series. So let's talk about how this system gets its bark. Well, starting with the 2.5 inch mandrel bent tubing, all of it's stainless steel here in the incorporated x-pipe. Well, you're going to be picking up more of that raspy growl as opposed to that low, thumping grunt of an h-pipe as you guys all just heard with the sound clips. Now because you are replacing the factory suitcase resonator with this x-pipe, and because we are working with a full stainless build here, you can expect to ditch roughly 30 pounds off of your S550 when making the switch to the Ford Racing by Borla Catback. In addition to that x-pipe, a main contributor of the sound here is going to be from these Ford Racing by Borla sports series mufflers, which are a straight through muffler by design. I know it doesn't look that way. These things do look chambered and therefore they look like they might be a little quiet, but that couldn't be further from the truth. The goal with this system here was to provide a nice aggressive tone but with plenty of street manners, something that will turn heads when you're on it but be whisper quite in the cabin while cruising, and they certainly nailed it. Rounding out these sports series mufflers here, we have the 4 inch slash cut tips, again available in your choice of either black or polished, embossed with that Ford Racing logo. Getting this Catback bolted up to your new GT will definitely be an easier task compared to older generations, thanks largely in part to that new independent rear suspension. Now because of this, dropping the factory system and getting this new thing bolted up should only take you a couple of hours from start to finish using basic hand tools and maybe an extra set of hands just to make life a little easier on yourself. As always, if you have any questions, guys, reach out to a Mustang expert here at AM anytime. They're always standing by ready to give you a hand. So if you guys are in the market for one of the premium exhaust selections available for your S550 GT, be sure to check out the collaboration between Ford Racing and Borla with their Sport Catback available at AmericanMuscle.com.

Aggressive Throaty Sound. Add an aggressive throaty exhaust note to your coyote powered 2015-2017 GT Fastback Mustang with a Sport Cat-Back exhaust system that features a pair of Ford Racing straight-through sport mufflers and 4" embossed black exhaust tips. This catback not only sounds great, but also improves exhaust flow with the included X-Pipe for an increase in horsepower and torque.

Race Car Growl. The included X-Pipe not only helps increase power, but it also adds a loud raspy, race car growl to the sound of your exhaust with its modern "X" crossover pipe design.

Borla Stainless Steel Construction. This Sport Cat-Back exhaust system is manufactured especially for Ford Racing by Borla from high quality mandrel bent 2.5" stainless steel tubing and features straight-through sport mufflers with 4.0" black painted stainless tips embossed with the Ford Racing logo. The tips exit in the stock locations so no modifications are required to the rear bumper cover.

Lightweight. This Ford Racing Sport Cat-Back exhaust system is 30 lbs. lighter than the factory Ford catback system, making it perfect for track and drag racers looking to shed unwanted weight in the pursuit of quicker times.

Legendary Ford Racing Quality. When you're adding new parts to your Pony, you can't go wrong by installing parts from the folks that know it best. Ford Racing's legendary quality ensures a perfect fit and years of hassle-free use.

Application. This Ford Racing by Borla Sport Cat-Back Exhaust System is designed as a direct bolt on replacement for the coyote 5.0L powered 2015-2017 GT Fastback and Convertible Mustang for both great looks and great sound.

Technical Note. The included mufflers are 49 state drive-by noise legal, not intended for use in the state of California.

What muffler did Borla use in this exhaust specifically? Is it the same on their S-type system?

BrendonS

  • The axle-back exhaust used in this Cat-back system was specifically made by Borla for Ford. The item # 384398 (http://www.americanmuscle.com/frpp-sport-axleback-chrome-2015gt.html), which is not exactly the same as the S-type system.

Which headers work best with this exhaust system?

JustinW

  • It would be difficult to pair the Ford Performance by Borla Sport Cat-Back Exhaust without having other information regarding your application, however, for general applications we would recommend using headers that taper down for a 2.5" tubing for the best fitment. For more vehicle/application specific information, we please ask that you contact us so we may recommend a set that best fit your application.

Why is this exhaust "not intended for use in California"? Do catback exhausts fail California SMOG testing?

Oaklandish

  • Yes they do, most exhaust based modifications will not pass California SMOG tests. You are limited to few choices of shorty headers and some axle back exhausts. Each item will have a CARB EO # that you will need to show at the time of emissions checks.

I watched all the videos and read all the reviews. At first I didn't want anything that was going to be too loud. Then I decided if I was going to spend all this money I mine as well do it right. Boy does this sound awesome!! I love the way it sounds and has Zero drone. It can be quiet when just cruising and turn heads when you accelerate. Installed in under an hour in my shop by two of the guys. I absolutely love driving my 2016 GT even more now!!

    Perfect for daily driving

If you are looking for a loud exhaust that is still quiet when you want it to be (for ex. when driving or neighborhood or passing johnny law) look no further. When shifting under 4000 rpm's, it has a really deep and extremely throaty tone, above that it gets pretty loud and raspy all the way to red line. No drone AT ALL. When cruising in 6th gear it is completely quiet. Performance gain is definitely there since i now spin my tires in 1st and 2nd gear all the way. The ford racing engineers did an amazing job on this product. Fit and finish is outstanding, you'll be amazed at how light this exhaust is when comparing to the heavy and restrictive stock unit. Did the install on jack stands in my home garage in about two hours, the majority of that time was spent taking the stock exhaust off and putting the car on jack stands. I've had this exhaust now for about a week and it still puts a smile on my face every time i put the pedal to the metal.

2016 Mustang GT - Ford Racing Exhaust

I have a 2016 Mustang GT with performance package. The car had 200 miles on it when I placed the order for the Ford Racing sport cat-back exhaust system with black tips. The exhaust was shipped immediately and arrived within a week in perfect condition. The system was much lighter than stock and was very high quality. I was even more impressed after it was installed. Sounds and looks great

    Great sound, great fit

Wasn't terribly impressed with the stock exhaust system on my 2016 GT. This catback system was the one that sounded the best to me, and is warranty friendly. The fit and finish is outstanding, and the install is very straightforward. The only criticism I have is that it's one of the pricier catback systems available and for some reason the version with the black tips commands about a $50 price premium over the one with the chrome tips.

    Ford cat back

Sounds great and the black tips look awesome. If you are doing this by your self, put a floor jack under resonator to hold it up after removing clamps. Then from the back pull on the mufflers to separate exhaust.

    Great exhaust system

Fits well, easy to install with someone else to help hold it in place. Did it in my driveway with the car up on jack stands.... Sounds great! I would recommend this exhaust system to anyone who wants the exhaust to sound like a Mustang should. System quiets down after driving for a few days but when you get on it still sounds great!

A must have for any 2015 GT

Any one that has a 2015 GT knows that the stock exhaust is really really quite so this is a must have for your first modification...If you have a V8 then it should sound like a V8...This exhaust is a little more expensive then the others on the market but you can't go wrong with Ford Racing products....I first called Ford to see how much they would charge for installation and they quoted me $275 which was rediculous considering this is a complete bolt on system....Any one can do this install but its just so much easier if you have a lift....I took it to a local Pep Boys and they did it for $100...The fitment is perfect, just make sure that they line up the tips correctly...The old exhaust is massive and is all one piece so don't expect it to fit in your car if you want to keep it....I installed the Sport exhaust so i was expecting it to be louder but i was basing this off of youtube videos so maybe it just seemed louder on the video clips....I would imagine that the Touring exhaust is really quite so I'm glad i didn't go with that one....My GT is Magnetic Gray so the black tips look amazing...I couldn't be happier with this purchase!! Haven't noticed much performance gains but dynos state that it'll improve it by about +15 HP...If anything the reduction in weight is a plus considering the massive size of the old resonator and the new exhaust note now makes it sound like a true sports car...Overall I highly recommend this exhaust system...Might be a little pricey but if your gonna do it then you might as well do it right and go with the best!! Thanks AM for once again providing an awesome product and super fast shipping!!

    Sounds great

Read all the reviews before purchasing, it went just like everyone said. I paid midas $150 to install although that was pretty steep considering how easy it was to do. We had bad weather that day and I was too anxious to get it on so I paid to have it done. I've wasted a lot of gas mashing the pedal just to hear exhaust. Wish it was a little cheaper but I'm happy with how it turned out. Its only loud when I get on it which is great so I don't upset the neighbors. It sounds like a mustang now and I keep my warranty!

    Perfection

First off let me start this with I had a 2011 GT500, so I know what drone is and I don't want it again. This has zero drone, it is insanely quiet, till you get on it, then it is loud and proud. I am so impressed, best thing I have done to a vehicle in ages. The car has more low end pull, spots where I could just mindlessly get on it, now she gets a little sideways. I wasn't sure if it was true what people were saying about it being quiet at cruise, it is, 75/65/55/45 just perfect.

    Great Sound!!

This exhaust is exactly what I wanted. It has a great sound, nice tone at idle and really roars when I get on it. I have a black out edition GT so I painted the muffler's with high heat black paint and it looks perfect on the car. The black tips add a nice look too. I couldn't be happier with it. Very Satisfied!

    Can't get enough...

I went with the Sport exhaust because I didnt want the sound to be too obnoxious. I was a little worried it wouldn't be much louder than stock... but I was wrong. It's loud when we step on it and no drone during idle speeds. The sound is incredible, makes driving the GT that much better.

    Amazing Sound!

When I bought my mustang I have watched and saved as many reviews and youtube videos of the after market exhausts out there. When I finally came to a decision, the Ford Performance Sport catback was the best of both worlds. The sound is amazing and way meaner than factory and is completely tame while cruising around. American Muscle's side by side videos are perfect for hearing thee difference. I can't imagine wanting a louder exhaust as this one fit so well with what I wanted

    A must have!

After a bunch of research and reading all the reviews, I took the leap with this exhaust system. After just one day post-install, I have to say, I couldn't have asked for a more perfect upgrade! From a sound perspective, there is a fine line between incredible and obnoxious - this is on the incredible side. At idle and "normal" acceleration, it sounds mint. And if you want to get on it, you can hop the side of the line towards obnoxious but it's at your discretion. I had my dealer install (along w/ a Steeda no-tune CAI) and I could feel the gains as soon as I drove off the lot. My only advice would be that if you want to keep the blacked-out theme of the car (as I strive to - black on black on black) then a quick coat of high-temp black on the mufflers is a must. Don't hem and haw any longer...just do it! You need this!

    Very Nicely Enginered Kit

My go-to shop, getting too old to crawl around underneath cars, did the install in 1 hour. Said it was the best cat back kit they ever installed. Love the black tips. That said it is significantly louder than videos indicate. You'll be short shifting to cut down on noise.

Great exhaust note with just the right amount of volume

I was on the fence about the Ford Racing catback for quite some time. After talking with other S550 owners and listening to as many YouTube videos as I could find, I decided to pull the trigger. I couldn't be happier! The exhaust note is fantastic--you'll be hard-pressed not to reduce your MPGs or rev going through tunnels with the windows down just to hear them. These should have come from the factory. Even with the Sport Catback, the volume is there when you want it. It's mild-mannered under light (note, very light) throttle for neighborhood cruising and will turn heads under WOT. The price is a little steep, but you can tell in the fit and finish. The install was painless and I took care of it on my own. Removing the stock exhaust was a bit of a pain, if only because of its one-piece nature. Even adjusting the tip location was pretty easy on your own. Just be sure to tighten the pipes enough to provide some tension to hold the exhaust tips where you want them. I installed the black tips on a black GT (with black emblems all around). Very sleek and stealth. Highly recommended!!!
