Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey, guys, Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, here with my detailed review of the MBRP Race Catback Exhaust System with Y-Pipe, fitting your 2015 and up Fastback EcoBoost. Now, the Race Catback from MBRP is one of the most popular options for your EcoBoost here on the site and for a few different reasons. For starters, it's currently one of the most affordable options for your ride; it's going to offer full three-inch diameter piping from tip to tip; and finally it sounds really good despite not costing you an arm and a leg. Now, one thing I personally really enjoy about MBRP is the amount of options they give you in choosing the right system for your ride. For instance, we're looking at the full stainless steel version of the Race Catback here. It's going to cost you a little bit more but not by much. It's going to offer a full lifetime warranty from MBRP, largely in part to the full 409 grade stainless steel construction throughout that's going to do a good job of reducing any surface corrosion. In addition to that, MBRP does throw two aluminized steel versions of this exhaust at you. One's going to come with black mufflers, black tips, and black piping, and the other's going to be left in that raw aluminized steel silver color. Now, both of those options only carry a three-year warranty, but they're going to be the most affordable. Now, I did want to spend a little bit of time on tone, because obviously, this is an exhaust after all, and that's a big deciding factor. But a big question I get a lot is: How do I make my four-cylinder EcoBoost Mustang sound good? And honestly, guys, a lot of that is going to depend on what your definition of good is, but what I can tell you is that the MBRP Race is going to deliver a very enjoyable tone, deep, low tone here with practically zero rasp, minimal drone on the highway, definitely not a deal breaker, but you can hear it slightly, and overall, a very, very solid three out of five on my one to five or one to wake the neighbors scale. Again, you can hear this thing, but it's not going to be totally crazy loud. However, add in your favorite off-road or catless downpipe, and that number would go up considerably. As for the construction, guys, well, again, I did touch on this earlier, but you do have the full stainless option available to your here. That's the one I have on the table with me, 409 grade stainless. It's going to offer a little better durability over time. It's going to cost you a little bit more, but you do get that full lifetime warranty with the system. Those two aluminized steel versions, again, great systems. They're going to be a little bit more affordable, but they're only going to carry that three-year warranty, maybe not be as durable when it comes to reducing surface corrosion, but overall, still a great system. You are getting three-inch mandrel-bent tubing from tip to tip with this system, solid welds despite the price, and you are getting the race mufflers, along with the very large four-and-a-half-inch slash-cut tips, etched with the MBRP logo. You are going to be looking at a simple one out of three wrench difficulty here, guys, when it comes to the install. No cutting or permanent modification needed whatsoever. This is a direct bolt-on part that should make the install a little bit more easy on you. Now, as for tools, well, simple socket set here. You're going to need a large Allen key to tighten up these tips here, but overall, figure about an hour or two in the garage or driveway before you're making some noise. All right, guys, to wrap up the MBRP Race Catback, I do really enjoy this system for the simple fact that it sounds good; you have some options when it comes to the materials; and it's not going to cost you and arm and a leg to put it on your car. So be sure to check out more from MBRP for your EcoBoost Mustang here at AmericanMuscle.com.

I've got a catted corsa downpipe for this vehicle Im currently installing at the same time as this exact cat back. the issue Im running into is that the taper on the mid pipe doesnt go in far enough to get a clamp on, is there a modification that needs to be done, ie weld, cut or etc?

Will this void the factory warranty that i have?

Nick

  • While this MBRP Race Cat-Back Exhaust w/ Y-Pipe should not void warranty, as it does not change the catalytic converters, however, we are not able to make a guarantee. The warranty details are handled and decided by Ford exclusively, and since warranty exclusions change from time to time, we would not be able to provide accurate information. For warranty details, we would highly recommend speaking to the dealership which your Mustang was purchased through.

    Sounds amazing!

The MBRP race sounds great!!! Videos DO NOT do it justice! My only complaint is that the pipe openings were a bit bent and I had to use some pliers to bend them back in shape. Better packaging maybe? But overall it was an easy install (about 40 minutes) and it's definitely a head turner for the EB Mustang.

    Great Exhaust. Sounds great.

Will get loud(6.5 on 0-10) when you step on the gas and I still can cruise the neighborhood in "stealth" mode. Deep tone.

Ehhh to That's What I'm Talking About!

If you're thinking about buying this exhaust, do it! It's a great value overall! It puts such a deep, aggressive tone on your mustang! When you're cruising around the exhaust isn't obnoxiously loud until you really get on it. The turbo is amplified which to be honest, gets the heads turning. It'll rumble your seat giving you the feel that you should have in your Mustang! Freeway diving is extremely pleasant.

    Issues

MBRP needs to work on the packaging of their catback exhausts. Mine came with one muffler dented The piping curves was not a perfect fit and I can hear a pipe hitting against something underneath the car whenever I hit a slight bump/dip. Also, it took a lot of tinkering by the muffler shop to make the left side tip not to touch my bumper (so it does not melt it). On a positive note, it does sound good and I can feel a slight difference on the acceleration but I'm unsure if it is worth all the problems I came across.

    Love it!

I spent months online trying to find the perfect sound from videos. Let me tell you, I wasn't sure between this and a Street version, but boy am I glad I got the Race version. Great noise with rumbling, not too crazy, no headaches, just beautiful, full of bass noise that a video can't capture.

    My Ears!

I bought this exhaust based on videos provided and I honestly wasn't prepared for how loud it really was. The tone is deep for a four cylinder but sitting at idle next to my co-workers 2013 gt with Roush axle-back exhaust it was totally overwhelmed. Its livable and quiet enough at the lower rpms but once you try to pick up speed you can feel the vibration in the cabin. Its definitely has me more aware of law enforcement as it almost seems a crime to have this equipped to my vehicle. Despite this I love the sound and recommend this to anyone who can put up with vibrations, noise, and the occasional embarrassment of coming home late into the night and waking the neighbors. Oh yeah and going into sport mode with my automatic exhaust makes it sound more aggressive and louder! Oh boy, its a headache, but I love it.

    Gets you noticed

I knew going into it the ecoboost was never going to sound like a V8. Don't even know why people try. The MBPR cat back is great bang for the buck. I like loud exhaust. There is a little drone but whatever. It sounds great cruising and even better when you drop the hammer. I have a MMR CAI and Cobb AP3 and car is a beast. I am chirping it hitting it in third. Car had 1200 miles on it and now has 3000. I am de-tuneing it because I do drive from shore to NY everyday. Even with tune and couple mods still getting 27.5 mpg. Just waiting for down pipe to get here.

    Sharp looks, fantastic sound

To start, I just want to point out I'm completely satisfied overall with this. The black looks great on my white Eco with black wheels. Sound through the entire rpm range is nice and clean, and not annoyingly loud (video doesn't do it justice.) In my experience, this was not a driveway install. I took it to a shop and had it professionally done, and I'm glad I went that route. One of the pipes had to be torched and adjusted, because fitment was a bit off. All of the brackets were cut and new ones built at the shop. Once everything was finished, even the shop guys were impressed with the sound and appearance. I'm happy with how everything turned out, I just recommend letting a shop take care of the dirty work.

    Great Value for the money

I spent a long time researching which system to get - pretty sure I watched every clip of every Mustang Ecoboost Exhaust that is on YouTube - before settling on this. And I love it! From the moment you open the box and are greeted with that 3" Y Pipe to to the moment you take the tips out of their boxes it's just a nice piece of engineering. My son and I installed it in the garage on jack stands in about 2 1/2 hours - even with my ratchet breaking in the middle! The install instructions were very good. Make sure to watch a video or two before starting to really understand what to do. We had a couple issues...It would be nice if the mid-pipes and mufflers were stamped left/right... I also had to massage the inlets of the mufflers to get them to fit over the mid pipes. I think that is due to the coating on the mufflers. I also just noticed that my mid-pipes are not coated black as it shows in the pictures here. But, the system looks great. The 4' tips really add a lot to the look of the rear of the car. The sound. WOW. A deep rumble at start up, a nice burble at idle, and WOW, a roar under full throttle! It does take the car from refined, to having character. I drive with the windows down a lot now! At cruising speed, I can tell it's there, but my wife can't. Under load or WOT, it does get LOUD. It's a nice sound and let's you know it's a car. I think this is really the way this car should sound. For the price, especially compared to other systems, this is the best value out there.
