    Review & Install Video

Hey, guys, Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, here with my detailed review of the MBRP Race Catback Exhaust System with Y-Pipe, fitting your 2015 and up Fastback EcoBoost. Now, the Race Catback from MBRP is one of the most popular options for your EcoBoost here on the site and for a few different reasons. For starters, it's currently one of the most affordable options for your ride; it's going to offer full three-inch diameter piping from tip to tip; and finally it sounds really good despite not costing you an arm and a leg. Now, one thing I personally really enjoy about MBRP is the amount of options they give you in choosing the right system for your ride. For instance, we're looking at the full stainless steel version of the Race Catback here. It's going to cost you a little bit more but not by much. It's going to offer a full lifetime warranty from MBRP, largely in part to the full 409 grade stainless steel construction throughout that's going to do a good job of reducing any surface corrosion. In addition to that, MBRP does throw two aluminized steel versions of this exhaust at you. One's going to come with black mufflers, black tips, and black piping, and the other's going to be left in that raw aluminized steel silver color. Now, both of those options only carry a three-year warranty, but they're going to be the most affordable. Now, I did want to spend a little bit of time on tone, because obviously, this is an exhaust after all, and that's a big deciding factor. But a big question I get a lot is: How do I make my four-cylinder EcoBoost Mustang sound good? And honestly, guys, a lot of that is going to depend on what your definition of good is, but what I can tell you is that the MBRP Race is going to deliver a very enjoyable tone, deep, low tone here with practically zero rasp, minimal drone on the highway, definitely not a deal breaker, but you can hear it slightly, and overall, a very, very solid three out of five on my one to five or one to wake the neighbors scale. Again, you can hear this thing, but it's not going to be totally crazy loud. However, add in your favorite off-road or catless downpipe, and that number would go up considerably. As for the construction, guys, well, again, I did touch on this earlier, but you do have the full stainless option available to your here. That's the one I have on the table with me, 409 grade stainless. It's going to offer a little better durability over time. It's going to cost you a little bit more, but you do get that full lifetime warranty with the system. Those two aluminized steel versions, again, great systems. They're going to be a little bit more affordable, but they're only going to carry that three-year warranty, maybe not be as durable when it comes to reducing surface corrosion, but overall, still a great system. You are getting three-inch mandrel-bent tubing from tip to tip with this system, solid welds despite the price, and you are getting the race mufflers, along with the very large four-and-a-half-inch slash-cut tips, etched with the MBRP logo. You are going to be looking at a simple one out of three wrench difficulty here, guys, when it comes to the install. No cutting or permanent modification needed whatsoever. This is a direct bolt-on part that should make the install a little bit more easy on you. Now, as for tools, well, simple socket set here. You're going to need a large Allen key to tighten up these tips here, but overall, figure about an hour or two in the garage or driveway before you're making some noise. All right, guys, to wrap up the MBRP Race Catback, I do really enjoy this system for the simple fact that it sounds good; you have some options when it comes to the materials; and it's not going to cost you and arm and a leg to put it on your car. So be sure to check out more from MBRP for your EcoBoost Mustang here at AmericanMuscle.com.

    Ask a Question

Is it 50 state legal and will I pass smog if I was to run turbo back mbrp with a catted down pipe in California?

    BradS

    • The Catback exhausts do not deal with emissions and smog, so it would be safe to say the MBRP Black Series Cat-Back Exhaust is indeed 50 state legal. Being from California, the only exhaust pieces you would need a CARB certification on the product for would be catalytic converters as well as a new down pipe.

Could you confirm this will fit the European 2017 ECO boost? Many thanks in advance

    • While we do not see any reason the MBRP Black Series Cat-Back Exhaust w/ Y-Pipe would not fit the EU models we would not have an EU mustang to do test fitting on and cannot confirm.

I've got a catted corsa downpipe for this vehicle Im currently installing at the same time as this exact cat back. the issue Im running into is that the taper on the mid pipe doesnt go in far enough to get a clamp on, is there a modification that needs to be done, ie weld, cut or etc?

    bmwb

    • We suggest taking the MBRP Black Series Cat-Back Exhaust w/ Y-Pipe to a shop to ensure a proper install with any other exhaust modifications you are making.

      Awesome

Easy install, super quick. Hardest part was disposing of the old exhaust and resonator. Quick Clean and a very noticeable change in feel of the car. And the sound,,, ohh the sound. Quiet when cruising, and the growl it makes when you open her up it startling. This is an amazing system

      Great improvement on Stock sound!

Product was well packaged and shipment arrived exactly as estimated. Box contained 5 pipe pieces and 2 exhaust tips, instructions and 4x clamps. AM show entire system comes in 3 main pieces but I assume the LH and RH pipes were cut to facilitate easier shipping (smaller packaging). To be fair the 5 piece install was still pretty straight forward but more adjustment required before final tightening of bolts. If you have watched the AM or cj ponyparts installation videos then you should have no problem with installation of new system. Sound: Wow, what a difference! Was pleasantly surprised by how much better the race system sounded over the stock. I love my music, and the mustang has a great Shaker audio system but for the first time ever since buying my mustang I left the radio off and haven’t switched it on since installing the MBRP system. That says a lot! The sound at startup is the best. Deep but does fade once warmed up. Sounds great at low revs. Very very deep and throaty! Brilliant! From mid to high end revs the higher pitched turbo sounds kick in and dare i say sounds very similar to the stock system. Turbo volume is definitely more evident than before. Inside you immediately notice the increased volume. Stopping at traffic lights and pulling away just got a lot more fun! There is a bit of drone at low revs in 6th gear (70-80 mph, 2000-3000 rpm). I am noticing a few vibrations inside the car that weren’t there before. Performance wise the car doesn’t seem to pull as hard as it did with stock exhaust especially from 5000 rpm. I recon a tune is definitely required to get max benefit out of the additional breathing or alternatively a performance downpipe? Overall I think this is a great value for money mod and will never go back to stock setup. The install was pleasantly easy and sound is great. Well worth it and if you are in doubt dont be! Get it!

      Back in Black

This exhaust system is very good and I have no complaints. Yes I agree there’s a a slight drown at 2-4000 RPM but for the price, sound, and look it’s not a problem for me. Overall this system is very good for the ecoboost. Highly recommend.

      Amazing Sound

At first I was sketch about how it was going to sound. The exhaust came to my house within 48 hours and it was free which is amazing! At first I wasn’t sure if I was going to regret it or not but let’s just say I love my Stang a lot more now. Went with my friends and worked on the install, it took about 2 hours from start to finish.

      mbrp is a cr*p period

The exhaust came in five pieces where the description, photos, and the video shows that it only comes in three pieces. Also, the hangers have a different style which becomes shorter and the whole exhaust does not fit perfectly. the most important, the tips are touching the bumper, and AM guys gave me a silly solution which is bending the hangers. I tried to do that but the hangers are short, and I took my car to a muffler shop and they could not do anything because the hangers will not fit if they bend them more. I did not say that because I want to return the exhaust and get a refund. I really like the sound and enjoying it despite the fact it has some drone in the highway.

      GREAT SOUND!!!!

This exhaust was the easiest system to install that I have ever dealt with. All the pipes were bent perfect and all the hangers were in the right place and didn't need any tweaking to get them lined up. This system is surprisingly quiet at idle but when you put your foot to the ground, it wakes up to a nice and deep rumble for being a 4 cylinder engine. So far there is no complaints with this system and no exhaust drone at highway speeds. Overall this is a great system that adds some great power to this car with a tune. I highly recommend this system.

      Loud and Proud

Installation was super easy, took me two and a half hours by myself with car ramps. The hardest part, in my option, is getting the old exhaust off! Do not be fooled, unless you got some sort of magical exhaust set from the factory, you will need the also remove the rear hangers! The Mbrp exhaust is awesome, noticeable but not serious gains, and a much louder than any sound clip sound profile. I seriously contemplated going back to stock the first 100 miles, but I'm use to it now. It does drone.....alot. My kit didn't come with all the black tubing like advertised, somebody really messed up, and it was also opened, but had all the pieces. Still, i would whole heartily recommend. I turns heads and gets a lot of nods of other car guys.

      Best exhaust for an Ecoboost

I have heard a lot of Ecoboost exhaust and this is hands down my absolute favorite. Get this exhaust, it's loud but not too loud and is super quiet when it needs to be. I have yet to get it to drone on the highway or in the city.

I could not be more satisfied. It has a nice deep mellow tone. It keeps that deeper tone even under hard acceleration. We all know these ecoboost mustangs will never sound like a Gt. This exhaust is the only one to get for your ecoboost in my opinion.

      Two weeks in!

Installed this system on rhino lifts in my driveway, everything is pretty self explanatory as far as removing the stock and installing the BRMP, fit great! Sound: pretty huge difference, although I've only heard the exhaust from inside the car. Performance: probably absolutely nothing so far, but future plans of candl cold air intake and a tuner, plus having the racing exhaust I'm hoping to "FEEL" a difference, not just hear it! The black 4.5" tips look Awesome! If you have the few $$ to blow, definitely recommend.

      Almost Perfect

This wouldve been a 5 star problem if I wasn’t dealing with a unique situation. But the sound, performance, and quality is nothing short of being fantastic. Since I have an aftermarket downpipe, I wanted to get a full 3 in system, but this product naturally has it to fit the stock stuff, so if this had an option of a 3in entry for the dp, this would be my favorite upgrade. Rattles a little in the cockpit, and says quiet after a good warmup on idle, but it’s much louder than you expect. Definitely worth getting this if you like a deep tone
